    Horner Confirmed
The detective of the week award goes to Glen from Las Cinco Muertes, who sent an email to Jack Horner (director of the Museum of the Rockies and dinosaur consultant on JP and TLW), who wrote back saying that, yes, he will serving as a "scientific advissor" for Johnston and the JP3 crew. He is under contract, however, and "is directed not to speak about any aspect of the movie." You'll remember that in a speech Horner gave at a University awhile back, he hinted that the T-Rex would not be the main antagonist in JP3.

    More DVD Menu Shots
DVDReview.com has posted several new shots of the upcoming JP and TLW DVD menus.. Two images show the differences between the special features on the DTS and normal versions of the JP DVD's (Unless you own a DTS sound-system, you'll want to buy the normal version, as it contains more special features). There's also a shot of page 1 of the "Bonus Materials" on the TLW DVD. (Saw this on the Spielberg/Dreamworks Fansite)

    JP/TLW Box Set Image
And while we're on the subject of the DVD's, I just noticed that Amazon.com has posted an image of the JP+TLW Limited Collectors Edition Box Set, the $83 ultimate edition, which contains the JP and TLW DVD's, the two soundtrack CD's, the collectable "senitypes" and a certificate of authenticity.

    Producers Scouting Utah Filming Locations?
Following up with the news that JP3 producers have contacted the Utah Highway Patrol to enquire about their uniforms (Story), Steve from IGN FilmForce has received word that JP3 producers are looking at "a national park located east of Vernal on the Utah/Colorado border: the Dinosaur National Monument". They may be considering this location for, not surprisingly, a paleontological dig scene in JP3. (Thanks Oviraptor).

    News from Inside Universal
Once again, our anonymous friend who works in the studio tour department at Universal Studios sent along some juicy information on the status of the JP3 production. He also takes the opportunty to clear up a few things, most notably regarding the infamous white wall. Here's his message:

I would like to confirm and clear up a few things that I saw on your site. JP3 is currently using a total of eight stages on the lot including Stages 12 and 28, as well as the 747 Stage (which, if you will recall, used to have A.I. filming in it). Also being used is the Lost World set on the backlot.

I saw a lot shooting log and it shows that JP3 has a 667 day shooting schedule and they are not even over 200 yet.

Now as for the infamous "white wall", I was on the tour last week and the wall was not there anymore. I ased a studio guide about it and they told me that it will not be returning and that was just leftover from Grinch and was never intended to be reused for JP3. I hope that this once and for all ends the "white wall" debate, but I doubt it.

That is all for now, but with actual filming scheduled to begin at the end of this month, I expect to have more info very soon.

Update: Note that the 667 number includes pre-production, production, and post-production, which would finish JP3 just before the July 2001 release date.

JP+TLW DVD Ad on Erin Brockovich DVD
Jon from JP3HQ sends word that the just-released Erin Brockovich DVD (and probably the VHS as well) contains a "1-minute promotional trailer for the JP and Lost World DVD". Jon has pictures over at his site, click here to see 'em. (Update: Chris reports that a preview copy of American Psycho -- to be released Sept. 5 -- has the promo trailer as well. Update2: Brian says that the trailer was before the un-necessary direct-to-video sequel, Dragonheart: A New Beginning as well. Update3: Chris says it's on "Beyond the Matt" too.)

    JP+TLW DVD Menu Shots!
Click for a big one Everyone's favorite DVD website, The Digital Bits posted two images of the JP and TLW DVD menu screens. And they look far cooler than the one that came out awhile back, which was obviously fake. Anyway, click the image for the one from JP, and here for the shot from TLW. (Thanks Oviraptor)

    Picture from the Set
Click for larger version 'SoupDaCoup' sent along a picture he took August 8th while visiting Universal Studios. Obviously, you can see Studio 28 in this picture, along with various trees and branches apparently being used for the "jungle set with tall vine-like trees" inside. 'Soup' also notes that a small sign on the door of the set "cautioned that no condors would be allowed in the studio." (Update: 'Scififann' wrote in kindly explaining what a "condor" is -- apparently its a term for a 4-wheeled lift, and not related to JP3. They're not allowed in some stages as their weight would crash through the pit in the center.)

    News from Universal
It's been a bit slow these days, but I did receive two reports of JP3 set spotting during visits to Universal Studios: Hollywood: First up, Andy says that while passing Stage 12, he looked in and "saw a tree and some other forest/jungle bushes and stuff. When you go by the TLW building [the visitor's center, presumably -Dan] in the backlot they had it all cleared out for the filming of 'Grinch' but they said they were going to use it for filming JP3 next month." Next, Philip's friend was also recently at the Studios, and was told by a tour guide that "baby plants" were being grown for the film. Phil speculates that these plants might be wrapped around the infamous "white wall" to make it look like a jungle cliff.

'Trespasser' Engine to be Used in JP3 Games?
Please, please, please don't let this be true: Jim S. sends word that it's possible that the less-than-stellar Trespasser game engine (used in the TLW PC game of the same name) may be re-tooled and used for Dreamworks Games' upcoming JP3 game(s)... According to Jim, a game developer, his request to license the engine awhile back was turned down since Dreamworks "saw possible future potential" for it.

Producers Like Utah Cops, JP3 a Prequel?
Shaun Kofford reports that his local TV news channel (KSL in Salt Lake City) had a short blurb on today's news, saying that apparently JP3 producers have contacted the Utah Highway Patrol asking for information on the uniforms they wear while on duty for use in the film. Apparently a Utah Patrolman will be "taking on a dinosaur in the film" during a chase. Besides the news about the uniforms, the report also calls JP3 a "prequel". I dunno, besides the characteristic bee-hive on the patrol cars, it looks like Utah cops wear pretty normal uniforms to me... (Update: Oviraptor found the report, it's here)

    Turner Confirmation?
Well, it's not from an official Universal source, but this bit of news from Tem seems to indicate that the rumor we've been hearing since April is true: Kathleen Turner (Romancing the Stone, Serial Mom, Peggy Sue Got Married) will be starring in JP3. Here's what Tem has to say:
I noticed in the news section that you had Kathleen Turner rumored to have been offred a part in Jurassic Park 3. This isn't a rumor. I recently worked with Kathleen in London, where she played Mrs. Robinson in 'The Graduate' stage play, to which i was the directors assistant. She was very nice but a few weeks ago she abruptly left the show with little notification -- as the assistant, the director asked me to call her agent for a reason, thinking that Ms. Turner was unhappy. Upon calling the agent i was told that Ms. Turner was happy but she was offred a major role within a universal blockbuster movie.. Anyway a week later news broke that Kathleen Turner was rumored to be in Jurassic Park 3.
I'm not sure what other films Universal has in production, but I'd certainly classify JP3 as a "blockbuster".

    Trevor Morgan Interview, Plot Details
In an audio interview (RealAudio required) with Trevor Morgan (recently signed to play the role of "Miles" in JP3) on the UK film site Popcorn, the 14-year-old actor spills the beans on some JP3 plot details: His character will be "trapped on an island with all the dinosaurs" in the film. His relationship with his father (played by William H. Macy) is rocky at first, but "he comes to try and ... save me in the jungle so it sorta makes our relationship grow a whole lot more." Adding some additional info about his character, Morgan says that "The kid is very smart -- He knows a lot about dinosuars and all about these fossles and finds these bones and everything and is very facinated [with them]". Filming will begin August 28, with 4 weeks in Hawaii before returning to LA for green screen work. (Thanks Mario of MovieFans.de)

Téa Leoni to Join JP3 Cast, Morgan Confirmed
Hot chick Téa Leoni, (A League of Their Own, Wyatt Earp, Deep Impact) is apparently in "final negotiations" to star in JP3, according to this morning's Hollywood Reporter. "Details of the third installment in the hugely successful 'Jurassic' series are being kept under tight wraps, but it is known that Leoni will play a romantic interest and business associate to a wealthy business (William H. Macy)," the article states. "Trevor Morgan, who signed on last week, plays Macy's son." Filming is scheduled to begin this month "in Hawaii before moving to the Universal lot." One other new name mentioned in the article is James Taylor (not the singer), who is listed with Peter Buchman and Alexander Payne as JP3s' three writers. (Thanks 'Oviraptor')

Hawaiian Military Base Possible JP3 Location
Here's some interesting news: Steve over at IGN FilmForce has confirmed that JP3 producers have "approached the U.S. Department of Defense in Hawaii... interested in using one of Hawaii's military bases [for filming]". It is currently unknown which base Johnston and company would like to use (there are many in Hawaii, but FilmForce says they are focusing on the island of Oahu), and whether or not they have received permission to do so. (Thanks 'Pol')

JurassicPark.com to go Live Sept 15th
Jon from JP3HQ received word from an anonymous source that the JurassicPark.com website will go live on September 15th, which happens to be the date that the "monstrous media campaign" for the JP and TLW DVD's will begin on TV (coinciding with the start of the Summer Olympics). According to the source, "The site design looks great - the best movie website design I've ever seen! My favorite feature as yet is the Official JP Club, its way cool."

    JP3 Budget, Casting Rumors
Kathleen Turner The UK mag Total Film published a short blurb in the current issue with some additional info and speculation on JP3, according to inGenNET. According to them, Johnston has been given a budget of $83 million to play with -- substantially higher than TLW's $74 million budget. Total Film also reports that Jeff Goldblum has not been offered a role in the film, and that, once again, Kathleen Turner has been overheard as a casting possibility. Interestingly, the magazine reports that this may explain why she "suddenly ditched" her role in another upcoming film. The blurb also restates some rumors we've heard for awhile: JP3 will apparently take place on the mainland.

    Trevor Morgan to Play "Miles"?
I received an anonymous tip from someone claiming to know who has been cast as "Miles", the "12-year-old dinosaur fan" in JP3. It's Trevor Morgan, a young actor who has starred in several films (The Patriot and The Sixth Sense among them), but is probably best known for his excellent work in several episodes of E.R. last year as Dr. Anspaugh's dying son (pic). The tipster doesn't give any additional info, so as usual, take this with several grains of salt. (Pic courtesy of this Trevor Jones fan page)

    Hawaiian Set Work?
inGenNET claims to have heard from several sources who say that the old JP Set on the island of Kauai (now a Hawaiian tourist trap) has been closed to tourists and work has begun on renovating the structures. Their sources says that in addition to repainting the old buildings, construction work has begun on another structure, located close to the others.

20 Percent of JP3 Box-Office will go to Spielberg
With a battle over distribution of films heating up between Universal Studios and Dreamworks, Steven Speilberg is certainly not helping matters, as he apparently has demanded an unprecedented 20 percent take of JP3's "first-dollar gross" (around half the box-office earnings), according to this story on Inside Film. "Such terms far exceed any other producer's deal with a major studio," the article states. "Spielberg is not directing the film, which starts shooting in a few weeks and is set for a summer 2001 release. In fact, the parties have not yet determined what sort of credit he will take." (Thanks JP3 HQ)

Universal Park to be Used in JP3 Filming
Apparently the waiting area of "Triceratops Encounter" and the exterior of the "Discovery Center" at Universal Studios' Islands of Adventure theme park in Florida will be used during filming of JP3, according to an "IOA Press Release Paper" procured by inGenNET. "[These areas] will be used for a nighttime scene of Jurassic Park 3," says the blurb. "Filming is scheduled for late October and will not affect opening times of the concerned attractions."

'Walking With Dinos' Producers Plan Sequel
Adam sent along an article from the ITV TeleText system in England, with the word that the BBC is planning a followup to the "hugely successful" Walking With Dinosaurs series, entitled "Walking With Prehistoric Beasts", which will begin where the previous series left off (looking at creatures such as the "Indricotherium", the largest land mammal). The series will apparently cost £6.6 million, which is about 10 million US dollars.

    Sam Neill $15 Million Richer
JP3's producers must have reeeally wanted Sam Neill to star in JP3 -- he's apparently getting $15 million (his highest paycheck ever) to run from dinosaurs one more time, according to the Australian New Weekly Magazine. A good investment, if you ask me. (Thanks 'Muttaburrasaurus')

    JP3 Video Game News
Gladiator6k sends word that the July issue of "Videogame Maniac" in Germany has a short blurb on which company will produce console games for JP3 (along with other Universal licenses like "The Mummy 2" and "The Grinch") .. It's none other than the infamous Japanese VG company, Konami. Whether Konami will produce original games for the consoles, or just conversions of the 2 PC games Dreamworks Interactive will be working on (Story) is unknown. There is also no information currently on whether the "Konami Cheat" will work with the JP3 games.
