When JP first came out, much of the media attention focused on whether the film was too scary for kids. (From: Jedi)

    Filming Begins
Trillian reports that her local ABC TV affiliate (KAKE in Kansas) had a short blurb on JP3 during the entertainment news segment of the local news tonight, stating that filming on JP3 has in fact begun in Hawaii (which would confirm the story the other day), with Sam Neill, as we know, reprising his Alan Grant role.

    Universal Followup, Set Details
To answer yesterday's question, 'GapToothed' reports that the mysterious white wall the informant at Dark Horizons claimed was being constructed for JP3 (story) was actually built for The Grinch, which recently completed filming. He also adds that Stage 28 looks to be set for filming of JP3, with "lots of trees, brush and tree trunks outside", and that while Stage 12 and 27's doors were open, nothing was being built inside. "I'm sure in a few weeks there will be much more set construction," he says, "but right now it's pretty quiet."

    More JP3 Merchandise
Happy 4th everyone! Someone on Ebay is selling another piece of JP3 merchandise from the Licensing Show, the trade show where Universal unveiled the JP3 logo a few weeks back -- this time the product is a very cool JP3 carrying bag. Like the "Jurassic Water" awhile back, the seller says, this item was produced for the show only, and unfortunately will not be sold to the public. Like all Ebay auctions, please do not bid unless you intend to pay. (Thanks 'Utahraptor')

What the Heck is Universal Building?
    An informant over at
Dark Horizons sent Garth a description of a strange structure they're building on the backlot at Universal Studios. While on the studio tour, he says, "We strolled passed a huge set that our guide said is being constructed for Jurassic Park 3...it looked far from done. It was completely white and [had] a gigantic slope. It was curved, and looked like the single hugest structure on the entire studio lot." The informant also added that, "another complete set was up -- [the one] from the scene in the Lost World where Vince Vaughn ran up the steps to use the radio to call in help".

Neill's in, Alessandro Nivola in Talks

    Alessandro Nivola
Both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety make it official this morning: Sam Neill will be reprising his Alan Grant role in JP3. Also named in the stories is Alessandro Nivola (Face/Off, Timecode), who is apparently in negotiations to fill the "graduate student" role mentioned here awhile back. The article goes on to mention that "Shooting is set to begin in late July or August [with] an 18-week shoot ... scheduled with most production set for California along with three weeks in Hawaii". No mention of Costa Rica. (Pic care of The Unofficial Nivola Page)

    Christian Bale Rumor False
Predictably, the wild rumors last week (story) that Christian Bale was in talks to star in JP3, and that Lion's Gate Film was planning on co-producing the film with Amblin has been verified as a load of horse doo-doo, according to Las Cinco Muertes, the site that originally posted the rumor.

    The Requisite Human Genome Story
It seems like all news webmasters are required to mention the two teams that have finished mapping human DNA story yesterday, but I wasn't going to until I saw a link to this toungue-in-cheek story over at BluesNews. My favorite line: "We really didn't have all the code, but we did have aboot 97 percent, and for the last three we decided to use frog DNA".

    Casting Rumors
The grand and mighty Ain't It Cool News posted some more JP3 gossip this morning, with word from a Spanish source who read an article about the film in a newspaper there. The article first reports the same news as the article in the Costa Rican newspaper yesterday, but goes on to say that, "Richard Attenborough, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum are already signed, and that Katheleen Turner may be the surprise." The article also mentions that Spielberg may be sharing writing credits on the film with the other names we've heard (Goldman, Rosenberg, and Johnston). Strange that the Turner rumor refuses to go away....

    Plot Details From AICN
One of Harry's top-notch spies has checked in, providing a few details on JP3 from an article in the Costa Rican newspaper, "La Nacion".. Here's the full article. Excerpts:
"The article is an interview with Luis Jimenez, a Costa Rican working as an advisor on JP3. According to him the script has the dinosaurs showing up and wreaking havoc on the Costa Rican mainland. He maintained that the script is constantly going through many changes. His job is to get them photo documentation of the airport, one of our biggest hopitals, the morgue, police uniforms, ambulances, police cars, churches, etc. and other stuff on Costa Rica... He says that probably only second unit stuff would be done on location.

He mentions that principal photography starts in mid june in Hawaii and the scenes that take place on the Costa Rican mainland on August 14. A small city would be built on Universal Studios. On the first movie the only scene showing our capital city was when “Newman” was selling the embryos..."

Personally, I can't seem to find this article on the newspapers' website, but I'm still lookin... [Update: Someone in the comments found the story, it's located here.]

    Universal 'Panicked', says Insider
I talked again with the person who provided the information about the plot of JP3
yesterday, who I now believe really and truly works for Dreamworks Interactive.. When I asked him where he got his information, he replied, "I got the information through some people I know at Universal. The whole studio is somewhat panicked. Various scenes in the film have been fully fleshed-out and certain character roles and sets are being built. However, the script is not fully complete due to ongoing talks with various actors. The plot details I sent to you earlier are definite, providing the actors sign up." He also adds that Dreamworks is planning on "initially bringing out two PC games, and similar versions for various consoles, although we haven't yet fully decided."

    About this "DX" Thing..
A few people emailed me asking about what exactly "DX" is, mentioned yesterday in the information from the Dreamworks informant.. I was a bit confused myself, until a few people commented about it: It's a concept Crichton introduced in the second JP novel, "The Lost World". "Muldoon Rules" summed it up pretty well:

"DX is a sort of mad cow disease to dino's, it is caused by eating ground sheep extract as hatchlings. [Adds 'Digalot':] It caused the animals to become extremely hostile.."

    Prequel Confirmation, Plot Rumors
Well, I'm still trying to verify this stuff, but decided to post some information anyway: I've now received three different reports that JP3 will indeed be a prequel to 'The Lost World' (Not JP). In other words, the events in JP3 will take place after "Jurassic Park", but before "The Lost World" (pretty confusing, if you ask me). Additionally, a source from someone who apparently works at
Dreamworks Interactive sent along a few more tidbits of information:
    • "Yes, it is a prequel to "The Lost World".
    • It will be largely based on "The Lost World" novel with many new ideas, most of which Steven Spielberg has thought of.
    • The story will have loads of information about "DX".
    • Nobody has been cast yet, although Universal are desperate to get Neill, Dern and Goldblum back for at least small roles. Hammond plays a significant part in the movie, while his daughter and Ludlow also appear.
    • Universal are thinking of names for a rival genetics company, although this company is not highly important to the film.
    • The first island is featured [as well as] Site B.
    • A set for a huge factory/lab is being constructed. This is not supposed to be on site B."
Again, all of this info has not been confirmed, so take it as you will. (Thanks 'Bodhizefa' and 'darthvader')

    JP3 Tag-Line
Over on the message board, 'Utahraptor' pointed people towards this Ebay auction, where the guy is selling a JP3 "promo sheet", garnered at last week's Licensing Show in NYC. The interesting part, however, is the tag-line listed at the bottom of the poster... "Evolution of Adventure!".

    More News from Universal
Our source who works for the studio tour department over at Universal Studios checked in with a few new tidbits of information: First, he confirms the report from a few days ago that JP3 posters are scattered around the park.. He says that "there are posters on the Starway Escalators and there is one within the studio itself. They have the same logo that you showed on your site, so I guess that means it is official." He also adds that Stage 12 is where production is beginning, and yes, it was the same studio used for the visitor center set in JP. "There was a security guard setting outside (something that you don't normally see, not even on a big production)," he adds. Finally, he reports that strangly, the Site B set used in TLW is being re-built in the same location.. Why?

    Goldblum rumors, JP3 a prequel?
The rarely-updated JP3 section of IGN FilmForce updated with a page chock full of rumors, apparently from a "reliable source".. Probably most interesting is that Jeff Goldblum (aka Ian Malcolm) has been approached for a role in JP3, but has not decided to take it yet. IGN also goes on to report a rumor we've heard for months and months -- that JP3 will be a prequel, and that a subtitle for the film is still being decided on. Personally, this news seems a little sketchy to me, but hey, you never know. (Thanks CyberD)

    DVD Packaging Details
The Digital Bits posted some details about the packaging of the JP and TLW DVD's: "[The covers] will have a metallic foil appearance, Jurassic Park in gold, and The Lost World in silver. [These] new covers will look pretty snazzy."

Sam Neill to Return, Script troubles
Some good news and some bad news, care of the Hollywood Reporter this morning. First, a short blurb confirms Harry's rumor yesterday that, indeed, Sam Neill "is in talks to come aboard [JP3]". However, the blurb goes on to mention this disturbing bit of news: (Saw this on AICN)
"Although there is no completed script for 'JP3,' production is said to be slated for a summer start. Details on the project are being tightly guarded by the studio."

    Studio Tour News
While visiting Universal Studios last weekend, 'Ethan Hunt' observed that "there were JP3 posters all over the park", and that his Studio Tour guide reported that they are now building sets inside the same sound stage as the visitor center from JP was built (stage 12?).

Christian Bale in JP3?, and Other Weird Rumors
Break out the salt, cause this has to win for weirdest rumor in awhile.. Las Cinco Muertes is reporting that Lions Gate Films may be thinking about co-producing JP3 with Amblin and Universal. Their source also says that Christian Bale, a regular star in Lions Gate films, has had meetings about a possible part in the film.

Sam Neill to Return, says Harry
The God of movie-news webmasters, Harry Knowles, posted a short news bit on his site this morning apparently from someone "inside" at Universal. According to them, "Sam Neill has appeared on some documents from UNIVERSAL into the agent/management ranks as returning to JURASSIC PARK." Harry says that he's still trying to verify this info, so I'd still take it as a rumor for now.

    Another DP?
Glen from Las Cinco Muertes pointed me towards the IMDB's entry for JP3, which now lists the name Shelly Johnson along with Mikael Salomon as JP3's Directors of Photography. You'll remember that the annoucement that Salomon was JP3's DP was one of the first annoucements regarding JP3 back in February. As for Johnson (not to be confused with JP3's director, Joe Johnston), she has served as cinematographer on several projects, most of which for television.

    Crichton's Involvement
The toy-industry website Raving Toy Maniac posted a story last week about Hasbro's annoucement that they would be producing a line of JP3 toys (see below). However, one additional line is of interest: According to them, the story for JP3 is written by "Johnston and Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton". You'll remember that Crichton has never actually stated the status of his involvement with the JP3 project.. Since this isn't an official source, however, I'd take this news with a grain or two of salt. (Thanks 'HyperBoyBrisobel')

    More Universal Licensing Details
I sent an email to the guy who's selling the Jurassic Water (see below) up on Ebay (Whoa, bidding is up to $16 bucks now!), hoping to get a little more info on JP's presence at the Licensing Show last week. Sure enough, Max responded, sending along a few Universal promotional materials, which may be of interest:
