In reality, no self-respecting computer programmer would program essential systems (lights, door locks, etc.) to fail if the computer system went down.

    On SFX
A Silicon Graphics press release extolls the wonder of their fancy "Origin Family Servers", which they say contributed to the special effects for "five of the summer's biggest blockbuster films." On JP3, they have this to say:
Model development at ILM of Jurassic Park III began well over a year ago. ILM then completed more than 400 2D and 3D effects shots using Silicon Graphics O2 workstations, primarily running Softimage for animation. The flesh simulation application within an ILM proprietary dynamics engine, originally developed for The Mummy and written on the O2 systems, was adapted for dinosaur skin simulation. Some of the ``creatures,'' as ILM's Tim McLaughlin, creature supervisor for Jurassic Park III calls the dinosaurs, were based on the designs of the previous films while some were new or totally rebuilt. More than 60 shots featured flesh or cloth simulations (used, for example, for the pteranodon's wings).

``There were a half-dozen hero-style creatures and another five or six that were used in background shots,'' McLaughlin said. ``T-rex, which was prominently featured in both Jurassic Park and The Lost World, came back for a cameo in Jurassic Park III. We had to take a look at the dinosaur in terms of how it was structured: what its patch structure was, what its chaining rig (animation control) was, and how it needed to perform in the new movie. We knew we wanted to do flesh simulation -- flesh, bone and muscle -- on most of the featured creatures. We had to resurface the entire T-rex, using what we had originally created on SGI systems as the basis of a template, and then repainted and rerigged the creature.''

One of the many complex CGI scenes that demanded the performance of both the Silicon Graphics O2 visual workstations and ILM's array of SGI 2000 series servers for rendering is the dinosaur fight sequence, featuring the T-rex and an all-new spinosaurus. ``This scene needed two huge CGI creatures doing a Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier imitation,'' said McLaughlin. ``The chance to work on the choreography and what I call the environmental effects -- the way the skin of the animals moves, how the trees and bushes and dust around them react to their movements and making everything have the right scale and physical dynamics -- was truly an exciting challenge.''

McLaughlin, who has worked at ILM for seven years, concluded, ``SGI systems are all I've ever worked on, and they work great for what I need to do. In Jurassic Park III, the complexity of what we were dealing with on a shot-by-shot basis is just amazing to me. The dinosaur models that we worked with are three times as heavy, in a geometric sense, as they were in The Lost World, and yet we were able to accomplish the production of the shots in a shorter time period.

    JP3 Opens Well Internationally
JP3 continues its run through the international box office this week, pulling in a good amount, though by no means record-breaking. According to this Variety article, JP3 took in $925,000 in Hong Kong, $133,000 in Belgium, and has made $5 million over 9 days in Japan. (Update) In total, JP3 has made $97,924,541 internationally. On the home front, JP3 slipped to 6th place in its 4th week of release with $7.3 million, bumped down by new releases American Pie 2 ($45 million) and The Others ($13.6 million). Thanks Glen.

    JP3 on TV
An article from this morning's Variety is reporting Universal hopes to "ignite a bidding war" for the coveted JP3 television rights. Due to the current economic downturn, it seems unlikely that a major network will snap up the film, as FOX did so quickly with TLW (they paid a reported $80 million for the rights), but Variety speculates that JP3 may be aquired by one of the movie channels instead -- "Starz!", for instance. If a movie channel did buy the rights, it means we could see JP3 on television as early as September 2002.

    JP3 Feature on CanalPlus
French website CanalPlus has a pretty big feature on JP3 up on their site (CanalPlus is owned and operated by Universal Studios). The highlight of the feature is probably the "Making of Jurassic Park 3" video, which runs a whopping 20 minutes long and features chats with all the major JP3 players. It's mostly promotional fluff, but cool nonetheless. Less interesting are several 5 minute long interviews with some JP3 cast members conducted by our French friend who hosted the previous JP3 CanalPlus special several months back. His questions aren't the best, but he did manage to get a few amusing responses. He asked Tea Leoni, for instance, why she would let her son fly so close to a dinosaur island, to which she responded, "Thank God someone asked me that question! I mean, I woulndn't let my kid parasail, for starters, and then name of the thing is Dino-Soar.. you know they're there.. I mean, snap out of it! So I decided to be that wonderful mother [in the film] who made a really big mistake and was going to make up for it." Asked which dino Alessandro Nivola would take back home, he responded, "Those little ones... so you could step on them and they'd die." (Thanks inGenNET and 'Embryo'.)

    EW Interviews Neill
Better late than never, I suppose, is this Entertainment Weekly.com interview with JP3 star Sam Neill, posted on Tuesday. The discussion ranges from dinos to "The Dish", with the actor admitting to several ukulele (yes, ukulele) jam sessions with Bill Macy while on the set of JP3: "Well, Bill Macy is actually a very, very good ukulele player. And Alessandro Nivola and Trevor Morgan play guitar. So there'd be a bit of jamming going on. Bill plays better ukulele then me, which is irritating. I'll see if I can do something about that. Either I'll get better or I'll just break his fingers." (Thanks 'JP Animal Control')

What's Next For the JP3 Cast?
What's next for Neill, Macy, and the rest now that they've got JP3 under their belts? Let's ask the magic of the IMDB!
    • Laura Dern (Ellie) will be the first JP3 star to appear in another project -- she'll play a nun in Within These Walls. It'll air August 20th on Lifetime. After that, she'll appear in the dentist comedy Novocaine with Kevin Bacon. It's set for a September 14th release.
    • Sam Neill (Grant) is gearing up for production of Dirty Deeds with John Goodman, a film about organized crime in 1960s Sydney. It'll be out sometime next year.
    • William H. Macy (Paul) and Laura Dern (Ellie) will team up as a couple who are mistakingly identified as Jews during World War II in Focus, an adaption of the Arthur Miller book. It'll hit theaters in October.
    • In addition to 'Focus', Macy will also star in the upcoming indie comedy Welcome to Collinwood with JP3 star Michael Jeter (Udesky). It's about a bunch of guys who try and rob a pawn shop. The film just completed shooting, and will be out in Early 2002.
    • Tea Leoni (Amanda), meanwhile, is hard at work filming People I Know, with Al Pacino and TLW's Richard Schiff. It's described as a dramatic comedy/romance (?) about "politics, drugs, and scandals". It'll be out in December.
    • Trevor Morgan (Eric) will be all over the silver screen come September: He'll be seen in The Glass House, a thriller about an orphan who is taken in by a dangerous couple on September 7th, and Hardball, a flick about inner-city baseball (with Keanu Reeves), on September 14th. Trevor is also currently filming The Rookie, another baseball movie, due March 2002.
    • Alessandro Nivola (Billy) jumped right from filming JP3 to the set of Carolina, a romance flick starring Julia Stiles. It'll be out in early 2002.
    • Taylor Nichols (Mark) will play a recurring character on HBO's new comedy series about the modern-day marriage, "The Mind Of The Married Man". The series debuts September 11th.
    • I read somewhere what Joe Johnston will be up to next, but it has slipped my mind.. Writing team Jim Taylor and Alexander Payne, however, are trying their directing hands at About Schmidt, a drama starring Jack Nicholson and which has very early Oscar buzz going for it. It may be out by the end of the year. JP3 Composer Don Davis isn't taking too much of a vacation, he'll be scoring The Matrix Reloaded for release next year.

    International Box Office Report
Glen once again reports on the International box office figures for JP3, rapidly increasing as the film opens in new markets: As of yesterday, it had pulled in $64,599,919, and occupies the #1 spot in Argentina, Taiwan, Mexico, Spain, and Brazil. The grand total world-wide, therefore, is about $211 million so far. (Thanks 'JP Animal Control')

    JP DTS DVD Support Number
Word comes from The Digital Bits that if you have the old version of the DTS Jurassic Park DVD (with the missing bass track), you can call 972-293-5903 for information on how to exchange your disc for a fixed copy. Again, this is only the DTS version for DTS equipment.

    JP3 Breaks Into Top 100
The final numbers are in from this past weekend (JP3's third week of release) which had the film coming it at 4th place with a take of $12,272,810. Rush Hour 2, meanwhile, earned a respectable $67 million, bumping Planet of the Apes to second. The total POTA take now trails the US gross of JP3 by about $23 million. One more box office stat: JP3 has broken onto the list of top 100 movies, coming in at #86, just under 1989's Lethal Weapon 2.

    Kirby Ringtone
    Want to turn your Nokia cell phone ring into Paul Kirby's "Paint and Tile Plus" theme? 'Swami Parasaurolophus' provides some instruction. On a 3310/3330 go into "tones", then "composer" on the menu, then press the following keys: "5 8 3 4 8 3 2 9 1 5 1 * 1 * *". (The actual notes are "8g1 8e1 16f1 16e1 8d1 8c1 8g1 8c2 8c1".)

    Dino Nose Controversy
Here's a story which may be of interest: An Ohio University palentologist claims that the common idea that dinosaur nostrils were situated on the top of the animals head is incorrect, and instead is proposing they were near the bottom. "Even though it’s a radical change in how we view the appearance of these animals," he says, "Basically it makes them much more consistent with what we see in animals today." (Thanks a bunch of people.)

    JP3 Slips to 4th Friday
Jurassic Park 3 slipped to fourth place yesterday, behind new release Rush Hour 2 ($22 million), simian giant Planet of the Apes ($8 million), and poorly-reviewed Princess Diaries ($8 million). JP3 took in $3.5 million Friday, bringing its grand US total to $138,251,415. (Thanks 'Sgon2')

    Behind-the-scenes JP3 Footage For Download!
Ever wonder where entertainment TV shows get their so-called "exclusive" behind-the-scenes video? Well, it all comes from a tape sent out by the studio, called a "B-Roll". Now, thanks to (legitimate) file-sharing service Scour.net, you can download the whole B-Roll, including more than 12 minutes of amazing video from the JP3 set! Highlights of the clips include building the spinosaur and pteranodon, "behind the camera" clips from about a dozen scenes (with a lot of moments where Joe Johnston says "Action!"), and even a look at how the CGI was created (including three different renders of the herd scene where we see the CG progress though production). Also on the site are a bunch of canned interviews with different JP3 cast and crew, plus something called "JP3 Trailer, 1st, 2nd, 3rd Pass", and other clips from the movie! Some very very cool stuff, so get downloading! In order to get these clips you'll need a few things: Windows Media Player, a Scour Exchange account, and Scour's special software. (Thanks jurassiraptor)

    Bones and Bodies
The new issue of Entertainment Weekly features two short JP3 mentions, both having oddly to do with death: In the magazine's list of "summer movie fatalities", they report JP3 contributed 4 on-screen deaths to a summer where 407 people/apes have bit the dust. Elsewhere in the issue, they ask a pathologist whether a human body (Ben) could decompose in 8 weeks. "If it's in a tropical environment, and there's a lot of insects and wild animals...then all the soft tissues could conceivably be removed," they said. "[But] it's unlikely the dead guy would've lost his Hawaiian shirt, as he does in the movie."

Random fact: Over the past year, 47 different newspaper and magazine articles have used a headline containing the phrase "Dino-Mite" when reffering to the Jurassic Park franchise.

    New DTS JP DVD Released
Bill from The Digital Bits is reporting this morning that the "corrected" version of the DTS audio Jurassic Park DVD has been released in stores, and the difference between the new and old DTS recordings is "startling". The original DTS pressing was critized by fans for a missing bass track, which Universal has quietly fixed in new versions. The only way to identify the new copies, however, is to look for "Jurassic Park (WS) (DTS)" on the top of the box. And again, this is only for those of us with special DTS audio equipment.

    JP3 Better Reviewed Than POTA
Tell your POTA-loving friends to put this in their pipe and smoke it: As several people pointed out, according to movie-review-ranking site Rotten Tomatoes, JP3 is an all-around better reviewed movie than POTA. Here's the numbers: Out of 89 POTA reviews by major film critics, 47% were considered "fresh". However, out of 90 JP3 reviews, more than half (51%) were positive. Take that, apes!

    Box Office Fun
Just a quick update with some box office numbers: JP3 is still holding on to 2nd place with a $2.3 taken in yesterday ($132,459,270 total), with POTA in front with $6.2 million. Meanwhile, JP3 is doing well at the international box office: Glen reports its made a total of $43 million overseas, and still holds the #1 spot in the UK. Another interesting box office note: JP3 has already overtaken two summer 2001 hits, "Tomb Raider" and "The Fast and the Furious". Next up for JP3 is "Pearl Harbor", sitting at $193.6 million. (Also thanks Movies.yahoo.com. Update: I messed my numbers up a bit, as 'Darknodin' pointed out: comparing POTA to JP3 on their 6th day of release, POTA is leading.. but only by a little.)

    New Dino Discovered

    New 'Survival' Shots
JPAftermath noticed this recent article on gaming website GamersPulse.com, which looks at the upcoming Playstation 2 game in development now by Savage Entertainment. There are six new screenshots, so head over there to check them out. "The game’s plot, which is somewhat different from the film’s plot, has players acting as David Espinoza, a member of a distinguished science team, on a mission of research. But a player’s fun is about to be cut short when an evil, terrorist corporation, on a search for Dino DNA, attempts a hostile takeover."

    'Timeline' Movie Cast
Not really JP3 related, but word comes from this morning's Hollywood Reporter that "The Fast and The Furious" actor Paul Walker has signed on to play Chris in the big-screen adaption of Michael Crichton's "Timeline". Gerard Butler ("Dracula 2000") will play Andre. Richard Donner ("Lethal Weapon 4", "The Goonies") will direct, with filming to begin in March. (Thanks Joonas)

Tiniest Bit of JP3 DVD News
It's kind of crazy for me to post this, but DVD site The Digital Bits provided a small bit of non-news on the JP3 DVD: the producer of the DVD, Laurent Bouzereau (who worked on the JP+TLW DVD's and several other Spielberg DVD projects) was unable to attend a roundtable discussion on DVD last weekend because "he's working on the [JP3] DVD and things got a little hectic for him." The highly anticipated disc is due out December 11th.

Macy Says He Apologized To Spielberg For His Comments
A blurb about JP3 star William H. Macy on the IMDB.com today (originally reported by the Calgary Sun) says the actor "felt compelled" to write JP3 executive producer Steven Spielberg a note apologizing for his now infamous negative comments about JP3 last year. However, Macy still insisted that his original words were "taken out of context by a website and reprinted in the press". Here's a brief history of the events, as recorded on DansJP3Page.com:
    • On December 17, 2000, the semi-tabloid newspaper New York Post published a story where Macy asked rhetorically, "Who launched a $100 million ship without a rudder? And who's getting fired for this?", commenting on the reportedly slow pace of filming and lack of a completed script. "But that's the way it goes with these movies," Macy said. "I think someone should be shot, but you know, I'm not in charge."
    • The report was quickly echoed on this site, TV Guide Online, People Magazine, and other countless publications.
    • Five days later, Macy appeared on the Tonight Show, where he changed his tune, calling it "phenomenal [to be working on JP3].. it's like being asked to do another Star Wars."
    • Macy would say several weeks later that his negative comments were taken out of context and that he was actually talking about another film.
The actor echoed those same sentiments today, telling the Sun, "I was railing against films in general [and] was devastated because legitimate publications reprinted the story from [an] Internet site without checking its authenticity." Note that Macy has never denied he used the words "$100 million dollars", "train wreck", and "Jurassic Park 3" together. (Thanks Alisha)

    Bet on JP3
Get your bookie on the line! A story in this week's People Magazine reports that London-based wagering house "Cantor Index" is now accepting bets on how films will perform. "For Jurassic Park III, they predicted a $47-49 million opening weekend," People reports. "By their system, anyone who wagered $10 that the film would gross more than that would win $10 for each million dollars over Cantor's estimate."

    Eat Your Oatmeal
I've been meaning to mention this story, which appeared first on JPDatabase: According to Joe Johnston in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, the steaming piles of Spinosaur poo in JP3 were actually "250 gallons of oatmeal". Some more juicy (no pun intended) info:

[William H.] Macy, who shot the scene at 4 a.m. in winter, wasn't amused. "I'll never eat oatmeal again," he says. "It was cold and clammy." But Leoni made the most of it. "It was delicious," she chirps. "There was a little cinnamon in there, so I'd just lick it off after each take." Hubby David Duchovny has little sympathy for her sticky situation. He sniffs, "I had to go up an [alien's] ass in Evolution."
