    The Camp

Special Agent Spencer Haus slowly regains consciousness. He looks around himself and realizes that he is not in the boats anymore. His is lying on-shore, wrapped in a thermal sleeping bag, and the first rays of morning are breaking through the mountains above.

Diego, one of the Costa Rican soldiers, is the first to notice Haus’s re-entry into the world of consciousness. He alerts one of the other soldiers, who bends over the agent.

Haus asks what happened; he can remember the beginning of a fire-fight, but no more. It is explained to him that rebel soldiers had descended upon and ambushed the team, and they had lost twelve soldiers, along with Dr. Grant, Dr. Levine and Dr. Sattler. The mission was a failure and they were attempting to salvage their equipment so that they could call for rescue.

When asked about the boats, Diego informs Haus that the third boat (the one Haus was in) was completely destroyed, the second boat (with all of the equipment) had only just been discovered washed up on shore -- with a gaping hole in the bottom. The remaining boat was too small to fit the entire team in; it would be impossible and dangerous to attempt to transport the survivors and equipment in less than two trips. It would be more feasible to call for help.

But, so far, they weren’t able to get the radio working.

At that moment, there is another rustling in the trees. The mercenaries swiftly jump up, surrounding the camp with their guns pointed in every direction. They are leaving no bases un-covered.

Then Dr. Ellie Sattler, haggard and worn, emerges from the jungle.

    The River

Jose Blancha wakes his companions. Realizing that the boats will not be coming back for them, Grant, Levine and Blancha are unsure of what to do. Then Grant remembers something -- he has a satellite phone in his pocket, which he can use to contact Dr. Ian Malcolm, who can get some help. Just as Grant begins to dial, he sees the animal.

On the other side of the river is a adult dilophosaur, twenty feet high. It is on its haunches, silently lapping up water.

Levine starts to say something, but is silenced by Dr. Grant. The other two men look up and see what Grant is seeing. Levine starts to remind Grant that the dinosaur can’t hurt them from where they are; Grant tells Levine that the dinosaur can spit.

The three men reach a wordless decision to turn and move away.

    San Diego

Dr. Ian Malcolm is shopping at a grocery store when he notices the man that is following him. Malcolm tests his theory out by moving to various spots around the store -- there always is the other man, tall, with a brush-cut, browsing but never buying. Malcolm quickly leaves the store. The man follows.

    The Camp

Ellie Sattler is obviously disturbed by the news that Grant’s boat had been destroyed, and, supposedly, himself along with it. Sattler adamantly refuses to believe that, however; she insists Grant and the others are still alive.

Perhaps to keep her mind off of more worrisome topics, she aids in the repair of the radio. Unexpectedly, the radio turns on; they receive a crackling transmission. The voice on the other end speaks about a ‘visit’ and a ‘park’. The transmission quickly ends as abruptly as it began; the radio is out again.

But not before the source’s position can be triangulated: the western slopes of Cerro Matama, about seven miles to the north. Help is half a day’s walk away.

Jesus refuses to let a team head into the mountains, but finally he grudgingly agrees to lead one himself, leaving Diego in charge. Before he leaves with Dr. Sattler and four soldiers, he whispers into Diego’s ear: ‘If White finds out, you know what to do.’

Diego earnestly nods, and the five men (and one woman) disappear into the forest.

    The Road

Lewis Dodgson’s car bounces along the road atop Cerro Matama. He speaks to Ed Regis through the radio, making sure that everything is ready for the president’s visit. He ends ominously: ‘If anything goes wrong it’s your ass.’

    Below Cerro Matama

Levine, Grant and Blancha step around a bend in the brook, and suddenly they emerge from the forest: they’ve arrived at a small pool of water, fed by a low, trickling waterfall. And at the other side of the pool, barely a dozen yards away, is a small flock of procompsagnathus. The three men are startled. Grant stands stoically silent, Levine starts to move excitedly forward, and Blancha withdraws an explosive grenade.

Before Levine has moved five yards along the side of the pool, Blancha throws the grenade into the herd. He screams at Levine to drop to the ground; Levine, at first, doesn’t realize what’s happened, but when he does, he immediately runs back a yard or two and throws himself to the ground. There is a huge explosion that’s too close for comfort for Levine at least -- when he stands, there is a large urine stain on the front of his pants. His embarrassment is docile compared to his anger at Blancha’s rash move.

Blancha doesn’t have a chance to respond, as Grant points something out to the mercenary soldier: a helicopter, marked with the BioSyn International logo, is landing in the mountains barely two miles away.

The three men unanimously agree to make for that spot where the helicopter landed. They don’t notice the bounding figure of an adult dilophosaur in the trees behind them.

    The Helipad

President Del Toro, accompanied by bodyguards and a well-dressed lawyer, steps out of the helicopter and is greeted by Ed Regis, head of BioSyn public relations. Regis enthusiastically shakes the President’s hand, greets him, thanks him, and assures him he’ll have a great time. Somebody mentions that Regis is ‘more BS than PR.’

Regis receives a cool response from the president. Seeming slightly disappointed, Regis guides Del Toro to a Jeep that is waiting, also emblazoned with a BioSyn logo.

    San Diego

Dr. Malcolm is staring out the window at the sedan parked down the street. His follower sits silently inside, the lights out, waiting for something. The logo on the side of the car is for ‘BioSyn Pizza’.

Odd name for a pizza place.

Dr. Malcolm is about to reach for his satellite phone when it suddenly comes to life, ringing. He picks it up.

    ‘Grant?’

    Cerro Matama

In the early evening light, Alan Grant speaks into his satphone, which is finally working. Levine and Blancho silently watch on.

Grant asks if Malcolm knows what BioSyn International is; Malcolm says he was about to ask Grant the same thing. Malcolm agrees to do some checking up on BioSyn; he also agrees to notify the authorities that three of the team members are in need of rescue.

At that moment, Richard Levine screams. Grant wheels around to see an adult dilophosaur standing across the field. Grant realizes that they have been stalked probably for much of the day. The dinosaurs must not have a sufficient food supply, or else--

The dinosaur’s necks frills fly open, it throws its head back and spits, the gooey substance landing on Levine. Grant tells the doctor to remain absolutely still, but this is too much for Levine. He turns and runs, the dinosaur leaping after him. Jose Blancha shoots at the dinosaur, misses; the animal jumps and knocks Levine over. Blancha shoots one more time, this time hitting his target. The dilophosaur falls to the side and Levine shakily picks himself up. This time he commends Blancha for his rash move.

    The Camp

Special Agent Spencer Haus, under cover of night, speaks into his satellite phone. As he does so, Dr. Hiram White steps up to him, inquiring what the CIA man has in his hands. Haus tells White it is a malfunctioning satphone; White decides to try it for himself. There is somebody on the other end when White grabs it from the agent -- it works! And Haus knew about it all along.

The soldiers gather around as White confronts Haus. Haus nods to Diego, who is about to put his gun to the back of Hiram White’s head when, suddenly, one of the soldiers yelps and disappears into the jungle. His blood-curdling scream lasts only a moment.

Diego jumps into action, commanding his forces to fortify the camp. Meanwhile, Spencer Haus tells Hiram White that they will not be leaving camp until Jesus and the others return, satphone or not.

    The Canyon

Dr. Alan Grant, followed by Jose Blancha and the still shaky Dr. Richard Levine, descends into a steep, rocky canyon. When they reach the bottom, they take in their surroundings. To their right the Canyon comes to an abrupt end -- there is a waterfall and, above that, a slate-grey building. A pumphouse.

There is another sound besides the rushing water -- it’s a buzz, the sound of 10 000 volts of electricity humming through nearby wires. The men follow a stream at the canyon’s base around a bend. Up ahead they see two things of interest: a bridge and a high electric fence.
