    Primal Prey: Chapter Six
    By Stryderman

    Chapter 6
    The Storm

    Isla Nublar, October 1993

As Dodgson, Jack, Thorne and Johnn reached the G-Group’s helicopter, Dodgson lamented the loss of his vehicle. He cursed the G-Group for destroying his helicopter. He insisted that they pause to collect some of the things from his helicopter.
“How about no!” shouted Thorne at this suggestion.
    “Just for a-”
    “No.”
    “I need-”
“-to get on the chopper. Get on! Or, alternatively, you can stay here and get eaten alive by these big lizards. Your choice, Dodgson.
    “C’mon, Jack.”
Johnn looked to Dodgson. “Stuff you, Dodgson,” he said, and he climbed onto the helicopter behind Jack and Thorne. Dodgson stood for a moment, then saw the rotors of the helicopter begin to spin. He was gripped by a sudden terror as an unearthly wail filled the air.
“Wait! Wait!” he screamed. “I’m coming too!” He ran up into the helicopter as it began to rise.
When on board, Dodgson sat down and pulled out a radio. The hit it a few times after switching on the radio. He peered out the window at the rapidly departing island while he waited for the high-pitched squealing of the radio to die down.
“First good idea you’ve had all day, Dodgson,” growled Thorne. “Give me the radio. I’ve a mind to send the military to bomb that forsaken island.”
“No,” said Dodgson. “It’s tuned to my labs back at Area Fifty-two. Hello,” he said, speaking into the radio, “Hello, do you copy? CF1, this is LD, come in CF1.”
There was a hiss of static. Then, “Dr Dodgson? Is that you?”
    “Who’s this?”
    “John Wills.”
“Hey, John, I’ve got some more DNA samples, three. How’s your testing going—have you found any glitches?
“No, Lewis, everything’s fine. All the gene sequence gaps have been covered. I can now tell you that growth acceleration is unnecessary. When do you need these animals?”
“The seminar is in two thousand and one. We’ve got eight years to grow our dinosaurs, can you do that? How long will it take to grow?”
“Well, the maturity rate seems to differ from dinosaur to dinosaur, but all of them will reach maturity after two to four years, give or take. In four years, I can give you a fully matured, living, breathing Tyrannosaurus rex”
“Excellent,” said Dodgson, even though he wasn’t keen on seeing another T-rex any time soon. “Begin cloning right away, I’ll be back by tomorrow noon. Dodgson out.”
“Hang on,” said Thorne, sitting at the controls, “Bit of a storm. Hold on to something. It might get-”
With a massive bang the whole helicopter shuddered and span out of control. Another wave of wind, this time from above, sent the helicopter spinning again.
The helicopter straightened out again, Thorne in gentle but firm control. He was still in a daze. He’d lost two of his teammates on the island. He was in no shape to be concentrating on flying. But, after an hour or two, the feeling of loss was replaced by the monotony of flying. Rain started to hammer on the windshield as night dropped. Suddenly the rain changed direction. Instead of raining down, it came sideways at the helicopter. A buffer of wind slammed into the helicopter. There was a nasty jolt, and Thorne smashed his head on the control panels.
    “Hey, Thorne!” said Jack. “Thorne!”
Thorne was apparently unconscious, and the helicopter was heading nose-down towards the dark, stormy ocean. The storm clouds were blocking all of the moon’s light as Jack tried desperately to wake Thorne up.
“Get out of it,” said Johnn. He pushed Thorne’s body aside, and took the controls. Thorne’s head was bleeding. Johnn sat down. Huge raindrops lashed the windshield, making it impossible to see. Johnn switched the lights on. It illuminated the rain for about one metre in front of them. Just then, some lightning flashed in the distance. Then, ten yards to their left, the air was illuminated by a bright, twisting jagged stab of white energy.
“That was too close,” said Johnn, referring to the lightning.
Then, from the cloud directly in front of the men, more lightning issued forth, and hit the closest things to the clouds—the helicopter’s nose. Sparks flew and Johnn shouted out as he was thrown back to the rear of the helicopter. Jack was raised from his seat also, and hit his head on one of the frame supports of the helicopter.

Dodgson yelled in panic when the lightning hit the chopper. His hat flew off his head, and the other two conscious men were knocked into unconsciousness. As Johnn’s limp body flew past Dodgson, he noticed Thorne’s body jerking from the electricity.
Dodgson had buckled his seatbelt, and, luckily, caught his hat before it flew from his reach. He saw his bag, the one with the DNA samples in it, at the front if the chopper, under the control panel. How it got there, he didn’t know. But he needed to get it, at all costs.
He undid his seatbelt and crawled along the floor towards the front of the vehicle. He was shaken as the wind buffeted the craft, and he slammed into the side of one of the chairs. He rubbed his ribs for a moment, then crawled a bit more. He reached for his bag. Dodgson cursed under his breath. It was caught behind the pedals!
He looked up, out of the window and saw rain, lots of rain, for about a metre in front of the shield. Then, out of nowhere, a massive tree shot up and slammed into the helicopter. The windshield smashed, showering Dodgson with glass, then Dodgson screamed as the helicopter shook violently. He then knew no more.
