    Modern Day Devils - P9 - 2
    By Snake - Mark

    Mark pushed his way through the narrow hallways, moving slowly in-between students who simply stand in the middle of the all ready crowded area. For five years he has been able to tolerate the ignorance some people have, but for some reason it all seems to be getting to him a lot more. Those that caused the crowding of the hallways were the younger grades, mostly eight and ninth graders. As a senior with an increasing case of senioritis and impatience, Mark pushes his way through the halls as if he were a god, which isn’t all to far from true, now.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Third period Orchestra class, in which Mark played an old, worn down violin, took place in a small, thirty person capacity room. The room was used to perform minor plays, which required a set the site of a cardboard box, so where desks and chairs should be, risers were placed to accommodate the small crowd for the insignificant plays.
    The class itself consisted of ten people, of which only two were tolerable in Mark’s eyes. One of them was Mark’s best friend for six years, Jonathan Romanov. Romanov has the same sarcastic nature as Mark had (before his life took it’s slow decent to hell). Throughout their years of being acquaintances, Mark and Jonathan talked about and contemplated over a theory the two developed. Their theory, as unusual as it was, almost completely mirrors the events that are happening today. God and the Devil divulge in a war over Earth, believing the ruler of the great land would rule over everything. They had once submitted their theory to The Skeptical Inquirer, but it was never published (figuring for the reason that the theory is and was an insult against every religion).
    Mark made his way into the small room sluggishly, his strength seemingly washed away by the boredom and insignificance school now possessed. He took his usual seat, third row of the riser, fourth seat from the left. Alone he sat, his arms crossing each other over his chest, his leather jacket making a small squeaking noise as he moved. Tilting his head back, he closed his eyes and intended to keep it that way for the rest of the period, but knowing his two friends in this class, he wouldn’t stay this way for long.
    Jonathan pushed through the classroom door, humming a tune that seemed to change pitch every other note. Jon was mostly a chipper fellow, unless you did not associate with them, in which case he seemed to be completely depressed and angered. His mind was always full of ideas, extremely creative ideas that, if put to good use, could turn the most boring day into a day at the circus. Mark admired him for his sense of humor, which extended further than any comedians. At every second he could, Jon would belch out something funny, or if nothing came to mind, he would simply belch to keep silence from overtaking his conversations.
    Mark watched his friend as he approached, a metallic music stand in one hand, his violin in the other. Shaking his head and laughing lightly, Mark tipped his head back and closed his eyes again.
    “Rough weekend?” Jon questioned, noticing the tired look Mark’s body seemed to have.
    Mark smiled, “That’s one way of putting it.”
    “You get screwed?” Jon sat down in the seat in front of Mark. Across his face he had a shit eating grin. If Mark had gotten lucky, he would have proved him wrong on the fact that Mark thinks he repels the female race.
    “Something like that, just not as pleasurable.” Mark laughed at himself and sat back up in his chair. “What about you, how was your weekend?”
    “Eh, same shit, y’know.” Jon cracked his neck and looked to the door. “Where’s Andria? The bell’s about to ring.”
    Mark grew quiet. There were very few things that could ruin an entire school day, and the absence of Andria Lee was one of them. Mark never believed it, but if you had eyes you could see that the teen had an attraction to the girl. You could see his eyes light up each time they made contact with her, and that small natural smile would cross his lips every time she made some sort of physical contact with him. In few words, Mark was in love. That is, unless you were Mark; then you simply saw it as a close friendship.
    “Hey, bud. You all right?” Jon tapped Mark’s knee, snapping him out of his dream state.
    “Yeah, I was just thinking.” Mark shook his head to clear his mind, and then turned his attention to Jon.
    “I’m sure she’s just a little late. I saw her this morning come into school.”
    Mark’s eyes seemed to grow, a classic defensive “who me” expression crossing over his face. “I wasn’t thinking about her. I don’t care if she shows up or not.” Mark did his best to lie, but after so many years, it was nearly impossible to lie to Jon.
    Jon nodded; going along with Mark’s acting. He was the first person to realize the attraction the two had. They would always talk for an entire class period, and then they would talk all the way to their next classes, and even after school they would be seen talking on the way to the buses. Jon could understand why Mark was attracted to her. She was gorgeous. Her big brown eyes could cause any man’s heart to stop if the right look were given. Soft red hair flowed about her head, covering her ears and a bit of her whitish face. Her lips, full and red would form a heart whenever she kissed someone, and Mark wished that he would be that someone someday, though he would never admit it.
    Mark shook his head. Even with what is going on he couldn’t keep his mind off Andria. Especially the moment she walked into the classroom. His eyes turned to the door as she entered, in his mind a white aura glowed around her, making her an angel.
    “Hey Mark… Jon.” The angel lifted her hand and waved, her other hand holding two books close to her.
    Jon waved, and then nudged Mark’s shoulder, whispering close to him. “Wake up buddy.”
    Mark snapped out of his trance and smiled softly, nodding once. “Hi Andria.”
    Andria’s eyes seemed to fall down to the floor as Mark spoke. “Hi.” She paused, moving closer to Mark; taking the seat next to her friend, Andria ducked her head down slightly, lifting her eyes to look at Mark. “I heard about what happened over the weekend.”
    Mark’s eyes seemed to grow wide. “Justine?”
    Andria nodded, lifting her head up so her eyes met his. “What’s going on with you lately? Everyone says you’re not yourself.” She smiled slightly at her next thought. “There were even a few witnesses to your confrontation with Teesel.”
    Dropping his eyes to the ground, hoping to avoid direct eye contact with her (for she could read eyes like a children’s book), Mark sighed. “I’m just a little stressed out. There’s a lot going on.”
    Draping an arm over the teenage boy, Andria moved closer, moving her face closer to his. “If there’s anything you need, you know you can come to me.”
    Eyes closed and lips dried, Mark looked up into Andria’s eyes. It was the first time in his entire life where someone, besides his parents, looked at him with a sincerity that he saw here. It was almost as if her eyes were saying she loved him. He spoke quietly, his voice growing hoarse with a slight nervousness. “I don’t want to get you involved, Andria.”
    Slowly she began to take her arm away from his shoulder, but he reacted quickly, turning himself to face her more and placing his hands on her cheeks. His thumbs came to the edge of her lips; his fingertips seemed to gently caress her temple. “It’s dangerous. I don’t want anything happening to you.”
    Andria’s eyes seemed to tear up slightly, which is when it struck Mark that they were still in a classroom with other people. He quickly retracted his hands, feeling a bit embarrassed. Andria’s hand found his and squeezed it gently, showing him that she understood.
