    Modern Day Devils - Chapter 28
    By Snake - Mark

    Denis flew over the small town, his eyes scanning the ground for any transportation. Earlier in his search he had come across two cars in front of an abandoned building and upon his inspection, he found the vehicles to be missing their batteries. Assuming that the car batteries were being used as some sort of electricity source, Denis decided to search the abandoned home, hoping to find another band of survivors and the missing batteries. His search brought him to find the batteries were destroyed, scorched and melted down to their core; the survivors he had hoped to find were far from alive. Five bodies hung against a wall like decorations, the wall and their bodies impaled with long strips of piping that used to be part of the home. As he was leaving the abandoned building, he questioned why the attackers would go through the trouble of turning the people into wall art. Feeling disappointed at his findings, he took flight to continue his search.

    From overhead, the town looked to have been hit with several bombs. Buildings were in flames, no doubt caused from either human resistance or the hellfire of the demons; cars were overturned, some were in pieces while others were missing vital mechanical parts for operation. Denis felt he would never find the family he left behind temporarily a ride and so he began to plan out how Romeo and himself could safely move the mortals to their safe-house, which was only several blocks from their position so it seemed possible.

    Just as Denis was about to turn back to return to Romeo and the others, his mind snapped into a flashback. Back at the school, when everybody was waiting for Alyssa and Mark to return from clearing the roadway, Denis had been leaning up against something metal. At the time, he paid no attention to it, but now it grew to be a vital part of the current situation; and as he thought back upon it, he realized that all hope wasn’t lost.

    A black, four door, compact car, without a doubt large enough to transport the Freeleader family to safety, was awaiting Denis back at the high school. Now that he knew where he could find a ride, his mind now lay on the worry that the car was destroyed in some battle.

    Mark dropped down to the ground in a hurry, his sword positioned to strike as he crouched. In front of him was the town hall, the once white wall decorated in a thick coat of blood. Standing just in front of the main door was a horde of ten minions, all looking down upon a heap of fallen angels. Mark could sense their victory and grew all the more angry because of it.

    A short moment after Mark landed, Alyssa joined him. She immediately took notice to the minions and drew her shotgun at her side. When Alyssa joined Mark’s side, she came close to him and leaned in to whisper into his ear.

    “Can we take them alone?” Alyssa’s head nodded towards the
    Mark turned his head slightly. “Stay here.”

    “But wha-” Alyssa attempted to protest, but cut herself off when Mark moved away from her.

    Mark ignored Alyssa and stood up, lifting his sword above his head, the tip pointed towards the ground. As he stood there in this position, Mark’s hands began to glow a soft white. The white aura drifted from his hands, through his fingertips, and slowly surged its way through his sword. He turned his head to Alyssa and grinned slightly right before dropping to the ground, the tip of the blade being pushed through the concrete lot underneath Mark’s weight.

    The sound of Mark’s body hitting the ground reached the ears of the nearby minions. Their heads turned away from the dead angels they seemed to be watching and looked to Mark. They could see their enemy smiling; and immediately they could tell why.

    When the blade was dug into the ground up to the hilt, Mark released his grip and stood up. The sword’s handle started to quickly lose the white aura around it as the light seemed to flow down through the sword. As the light moved through the sword, the ground started to shake, causing the minions to move into a small state of panic. Mark stood tall with his arms crossed in front of him; the small quake didn’t affect him at all. A large smile crossed his lips as the quake faded underneath him and moved through the ground towards the minions, causing the shaking underneath them to grow more violent.

    The ground in front of the town hall shook violently underneath the feet of the minion group. Confused and in a panic, the minions did not move; they were frozen in fear, a fear which grew when the earth beneath them began to crack. As the ground split and cracked, beams of light shot out of the splits. The light beams struck several of the minions, causing them to cry out in a torturous pain as the holy light burnt and melted their demonic skin. The remainder of the minions tried to run, but were caught in the midst of the light geysers. The dying demons collapsed to the ground, the holy light eating away at their remains.

    When Mark saw the last of the minions fall, he grasped the handle of his blade and ripped it from the ground. Even after being dug into the earth, the silver of the sword still shined perfectly.

    “How did you…” Alyssa’s eyes were wide, and after seeing the light show Mark had just performed, her words came out slow.

    “We have the ability to control our own light.” Mark snapped his fingers, a minute flame sparking at the tip of each finger. “You’ll get the hang of it.”

    Mark approached the town hall slowly and as he came to the pile of dead demons, he let out a small sigh. “Guess I’d better clean up after myself.”

    Alyssa tilted her head, slightly confused at Mark. One moment he could be as serious as anything, and the next he will be cracking jokes. She felt somewhat sorry for him; unlike Mark, she never had to deal with what she was alone. She shook her head of her thoughts and went to join Mark.

    “We don’t want this place looking a fright when the guests arrive.” Alyssa spoke in a cheesy English accent.

    Mark laughed lightly and brushed his foot up against one of the minion’s corpse. “This kinda makes me hungry.”

    Alyssa laughed, not only at Mark’s humor, but at the fact that she enjoyed to see Mark cheerful. It gave her the feeling that something good would come out of this war for her when it ends.

    Denis dropped down next to the car that had waited for him at the high school. Without wasting any time, he pulled the door open and hopped in and immediately began searching for the keys. He ran his hand over the passenger seat and found there to be nothing but cloth underneath his fingers; reaching up, he pulled down the visor and nothing dropped down onto him. Denis dropped his head and searched the floor. When his eyes skimmed over the gas pedal, a slight glimmer hit the top of his eye. Looking up, he sighed to himself and shook his head.

    “Of-fucking-course.” Denis reached to the ignition and turned the key that was already in place.

    When the car engine started immediately, Denis congratulated himself and pressed his foot down on the gas, the back tires screeching before pushing the car into a quick acceleration.

    “So… how long have you and your family been down here?” Romeo sat down next to Yvonne Freeleader.

    Yvonne snapped out of the trance she had put herself in and looked to Romeo, a bit startled by his presence. “I don’t know. We don’t get any sunlight down here, so I…” Yvonne’s voice trailer off.

    Romeo nodded slowly. “Well, I’ll make sure you see the light of day sometime soon.”

    Yvonne’s eyebrows crinkled as she looked to Romeo. “Spare me the hero image. That body outside that door used to be my brother.” Yvonne turned away. “Nobody survives as a hero."

    Romeo looked at Yvonne in confusion. “What’re you…”

    “There’s somebody upstairs!” Tim Freeleader rose from his seat on the bottom step and looked up towards the top of the staircase.

    Romeo stood and neared Tim, his head turned to listen. “You sure?”

    “Possitive. I heard a bottle break.” Tim said. “I guess your friend’s back.”

    Romeo shook his head and took a step up the staircase. “I don’t think it’s him.”

    “How can you be sure?” Maria stepped up behind her husband.

    Romeo turned his head and glared down at Mrs. Freeleader. “Just trust me.” Romeo spoke softly.

    “But how can…” Maria went to speak, but was interrupted by the sound of moving furniture.

    “Shit!” Tim’s voice showed a bit of distress.

    Romeo turned and threw his hands out towards the family, who started to hesitantly move towards the back of the room. Clasping his hands into fists, his fingers tensed against the hardness of the handles of his daggers.

    “This just keeps getting better.” Romeo spoke to himself softly before stepping on the last step and readying himself to shoulder the door.

    Jared kept himself a good distance close to the bus, wary of the present danger that they were constantly in being in the open. Although he kept a close eye on the bus, his mind seemed to wander greatly. His concern for the other hybrids grew a great deal, but he wasn’t sure if it was just because he feared having to fight this war by himself, or if it was because he actually cared.

    Before everything started to go to hell, before he realized what he was, Jared had no concern for the lives of others. He knew it was selfish and even a bit cold hearted, but he still lived on thinking he was the only person he should worry about. Even when the mother of his neighbor, also a friend of the family, was side-swiped in her tiny Escort by a Guaranteed Overnight Delivery truck, Jared did nothing, nor felt anything, for his neighbor’s loss. Jared shook the memories from his head, refocusing his mind on the current issue.

    Growing tired of flying, Jared dropped down to the roof of the bus. With his left knee against the roof, he flattened his right foot just in front of his knee and draped his right arm over his right thigh. Jared sighed to himself as the wind blew around him and stared in the direction the bus was moving.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    John kept the bus moving at a steady 35 miles per hour to avoid ramming into any surprising obstacles. Route 25A, the busiest road in Rocky Point, was still as busy as it always was for a weekend. Rows of broken down and damaged cars littered the main road, causing the maneuverability of the bus to diminish greatly. John had yet to hit anything, though, and he only had another two miles before he reached the side street that would take him and the survivors to their shelter.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    As he neared his destination street, John slowed the bus down considerably before making the turn onto Broadway Boulevard. Turning the wheel and pressing down on the gas lightly, John felt the bus start to shake as it turned. John released the gas pedal and allowed the bus to roll into the turn, but still it shook again, this time more violently.

    “What the hell is that?” Henrietta took hold of John’s shoulder.

    John shook his head and pressed his foot back onto the gas pedal. The engine roared as the bus stopped completely, jerking the passengers forward. John released the gas once more and slammed his foot against it. The bus jerked forward but didn’t move after that.

    “I think we’re stuck on something.” John spoke softly as he stood up from his seat. “Take the wheel, hon.”

    Henrietta went to protest, but thought better of it and took her place in the driver’s seat as John moved towards the back of the bus.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The moment Jared felt that the bus had stopped moving, he stood and drew his weapons. Standing there silently with his short blades at his side, Jared felt the bus shake beneath him, almost causing him to lose his balance. With another shake of the bus, Jared fell backwards, the impact of his back against the metal roof causing him to release his grip upon his swords.
    Rolling over onto his stomach, Jared pushed himself off of the metal. As he shook off the brief moment of pain, a loud crack emitted from below the bus and reached his ears, causing him to immediately jerk to attention. Jared stayed still and listened for the next crack which was followed by several screams from inside the bus.
    Jared got to his feet and moved to the edge of the roof. Peering over the side, Jared found that the bus was no longer flat on the ground, but rather balanced out on a broken off piece of concrete that had been separated from the rest of the road.
    “What now…” Jared growled as the air was filled with a loud roar.
