    Modern Day Devils - Chapter 27
    By Snake - Mark

    Denis left the liquor store with caution, one pistol held in front of him, the other by his side. Romeo had stayed behind with the Freeleader family under the orders of Denis. If anything was to go wrong down there, they would need someone to get them out alive. The current plan was for him to find a working vehicle, return it to the liquor store, and then escort the Freeleader family back to the safe-house.

    Unfortunately for the Freeleaders, neither Romeo nor Denis told them who was alive, and where exactly the safe-house was, so they were expecting to be brought to a location that was mentioned briefly on the local radio before it went off the air. The last thing Denis heard before leaving was that the safe-house was a nearby hospital. Apparently the radio had stated that locals had gathered together with any kind of weaponry they could find and used the five story high hospital as a vantage point. Unlike the Freeleaders, Denis knew that the small human resistance did not hold out, for during his and Romeo’s scout, they came across the blood stained building. The resistance did nothing but supply the attacking armies with more soldiers.

    Denis shook his head and brought his mind back to the situation at hand. For a moment, when his eyes scanned the surrounding area, he thought he could hear the cheerful cries of little children, the humming engines of moving vehicles, and the usual gabber of shoppers. A feeling of sadness struck him, for he knew deep down inside that he would never hear those sounds again. Even if the war was won and the human race saved, Denis and all others of his kind would no longer be trusted by humanity.

    “We’ll serve our purpose,” Denis looked around the dead area once again, “and we’ll be exiled for it.”

    Denis shook the thought from his head and started to walk away from the liquor store, his wings spreading open behind him. His head was at the ground as he walked. Just as he did before he met up with Andria, Chris, and Jon, he felt alone.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The archangel Michael burst through the sky, causing a break in the light that covered a small area of the firmament. His wings spread open as he passed through the portal to the promised land, the white feathers making up his wings flapped lightly in the sudden breeze that struck him. As he started his slow decent down to solid ground, he listened around him for the sound of the remaining four archangels entering the earth’s atmosphere.
    The soft whirl of the portal opening struck Michael’s ear, and he nodded. The whirling sound repeated itself another three times, signifying the entrance of heaven’s generals into the promised land.
    Soaring down just above Michael was the archangel Gabriel. Gabriel had been bent on revenge against Lucifer and Satan since their turning on God. It was because of those two infidels that more than half of the angel army had been wiped out, including most of God’s most trusted archangels.
    Hovering down next to Gabriel was Uriel, an angel with the taste for war. Uriel had fought in the previous Angel Wars, as did every other angel and archangel, but it was Uriel who stood beside Michael as his blade struck down upon the Devil. Seeing the evil one vanquish under the power of Michael struck a love for war in Uriel.
    The remaining two archangels, Raphael and Camael normally stuck together. It was their teamwork during the Angel Wars that kept them alive, and ever since, they have stuck together in various situations.
    Michael lifted his head and looked above him. Michael entrusted his life in none other than the brotherhood of angels that soared down from the heavens above. Michael saw himself as the leader of the group, for it was he who brought an end to the previous large-scale war that heaven was engaged in. Michael loved the fact that his long-gone enemy had now returned to a place where their battle could be finished once and for all.
    Looking down below him, Michael tilted his head. A small figure moved on the ground below. Whatever it was seemed to be in a hurry for it ran fast. Directly behind it, two shapes moved around with the figures every move. Michael smiled to himself. Only a fool would be outside during this kind of situation; a fool, or somebody with a purpose. Michael’s eyes moved ahead of the running figure and came across another set of figures, five of them, unmoving in their spots. They too had objects attached to their backs, and in their hands they seemed to hold a weapon, a large sword.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Denis heard a soft hum over his head, and looking up, he came to find the sky had become shrouded in a white glow. Denis didn’t hesitate, for he knew only one thing that could emit a glow such as that one he had just seen. The portal to heaven had opened.

    He broke off into a run, his wings flapping slowly behind him as he prepared to take flight. As he dropped his head back down from staring into the sky, his eyes came to lie upon a group of minions, all seemingly staring down at something. As Denis grew closer to the group, their heads jerked up and looked in Denis’ direction. At sight of the hybrid, they all growled in unison. In reaction to their noticing him, Denis smirked and raised his handguns once again, aiming them in front of him. With a low grunt, he picked up speed and headed towards the group of demons at full speed.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Still falling slowly, Michael watched as the running figure moved faster, its arms leading its attack. As the archangel drew closer, he noticed the running figure had human-like traits, yet still bore two wings upon its back. Michael’s eyes grew wide as he lifted his to look up at the others.
    “Hybrid!” He called up to the other archangels, their wings immediately folding at the sound of the word, causing them to fall at a quicker pace.
    Michael’s wings folded up behind him as well. His right hand flashed during his decent, his fingers wrapping around the handle of a sword as it formed. They had just arrived, and already they would be battling.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Denis lifted his head as the sound of someone calling out struck his ears. He cursed when he saw that the angels were falling faster, and quickly dropped his attention back to the minions, who also were distracted by the falling angels.

    As Denis grew closer to the demons in front of him, his wings started to flap. The closer he became to the minions, the harder his wings flapped. From behind him, he heard several thuds as the angels hit the ground hard. He looked over his shoulder briefly to see that the hard drop did not slow them down, for they were already pursuing their target.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    “Archangels.” The leader of the five minions snarled, its eyes glowing with pleasure.
    The other four minions lifted their swords into the air and let out a terrible cry. The group’s commander swung its sword through the air and emitted a bellowing roar as it began to charge the oncoming hybrid, wishing to simply tear through the lone crossbred being and engage the angels.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Once the minions began their charge toward him, Denis pushed off of his leading leg and flapped his wings hard and repeatedly. He felt the ground fall away from his feet as he took flight. When he felt he had escaped the charging danger, he looked down to see the squad of minions collide with the attacking angels.

    “Time to find a ride.” Denis spoke to himself as he kept himself in the air and began his search for a working vehicle.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Michael became somewhat disappointed as he watched the hybrid take off and avoid the oncoming rush of demons; but his disappointment faded as the tip of his sword made contact with a diverted minion. When he felt the blade push into the beast’s skin, he stopped his running and hesitated for only a second before pushing his sword in deeper until the tip pushed through the demon’s back and hit fresh air once again.
    The rest of the herd of minions stopped dead in their tracks as the skewered demon let out a painful cry. Their eyes lay on their impaled leader in front of them for a moment; then their attentions turned to their enemies. One minion snarled and took a step forward, challenging the angels in front of it.
    “This fight will be short.” Michael spoke to his comrades as he pulled his blade from the commanding minion’s body, the steel noticeably scraping against bone as it exited the body. The body fell to the ground when the sword was removed and a large puddle of blood began to form underneath it almost immediately. “And then… the hybrid.”
    Camael let out a small laugh as he lifted his sword and pointed it towards the group of hellish beings. His eyes twinkled with delight as he awaited Michael’s command. As he waited, he looked over to find the other angels eyeing up their targets, their blades poised to strike at the command.
    Michael smirked and lowered his head. “Now.”
    There was complete silence following Michael’s command. The archangels moved quickly, not giving the minions any time to react or defend themselves. The blades of the angels cut through the demon skin smoothly, ending the minor battle before the enemy had a chance to participate.
    Michael nodded to his comrades as they stood over their kill. “Good. At least you haven’t lost your speed like they have.”
    Every archangel was gifted with speed. God did not wish his highest soldiers to be cursed with a worry of time or to be hindered in battle, and so he granted them “lightest feathers”, as the Almighty had called it. The ability enabled the archangels to move at a speed impossible to man without the use of a vehicle.
    “Sir, do we pursue the hybrid?” Uriel stepped away from the dead minion at his feet and approached Michael.
    Michael nodded slowly. “We’ll follow him. He’ll lead us to the others.” Michael had pushed aside the fact that the Lord of Hell was roaming the Promised Land. He wished the hybrids to die by his hands.
