    In Michael Crichton's JP novel, the ages of the children are reversed: the boy is older, while the girl is younger. Spielberg reportedly flipped the ages of the kids so Joseph Mazello could play Tim.

    Modern Day Devils - Chapter 18
    By Snake - Mark

    Jon threw down the ten dollars he owed for his dinner in the middle of the table along with the rest of the tab. Before leaving the dining area, he took a good look around him, taking notice to how crowded the diner had gotten since they had arrived. Every table surrounding where him and his accomplices were sitting was occupied by small families and young couples. Everybody seemed so happy, and Jon did his best to remember what it felt like to be happy with someone.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Bethany ran up to him, wrapping her arms around Jon tight and planting a long, passionate kiss against his lips. Her hug was almost like that of a bears, for the last time she had seen her love was two months ago before he left to live with his mother in Rocky Point.
    “I’ve missed you baby.” Bethany’s voice was soft, and had a hint of sadness in it.
    “I’ve missed you too.” Jon kissed Bethany’s nose softly.
    Bethany’s voice cracked a bit when she spoke again. “When are you coming back to Montana?”
    “I don’t think anytime soon, Bethany… I can’t move off the island until I’m out of high school.”
    “That’s two fucking years, Jon! I can’t do these quick, once a year visits anymore.” Bethany’s eyes started to water, tears streaming down her cheeks.
    “I know Bethy… but I can’t just run away. I’ve got a life here that I can’t, and don’t want to, just up and get away from.”
    Bethany pushed herself away from Jon, her hands rubbing at her eyes to clear the tears. Her expression, which had been joyous when she saw Jon, had now changed to regret.
    “Jon, I can’t do this anymore…”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Jon tried to shake the memory from his head, those final five words being the greatest pain he’d ever felt in his body. When his head was cleared once again of his passed love, Jon shook his head slightly and closed his eyes slowly.

    “If only you people knew there was nothing left to be happy about.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    David leaned himself against the handicap ramp railing, picking his teeth with a mint flavored toothpick that he had taken at the diner’s main counter. Every few seconds, he would flick the end of the toothpick to remove any food that had come from between his teeth off of the wooden point. As he let out a slight yawn, David lifted his head to glance at Denis, who seemed frozen where he was standing.
    “Are you all right there Denis?” David called out, pushing himself off of the railing.
    “Something is near…” Denis’ voice was calm, but his facial expression was one of worry. With his head lifted into the air, Denis took in a deep breath through his nose. “The both of you…get inside.”
    Andria’s and David’s eyebrows quirked upward slightly, and just as David was about to question Denis, Denis snapped his head towards him. “NOW!”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    As Jon pulled open the door to leave the diner, Andria and David rushed towards him, forcing him back into the lobby.

    “What’s going on?” Jon questioned, a bit disappointed that they are staying.

    “Denis thinks something is coming.” David turned back towards the glass door, watching Denis stand perfectly still.

    “And I think that’s reason enough to stay inside.” Andria snorted slightly.

    “Yeah, I agree there.” Jon nodded to Andria, smiling slightly.

    “Hey guys, check this out.” David was waving Jon and Andria towards the door frantically, and when they were beside him, he pointed to Denis.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Denis brought his hands down to his hips and cracked each finger slowly, one at a time. He could feel something tighten around his mind and his heart, almost as if trying to suffocate him of his life. This feeling had never coursed through his body before, but he knew it was the sign that something was close by. A twisted smile cam across his lips and he clenched his fists around to hard objects that weren’t at his side just seconds before.
    Denis twisted his neck slightly, cracking it, as his arms began to rise up from his side to become outstretched in front of him. There was a slight bit of weight added to each arm, as his hands now gripped firmly to the handles of two nine millimeter hand-guns.
    Denis eyed the guns slowly, taking in the details of each nine millimeter. The butt of each handle ended in what looked like the handle of a small dagger, which when pulled on revealed two small silver blades. A smile crossed Denis’ lips as he twirled the guns in his hands and noticed there was no place for a clip, giving him the idea that more than bullets fired from these pistols.
    Before Denis could finish admiring his new weaponry, the sound of screeching tires and breaking glass echoed in his ears.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Route 25A traffic had been moving rather well throughout the fading evening, that is before some irresponsible owner let his dog run off into the middle of the road. Luckily enough for the dog, nobody in the oncoming traffic was in too much of a hurry to stop themselves.

    “What fucking moron walks a dog when it’s dark out along a main road?” Hemphry Teesel slouched back in the driver seat of his car, slapping his hand against his forhead.

    Teesel was driving alone, coming home from a long comforting session with Becky Bloofery. Even after the rumors had started in school, the illegal couple had still continued to see each other, despite the threats made towards Teesel from his spouse. This current traffic jam was going to give Jessica Teesel reason to be suspicious of Hemprhy, for the later and later he was the more and more she knew he was with that “teenage slut”.

    Being one car length away from the traffic obstruction, Teesel couldn’t see the animal clearly, but that didn’t stop him from not wondering if the canine was injured; he also never questioned why nobody in the second unobstructed lane was moving. Instead, he just sat in his car and honked his horn repeatedly, yelling at both the drivers in front of him and the dog to move.

    “If yer not goin’ to go around him, run the fucker over!” He yelled through his windshield, never stopping to realize that nobody but himself could hear his angry shouts.

    Finally, after his impatience reached an all new level and his horn started to become weaker than his angry tone, Teesel exited his car in a huff. With a pissed off walk, and a peace of his mind ready to be given, Teesel stomped his way to the car in front of him.

    “Hey schmuck, you mind getting a move on?” Hemphry slapped his hand against the driver’s side, backseat window.

    When neither the driver nor the passenger moved, Teesel pounded his hand against the driver’s window and came to stand face to face with driver.

    “Fuck face, drive around the fucking…” Teesel’s words trailed off as his eyes came to meet two gaping holes in the drivers head.

    Both the driver’s and passenger’s eyes were missing and their faces covered in their own blood. Neither the driver nor the passenger moved or gave any other sign of life as Teesel stood terrified, gazing at the two corpses in the vehicle. When he finally was able to move, Hemphry peered into the backseat of the car and found something that wasn’t there before.

    Two red eyes peered up at him, attached to those eyes was what could pass for the product of turning a full grown pitbull inside out. The red body of the dog was covered in blood rather than hair; the left ear was torn at the tip while the right was missing two inches off of the top; and the mouth held in it a collection of razor sharp, jagged teeth. The helldog’s rear legs tensed and bent at the knee as its forelimbs spread away from each other slightly and outstretched against thin air. It was at that moment that Teesel realized the dog was nowhere near touching the seat, but rather standing on some invisible plain in the car.

    Teesel jumped back from the car as the demon-dog inside snarled and lunged at him. Having to stifle a small bit of laughter for the dog’s idiocy for thinking it could jump through the car, Teesel moved back up to the rear driver side window slowly. The joy quickly faded from the teacher as his eyes never came across the dog, but instead found themselves looking into an empty back seat. Fear was distilled once again into the teacher, and that fear turned to pure horror when the recently heard low growl grew from behind him.

    Turning slowly, Teesel swallowed hard; closed his eyes; and wiped a few beads of sweat off of his forehead. When his eyes opened, they met those of the angry pooch that had apparently jumped through the car. Teesel backed himself up slowly until his back hit the car he had recently examined.

    The hellhound turned its head in the direction of the small traffic jam and barked once, then turned its attention back to its prey. Teesel very slowly turned his head to where the dog barked, and found that his preoccupation with the dog had caused him to miss an entire ambush on those stuck in the middle of 25A. The last sounds Teesel heard before the hellhound lunged at him were the sounds of resisting victims, screeching tires, and breaking glass.
