The Hunt for the Black Widow
    Chapter 6: Residence Cascade

    Swamp Cruiser

Captain Dac walked up the stairs, onto the deck. A cool breeze swept around him; today there might be enough wind for them to depart. The sun’s rays of light were only beginning to cast over the horizon. He would have to wake the cook, to make breakfast.

Dac turned and went down the stairs. He soon reached the cook’s room. It was conveniently located right next to the kitchen, so the cook could start working on breakfast without having to travel to the other end of the boat.

Dac knocked on the door. He thought he heard an answer. Dac put his ear up to the door, and knocked again. The noise came again. The cook was snoring. Dac turned the doorknob. It was locked.

Dac reached into his pocket, retrieving a key ring. He found the correct key, and inserted it into the doorknob. Dac opened the door and looked over to the bed.

Dac frowned, confused. The bed was empty. Out of the corner of his eye Dac saw the glint of a knife.

“Hello, there, Captain Dac!” a voice said from behind him.

    Dac shuddered, frightened.

“What do you want?” Dac asked, raising his hands into the air.

“What’re you talking about? I just said hello,” the voice said.

Dac turned, and jumped back. Standing in front of him was the cook, FordPrefect, holding a knife in his hand. Dac backed against the wall.

“Don’t kill me!” Dac said, glaring at Ford.

    “What…?” Ford was confused.

    “The knife,” Dac said.

“Oh, I was just cutting up some potatoes for dinner tonight. Steak and French-fries!” Ford smiled.

Dac let out a sigh of relief.

“I thought you were going to kill me,” Dac laughed.

    “Nah,” Ford laughed, too.

“So, what will you be making for breakfast?”

    Beautiful Dandelion

The sun rose on the horizon. Martin Randle stood at the helm, completely clueless as to where he was taking them. The boat was heading for an island, where Martin was hoping they would find a captain to take them back to America, so he could fly back home.

“How much longer until we reach the island?” Yvonne asked, waking up. JPJunkee and Jpfan4life were also on there, both still sleeping. Edgar and Ben were below, with the captured marines.

“Maybe twenty, thirty minutes,” Martin estimated.

“Ok, good,” Yvonne yawned, falling back to sleep.

Yesterday had been quite a busy day. Everyone was tired. Especially Martin. After he finished capturing the marines, he was sent to the helm, to try and get them to land. He was the only one who could steer the boat at all, although he wasn’t very good at it. And he was at the helm since then, with no sleep.

Bang! A gunshot rang out, shattering the silence. Martin looked back to see a ship approaching from behind.

“Houston, we have a problem,” Mithrandir, the Furby, said.

The others began to wake up. The boat drew closer, and Martin guessed that it was a warship.

“Stop you vessel, this is the Cuban Navy!” a voice shouted from the warship.

    “What’s happening?” Jpfan asked.

“I have no idea,” Martin replied.

    Warrior

General Carna grinned in delight. The boat wasn’t stopping, meaning that he might be able to take it with force.

“I said ‘Stop you vessel’!” Carna shouted.

“We don’t know how!” a young woman shouted from the other boat.

“What do you mean you don’t know?” Carna asked, confused.

“Our captain… uh, died. One of us knows how to steer the boat, but that’s all we can do!”

“You lie!” Carna snarled, pretending to be angry.

“No, I don’t,” the woman shouted back.

“We will have to seize your boat,” Carna said.

There was no answer. Carna grinned.

    “Increase speed.”

    Beautiful Dandelion

Martin Randle looked over his shoulder to see that the Cuban warship was speeding up. It would be pulling up next to their ship soon.

“Is there anything we can do?” Junkee asked.

“I don’t think we should try to put up a fight,” Yvonne said.

“Why? We have those marines. They’ll help us,” Jpfan4life said.

Martin looked back at the warship. Even if they were able to get the marines up here in time, they were severely outnumbered. But the warship would be lined up next to their cruise boat in less than a minute now.

“They might let us live if we don’t fight back,” Martin said.

“Then… what will the do with us?” Jpfan asked.

    Black Widow

PFCGentry stood on the deck, looking out across the ocean. Hunter walked up next to him, chewing on a jawbreaker.

“Any sign of the Cubans?” Hunter asked.

“No, we haven’t seen them on radar for a while now,” Gentry replied.

“Hmm… want a jawbreaker?” Hunter said, reaching into his pocket for a bag of jawbreakers.

“Uh… what are they?” Gentry asked.

“Like gum, but harder. Don’t try to chew on them,” Hunter said.

    “Sure, I’ll try one.”

Hunter handed him one of the jawbreakers in the bag. As he held it in his hand, it changed from purple to blue.

“Are they supposed to do that?” Gentry said, taking the jawbreaker.

“I guess they’re colour changing or something,” Hunter shrugged. “Spino said something about the purple ones, but I don’t remember what.”

“Hmm… ok,” Gentry said, putting the candy into his mouth.

“So, will we be in safe waters soon?” Hunter asked.

“Yeah, I think so. Kevy said it would be another day or so,” Gentry answered.

“Ok. Well, I’m going to clean the weapons. You want to help?”

“Sure,” Gentry said, following Hunter down below deck.

    Swamp Cruiser

While the rest of the crew ate in the cafeteria, the captain, cook, and guests ate in a separate room. Ford had decided to cook waffles, sausage, bacon, and eggs this morning.

“So, we’ll be able to leave today?” Rick asked, pouring syrup onto his waffle.

“Yes, if the wind keeps up. And it looks like it will. We should get quite far today,” Dac confirmed.

    “Good,” Rick said.

“What exactly are we looking for, again?” Dac asked.

“The Black Widow. It’s a ship that the Cuban Navy is trying to take down. It’s our job to protect it,” Rick explained.

“Ah, ok. Do you have any idea of where it is?”

“Not really. If left Cuba several days ago, and should be heading north,” Rick said.

“What about the nifty device Dan gave us before we left?” Dark Hunter asked.

“Oh! I forgot about that,” Rick said. “Our superior gave us a device to track the ship down. The ship we’re looking for has a tag on it, and the device can show us where the ship is.”

“Ok, that will help a lot,” Dac nodded. “Where is it?”

“It’s in my room right now; I’ll get it after breakfast,” Rick said.

“Ok. Sounds good,” Dac said, drinking from a glass of orange juice.

Life Raft of the Beautiful Dandelion

After boarding the ship, the Cubans decided to give the passengers a life raft and leave them in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. Which is where they all sat, now. It was quite crowded, with the four tourists, seven marines, Edgar, and Ben. The Cubans also took all of their weapons, except Martin’s crowbar.

The island was still in sight, and they were currently paddling towards it. It would be another hour or two until they reached it. Hopefully there would be an airport there, and some food.

    “Shark!” Jpfan screamed.

The infamous shark fin circled around the raft. Everyone immediately moved towards the center of the boat.

“What are we going to do?” Yvonne asked.

“We could try to make it to the island before it eats us,” Stunt Driver suggested.

“Yeah, but then we’d have to put our hands in the water, and hope the shark doesn’t bite us,” Junkee said.

“Hmm… Maybe we could scare the shark away,” Aragorn said.

“How do we do that?” Jpfan asked.

“Um… Martin, you have that crowbar, right?”

“Aye, but I’m tired right now. I can’t kill it,” Martin said.

“Then give the crowbar to me,” Aragorn said.

    ************************************************************************

    Swamp Cruiser

Rick Arnold walked into his room. He quickly found the device that Dan had given them. Rick began walking out of the room. Captain Dac was up on deck.

“Rick Arnold… we have returned… for you…” a deep voice bellowed.

Rick stopped. A shiver went up his spine, and his eyes widened. He had heard this voice before, at an incident we didn’t wish to remember. Silver Mesa. Maybe he was just having a flashback, though.

“Rick, did you just hear something a few minutes ago?” Camel asked, coming into the room.

    ************************************************************************

    Life Raft

Aragorn sat at the edge of the raft, prepared to stab the shark with crowbar the next time it passed by.

“Aragorn, be careful,” Hockey Dude warned.

Aragorn nodded, and then resumed staring into the water in front of him. He looked to the right. The shark was approaching. Aragorn readied the crowbar, positioning it perfectly. The shark was almost in front of him now—

SWISH! The crowbar plunged into the shark’s body. The shark began thrashing around wildly. Aragorn struggled to pull the crowbar out of the shark.

SPLASH! Aragorn fell over the side of the raft, into the water. The shark continued to thrash around. Aragorn finally managed to remove the crowbar from the shark’s body. He fumbled with the crowbar for a few seconds before getting it into his hand.

The shark charged towards Aragorn, leaving a bloody cloud behind it. Aragorn raised the crowbar and smashed it over the shark’s head, leaving it momentarily stunned. Aragorn surfaced for air. He felt something crash into his leg. Aragorn dived back down to see the shark charging forward to ram into his leg again.

Aragorn kicked the shark in the head this time, stunning the shark again. He raised the crowbar again and plunged it into the shark’s head, killing it instantly. Aragorn pulled the crowbar out and swam for the surface, again.

    ************************************************************************

    Swamp Cruiser

Rick paced around the room, explaining to Mr. Camel what was going to happen.

“It’s what caused the mess at Silver Mesa. We’re going to have a residence cascade—“

    “A residence cascade?” Camel asked.

“Yes, at least, that’s what one of the scientists told me,” Rick said.

“I see,” said Mr. Camel. “Go on.”

“Well, then we’ll have a bunch of aliens teleport here, and… we’re going to die. Unless we can kill them all,” Rick said.

“We must warn the other, so we’re prepared,” Camel said.

“Yes, we must,” said Rick, leaving the room. Camel followed him.

    ************************************************************************

    Life Raft

Hockey Dude and Majestic pulled Aragorn back into the raft. He coughed up some water. The crowbar in his hand was covered with blood and shark brains.

“Good job, Aragorn,” Dino Dude said.

“Thanks,” Aragorn coughed again. “Now let’s get moving. I’m hungry.”

“You can eat the shark brains,” Nick Zravre laughed.

    “Why don’t you?”

“Um…” Nick frowned. “I’m… not hungry.”

“I didn’t think so,” Aragorn grinned.

    ************************************************************************

    Swamp Cruiser

Rick Arnold and Mr. Camel ran up on deck.

    CRACK!

“The residence cascade!” Rick shouted. “That’s the residence cascade!”

    “What was that?” Dac asked.

    “Weren’t you listening?” Camel asked.

    “No…”

“One word: Residence cascade,” Rick said.

    “That’s two words,” Camel said.

    “Shut up.”

“What is this… residence cascade?” Dac asked.

“I don’t know, but it happened last time, too!”

    “Last time?” Dac asked, confused.

“Captain, I don’t have time to explain this. The aliens are coming, and we need to get ready,” Rick said, loading a 12 gauge shotgun.

“Aliens? And where’d you get that shotgun? We don’t have any of those on the boat,” Dac said, totally confused.

“Yes, aliens. And this is a Franchi SPAS-12 semiautomatic shotgun. What weapons do we have on the boat?” Rick asked.

    Crack!

“We have a few automatic rifles, two sniper rifles, a rocket launcher, a few crates of grenades, and a lot of handguns,” Dac said.

“Get them on deck, we’ll need as many guns as we can get,” Rick ordered.

    ************************************************************************

    Life Raft

The island was only about fifty yards away, now. Fortunately, there was a strong gust of wind that pushed them forward.

All that was visible from the raft was a beach, and beyond that was a jungle. There was no sign of life on the island at all.

    ************************************************************************

    Swamp Cruiser

The crates of weapons were up on deck, now. CRACK!

“Everyone get a weapon, now!” Rick ordered.

Captain Dac approached Rick, with an AK-47 in his hands.

“Mr. Arnold, what is going on here?” Dac asked.

“Captain, a few years ago I worked in one of those high-tech research facilities out in the southwest deserts. We were conducting an experiment, and it went horribly wrong. We created a bridge between an alien world and us. The aliens infiltrated the facility; killing everyone they saw. We must be prepared for these aliens,” Rick explained.

“Hey, Rick! Everyone is armed,” Dark Hunter reported.

Click, click Rick Arnold finished loading the shotgun. “Oh, yeah!”

    CRACK!

    ************************************************************************

    The Island

The life raft finally touched the sandy beach. Everyone jumped out of the raft and onto the sand.

Everyone rejoiced as their feet touched dry land for the first time in days.

“Well, let’s start looking for something to eat,” Aragorn said.

    “Yeah,” Nick agreed.

“I thought you weren’t hungry,” Jpfan said.

“Look! I hear music!” Hockey Dude exclaimed.

Everyone began to run towards the sound. They arrived in a small village.

“Woah! Who are you people?” one of the villagers asked.

“We were on a cruise, but then the Cuban Navy took our boat. We floated here on a raft,” Junkee explained.

“Oh, well, I’m Carnotaur3! I’m own one of the best restaurants in town!” the man exclaimed.

“You… you do?” Aragorn asked, his mouth watering.

“Yeah. You guys must be hungry, follow me!” Carnotaur3 said, leading them towards his restaurant.

    ************************************************************************

    Black Widow

“Captain, the Cuban ship has appeared on radar,” Gentry said.

“Yar, how far away is it, lad?” Captain Darial Longsword asked.

“Quite far. Even if it went straight towards us at top speed, it wouldn’t get here until late this afternoon,” Gentry explained.

“I see. Alert Spino—err… Guilty Spark at once. Tell him to get start getting the cannons ready,” Longsword instructed.

“Aye, Captain,” Gentry nodded, leaving the room, with Hunter following behind him.

    ************************************************************************

    The Island

The group sat in the restaurant, noisily gobbling down their sandwiches.

“So, where are you people going next?” Carnotaur3 asked.

“Is there an airport here?” Martin asked.

“No, no airport. Sorry,” Carnotaur3 said.

“Is there any way out of here?” Junkee asked.

“Yes, we have a captain here, he will take you to where you need to go, but it will require payment. Especially if you don’t have your own boat,” Carnotaur3 said.

    “How much?” Yvonne asked.

“Well, seeing as how you don’t have a boat anymore, it would be about five-hundred dollars a person,” Carnotaur3 explained.

“That’s $6500 for thirteen people!” Jpfan said.

“Is there any other way off of the island?” Aragorn asked.

“No, I’m afraid not. Unless you want to swim, but these are shark-infested waters. You wouldn’t make it,” Carnotaur3 said.

“Edgar will pay for it,” Ben said.

“What? No I won’t!” Edgar said.

“Edgar, you have to get these people back home, or you might get in serious trouble,” Ben said.

    “Fine…” Edgar sighed.

“So, where is this guy?” Yvonne asked.

    “I’ll show you,” Carnotaur3 said.

    ************************************************************************

    Swamp Cruiser

CRACK! The sound was getting louder every minute. It wouldn’t be long until the aliens came.

ZAP! A cloud of green gas suddenly appeared over the ship, and it swirled at supersonic speed.

    “What is that?” RaptorMonkey asked.

    “They’re coming,” Rick said grimly.

    ************************************************************************

    The Island

Carnotaur3 led Martin, Aragorn, Yvonne, Edgar, and Ben to the captain. The rest had stayed in the restaurant to eat.

They stopped at a small building. The sign read:

    Captain Host
Sailing you from coast to coast!

A small sign in the window read ‘Back in 5 Minutes!’

“Hmm… he should be back by now,” Carnotaur3 said, knocking on the door.

“But we only waited thirty seconds…” Yvonne said.

“Yeah, but the sign has been up for an hour,” Carnotaur3 explained.

The door opened. A man with blond hair stood there. He had an eye patch over his right eye. The man wore an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt and a pair of shorts. A can of Pepsi was in his hand.

“Hey, Carno! What’s up?” the man asked.

“I have a few customers for you,” Carno said.

“Ah, well, I’ll be back in five minutes. Can’t you read signs?” the man laughed.

“What are you doing that’s so important?” Carno grinned.

“Eating and watching TV,” the man replied.

“Is that more important than $6500?” Carno asked.

Pepsi sprayed from the man’s mouth.

    “WHAT?”

“They have thirteen people who need to get to the States. And they lost their boat to the Cuban Navy,” Carno explained.

The man walked back inside and removed the sign from the window. He reappeared in the doorway a few seconds later.

“Well, people, I’m Captain Host, and I’ll take you from coast to coast!”

“Are you the same Host that was at that Dinosaur Land thing a few years ago?” Yvonne asked.

“Yeah, I was. Broke my leg there. But I got better! You’re… Yvonne, right? And Martin Randle?” Host asked.

“Yup, that’s us. I thought you were a mathematician or something,” Yvonne said.

“Yeah, well, I got bored and decided this would be more fun,” Host grinned.

    “Interesting…” Martin remarked.

“Yeah. So, where are the rest of the people?” Host asked.

“Back at my restaurant, eating,” Carno said.

“Ah, ok. Hey, Carno, you want to come along, too? You make good food,” Host said.

“I would, but I don’t have the money right now,” Carno said.

“Nah, don’t worry. It’s free! You just have to cook for us,” Host smiled.

“Well, sure, I guess I can come. Amber can always take care of the restaurant for me. Sure I’ll come along!” Carno said.

“Good. So, when do you guys want to leave?” Host asked.
