    EIGHTH STAGE
"Never look into the mirror to see who you are.
In the mirror there is only your vision of yourself.
Look to others, they are the only ones who know
who you truly are. Your opinion on yourself is
deluded at best, and only mirrors a fantasy."
    --Kyle Warner--

    CHAPTER 36

Lewis Dodgson sighed as he looked over his body. He smiled when he saw that only two bullets had actually hit him. One in his right calf and one in his left shoulder.
    Grant was a bad shot!
Killing Wu made him feel good. He had wanted to kill Grant and the others as well, but his time had been short. Dodgson reloaded his gun, and limped to the door of the office.
He reached for the door knob, but stopped when he heard a snarl from down the hall. He stood absolutely still.

In the hall, the raptors began to walk away from the stairs, where the humans had just escaped. Walking down those same stairs, they were dragging Wu's body with them.
As they walked down the stairs, another raptor walked up, towards them. This raptor was larger than the others and was colored differently. It was a G2 raptor. The other raptors growled at the G2. But the G2 ignored them and slowly walked up the stairs.
It began walking the hall, slowly and casually.
Dodgson looked out through the office doors bullet-hole-filled door. He saw the raptor walk past his door, and was able to see the animal’s white blinded eye.
Dodgson breathed a sigh of relief, it hadn’t noticed him. Then, with unfathomable speed, the raptor's head jerked up and it ran to Dodgson's door.
Dosdgson was frozen in fear. He could see the creature's white doll-like eyes staring through the bullet holes. It had heard him sigh!
The raptor knelt down and began to lick the door. It ran from the top to the bottom, until its tongue went through one of the bullet holes.
Dodgson's face turned white when the tongue flicked through the door, directly above his extended hand. Dodgson held his breath, as he quickly brought his hand back.
Instantly, the tongue went rigid. It had felt the air that his hand had stirred up. Slowly, the tongue slipped out of the hole that the bullet had made. And then, all was quiet.
Dodgson stood still for a moment, and closed his eyes.
With a scream, the head broke through the door and lunged for Dodgson.
Dodgson screamed as he fell backwards. He fired his gun once, hitting the raptor in the neck, and the head disappeared.
    It was quiet again.
Then all in one single motion, the door broke in and the raptor jumped through, landing on Dodgson. He screamed when he felt the weight of the dinosaur land on him.
The big head came down on his shoulder, and he screamed in horrible agony. Then, he pressed the pistol up against the raptor’s chest, and unloaded a few rounds.
The raptor snarled, and bit onto the hand with the gun.
Dodgson screamed in unbearable pain, and shot the gun's last few bullets. The hot metal rang through the raptor’s big skull, splattering brains against the wall.
Dodgson clutched his injured hand, and pushed the raptor off his body. He looked down at the dead creature, and spat bloody saliva down onto its blown away skull.
Dodgson went back to the desk in the office, and pulled open a drawer. Inside, he grabbed a silver Desert Eagle Magnum.
He looked closely at the big pistol, then turned it on himself. He winced as he pressed the gun up to his temple. The pain in his body was like nothing he had ever felt. It was terrible. His skin was ravaged, and he had multiple bullet wounds all about his body. It was time . . . . he was finished. There was nothing left to live for now. His dream, his career, his life --- it was all over. He let out a long sigh, as he thought about what kind of hell he would soon witness.
Then slowly, his mind drifted to Grant, Malcolm, and the others. Wu hadn't been alone. The others were equally guilty for what had happened. They would pay with their lives. Dodgson tucked away the gun, and walked out of the room.

    CHAPTER 37

Grant looked all around him. To his left, was the main compound. To his right, were the open cages of all the big animals. And straight ahead, was a war zone.
He watched, in both amazement and horror, as a pack of allosaurs attacked a group of humans. The humans attempted to hold the beasts back with firepower. But it all seemed to be futile. Grant saw an allosaur grab a man around the waist, then hurl him into the electric fence, the scene was grotesque, but he couldn't take his eyes away.
Slowly, one of the allosaurs began to break away from the others. It was acting very confused. And it was only just then, that Grant realized what it was doing. It was tricking them. While acting confused, it slowly made its way over to them. They needed to go, right now!
"Come on!" Alan yelled to the others, and quickly led them to the rows, upon rows, of cages. The border collie followed them, barking all the way.
The lone allosaur turned and roared at them. It gave chase for a moment, then stopped at the cages. It wouldn't go any further. It shook its head disappointingly, and walked off.
Grant, Malcolm, Leah and the others walked slowly amongst the empty cages. The cage doors were opened. Sometimes, dead dinosaur bodies lay in the cages, obviously slain by other creatures.
Thankfully though, it was quiet here. And from the way the allosaur acted, they must have not liked to visit their old homes. The dog moved close to Grant, it was using him as a shield of sorts.
Brunell sighed, and knelt down, "Okay, wait a minute here. Let's check our ammo."
Harris opened his guns chamber, "Five bullets."
Malcolm opened his guns clip, "Eight."
Madison looked at the clip of his machine gun, "Twelve."
Grant looked at his gun, "Two."
"And I've got two shotgun shells," Brunell said, "This isn't enough to waste all those things we saw attacking out there."
"What do we do then?" Madison asked.
Brunell looked to Grant, "You're the leader."
    Grant shook his head slowly, "I don't know. . . ."
"Well, whatever we do," Harris said, "We better do it ---"
From behind, the red and black horned head of the carnotaurus, came down around Harris' head and neck, throwing him into the air. Harris screamed, as he felt all the dagger-like teeth puncture through his skin.
Harris' body came crashing back down in a heap. The carnotaurus slowly stepped up to the body, ignoring the other humans. Its drool sagging to the ground.
"Kill it!" Leah screamed in horror. The dog hurried behind Grant, and barked repetitively at the carnotaur.
That's when the carnotaurus froze. Its head snapped up to listen, but other than that, it was a statue.
Madison leaned into Grant, "What's it doing?"
Grant watched the dinosaur intently. They could easily kill it with the firepower they had. But, he felt that this dinosaur wasn't the real danger. The dog too, had become utterly silent. "We need to go," Grant whispered.
    Malcolm asked, "What about Harris?"
    "Run!" Grant yelled.
With that, the giant behemoth known as the tyrannosaurus rex came crashing through the cages. It seized the carnotaur around the neck, and drove its skull to the ground. Placing its wide and heavy foot on the carntaur's spine, it began to gnaw on the throat.
When it was satisfied with the carnotaurus’ painful death, it turned to see the smaller humans fleeing. The rex bellowed and gave pursuit.

They raced through the cages, looking for a way out of the confining area. They rounded a corner and suddenly, they were out.
And back to where they saw the allosaurs attacking the guards. Leah screamed when she saw the dozens of ravaged human bodies laying about the ground. The dog whimpered and ran up to Leah for comfort.
What scared Grant though, was the fact that the allosaurs were gone. They could have given the rex some trouble, and given them some time. Where had they gone? Did the rex scare them off?
His thoughts were interrupted, when the rex roared behind them, and dashed through the cages, racing towards them.
Malcolm moaned, "Oh, this is not good."
Then, they were running again. Every now and then, they attempted to turn and fire upon the rex. But all their shots seemed to have little or no effect.
They ran over and/or around the dead guards. Leah tripped on one of the guards legs, and fell down. Grant turned back, and despite the approaching rex, grabbed Leah by the arm and pulled her to her feet. Leah was scared to death, but she continued to run, with Grant at her side, pulling her faster than she could really run. She tripped one more time, before she forced herself to keep up.
The rex ignored the dead guards all together, and continued to chase Grant and the others, especially the two humans who kept slowing down.
    "Scavenger, my ass!" Grant growled.
They ran past the guards, and were now making there way towards the compound.
"The gate's that way!" Madison yelled and pointed to a fence to their right.
Grant looked back at the rex. It was too close. "No, to the compound, there's shelter there!"
They ran full tilt towards the compound door. Until, a massive shadow fell over the door, and a enormous leviathan walked in front of the door. The animal stood there, looking down at them. Its eyes were red, and looked like they had actually come from hell. Then, the animal looked up at the running rex.
The rex stopped running, and looked closely at its new foe. The rex looked confused and tilted its head to the side. Its breath was slow, and a hint of a growl escaped every time.
Grant and the others stood between the two giant dinosaurs. The dog was huddled between Malcolm's legs. Grant looked at the new animal, and slowly began to make out what it was.
It stood on two hind legs. Had a long muscular tail, and had two very large front arms, each with two fingers. Its head was . . . that of a rexes. It was a G2 rex! It was mutated, and its arms had grown. Grant looked back to the normal rex, and realized its confusion. The rex was seeing itself. They were both the same animal.
The normal rex lowered its head, and straightened its tail. Grant had been around these animals long enough to know what that meant. Grant whispered to everyone, "Slowly, walk towards the gate."
Ever so slowly, they began to creep as a group, away from the two dinosaurs. Grant let go of Leah’s hand. Now that she was on her own for a second, she sighed in fear as she looked at the two giants.
The rexes paid no attention to the humans anymore, though. They were too busy with themselves.
The G2 stepped towards the normal rex, but the normal rex jumped backwards. It was confused and unsure about this new animal. It was not going to take any chances.
The G2 stepped closer again. This time the normal rex emitted a soft growl, and chomped its jaws.
Grant watched this all in amazement and fear. A fight was inevitable, and he didn't want to be here when it happened. He looked back to the group, "On the count of three, I want us all to run like mad to the gate."
    Everyone nodded.
    "One."
The G2 waved its arms in aggravation, and stepped closer to the normal rex again.
    "Two."
The normal rex stepped back, and stomped its foot on the ground. It roared in defiance.
"Three!" The humans ran like hell to the gate.
The G2 had had enough, it acted like it was stepping forward, but faked and swung its tail around, hitting the normal rex in the shoulder. The rex roared and latched its mouth onto the G2's tail. The G2 wailed, and kicked dirt up into the rex's eyes.
The rex stumbled back, then regained its focus and charged the G2. The normal rex struck the G2 in the chest with the crown of its head. The wind knocked out of it, the G2 fell to the ground.
The normal rex looked down at the struggling G2 in utter amazement. It was its twin, its clone, it was the same. It stepped closer to the G2, and the G2 helplessly waved its long arms at the normal rex.
The normal rex caught one of the arms, and yanked hard, pulling it from its socket. The G2 bellowed in unbearable pain.
Brunell reached the gate, swiped his card through, and unlocked it. They all ran through the big gate, except Grant, who watched the two battling dinosaurs. The dog put its paws on Grant's leg, but the human ignored it. So, the dog followed the others through the gate.
He watched as the normal rex pressed its foot against the G2's rib cage. Then, Grant was sure he saw the rex smile, as it brought its open maw down on the G2's unguarded neck. The G2 wailed in agony and suffering. The horrible sounds of its pain were drowned out, when blood filled its wind pipe.
Grant watched it all, not aware of doing so. He watched as the rex brought its bloody jaws away from the G2's neck, and looked back at Grant. The rex purred like a tiger, then returned to its kill, ignoring Grant all together.
Grant smiled as he walked to the gate, and locked it closed.
    They had made it.
