1 INT. PSYCHIATRIST OFFICE – DAY 1
We OPEN on a man, seemed to be torn away from
reality and dreams. He’s really PANICKY. He is TONY BURNFIELD, a famous book author who has just
recently retired.
The psychiatrist is DR. STEVEN NULLS.
DR. NULLS
How long have you been sleeping this
past week?
TONY
Oh… about…
(BEAT)
Do I have to count?
DR. NULLS
All right. How many hours a day are
you sleeping.
TONY
Right now, it’s up to 18.
The doctor wrote in his PAD.
DR. NULLS
Do you take any stimulants?
TONY looks up, puzzled.
TONY
Why?
DR. NULLS
Just a question.
TONY
No.
DR. NULLS shakes his head.
DR. NULLS
Your telling me you can’t stop
sleeping?
TONY’S face is emotionless.
TONY
Yes.
DR. NULLS
And that you get sleepier too?
TONY
(BEAT)
Yes.
DR. NULLS
This is a first for me, and I’m sure
for anyone else.
TONY looks disgusted by the remark.
TONY
WOW! Should I be thrilled about it.
DR. NULLS
I guess not. Listen, Mr. Burnfield,
take these pills.
(Hands him pills)
And the next morning, you’ll be fine.
I assure you!
TONY looks at the pills in his hand as if studying them.
TONY
I guess if you say so.
DR. NULLS
I do say so.
TONY leaves out the door, not saying a goodbye or so long, and moves quickly at that.
DR. NULLS (cont’d)
I’ll need to work with him a lot
more!
He presses a button on his desks.
DR. NULLS (cont’d)
Fran?!
FRAN speaks.
FRAN
Yes, Dr. Nulls?
DR. NULLS
Hold my office for the next hour and
a half; I’m going to lunch!
We watch DR. NULLS sit back in his luxury chair and look up at his glass roof windows, watching clouds
go by.
DR. NULLS
Uh… What a day! What a day in hell!
