I told my alarmist friends on the right that he wasn't going to take away their guns (despite my cute little bumper sticker), and I told the brainwashed leftist friends that he wasn't going to immediately end either war or be all that different from Bush in a lot of important (for them especially) ways.
Surprisingly, Obama does and says things I occasionally agree with, so it's not like I hate the guy. Y'know, I figured there would be strong anti-Obama feelings from many sides by now, but I had no idea the Republicans would roll out the Looney Tunes roster of candidates, either. I blame McCain for choosing the sexy dimwit as his running mate back before the election. That's when the party really 'jumped the shark,' in hindsight.

Msg #4: On 12/17/2011 at 8:25:49 PM, Trainwreck replied to Msg #3, saying: First, the military does not torture anyone. Second, military spending today is not out of line with the past 70 years in general. Third, the military does *a lot* more than merely fight other similarly-equipped foes; aside from the current wars, there's a lot more going on around the world that no one hears about. Fourth, the Chinese military is and has been improving at an astonishing rate, and will rival ours in strength and technology in the coming decades; it is foolish to believe they will never seek to influence Asia through its force (not necessarily directly). This is fine if you don't mind China having greater influence over its neighbors, but I would prefer an American hegemony to a Chinese one.
Anyway, military spending is not where our money going, and there are much more wasteful and illegitimate programs that we should seek to cut first. I'm not even against a drastic military reduction so long as it is accompanied by a reduction in the frequency and scope of its use. If that were ever to happen, we should also not be astonished by the massively destabilizing effect that would have on the rest of the world.
Finally, I haven't been able to find a reliable source that outlines the NDAA. All I've read thus far are alarmist messages spouted from extremely ideological or otherwise conspiratorial sources. From what I gather, it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be, but it is something that should cause some measure of outrage. To my knowledge, this also does nothing to advance the military's jurisdiction into civilian law enforcement; ie, since we can't enforce civilian laws, we cannot arrest anyone anyway. This would seem to only apply in a wartime scenario (Americans fighting abroad in Pakistan/Afghanistan as members of Al Qaeda, for example).
If anyone knows a good source for info on this bill, I'd appreciate a link. And don't bother posting it if your URL contains the word "truth."

I just posted this because it seemed to be the hot trending image among the douchebag liberal types I know on Facebook.

Msg #8: On 12/18/2011 at 12:41:15 AM, QuickComment replied to Msg #2, saying: ... yeah, no. McCain was never going to beat Obama. He was a squishy middle of the road guy who wasn't willing to engage on hardly any issues. And the suspending his campaign for TARP thing was a massive mistake, even though Obama took about the same position on it in the end.
