    "The Hateful Eight"
On 8/12/2015 at 4:41:01 PM, Ostromite started the thread:

I'm not proud of it, but I did read the script that leaked a while back, and this looks pretty much exactly how I thought it would. I like Tarantino being an excessive postmodern clown, but I'm really excited to see him work in such a restrained mode with such a narrow scope, and I think it's perfectly suited to his oddball sensibilities that he'd pick Ultra Panavision 70mm to film a movie that takes place almost entirely indoors in a single room.

This trailer sucks, though. It looks like it's trying to hide the fact that pretty much the whole movie takes place in that one room to make it seem like another big crazy Tarantino epic, but the fact that it's not another Django Unchained or Kill Bill is what's so cool about it. It also doesn't really showcase the eight main characters.

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I saw the trailer today. It sucks because it's selling me the wrong movie, and it's glaring.

The music does not match the energy of the restrained camera work here. It's like they're trying really hard to let you know it's a Tarantino film.

Having said that, I'm looking forward to it. This trailer is a load of hogwash though.

Yeah. The movie will probably be good, but I hate the cringe inducing too-cool-for-school tone of Tarantino trailers. I barely remember anything of note in this trailer and I watched it just hours ago.

So excited for this. A whole movie of the best scene from Basterds? Yes please. Also getting a bit of a 10 little indians vibe.

EDIT: Holy shit, the new domain actually works. I thought it was a read-only archive thing.

They don't have to sell us on the format, but I truly hope there's more of this in the future. Really going to have to track down a 70mm screening.

Tarantino is turning into a stupid old crank with his film fetish. I was excited that he shot this in 70mm, and I guess it's cool that he's using the exact lenses they shot Spartacus with, but his asinine insistence that digital projection is "TV in public" has made him re-cut the movie for wide release to be faster paced for the thickheaded plebeians at the regular theaters. I know he probably thinks it's ultimately going to make for a better movie-going experience for everyone, but its an insidious kind of snobbery to make the "real" version of the movie only accessible to a few people around the country. I've supported his work for years, as a consumer and a critic, but now I have to make an eight-hour drive round trip to go see the version of the movie that I would prefer. What a dickhead. Just let us watch the fucking movie. I know you lose something in digital projection on a smaller screen, but you're still getting 99% of the same experience. I especially get annoyed that all this fussy pedantry is coming from a guy who learned cinema from watching panned-and-scanned VHS tapes.

There's a charm to pan and scan :)
For some reason, it makes Lethal Weapon funnier.

Just got back from the 70mm cut. It's filled with both great stuff and... a lot of familar stuff. Tarantino doing what he does... again. Characters talk at length, a violent outcome is suggested, violent outcome eventually happens. End. The format looked great, the performances are great, the dialogue is some of the best he's written. If that's what you want, there it was. I kind of wish he'd move onto something with more of a point, but maybe this is all he needs to do since he's good at it. If you're a Tarantino fan, it's worth locating the Roadshow version. I'm passionate about that part and the craft of many of the scenes, but I guess I feel like I've seen this before. Many are quick to say that about The Force Awakens, but the genuine heart and soul of that film within the storytelling and characters go a long way in crafting something that felt fresh. I thought the first 90 mins of this had sparks of what I wanted to see, and then the final hour is Tarantino doing exactly what I got the last time. Still a strong enough experience, and I don't regret tracking the longer cut down.

Msg #9: On 12/26/2015 at 7:28:29 PM, Ostromite replied, saying:
I'm honestly glad that Tarantino has made a low-key, straight-forward genre movie with no "point". All his movies are basically just action-comedies, but because he's a smart dialogue writer, has a great ear for soundtrack music, does interesting things with genre conventions, and actually gives a shit about how his movies look visually, everyone treats him like un artiste du cinema. I'm sure he loves the adoration, but I don't think he ever wanted people to think of him as the American Godard. Sticking to what he knows to make reliable entertainment is the best contribution he can make to the artform and the industry, especially if the alternative is him getting serious about "expressing himself" and making pretentious, incoherent arthouse drivel like Godard has been doing for the past 15 years.
