    "Insidious Chapter Three"
On 10/23/2014 at 3:45:27 PM, PaulSF started the thread:

For my Insidious bro's Grinch and Raptor; into The Further, we go...

Figured we couldn't go wrong with Leigh in the directors chair. Very visually faithful, yet feels new as well.

Grinch, this one adds upon your review "a madcap world with beardy, mohawked psychics" :lol

I still wish this had a subtitle other than "Chapter 3" as the story of the family from the first two movies was concluded with Chapter Two and this takes place before that anyway, but that's essentially the only thing I can complain about. This looks like another great time at the movies, and I so wish it was going to be out in time for Halloween this year but oh well. I'll still be there day 1.

I am glad they went the prequel route, too, so they could have Elise alive again. It worked in the last part of Chapter Two having her function as kind of their "ghost guide" but it would have been goofy if they'd attempted to continue that for the entirety of this movie.

Can't wait. LW is the right guy to move forward with the series and carve out the wider mythology to move this universe beyond the Lambert family.

Three films then a move to television?

I know I'm butting my head into a conversation that has nothing to do with me, but...

The idea of a bunch of sequels - indeed, an entire franchise - springing up from Insidious is the main thing keeping me from actually watching it. I put it off initially because I just never got around to seeing it, but now I don't know if I even want to because it feels like it's just the first "chapter" in this long saga I have to get invested in if I'm interested in it, like the first one is incomplete without the sequels.

I don't think so. If it is, then Carpenter's Halloween is incomplete without watching the other eight, or even just the second, which takes place minutes after. They made sequels because mammoth profit took place and each of their conclusions made it incredibly easy to do so, but they both have an ending and don't require you to proceed to understand what you just saw. If you end up enjoying it, by all means, Chapter Two picks up right after and dives into some mythology and expands upon certain elements. If there's a difference, it's that the original director actually came back to do the second, unlike Halloween II.

I think the Insidious films - the first two, anyway - each tell their own seperate story, while also expanding on each other. Especially with the first one, you can watch it and get a complete and engaging story without really needing to see the second one. Sure, it elaborates on some of the backstory from Chapter 1, but it's nothing that is going to leave you completely lost after watching part 1 if you don't watch part 2. I'm sure Chapter Three will be the same way....I have no doubt there will be some element connecting it to the previous movies as it is a prequel (aside from the returning characters, of course) but for the most part it is its own seperate and self contained story.

Personally, I don't really understand why you wouldn't watch Chapter Two if you enjoyed the first one, as both are great and compliment each other, and it's not like it is some huge time commitment.

Just came back from the Orlando premiere. I felt this was the best of the three.

Excellent non-ADD pacing, a large amount of actual tension and atmosphere, some terrific character writing with unexpected thematic heft, and a genuinely disturbing, original antagonist that made the demon and witch from the first two feel like a couple of schmucks. It's Leigh Whannell's directorial debut, and he knocked it out of the park. There are more than a few requisite scares, but the aforementioned tension made them earned, and more than the previous installments, had moments prior these scares of frightening imagery delivered with no loud CRASH on the soundtrack. The images were enough to make the audience quiver without being cattle prodded, and Whanell knew it.

The characters are great, the tension is great, the visual style differentiated itself from James Wan's look quite substantially, and this was very welcome. Whereas Wan opted for some Argento like reds and a generally slick digital style, Leigh approaches the look in a far more filmic 35mm kind of way. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that unlike the previous two, this was indeed shot on film. It looked terrific. All in all, I haven't felt that stomach churning suspense in a horror movie since The Conjuring. This and Poltergeist sharing screens at the same time... what a joke. 4.5/5

Yeah, so this was a total ball. Another completely satisfying entry in the series with Whanell doing a first class job of filling Wan's boots.

    See you again in 2017.

How does this hold up with no Rose Byrne to sex up the screen the whole time?
