While Ariana Richards (Lex) will not run from dinos again in Jurassic Park 3, she will run from worms again in 'Tremors 3', to be shown on TV in 2001. (From: 'Utahraptor')

"What do all of you do for work?"
On 11/28/2017 at 7:52:41 PM, Colin started the thread:
Question 1 -- What do you all of you do for work?

Question 2 -- When you were young(er) and visiting the website, what did you think you were going to do? In what ways has your life turned out in comparison with your expectations?

I imagine many of us wanted to be in film and I'm curious as to how many ultimately pursued that aspiration and who chose different careers.

    I'm a quant.

I wanted to be a film director or a mathematician, so I failed in every way.

    Whoops --

I work as a writer's assistant to John Logan. He's a screenwriter who co-wrote Gladiator, wrote The Aviator and created Penny Dreadful. We're developing a few series and he's offered me the chance to write an episode if one of them gets greenlit.

I feel incredibly grateful to have this job and I'm really excited about the possibilities it could potentially lead to.

    --

As far as my expectations are concerned, well--When I was in my teens, I was probably expecting to already be a big filmmaker by the time I turned 30 (which is next year), but considering I'm in my desired industry with promising opportunities, I feel pretty thankful. I didn't get a college degree and dicked around in my hometown for longer than I should, but now I'm busting my ass to try to catch up.

Jurassic Park and The Lost world and Jurassic Park III really turned me onto science and whatnot when I was young, so growing up I always thought I would pursue something science-y. Then in high school I really got into music and eventually became an Audio Engineer. While in school for that, I got very much into Nutrition and Exercise, which is what I mainly do professionally now. I hope to someday combine my interests into some new and interesting projects as I turn 30 next year as well. Joined when I was 12, still here at 30, Sheesh....

Mostly data analysis and database administration for a pharmaceutical manufacturer.

I had no fucking clue what I was going to do when I was younger. Sure I wanted to make films but I knew that was mostly unrealistic unless I worked my ass off (when I enjoy downtime and personal hobbies instead) and was relentlessly extroverted (Which I am not).

I have enjoyed working with data since I was a teenager though so I am mostly satisfied with my job. And it's one of the few local jobs (close to family and friends in a quieter town) in data analysis I could get, so yeah.

    Question 1- https://sultanofscrape.com/

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7270974/

Paying the bills before I am summoned north: Magic Kingdom this and that's here at Disney World. Work almost every day. The difference between working in a theme park to filmmaking is amusingly large.

2- It's what I'd hoped to get tangled in my whole life, and I'm in shock that it's actually making progress and going this well. Should begin filming in 2018.

All I need is Colin siting net to John Logan in the audience one day, and I'll really wonder how the hell any of this happened.

I read that commutes are like a primary indicator of life satisfaction.

I'm so glad I live close enough to home that I can literally go there for my lunch hour.

I'm so spoiled that I think driving 10 minutes into town to get something is a pain in the ass... lol.

Something not even worth mentioning. Going to school for film though. I plan on being an editor.

I've done some work for a BBC documentary, was a PA for some ESPN commercials, and did some writing for Dying Light. Slowly putting that resume together. Still hoping.

Been here since December of 2000. I was 12 and I'm 29 now. Pretty crazy.

I am a locksmith. Of all the fucking things. It's fun. I enjoy it. Doesn't pay as well as a lot of jobs but it's interesting. Kinda wandered into it, honestly. After I graduated university with a BA in English and Film, I cast the nets looking for a fulltime job and wound up in an apprenticeship. Been with it ever since.

Way back when, I wanted to do...everything. Make movies. Write books. Whatever. Unfortunately my personality type is noncommittal. I will never make a movie. I have the potential to write a novel but I'm just too fucking lazy. I've had one in the works for years and am not even close to a first draft yet. Wish I knew how to change my attitude, but I don't.

    ... Holy crap.

Stumbled upon a link to this place after feeding into my narcissism and searching my name on Google. Was shocked to see a "2018" date on a reply.

I'm currently a writer. Travel, entertainment, lifestyle - whatever the hell pays, for the most part.

I forget if I was writing at the time this place was still active... but it has been my goal for quite some time. So, yay me?

Glad to see some of y'all are still alive.

Msg #16: On 9/17/2018 at 4:51:06 PM, Compy01 replied to Msg #11, saying:
Dac, writing a novel is just a slow burning process. I've written one and I'm halfway through a second. My first one took about two years because I "just wrote" with no planning -- the lack of structure forced massive re-writes to the point where it practically wasn't the same novel. It has some good elements in it, I'm really proud of the third act, but as they say, no one will put up with a shoddy opening and middle to even get to the "good" bits.

Still, I learnt a lot from the process. My second one is coming on a lot smoother. I mapped out the pivot points, the plot points, the theme and the arcs for all of my characters, so I'm always building up to something. It can be difficult, but I write at least 500 words a day, not easy when you only have three hours in the afternoon after a long day, commute, with a girlfriend and other errands to pay attention to. I've basically had to eliminate social media (good), TV and film (bad). Almost all of my time is spent either writing and researching.

I mean this in work, too. I'm an SEO copywriter. So I guess my English BA and Journalism MA weren't entirely wasted, even if I had to do an unpaid internship for the experience because no employer gives a shit what education you have, not unless you have experience.
