Everyone I knew in Britain knew it was going to happen. My brother won £800 and his mate won £2,500 betting on a Trump victory. And the writing was on the wall for me when I heard the BBC reporting about the unprecedented queues outside the polling stations. It smacked of Brexit 2.0, and when Hillary struggled to take Virginia.
I don't get how the geniuses in Washington failed to see this coming. This sort of upset is happening all over the world. The Greeks rejected austerity despite the media onslaught to accept it. In Blighty we've had Jeremy Corbyn become the leader of the Labour party (an old socialist who everyone thought was unelectable), and of course, Brexit, which genuinely shocked me stiff for about a week because I never imagined it would actually happen.
But since the rude awakening of Brexit I had the suspicion of President Trump.
Trump is, of course, the monster creation of the left, which is now nothing like the old left. It is now regressive, obsessed with identity politics and race, and censorship. I almost stopped following the Guardian after being told Trump's victory was down to misogyny and the indulgence of angry white men. The reality is Trump under-performed when it came to attracting the white vote and over-performed when it came to attracting the minority vote.
