Orange Lakes By swardy
Scene 1: Dulles Airport, Washington D.C. Early morning around 5:30. A young man in his early 30’s late 20’s gets out of a yellow cab. He is medium build around 5’11 and has sandy brown hair. He thanks the cab driver and puts a single strap backpack over his head and carries a single suitcase. He carries it through the doors into the terminal past the ticket booth. He already has his ticket in his back pants pocket. He strolls over to the star bucks and orders a vente hot chocolate. He gives the lady behind the counter 5 dollar bill and gets a dollar fifty back. He thanks her and continues on his way. He bypasses security without a problem and goes to wait for his plane in gate 4. He takes a seat away from the crowd and lays his head against the rest and shuts his eyes. A voice calls out: Kathryn: There’s nothing like a spring morning in northern Virginia huh? You see the mist out over your yard and walk out of your house into the cool breeze. It gives you just that much energy to go through the day.
Our man, Matt, lifts his head and sees a beautiful young women in front of him. He smiles and nods. Matt: Yah, I know what you mean. It’s a morning like today that you get up extra early just to linger out to your car cause its so comfortable outside.
She grins. Matt: What’s your name?
Kathryn: My names Kathryn. How bout yours.
Matt half frowns.
Matt: My names Matt. It’s such a common name. Gets pretty boring when you’re in a room with five other Matts.
Kathryn: I could imagine. So what brings you to Orange County?
We know see Kathryn take a seat next to him and he sits up straighter.
Matt: Well, I was born there and I’m just going back to visit. There’s nothing like visiting this place.
Kathryn: Yah, I’m visiting also. I was born here but I always have had family out there. Its very comforting place.
They both smile at the thought of landing in Orange County. After the nod their heads at the thought for a while there’s an awkward silence. Matt keeps nodding his head and looks slowly towards the ground.
Kathryn: So where in Virginia are you from? Or do you come down from Maryland?
Matt: Fairfax. It’s where my family moved when I was younger and I just haven’t gotten out yet. It seems like I keep the plans to move somewhere else in the back of my mind but never go through with them.
Kathryn: What’s so bad about Fairfax? It’s a nice place. I live just south in Reston.
Matt: It’s just too plain. Green Trees in the summer and brown in the winter and each year happens the same. I know it sounds stupid since southern California doesn’t exactly experience the season but out there it just seems alive.
Kathryn: No, that’s not stupid that’s just how you feel.
Matt contorts his face. He normally would be fine to talk with someone new, anyone new but he is taken aback by this comment. Matt frowns, thinking she is calling him stupid or something like that and cocks his head to the side.
Matt: So do you love where you live?
Kathryn: My life just seems so boring. I do the same thing everyday. Go to work, sit behind my desk and pretend to file papers and what not for my boss. I just zone out and since I’ve been doing this for about 4 years it automatic for me to do everything. What do you do?
Matt: I work at Target. I’m the manager. In my spare time I try to write some songs. I used to think that I would have this amazing gift to write songs but I never had the guts to play a song for someone.
Kathryn: That’s too bad.
An announcement is over heard that all passengers in rows 1-10 are now boarding. Matt gets up. So does Kathryn.
Kathryn: What seat do you have?
Matt: 6.
Kathryn 5. At least were not total strangers.
She picks her bags up and walks past him. He shakes his head, trying to wake up.
