    6/30/02-

    INT.- beach- day
A loud sound like that of a helicopter blade is heard in the background as the view opens on a shoreline then slowly glides up the beach.

    BAHI`A ANASCO
    COSTA RICA
    EXT. medical bunker
The shot fades up the beach to a small reclusive medical clinic.
The helicopter sound is louder now.
The face of Dr. Roberta Carter is seen in the closed window.

    CARTER
    Damn this rain!

Her paramedic Manuel Aragon smiles as she began pacing across the room.
Then he cocks his head up as if listening.

    MANUEL
    Listen!

Carter turns around with a sarcastic tone in her voice

    CARTER
    Trust me, I hear it.

Manuel looks to her once more.

    MANUEL
    Listen again.

She hears it, the sound of monster chopper coming their way. She runs to the window.

    CARTER
They can't be flying in weather like this! Get the kit ready.

    EXT. HELIPAD-

The chopper is preparing for descent. On the side of it the words "BIOSYN CONSTRUCTION" are seen

Carter and Manuel climb onto the landing pad.

The chopper lands and immediatly a man jumps out. The man's wearing a met's baseball cap and nice shirt and tie with an open parka covering everything. He barks orders in Spanish into the chopper as two crewman wearing Biosyn jumpsuits walk out carrying a strecher with a limp body inside. The two crewmen began shouting in spanish.

    MANUEL
    They're calling for a doctor!

Manuel and Carter run over to the stretcher and disgusted by what they see. The man in the hat runs over and tells the story.

    BASELTON
    George Baselton's the name
We have a very sick man here doctors!

Carter shoots him a look of DUH!!!
They begin going down into the clinic.

    CARTER
Why didn't you go all the way to San Jose, they are better prepared for medical emergencies than we are.

    BASELTON
We would not have made it in time!

They get down into the clinic and Manuel begins working on him while Carter probes George Baselton. Baselton was incedbly nervous and figity

    CARTER
    What happened to this man?

    BASELTON
Construction accident, um a back hoe ran over him

    CARTER
Looks like he was mauled to me.

    BASELTON
No, no, all the witnesses um said it was the backhoe.

    MANUEL
Dr. Carter you better get in here!

She rushes in to see that the man is shaking uncontrollably
His whole body is pale and the wounds are filled with a pussy venom.

    CARTER
Give him a tranquillizer, before he goes into shock!

Manuel gives the young man of about twenty a shot.

    MANUEL
    Do you want lavage?

    CARTER
Wait until after we block him.

She turns to Baselton who looks to be having a nervous breakdown

    CARTER
    Mr. Baselton, please wait outside.

    BASELTON
    Why?

    CARTER
Do you want us to help him or not?

    Baselton angrily leaves

Carter truns to the patient, who looking worse by the moment.

    MANUEL
    What did he say happened?

    CARTER
He was caught under a backhoe.

Manuel looks at Bobby with a look of suspicion.

    CARTER
You and I both know this wasn't a mechanical injury, but I can't imagine the creature that did this.

JUst then the boy begins slowly murmuring, the boy is near death now

    BOY
    LO SA RAPTOR! RAPTOR!

    CARTER
    What's he saying?

    MANUEL
    No es espanol

    CARTER
    It's not Spanish? Well,
    continue what you were doing.

    MANUEL
    He smell.

She touched the wound and the substance now clogging burnt her hand.

Just then the patient arose and began vomiting blood everywhere.
He suffers through several vioent convulsions as the two try to constrain him. Baselton runs him

    BASELTON
What the hell is going on here???

Then the patient sunk back onto the stretcher and with that he was dead

    MANUEL
    Raptor means Hupia, THE HUPIA!!!

CARTER and Baselton both stare intently as Manuel backs up to the wall.
Carter goes back up to the patient to give him CPR. Chest compressions don't work and then she resorts to mouth to mouth.

    MANUEL
No, the HUPIA WILL GO IN YOU!!!

SHe knew it wouldn't help anyway, the boy was gone

The three just stood for a moment in an eery awe.

    EXT. - helipad

Baselton is shouting orders at the crewmen again.

The three watch as the same crewman take the covered strecher back onto the chopper.

Baselton stops and goes back to Manuel and Carter

    BASELTON
I'm sure you did all that you could for him.

With that Baselton stepped aboard the chopper and it headed back to wherever it came from.

Dr. Carter had a thousand questions running through her mind at that moment, but only one could find its way out.

    CARTER
    Where did they come from?

    MANUEL
That company has a business prospect out there on some island about hundred miles from here. I feel better with thme gone, I hope they never come back.

Manuel made his way back in with just Roberta staring at the sky.
    The screen fades to black.

    THE NEW WORLD
    JURASSIC PARK

The screen fades into the sound of waves crashing against the surf

INT. - Roberta's living quarters behind the clinic-night

Dr. Carter is sitting on her bed beside a Spanish dictionary.

First she opens the spanish dictionary and looks under the R's

She found the word and it meant ravisher or abductor

Then she walks to her backpack which is laying in her chairby her computer desk.

She pulls out a guide to Costa Rican history

She turns to the chapter on legends and mythology

She finds an article on the hupia

Hupia- mythical ghosts or faceless vampires that kidnap small children in the night, according to local legends the creatures once lived in the mountainous regions of the country but now inhabit offshore islands.

At that moment Elena Morales knocks on the door

    CARTER
    Come in.

Elena is plump woman of sixty that is the local midwife in the small fishing village.

    ELENA
Dr. Carter, Marilyn's contractions are getting closer together, she'll be ready in half an hour or so.

    CARTER
    Thank you, how's she doing?

Loud groans and moans are heard down the hall

    Elena grins at Carter

    CARTER
    That good, huh

Elean prepares to step out when

    CARTER
Elena, one more thing; what is a raptor?

    Elena looks curious

    ELENA
Raptor? Well, from what I know it is a man who steals children

    CARTER
    Hupia?

    ELENA
    Don't say this now.

She nods her head towards the next room where the groans are sounding from.

    CARTER
Does a raptor bite or thrash it victims?

Elena is growing tired of this conversation

    ELENA
No, it is a man who steals a newborn, I'm sure of it.

    Dr. Carter looks discouraged

    Elena walks out hurrily.

Then she grabs an English dictionary on her nightstand.

An inquisitive look develops on her face as she turns to the the R's

    Raptor\n[deriv.of L. raptor plunderer,fr. raptus]:bird of prey.

the camera zooms in slightly on the words on the phrase bird of prey

The shot fades in a yellow surfboard with the words"bird of prey imprinted onto it.

    INT. -BEACH-MORNING

The words GULF OF NICOYA appear at the bottom of the shot.

A land rover is parked at the end of a gravel road leading to the beach.
Two men in the 20's zip up their wetsuits and pull out two surfboards.

We see this from the view of shoreline several feet away.

The two guys run to the edge of the beach.

    Surfer #1
    This shouldn't be too hard.

    Surfer #2
Accroding to the guide we got back at the station this is the best place in Costa Rica to surf.

    Surfer #1
    Comapred to what?

    EXT. WATER- MORNING

The two guys mount their boards to grab the next wave.

Surfer 2 has the bird of prey board.

    Surfer #1
    Allright, let's ride!

Now this is seen from the view of the beach.

They both surf the wave. It's a good-sized wave but nothing like what could be experienced in the Hawaiin islands.

A series of sots show the two guys surf and wipe out many times.

    After a awhile they're bored.

They have gone out beyond the waves a few feet still sitting on their boards.

    Surfer #2
Allright, I admit it Hawaii would've been perfect.

    Surfer #1
Yep, but we're stuck here, so let's make the best of it.
I'm going back to the hotel and get a massage.

    Surfer #2
One, we couldn't afford Hawaii and two look at this view.

Surfer #1 looks around and sees something laying by the rocks.

    Surfer #1
What in the hell is that?

    Surfer 2 sees it to.

    Surfer #2
    Godzilla?

    Ext. -beach- day

This shot is from above, showing the two surfers walking around the massive rotting carcass.

    Surfer #2
I'm going to the car, I'm going to make a phone call.

Surfer 1 looks at his nauseated frind and then turns back around. He walks to the end of the carcass and sees another body lying on the tail.

    Ext. CAR-DAY

Surfer 2 is throwing up behind the car.

He opens the door and looks for the cellphone.

Surfer 1 moves closer to the greenish-brown body.
He peers directly at it and SNAP!!!!!!!
The vreature bites his cheek and he bleeds.
It runs into the forest. He falls back and hundreds of little squeks come from the bushes ahead.

Surfer 2 is dialing a number when he hears a shreek of pain.
He drops the phone and heads to the body.

We see him runiing to the body and we see what he sees

His friends is covered in hundreds of small lizard-like animals.

    Surfer 2
    HOLY SHIIII!!!

That truns into the sound of a mother in the hspital wing saying SSHHH to her newborn baby.

INT. DECK OF MATERNAL WING- EVENING- BAHIA ANASCO

A very tired a stressed mother is rocking her new born-babe.
She's in hospital garments and is at best looking work out.

    MOTHER
HUSH LITTLE BABY DONT SAY A WORD

The baby coos and caas and quits down

    MOTHER
MOMMA'S GONNA BUY YOU MOCKING BIRD
    AND IF THAT....

She quits as she sees the baby is asleep

She leaves the door open and gently lays the bay down in it's crib.

she goes down the hall to Dr. Carter's office.

Dr. Carter is still reading for info on the raptor and hupia.

    CARTER
    IS HE ASLEEP?

    MOTHER
No problem, he's had a busy first day.
What are doing with all of those books.

    CARTER
Nothing, something from a case earlier today.

    MOTHER
    Good Night, Doctor.

CARTER doesn't even reply because she is absorbed by this curiosity.

    9min.

She goes back into the room and lays in her hospital bed
She sits up and grabs a magazine off of the lamp table.
She turns on the light and sees many small lizard shapes hovering around the crib's top.
She screams and runs out of bed. in the prcess she knocks over nighstand and then she wales through the hall.

    EXT. -OFFICE- SAME MOMENT

Dr. Carter lies back in her chair and is awoken by the shouts and screams.

Carter leaps out of her office and down the hall past a crying, screaming Marilyn in the arms of Elena.

She makes it to the doorwayand sees the broken lamp on the floor.
A boly of lightning flashes and dozens of compies are fleeing the scene out of the back. with bloody footprints.

Another lightning bolt pierces the sky and the fear on Carter' face is seen for a second.

A third lightning bolt goes acroos the sky this time it dissolves back into a room in a local medical center.

    INT. - HOSPITAL- NIGHT

The attacked surfer is lying in a bed with bandages and an oxygen mask attached.

The camera goes over him and to the waiting room outside.

There the friend has a towel wrapped around him and is chatting with Dr. Michael Cruz.

    CRUZ
He's resting peacefully, he's still critical, but he'll pull through.

The surfer is close to shock but is trying to keep it together.

    Surfer #2
Thanks. it just happened like that, one minute uh looking at the dead dinosaur and then it happened.

    CRUZ
You said you didn't know what it was. That it was something you'd never seen.

    SURFER #2
Well, that's what it looked like anyway. a big lizard or some kind of reptile.

    CRUZ
OK, where are you guys originally from?
You guys are out here for vacation?

    SURFER #2
Yes, I'm Jack Barnes and that's Daniel Noble.
We're from Padre Island, Texas. We both work at an electrical maintenance comapny. We don't surf much so we figured we'd come out here.

Cruz is mildly interested in the conversation and is thinking of something else.

    CRUZ
Look, I called a guy from San Jose, a herpetologist.

    The young man is confused

    CRUZ
A reptile scientist named Martin Guiterrez.
    He specializes in smaller reptilians.
    He's interested in your sighting.

    INT.- STREET-RAINY NIGHT

A latemodel Ford Taurus pulls down a lonely dark road into the Gulf's main town.

It pulls down to a small medical clinic in the downtown sector.

A young American man of about thirty walks into the waiting room through the front wing of the clinic to the room where Cruz and the surfers are waiting.

    Cruz sees Marty coming

    CRUZ
Marty, it's been awhile, kill anybody, discover any new lizards.

    MARTY
    The first one's more likely.

They realize that pleasentries should be saved for later.

    MARTY
I'm Marty Guiterrez, I'm sure you knew i was coming.

    JACK(surfer #2)
Yeah, I'm supposed to give you report on what happened.
I'm tired so can I make this quick

    MARTY
Don't worry about details. I know you've been over it a thousand times, just tell me about the creatures.

    JACK
The dead one was big, over twenty feet long, looked like a freakin dinosaur. The other were small and green, about foot ot two long.

    MARTY
Give us a rough sketch of the scene. No pressure

The boy sits down and uses a mgic marker to quickly draw what he saw.

He holds up the picture and we see a dead PARASAUROLOPHUS with dozens of little COMPSAGNATHUS's eating the flesh.

MARTY's eyes grow wide and he looks into the kid's eyes.

    INT.- BEACH-DAWN

Marty Guiterrez is sitting on the shoreline thinking if he has finally made a discovery worth publishing nationally.

The rains began to come again and he ran up the beach towards the streetwhen he sees a monkey hiding in a tree with a dead lizard in his mouth.

Marty runs to the tree and looks at the monkey's catch.

    MARTY
    SHEW SHEW MONKEY!!!!

He grabs the lizard and peers into it's black eyes

    INT.-LAB- SAN JOSE- day

We see thousands of little microrganisms moving about under the microscope.

he moves his head away and picks up two sample bags on his desk.

    SAMPLE I

    The message is sent.

    INT.- HOME- DAY
The house is empty but the fax machine comes alive a accepts the fax.
    Nobody is home.

    INT. OFFICE-NIGHT

Marty reenters his office a few hours later and finds no reply.

    MARTY
Allright, no reply, let's if the nightowl known a Dr. Patrick Simpson is suffering from Insomnia tonight.

He once again turns the fax on and sends his message.
Thirty minutes later he gets a reply.

    REPLY TO SAMPLE I

FROM PATRICK SIMPSON, NEW YORK, NY

    SPECIES: CONFIRMED AS BASILISCUS FAMILY
    MIGHT BE NEW SPECIES

    REPLY TO SAMPLE II

FROM PATRICK SIMPSON, NEW YORK, NEW YORK

SPECIES: THIS SUBSTANCE IS SALIVA, NOT A VENOM
BUT DOES CONTAIN SOME TOXIC CELLS. NOT DANGEROUS and NO SPECIAL PREVEMTION ACTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN. SPECIES UNIDENTIFIABLE. NOT BASILISCUS. MAIL SAMPLES TO ME ASAP

He turns the machine off and wheels to his computer and opens file called VENOM?

    Marty begins to rationalize.

    MARTY
So the good doctor thinks it is a new memeber of the BASILISCUS

He opens the file and looks at the gentic makeup of the saliva.

    MARTY
NOT venom, but dos have some toxic power, so I don't what the hell this is. May not be BASILISCUS AFTER ALL. HMMM

He grabs a package and begins to fill out the mail procedure.

He sits it outside his office for the mailman. it's rush delivery mail.

    FOUR DAYS LATER

INT. - NEW YORK- SIMPSON AND PARTNERS- DAY

    EXT. -LAB

A woman wearing a white lab coat opens a mailbox to find a package from costa Rica.

    ALICE
Ah, Something else from Dr. Guiterrez. I was beginning to think he'd given up finding new lizrds. Faye, let's take a look at this in the lab.

    EXT. Dissecting room

The two women are dressed in Surgeon attire with Surgeon toys.

They open the frozen bag and pull the dead lizard from it.

    FAYE
He sent us a half-eaten lizard, great.

    ALICE
    Looks like a dinosaur!

    FAYE
Are You a crazy, according to the box it's a BASILISCUS SOMETHING
A dinosaur, huh, where on Earth would you get that idea?

    ALICE
It's teenysaurus or something, a mini-dino. For your info GULF of NICOYa isn't far from those islands.

    FAYE looks confused

    ALICE
You know, Isla Nublor or Isla Soarn, or something like that.

    FAYE
Oh, nothing could get off those islands. The military has offshore posts. Nothing's going anywhere.

    ALICE
Since Simpson's on sick leaver, neither is this little dinosaur.

    FAYE giggles

    6min.

    INT.-DESERT-NEW MEXICO HIGHWAY-AFTERNOON

We see the highway from above with desolate land surrounding it.

Metallica's cover of "Turn the Page" is blaring from an unseen car.

    The music slowly sounds in.

A Jeep Wrangler comes into view, the source of the music.

The jeep pulls into the driveway of large farm/ranch house.

Behind the house is a wide farmland.

An old man is mowing his front yard, but stops when the jeep pulls in.

    The radio is turned off.

A young man in his late 20's or so walks out of the jeep and towards the man.

    FARMER
Can I help with you something, you look a little lost.

    BRENNAN
Yes, I think i am. How do I get to the Sante Fe Institute?

    FARMER
The place for those high on themselves lecturers.
Sorry, go thirteen or fourteen miles East on that dirtroad ahead.
    You can't miss it.

Brennan grabs his map and looks at the circled area close to Sante Fe.

    BRENNAN
This way's not on the map.

The farmer shows he has a grasp of Sarcasm.

    FARMER
    You don't say!

    INT.- INSTITUTE- DAY

There are many scientists and noted lecturers in the small conferencing room.
The camera follows the up the rows of chairs and to the podium where Dr. Will Brennan is speaking.

    BRENNAN
I want to thank you for accepting my application for memebership here.
I know this is a very select group of scholars and researchers and i am proud to part of this group.

The President of the group rises from his chair.

    PRESIDENT
We are proud to have you sir. Your contributions to the sciences of paleontology and paleobiology over the past 2 years have been well appreciated. As you know you will be required to lecture or publish findings once a year.

    BRENNAN
I understand that well. I've prepared a short speech for the society.
It's not long, but i want to arouse a discussion.

    The president nods.

    BRENNAN
Extinction, a definitive word. Many natural species have at one time or another dominated the world, but sadly have mysteriously died out. Dinosaurs are a prime example. The rules the earth for over a hundred million years. Then suddenly died out. Then new life sprang out. Out of extinction. My question to you today is does extinction truly exist among higher life forms. Today thousands of species of birds fly the skies. Their anatomical structure is similar to that of some dinosaurs.
The shape of the bones. The way they move and eat. Natural disasters are responsible for extinction, but may they also be responsible for evolution. One day we may too die out as a species. Will we die though? Or just evolve into something greater.

Fellow member DR. RICHARD LEVINE makes a comment.

    LEVINE
What's your evidence for these accusations huh?
Extinction usually does allow for new life to rise about but no finfings have proved that evolution comes from extinction.

    Brennan recognizes the obnoxious man

    He smiles

    BRENNAN
Thank you Dr. Levine, it's good to see you here.
I hope you will give me time to prove this theory.

    LEVINE
Time is all we have, and it's good to see you in one peace.

A few of the scientists laugh.

    BRENNAN
At least I'm not dead, like originally reported. Just slightly dead.
    Saved by the Surgeons.

    LEVINE
    TRUE!

    EXT.- COURTYARD- CLOUDY AFTERNOON

Dr. Brennan is walking to his car when he is stopped by a beautiful latina.

He turns around and very hatefully states...

    BRENNAN
    What do you want Simone?

    SIMONE
Marty Guiterrez has been tryin to get a ahold of you for over a week now. He called me and told me you have several faxes.

Will is very hostile towards her and shows it by the way he speeds up.

    BRENNAN
    Haven't been home in awhile.
    Thanks for the message. BYE!

    Simone knows his anger.

    SIMONE
So, it's true. You still hate me.

    He truns around.

    BRENNAN
I've got my reasons. You left me when at my worst.
I was held in Costa Rica for six months after getting out of the hospital, because you would not confirm my identity. You left me high and dry. For your sister's wedding.

    SIMONE
    That was important.

    BRENNAN
My life isn't, you didn't come back for me.

    SIMONE
    Selfish BASTARD!!!

He drops his cane and gets in his car.

    Simone grabs the cane.

    SIMONE
    Don't forget this!

Hid eyes are full of rage.
