Black Book Series: PowerScape, Part Two
    By monkeyboy777

    chapter two:

Nelson pulls up to the condo complex in downtown L.A. at almost eleven at night. After parking, he walks right up to the main hall to find the manager’s office. Inside a squat little man is sitting behind a counter reading the newspaper. Nelson sees the familiar article on the front page again, and lets out a small sigh while glancing around. From what he could tell from the brochures and building layout, the condo setup looked to be of some higher middleclass material, not too low and not too bold. It would work.
The man from the counter looked up from the paper at him as Nelson passed.
“What can I help you with young man?” He asked sliding out a sheet of paper with lists and sites upon it onto the desk. It listed the overall rooms and prices. Nelson put a still hand up then scanned the sheet till he reached something acceptable. A two bedroom, one bath, den, main hall, two closet, and kitchen for a decent $850 a month. “I’ll take this one if its not in use.” Nelson pointed at the exact spot on the site map amid where those condo types where located. He also read the man’s thoughts.
'Hope you can afford it kid'.
“Very good …” Replied the man, eyeing the site and Nelson. “Pretty expensive though. There’s a hundred dollar deposit for insurance and the $850 at the end of this month.” He pulled out another slip of paper and handed it across to Nelson. It was a release form of sorts for the condo, and Nelson read it swiftly then signed it and handed over the hundred.
“Gracias,” said the man turning away to file the paper, and gather a set of keys from a hook next to a bulletin board. On the board were lost animals, wanted ads, and vehicles for sale. Nelson spotted an individual flyer that peaked his interest a bit. It was for a local high-class sports bar. It read ‘Bartender wanted, minor experience required, position needs to be filled. Inquire at…’ It seemed a good idea to Nelson to stash the flyer away in his pocket, he did need a new job after all. The man turned back to Nelson and handed him the key to his apartment. He also asked Nelson if he needed any help finding the place or anything else. But Nelson declined and took the key before heading out the front doors. His condo was in the southern part of the complex. He rode his bike to a space by his door and got out his keys. The two keys had a curious symbol on them, Nelson guessed old Mexican. Also, he noticed, his door had the same symbol upon it allowing him to easily find it. After unlocking the door and stepping through into the hall, Nelson glanced around at his new ‘home’.
    'Quaint little place'.
It was almost completely dark inside, save a small nightlight on the wall, probably time controlled as well as manually. And the place smelled real clean to Nelson, so that was a good sign. But he didn’t really take all this in, anyways. Exhausted from days of driving and exerting a large amount of his energies, he walked straight over to the master bedroom. Nelson then took one look around, closed his eyes, and then passed straight out with a collapse onto the floor. He was out before he hit the ground. A new bed would be good, but that could wait.

    chapter three:

Darkness. All was darkness. Then explosions, blinding bursts of fire and chaos. For what seemed an eternity, the young man once known as Adam Scott Haines, could only feel a sharp searing pain within his head. More explosions, and sharp pain in the heart and head. Then he could feel and see himself flying in the winds above a city. It was L.A. Moving very fast he is carried over the landscape in a matter of moments. Then he is over Phoenix and passes over it quickly, all the while hearing murmurs of the past and ones unknown. They grow loader as Phoenix fades away and he arrives at a new city. One bigger and more elegant than any city he had ever seen. Swiftly gliding over the strange place he heads towards the dawn at the end of the night. The voices in his head are almost a roaring blur. One last echoing voice still rings in his ears as he plunges into the blinding light.
“Fight the darkness boy, fight it hard …” Then before everything trailed off into a hot white glow, and then before the voice faded like the boy’s vision. “You can’t afford to lose…”

    chapter four:

A small ray of sunlight crept through the curtains and crawled across the floor. It shone a small spot of sunshine on a hand. A hand holding a pistol. A silver-plated .45 mod pistol to be exact. Both lay there on the floor aside Nelson. He was sprawled out, fully clothed, on the carpet next to the wall in the condo. Once in a while his eyes give a sharp twitch and his hands spasm, but still he rests there on the floor. Murmurs too come from his lips as his eyes shake.
As the sun climbs ever higher into the clear Los Angeles sky, more streaks of light penetrate the curtains of his room. One such ray brightly crosses over one of Nelson’s closed eyes. Both burst open suddenly. Nelson shakes it off before rolling over on the carpet, and drifting away again.
    'The darkness…'

    chapter five:

The office is sullenly dark, but small red lights glow dully from the side walls. Three shadowy suited men stand before a large ebony desk. The figure behind it is covered completely in shadow. He speaks to the others in a low raspy voice. Ancient sounding.
“So tell me, my best of the best. What do we actually know about the Phoenix incident? I mean it has been almost a week, correct.” The figure asked.
The others in the room looked at one another uncertainly, until finally one stepped forward and spoke up.
“We, uh, we… have confirmed reports of the human boy who interfered with the fight against the SWAT team. Apparently he’s the one who blew up our squad and the entire damn parking garage too. Lost us the whole squad and some equipment …”
“Yes, yes. I know this well you fool! The media knows all this too.” Then the dark figure sighed, leaned back and struck his fist against the back wall. Hard. The wall shuddered from the blow and the men backed up a bit nervously. “What, pray tell, can you tell me about this boy? This boy who bested an entire squad of you. This boy has obvious knowledge about who we are and what we do. And he has been pulling stunts like this for months! Now he’s disappeared?” He stood up; the low lights illuminated a craggy stern face. “What pray tell, can you tell me about him?” With that he slammed down a surveillance photo of Adam in the car garage on the desk.
