Three weeks later I was on a plane to Costa Rica to pick up Gary. He was supposed to finish up this project of his. It was supposed to revolutionize the way we think about dinosaurs. You see he was recently working with a paleontologist from Colorado. He’s sure birds evolved from dinosaurs so they were there to thoroughly study them and their habits first hand. We were going to meet him there at the airport.
When we got there, the women at the counter came up to us. “He left a note for you.” The women handed me a note that read:

Hey team sorry I couldn’t make it I have a little situation in the Brazil, no, not a quick vacation. I’ve arranged to have a plane fly you to here at around six o’ clock tonight. Until then have a good time.

    Sincerely,
    Gary Cornell

“Well it looks like we have the day off.” I stated. I then handed the note to Carry who read it out loud. Each of the team members looked really stunned. Why would he just take off like this? I mean what could be so important that he leaves us in Costa Rica alone without even telling us what he’s doing?
“I wonder what he’s up to? I mean, its like he just forgets us here.” Carry said.
“Don’t worry, I’ll find out what he’s doing sooner or later. But until then lets sit back and relax.”

The calm serenity of the beach calmed and soothed me. On the other hand maybe I should be out wind surfing with Brian. But that’s just not for me Carry decided to go bird watching with a local tour group which she obviously knew more than the tour guide about birds. Enrique and Cooper went on a nature hike. They couldn’t find anything better to do, and they’re too old to be wind surfing. So there I was just sitting there on the beach. I was more or less planning my next move.
Things were not going to plan. We couldn’t find Cornell, we were a day behind schedule which meant one less day for us to complete the job, and the airdrops where supposed to happen today and since were not there God knows what will happen to them. Panthers and jaguars have not been unheard of by going into campsites and eating food if they’re hungry.
Just then Carry walked up behind me. She had that sort of “I’m really bored so what’s up with you” face on she sometimes gets.
“I take it you didn’t get paid for being tour guide for the day.” I said.
“You hit the nail on the head with that one.”
“Well look on the bright side it’s almost six o’ clock and then we leave for Brazil”
“Yeah but will we meet Gary there?”
“Who knows?” Just then my cell phone rang. “Wait a second Carry, I got a call.”
“Hello, Rob speaking what can I do for you?”
“Ah Mr. Walters I see we have missed each other. Did the woman at the front desk give you my note?”
“Yeah were all just about ready to leave here.”
“Good, good well I’ll meet you there at your campsite this evening I’m already in brazil now, look for the place of the airdrop. Shall we make camp there?”
“Okay. Just one more question: how did you get my cell phone number?”
“Your boss, Mr. Myers gave it too me.”
“Thanks we will catch up to you there.”
He hung up the phone. So did I. I had a real bad feeling about this guy. It was almost as if I knew he was going to cause us problems sooner or later, deadly problems. I thought it would be best if I called the boss. I picked up the cell phone once again and hit the memory button. Before I could press seven Carry stopped me.
“Who was that and who are you calling now?” She demanded of me.
“ Believe it or not that was Cornell. I’m getting bad vibes from him. He’s talking like this whole thing was no big deal. And I’m calling the big guy seeing what he has to say about all this, but I should’ve done it sooner.”
“I’m getting bad vibes about him too and I didn’t even talk to him. But what sort of person would just leave with a seconds notice?”
I pressed seven. “Shush it’s ringing.” After about two or three rings Myers answered.
    “Hello who’s speaking?”
    “This is Rob.”
“Oh, hey Walters how’s the field trip coming along?”
“You have no idea…oh by the way did you give Cornell my cell phone number?”
    “No…why do you ask?”

The roar off the plane was deafening. We were about a mile up in the air. The boss was not happy with my report. He thought I was lying but after a while we came around. Everyone was sort or quiet on the plane except for Carry and Enrique, who were whispering to each other. Talking about politics or something like that. Brian was sleeping, probably wiped from all that windsurfing and playing cards with me till eleven o’ clock. Cooper was just flying the plane of course.
“One hour guys.” He yelled from the cockpit.
    “Gotcha” I yelled back.
    “What?!?” Brian had obviously awoken.
“We got one hour till we get to Brazil. Don’t fall asleep again because I was going to wake you up in fifteen minuets anyway.”
    “Okay…whatever. Hey Rob?”
    “Yeah, what is it?”
    “What’s Brazil like?”
“Well…I haven’t been there since I was a little kid so I don’t remember. I do most of my work at O.R.C., so I guess we will both find out.

    “Were here!”
“Finally, oh man, that was a long flight.” Brian said
“Tell me about it.” I replied.
We each stepped off the plane one by one. I was last just as I was about to Copper grabbed me by the arm.
“Hey Walters, this Cornell guy sounds like a real shady character I wouldn’t trust him if I were you, and if you need any help call me and I’ll be there, okay?
    “Thanks man, I appreciate it.”
    “Anytime. Good luck.”
“I’ll be needing it trust me”
The plane then took off into the night sky. I looked at my watch I should’ve said mourning sky it was getting late and we needed somewhere to stay. I headed inside the airport and caught up with the others. They’re standing in front of us, was, Gary Cornell.
“Nice to meet you gentlemen, and Miss. White of course. So lets go to our hotel and tomorrow. Then we can get started on our little bird project.”
