    Chapter 8

As Ian walked along, he searched for his companions.
After a while, he came across a huge field. Inside, were almost 40 Maiasura nests, each about 25 feet away from each other. These ‘gentle Mother’ dinosaurs were mostly friendly, and probably wouldn’t attack him.
He walked up to one of the nests and peered inside. There were about 25 grape fruit-sized eggs inside. The mother was nearby, gathering some leaves.
Ian decided to search for the others, but stay close to the herd for safety.

    30 Minutes later

Billy and Cassie had found some human footprints, and were following them. They were leading downriver, and were sticking close to the river. However, they were looking for two people, but had only found one set of footprints.
They soon followed the footprints to a vast field filled with Maiasaura nests. The large dinosaurs were either grazing or tending to their nests.
They were following the prints to the edge of the forest when Ian called them.
    “Cassie! Billy!” he yelled.
“Ian!” Cassie cried, obviously overjoyed to see him.
“I’m glad I found you,” Ian said, “Where’s Douglas?”
“We couldn’t find him, so we figured he was with you,” said Billy.
“No, he’s not here, but we have to look for him.” Ian replied.
“We can’t, the plane’s going to be here in three hours.” Said Billy.
“I know. We’ll have to search quickly then.” Said Ian.
The three of them set off into the jungle, searching for Douglas. The proceeded cautiously, aware of the dangers ahead.

The hybrid looked down at the footprints at the edge of the river. The prints were human, and belonged to the prey it had lost earlier.
They hybrid was smart, smarter than almost all the dinosaurs.
    It hated being outsmarted.
    Especially by a helpless human.
It looked at the prints once more, and with an eerie cry, summoned the other pack members. He was the Alpha Male, and was in charge if the others. They assembled into hunting formation, and began to follow the path of the prints.
It wouldn’t let its prey escape again.

“C’mon, we have to get going,” said Billy urgently. According to his watch, they had less than an hour left until the plane came. What worried him even more was that there were nasty-looking storm clouds gathering on the horizon. The distant rumble of thunder and a quick flash of lightning were visible from the hill they were standing on top of.
“Just 30 more minutes,” said Cassie.
“You said that 30 minutes ago!!!” Billy replied, “We have less than an hour before that plane comes! If we don’t catch that plane, we’ll never get off this island!!! And I have no intention of staying here longer than I have to!!!”
    “Billy!” said Cassie, “Shut up.”
Billy glared art her and sat down on a log, shaking his head angrily.
“We have to keep an eye out for the plane,” said Ian.
“Well, what does it look like?” Cassie asked.
“It would probably have the BioSyn logo on it,” replied Ian.
“Oh, like the one that passed ten minutes ago?” she said.
“What!?” both Ian and Billy cried.
“Just kidding.” She said and started giggling hysterically.
“Jesus! Don’t scare us like that!” Said Billy, “This is no time for a joke!”
Cassie’s giggles died down. “Okay,” she said seriously this time. “What time is it?”
“11:15. We have 45 minutes left.” Answered Billy.
“You’re right. We should get going,” she replied. She then glanced up to the sky and saw the storm clouds overhead. “Looks like there’s a storm coming,”
Ian glanced up and saw the clouds too. “Yeah,” he replied.
So, they kept going. After about ten feet, it started raining heavily. The raindrops pounded on them, and lightning flashed overhead. Thunder boomed not far in the distance.
“The plane can’t fly in this weather,” yelled Ian over the storm, “It would have to wait until the storm passes!”
    “Dang!” yelled Cassie.
“Let’s go back to the field,” said Billy, “It might be safe there!”
“Good idea!” yelled Cassie, and the three of them started back in the direction they had come from.
Not far from the field, they heard and eerie call over the wind. It was the hybrid. Actually, it sounded like a whole pack of hybrids
Ian suddenly realized with a jolt of fear what was happening. They were being hunted by the hybrids.
He looked over to the others, and said, “They’re hunting us! We have to get to the field!”
The three of them ran as quickly as they could back into the field of Maiasaura. As they reached the center of the field, five hybrids ran out of the forest after them. In the lead was the Alpha male.
The rain continued pouring down, and it was getting difficult to see. To make things worse, the water was forming slippery pools of mud that could easily be slipped on. Little rivers of water trickled down the hillsides.
They were soon across the field and were on the edge of the jungle. As they ran in, Ian spotted a climbable tree.
“Up the tree!” he yelled, and they began to climb it.
He had forgotten that the hybrids could climb.
Just as they reached the uppermost branch, the hybrids appeared underneath them.
Then, with a growl, the alpha hybrid started climbing the tree. The three of them were trapped.
The hybrid was climbing quickly, and was almost up to their branch. Ian, Cassie, and Billy had no choice but to back up toward the end of the branch. The branch began to creak under their weight.
They hybrid was now on their level, and had stepped onto the branch, which began creaking louder and started to crack. There was no way the branch could hold all of them for very long.
Snarling menacingly, the hybrid continued advancing toward them. The branch started breaking away from the tree. The loud creaks and cracks must have startled it, because it then started backing away.
Cassie, who had been the closest to the end of the branch, looked around her for any way of escaping. Soon, she spotted a thick-looking tree branch a couple of feet away from her. She might be able to make it if she jumped. The branch continued to crack, and she saw she had no choice. If she fell she would certainly be eaten by the hybrids.
So, she leaped off the end of the branch………..and landed with a thud on the other tree. She was safe for now, but she still needed to rescue the other two.
“Ian! Billy!” she called, and they looked at her.
“Jump!!!” she yelled. They both nodded and approached the end of the branch. First, Billy jumped across, and landed in front of her.
When the hybrid realized its prey was escaping again, it began stepping toward Ian. Just as it was about to grab him, Ian jumped to the other tree. The hybrid was about to jump as well, when the tree branch broke away and fell 20 feet to the ground below.
However, it was still alive. With a malicious growl, it started moving toward the tree.
When Ian realized the hybrids were coming, he knew they had to get down. He urgently told the others, and all three of them jumped down to the muddy ground. As fast as they could, they took off running into the jungle, the hybrids not far behind.
They soon came to another complex. As they approached the front door, the passed overturned cars and smashed trucks.
Once at the heavy metal doors, they yanked them open and ran inside. Closing the doors behind them, they fastened the many locks on the door. It looked like they had been designed to keep things out-or in.
They stepped back as the hybrids rammed the doors trying to get in. The doors looked strong enough to resist the blows of the hybrids, and the group sighed in relief.
All three of them were soaking wet, tired, and cold. The temperature had dropped since the storm, and their wet clothing only made things worse.
The building they were in was completely dark, and they had no flashlight, so they couldn’t explore the rooms. Everybody was too tired to explore anyway.
They could hear the crash of thunder, and the flashes of lightning lit up the room every few seconds. The sound of the rain pounding on the roof was so loud it sounded like it was raining rocks. There was no way a plane could fly in this weather.

The only thing left to do now was wait.
