    Chapter 3

"Billy! Cassie!" yelled Ian. The group was walking through the muddy forest, searching for their missing companions. They had been searching for almost an hour now, and had turned up with nothing.
“Dr. Malcolm, I don’t think that’s a very good idea,” said Dr. Regan, “There might still be a t-rex in the area, and we don’t want it to attack us.”
“I’ve been yelling for the past hour. I’m sure it heard us. If it wanted to attack us, it would’ve already.” Ian replied.
“They’re probably dead already,” Dr. Regan continued.
“No, they’re not.” Said Ian with certainty in his voice. However, he was not as certain as he sounded. They might have escaped the t-rex, but there were raptors, pteranadons, and a Spinosaurus. The thought of the raptors sent a chill down his spine. According to Grant, the raptors here were super-smart killing machines that were able to communicate with each other. They could take down this group right now, and we would all be dead before we knew it, he thought.
The group continued heading north, the direction Billy and Cassie had ran. As they were hiking along, Ian heard a weird moaning sound almost 15 feet away from them. His first thought was raptors, so he told everyone to get in a tree. But then he heard the noise again. It sounded nothing like a raptor. In fact, it sounded human!
He jumped down from the tree he was in, and slowly approached the area. He then heard it again. It was definitely human. He ran over, and found Cassie on the ground, just regaining consciousness.
    “Cassie!” he cried, surprised.
“Ugh. What happened?” she asked groggily.
“You must have tripped and hit your head on something,” he replied, seeing the nasty-looking scrape on her head, “Where’s Billy?”
“I don’t know,” she replied, and then stood up. “We have to find him.”
“I know. Dr. Grant is going to kill me if we don’t.” Ian said.
Just then, Nealson, Douglas, and Regan came running up.
    “Everything okay?” asked Douglas.
“Yeah,” said Ian. Then, seeing that the sky was beginning to darken, he turned to them, “We better set up camp. It’s starting to get dark.”
“Good idea,” said Cassie, and went to busy herself with starting a fire.

Billy looked up at the darkening sky. He was still up in the tree, afraid that a raptor might attack. He knew he would have to come down eventually, though. He had no food or water. The key to his survival was the radio. Unfortunately, nobody remembered to turn their radios ON. Yeah, we thought we had all of this planned out, he thought angrily. He was starting to deeply regret his decision on coming back.

    The Next Day

Cassie woke up to someone screaming. She then heard a vicious snarl. It was a raptor. And the screams belonged to Nealson.
As quietly as she could, she crawled up to the opening of her tent. Cautiously, she peered out.
About two or three raptors were at their campsite. One was sniffing Ian’s tent, and two were feasting on Nealson.
“Oh my God,” she said quietly. She was definitely not used to seeing her team member being ripped to shreds by a velociraptor. She had to get out. Slowly, she crawled out of the back door of her tent. Then, spotting a tree, she climbed it as fast as she could. Once in relative safety, she tried to find a way to save the others.
Suddenly, she had an idea. Turning on her radio, she switched it to FM. Spanish music came on, and she turned up the volume. She then threw the radio as far as she could, trying to get the raptors away from the camp. As soon as the radio landed in the bushes, the raptors went after it.
“Yes!” she said, and then jumped down from the tree. Running to the other tents, she gathered the others and they escaped.

Billy peered down at the ground from his tree. Nothing moved, so he jumped down. The tree he had been hiding in was located on the edge of a field, and above the field, pteranadons circled in flocks. Trying to avoid a conflict with the pteranadons, he stayed inside the forest, where he at least had cover.
Suddenly, he heard a barking noise about 40 feet in front of him. It was a raptor. He then heard another barking noise about 30 feet behind him. The raptors were surrounding him. He wasn’t able to spot a climbable tree any where near him.
The only place to go now was into the open field with pteranadons overhead. It was the only chance he had.
As he ran into the field, the pteranadons cawed loudly. Twenty feet behind him, two raptors broke out of the forest, running at an extremely fast speed. Billy knew he wouldn’t make it to the other side of the field in time. He knew that the only way he was going to survive this was if a miracle occurred.
Suddenly, a pteranadons swooped down, lifting him off the ground just as the raptor pounced. Its jagged teeth missed him by barely a millimeter. He was safe from the raptors, but he now had to escape the pteranadons.
The pteranadons had already flown over the field, and was now flying over some wet marshland. Reaching into his pocket, Billy withdrew a pocketknife, and jammed it into the pteranadons leg. With a screech, it dropped him into the muddy water below.
With a giant splash, he landed in the mucky, muddy, thick water. The pteranadon flew away, but the raptors came running up to the swamp. Billy tried to swim to the other side, but the water was extremely thick, and hard to move in. The raptors stopped at the edge, but did not go any further. They seemed hesitant to jump into the water. Then, with a bark, they departed into the jungle. When he crawled out of the water, he limped over to the nearest tree and climbed it.

As Cassie and the others walked a little further, they came across a large field. The field seemed completely empty.
“Hey guys, looked what I found!” yelled Douglas, who was twenty feet away.
All four of them ran over to him. He was kneeling on the ground in front of a set of footprints. Some were human footprints, the others were raptor prints.
A chill went down Cassie’s spine. It looked as if someone was being chased by the raptors.
“Let’s follow them and see where they go,” said Regan, and everyone agreed. The prints went across the field, but halfway through, the human prints suddenly ended.
“Look how the prints just end, but the raptor prints keep going,” said Ian, “It’s like a pteranadon came down and picked up whoever these prints belong to.”
“There’s only one other person on this island besides us, and that’s Billy,” said Cassie. “Maybe we can follow the raptor prints to find him.”
    “Yeah,” Ian agreed.
They followed the prints to a swamp. On the ground, they found a pocketknife. The raptor prints ended here.
    “Billy!” called Cassie.
    “Over here!” came a reply.
All five of them ran over to where they heard his call. Then Billy jumped out of a tree. He was pale and bloody and covered head to toe with mud.
“What happened?” asked Cassie, seeing all the mud.
“Well, uh, there were the raptors, and then the pteranadons came and carried me off, but I had a knife, and then they dropped me-“
“How high up were you?” asked Cassie. She once worked as a nurse, and she had seen what falling from high up could do to someone.
    “About 50 feet.” He replied.
“Whoa, that’s pretty high,” said Douglas.
    “Are you hurt?” asked Cassie.
“Not really…” he said, but Cassie saw he didn’t look too well. “We have to get out of here. The raptors might still be around.”
“He’s right,” said Ian, “Lets go.”
