    ~ CHAPTER 9 ~

    A Ruined Hope

Allison and Savanna's father, Martin, was desperately trying to drive in that weather. The roads were empty except for his car and a couple snowploughs, which were off to the side.
As he drove, his car skidded, almost going off the road every minute.
He finally pulled his car over and parked outside a store and got out of his car and, through the snow and wind, ran inside the store.

The store that Martin had ran into was a liquor store. The entire store was empty of people except for the owner, Ted.
Martin walked over to a freezer and took out a few cases of beer, holding on to one in each hand, then had another case under his arms, and walked up to the counter with them, laying them on the counter, causing some of them to lightly bang into each other.
"Hey, Marty." Ted greeted. "You're here early today. Didn’t think anyone would be around today.”
"Got out of work early. The storm, you know. "
"That's a lot of beer!" Ted exclaimed, eyes wide. “Having some kind of party?”
"I'm stocking up. Just in case the storm continues like this and I get snowed in. You know what I say. A drink a day keeps the Grim Reaper away!"
"Ha ha" Ted managed a weak laugh at the old saying. Ted thought the saying was stupid, because if anything, a drink a day brought the Grim Reaper your way. Ted never actually drank, except for a little bit of wine on special occasions. He only worked there because his brother had owned the place when he was a kid and needed a job. He had just got attached to the store, so when his brother left, he was put in charge of it.
Ted gave Martin his beer and change.
"Take care, Ted." Martin said. "Don't stay here too long, the roads are getting worse every minute."
"I won't. Take care, man." Martin and Ted lightly banged their fists together, and then Martin pocketed his change and took the beer and left, going back outside.

A few minutes later, Martin was driving down the road, on his way home. Lets see if I can get some news. He turned on the radio and heard that all the schools were closed down and the students were sent home.
"Looks like I can spent some quality time with Allison and Savanna." Marty said. "They should be home by now." he thought that he never spends a lot of time with his kids, but never blamed himself for it, though the rest of his family did. If he wasn’t drunk all the time, then maybe his kids wouldn’t mind spending time with him.

At Allison and Savanna's house, they're mother, Connie, was in the kitchen making dinner, when Marty got home. She looked out the window and saw that it was starting to get dark outside.
"Hey, Honey!" Martin called out as he walked in the house. "Where's Allison and Savanna?"
"They haven't come home yet. probably went to a friend's house or something." Connie answered. “Our house was probably too far for them to walk to in this weather.”
"Oh like hell it is! I just drove across town in this.”
“Well they’re not trying to get themselves killed!” Connie raised her voice.
Martin seemed unexpected of this and decided to accept his wife’s idea. “Well they should have at least called."
"They're big kids now. They know how to take care of themselves."
Martin decided not to argue, knowing it was pointless. "I'm going to crash in front of the TV. Want a beer?"
"You know I don't drink. I hate it when you do because you get violent and abusive when you get drunk."
"Ha. I'm sure I do, honey." He said sarcastically as he went into the living room, sat down, opened a beer, and turned on the TV.
Connie really did hate it when he got drunk. Once she suggested that he quit, and he nearly killed her. He punched her a couple of times, and broke the coffee table. That was two years earlier, and she never suggested it since. But no matter what, she refused to drink, especially with her husband around. She didn’t want to be a hypocrite like her mother was.
She turned back to continue making dinner.

Outside the school, Mike was running by, when he heard the bell go off. It was hard to hear because the wind was so loud in his ears, but since he was right next to the school, he heard it
There's someone in the school! They must be stuck or something! Through great trouble because of the snow and wind, he reached inside his mother’s purse and retrieved a small access card.
He dropped his mom’s purse in the snow as he ran through the snow over to the main doors. On his way there, he looked to the side, mostly to stop the snow from getting in his eyes, and he saw that the escape ladder was cut half way up.
He soon got to the main doors and stuck the card in a slot off to the side, and a minute later, there was a soft click and he pulled open the door with ease and walked inside the much warmer and calmer school, allowing the door to close and click shut behind him. After all, if people were stuck in the school, he could just use the card to get them out.
"Man, why are the lights off in here?" he asked out loud to no one. “Is the power out or something?”
He started walking down the hall, heading towards the direction of the office. After all, in order to ring the bell, it had to be done from there, so whoever was stuck in the school, was there.
Suddenly he saw Grim Reaper step right in front of him from around a corner, but he was facing the other way, walking the same way as Mike.
Oh crap! That's the same guy in my dream! Mike turned down the hallway that Grim Reaper had come from, and quietly ran, finding the closest set of stairs and running up them, all the way to the forth floor.
As he ran, he thought to himself about how all of this couldn’t be good. First he had a dream about a guy dressed as Grim Reaper, and then the next day, the power goes out in school and people get trapped in with that Grim Reaper guy going around. None of this could be good.
He ran down another hall, his footsteps getting a bit louder now that he knew the person wasn’t around, and he turned a corner and stopped dead in his tracks.
He gazed into a pool room. There was a sauna over to the side, a hot tub close to that, and a huge swimming pool covering most of the floor.
He was about to turn to leave, but he felt powerful hands grab him from behind, and next thing he knew, he was flung into the pool.
Mike landed with a huge splash as he went in, arms flailing. He surfaced and coughed out water, his wet clothes making him getting tired of swimming in one spot.
He looked up and saw Grim Reaper, holding his scythe, standing on the edge of the pool. Mike inhaled and dove back under, going to the bottom of the pool. After all, Grim Reaper wouldn’t follow him, would he?
He looked up and saw Grim Reaper just waiting there, looking down at him. He better leave soon because I need some air! Then he saw Grim Reaper put his scythe down and took out a jar from his cloak. He removed the lid and poured it’s contents into the pool. After all, who said Grim Reaper needed to swim to get at him?
The water started to bubble and steam, much like Mrs. Furankee’s face had done. Mike returned to the surface, screaming, his skin starting to melt and steam.
Grim Reaper picked up his scythe and turned and left, leaving the screaming and dying Mike behind to die slowly.
Mike's skin started bubbling and melting, just like the water, but he still tried to swim to the edge. He made it and climbed out of the pool and slowly and painfully, walked out of the room.
He had to make it to the office. He had to warn whoever was in the school about Grim Reaper. So they wouldn’t befall the same fate as him. Little did he know, everyone else already knew about Grim Reaper.

In the office, Mr. Johnson was waiting impatiently. "Where the hell is Winegrad? My nose hurts! And where's those two kids? I'm starving!"
"Just calm down." Mr. Fink said. “It’s not all about ‘you’ you know!” He rang the bell again.
"Stop making that noise!" Mr. Johnson shouted. "I have a bad headache and no one's going to hear that stupid bell anyway. And even if they did, how are they supposed to get in? Wave their hands and say the magic words?"
"I'm not ready to give up." Mr. Fink stated, though his voice was low and uncertin.
Then they all heard someone banging on the office doors. Mr. Johnson looked up and saw that it was another student. Or at least what he thought was a student. He got up and let the student in, locking the door behind him. What he saw disgusted him more then anything he had ever seen, and almost everyone in the room had quietly shared that feeling.
This kid’s skin was all red and partly melted. "Who are you? What happened?" Mr. Johnson asked, still shocked at how the kid looked.
"My name’s Mike. This maniac dressed as the Grim Reaper attacked me!” Mike yelled. Tears would have came to his eyes, had he still had eyelids. “I heard the bell from outside and used my mom's access card to get in." His voice was greatly changed from what it used to sound like. Now it sounded like he was a handy-capped person in need of a teacher to teach him how to speak properly
Mr. Fink walked over and looked Mike dead in the eyes. "This access card, where is it?"
Mike poked around his pockets and dread dawned on his face. "Back when I was in the pool room, I must have dropped it!"
"The pool's far away!" Mrs. Wolfington announced, more or less complaining.
"We need that card!" Mr. Johnson said. "Unless we can get to the roof."
"No." Mike said. "I noticed that the ladder was cut, when I was walking by."
"Then we really need that card! It’s our only way out of here!"
Then Mike started convulsing and he fell over to the floor with a loud thump. He started coughing and as he did, a green liquid spewed up all over his face and onto the floor. Then he stopped moving.
Candice ran over and bent down. "No!" She started crying. "He's dead. Dead."
Grim Reaper claimed yet another innocent victim.

In another house, far from the school, two little kids were laying on the floor, their elbows on the floor, their heads in their hands, watching Pokemon on T.V.
"Mommy?" The little girl asked, turning around as their mother walked through the room.
    “Yes Honey?”
    "Where's daddy?"
"Yeah." The little boy agreed. "He said he'd be home around the same time that Pokemon came on and it's almost over!"
"I don't know." Mrs. Johnson answered. She sounded worried though her kids couldn’t tell. Her husband had always called whenever he was going to be late, even if it was just by five minutes. "Maybe the roads are blocked or something. Nothing to worry about." She said more to reassure herself, then the kids.
She went back into the kitchen and started washing the dishes as her two kids continued watching T.V.

Dirisha was at her house, talking on her phone with Andrea. “See told you I had a bad feeling.” Dirisha was saying.
“Well school was cancelled anyway, so your feeling proved to be worthless.”
“What if it wasn’t.” Dirisha asked. “What if something else happened. Maybe my feeling wasn’t for the snowstorm, but for something else.”
“Like what?” Andrea was starting to get annoyed with Dirisha over her ‘feeling’. It was just a dream. Would she get over it?
“I don’t know. Maybe there’s people stuck in the school and they need help getting out, and only we can do it, because we’re the only ones who know or something.”
“Dirisha, please. You sound like an idiot. Plus the worse snowstorm in the history of Heartfield is happening. It was just a dream. Nothing more.”
Dirisha sighed. “Yeah, I guess your right. Well I have to go.”
    “Ok bye.”
“Bye.” Dirisha hung up and went to get something to eat.

In the office of the school, Brad, Jesus, Leticia, Candice, Mr. Fink, and Mrs. Wolfington were all sitting across the room from Mr. Johnson, talking quietly.
"I've got more switchblades with me." Brad whispered. "We don't have to be his slaves anymore. We can take him down."
"No." Mrs. Wolfington disagreed. "I don't want anybody else dead."
"We don't have to kill him. Just take him down."
"Anything's better then just sitting here." Mr. Fink added.
    "I agree." Leticia spoke.
Candice agreed as well. "Me too."
"All right." Mrs. Wolfington said slowly, but gave in.
Brad issued out switchblades for everyone. Mr. Johnson had his back to the group, looking out the window in the door, watching for Grim Reaper.
Brad jumped him from behind, knocking him to the floor. Mr. Johnson rolled over and punched Brad, sending him back. Mr. Johnson started to stand when he saw a bunch of knifes pointed at him, inches from all sides of his face.
He reached over for his gun, but before he could, Leticia put her knife right up against the principal's throat.
"Don't move!" She shouted. As Mr. Johnson moved his hand back towards his body, Mr. Fink walked over and grabbed the gun, putting it in his belt.
"Now we have something better to use against this maniac besides little knifes." Mr. Fink said. He went over and unlocked the door. He walked out into the hall, followed closely by everyone else, except for Mr. Johnson who stayed.

Jeff and Allison were walking by the theatre.
"Should we check in there?" Jeff asked.
"No. She wouldn't be in there." Allison said. “She hates acting, plus she’d have no reason to be in there right now anyway.”
They walked by the theatre and pretty soon, they were walking by a bathroom. Allison pushed Jeff in with a giggle. Once they were in, she pinned him against the wall.
"Savanna's a big girl." Allison said in a sexy voice. "She can take care of herself." Then she paused. “As can I.” She continued to smile
They kissed wildly as they moved further into the bathroom. Pretty soon, they were taking their clothes off.

In the cafeteria, Edward and Jamie walked in, no dead body in sight, and no sign of any struggle. It was too dark for them to see the scratches on the wall, or the huge rips in the KFC counter side.
"What should we bring back?" Jamie asked.
"A little of everything I guess." Edward answered. Jamie headed for KFC and Edward went for Taco Bell, which were on the opposite ends of the store chain. They were going to start there, and meet in the middle at Pizza Hut.
They both got a couple of big brown bags for food and started putting food in them. After a few minutes, they each got to Pizza Hut and took a couple of pizza boxes each.
"Now we bring it all back." Edward informed her. They walked out of the cafeteria and down the halls, heading for the stairs so they could get back to the office.

In another hall, Brad, Jesus, Leticia, Candice, Mrs. Wolfington, and Mr. Fink were walking down a hall.
"We should split up." Brad suggested.
Leticia asked, "Why?" She really didn’t think so. As long as they were together, they wouldn’t be attacked by Grim Reaper.
"We need to find this guy and beat him right? Well if we split up, we can cover more ground, and if we're in small groups, he'll also come to us, so we’ll find him faster.”
"Sounds good to me." Mr. Fink said.
So Brad and Jesus walked one way, Mr. Fink, with the gun, and Mrs. Wolfington headed down another hall, and Candice and Leticia headed their own way.
Leticia still had a bad feeling about the splitting up, but there was nothing she could do about it now. All she could do was pray.

Brad and Jesus had reached the locker hall after a few minutes, and started walking down it, but soon stopped when they saw a giant puddle of blood on the floor, then when they looked up, they saw blood splattered across the closed lockers.
    “What happened here?” Jesus asked.
“Look!” Brad pointed. A looker right next to them had blood seeping out through a crack in the side.
Brad and Jesus looked at each other and Brad slowly moved to open it. When he did, the dead body of Ryan fell out and the two boys screamed and ran back down the hall, leaving the area behind.

Edward and Jamie reached the office and knocked on the door. No answer. Edward tried to open it, knowing it was useless, but to his surprise, it opened!
"It's unlocked." He announced with surprise. They slowly walked in and looked around, but didn't see anyone.
    "Where is everyone?" Edward asked.
"They must have left." Jamie answered. The question that suddenly soared through both their minds was Why did they leave? Did something happen?
They laid the food down on the main desk and started to look around the office for any hints or clues as to where the others were.
Edward opened and closed doors to different detention rooms, while Jamie went behind the main desk. Detention rooms were small rooms with a desk and a chair, and were completely sound proof. Basically, if you were really bad, you were sent to one of those.
Edward had two more detention rooms left to check, when he heard Jamie’s scream ring through the room. He turned and rushed over to her and saw what she screamed at _ Mike's dead body.
"They're all dead!" Jamie started freaking out.
"Pull it together!" Edward shook Jamie. "They're not all dead. Only Mike. The others seem to have gotten away." My God, not Mike. Edward thought in his head. If he saw another of his friends dead, he might loose it, and the only reason he didn’t loose it then, was to try and keep Jamie calm so she didn’t freak out and do something stupid.
They walked into Mr. Johnson's office, which was attached to the main office, looking to see if anyone was in there.
When they got in, they both gasped and tried their best not to scream. Mr. Johnson was sitting in his chair, a scythe dug into the top of his head, blood trickling down his face, a small puddle already on the floor.
Then Grim Reaper walked out from the back door to Mr. Johnson’s office, holding onto another scythe.
He started walking towards the two teens, who had both started screaming when Grim Reaper had walked in.
Edward and Jamie both turned and ran out of the office and down the hall, the killer walking fast after them.
Edward and Jamie had never ran so fast in their entire life, and Grim Reaper was only calmly walking fast after them. Did he know something they didn’t?
