    School Day Chapter 15

    ~ CHAPTER 15 ~

    Family Reunions

The swat team helped the kids out of the school. They climbed down ropes that were hanging out of the side of the school, where part of the wall was missing.
The students reached the ground and looked around frantically through the crowds of people, for their parents. They went their separate ways, pushing past observers and media people, who were trying to interview them. The students ignored the media however, too sad and too tired to bother with them. They just wanted to find their parents.
Soon, the parents pushed their way through the crowd as well, looking for their children. There were cops, trying to keep the media back, but they were having trouble.
"Edward? Edward?" Edward's Mom called out as she looked around. In a way, she hoped he was there, because then she’d have finally found him, but in a way, she hoped he wasn’t, because whatever happened inside that school, was a bad experience, and she knew that her son might need a shrink if the events were really bad, and she didn’t want to think of her son in a situation like that.
"Mom!" Edward shouted. Edward’s mom whipped around and saw her son pushing through the crowd to reach her. She ran over to him and hugged him harder then she ever did before.
“I was so worried about you!” Edward’s Mom said as they hugged, and for the first time, since he was 8 years old, he cried.
He looked down and saw his younger sister next to his mom, and he managed a weak smile as he released one arm from around his mom and put it around his younger sister, and he cried, not just for all his friends who died, but for being allowed to live, being allowed to see his mother and sister again.

"Allison? Savanna?" Connie called out from her spot. She felt a hand on her shoulder and spun around to face her husband, Martin. “Look, Connie. I’m sorry for ever having been abusive. I heard about what happened on the news when I woke up and I read your note and...”
“Let’s forget about all that for now.” Connie said. “We have to find our daughters. We have to know that they’re all right.” Then her and Martin turned, and as one, they called out for their daughters.
“Savanna? Allison?” They both called out, raising their voices each time they called out a name. Then they suddenly saw a couple of people get pushed out of the way and Allison ran through them and up to her parents. Both Connie and Martin felt their hearts sink when they saw that Savanna wasn’t behind Allison.
Allison hugged both her parents, crying. "Savanna didn't make.” She said in between sobs. “She didn't make it." They all hugged each other and cried together. As one family.

Candice had found her parents, and they were hugging and crying, just like all the others.
She opened her eyes as her head rested on her dad’s shoulder, and she saw Dillon doing the same thing with his parents, only his head was facing Candice’s, and they both managed a smile, almost to let the other person know that everything was going to be alright from now on.

Angela was walking away, down the street, away from the school. Her parents had kicked her out when she was younger, so she had no one to hug, and no shoulder to cry on. She fought back her tears as she walked away. She couldn’t afford to cry. Crying showed weakness.
As she walked away, a low layer of fog was present and she slowly faded away into the fog as she got further away.

There were lots of disappointed parents and families when they saw that no one else came out of the school and among these were Leticia’s parents and her sister, Megan They all collapsed on the ground together and started crying, hugging each other, knowing that something bad had happened to their children, or other family members that were inside the school.
For some families, it was a day to praise God, for others, it was a day of mourning.

Two adults and a girl of about 27 years old walked over, pushing through the crowd.
"Jeff? Where's Jeff?" The mother asked different people as they pushed their way through.
    "Jeff?" Jeff's father called out.
"Jeff, where are you?" Jeff's older sister also called out. They began to get worried, fearing the worst.
Allison, Candice, Edward, and Dillon all made eye contact with each other as they heard people shouting out Jeff’s name and they all nodded.
They pulled apart from their families, telling them that they’d be back in a minute, and as a group of friends, they walked towards Jeff’s family, not sure what to say.
So when they reached them, they didn’t say anything. They just reached up and took turns hugging each member.
When they were done, Edward was the first to speak. "We want you to know that Jeff died, trying to save us. And we wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for him. It’s because of him that we survived."
They all hugged and began to cry, and then the other families to the people who survived walked over to their children and Jeff’s family, and as one big group, all hugged each other.

A few days later, after everything had calmed down, Allison allowed Dillon to take her out for coffee up to The Long Road.
They were seated by a window seat, soft music playing from speakers that was close by. Dillon sipped on his coffee. “I was talking to Edward.” He said. “He said that he’s going to be going to Jeff, Jamie, and Mike’s funerals, and then try his best to get over the incident and get on with the rest of his life.”
Allison nodded as she drank some of her coffee. “I was talking to Candice. She said that She’d be trying to get on with her life too.” there was a moment of silence as they both drank some of their coffee. “What about Angela? Have you been talking to her?”
“No.” Dillon answered. “I haven’t seen or heard from her since we got out of the school. Once school starts up again, if we see her, we should talk to her.”
“What about you.” Allison asked. “What are you going to be doing?”
Dillon sighed. “I’m not really sure. I know that I’ll be moving to Nova Scotia to live with my mom. There’s no way I would still be able to live here after the events that happened. Too many bad memories.”
“I understand, even though I wish that you’d stay.”
“I will be for awhile yet. I’ll be going to the funerals, and in a couple of weeks, there’s going to be a memorial service held by the school and school board, and I’ll be going to that.”
Suddenly Allison broke down and started crying. “I miss Jeff.” She cried. “I miss all of them.”
Dillon moved out of his seat across from Allison, and moved next to her, hugging her. Allison turned her head and laid it on Dillon’s shoulder, crying.
After a few minutes, Allison looked up, wiping the tears from her eyes. “Wait a minute.”
    “What?”
“Didn’t Angela say her last name was Coates?”
    “Yeah, so?” Dillon asked.
“Grim Reaper’s real name was Curtis Coates. He died here, and she’s lived here her entire life.”
Both of them turned and looked out the window into the night, wondering if there was possibly a connection.
