    Primal Prey Chapter 7
    By Strider_Aragorn

    Chapter 7
    Isla sorna
Isla Sorna, 87 miles southwest of Isla Nublar, October 1993

Robert Thorne woke to water dripping on his face. He felt warmth below him, and inexplicable cold and damp above him. He lay spread-eagled on something warm. He finally opened his eyes.
Water was dripping from the jagged edges of the chopper’s windshield, and he found that he was lying on the other three men. He then understood: he had been knocked out by the updraught of wind, then, without anyone to fly the helicopter, they had crashed on an island. They were hanging nose-up in a tree apparently. A light rain was falling outside, falling through the green foliage.
    Someone to his right groaned.

Dodgson groaned as he remembered what had happened. He was lying under someone’s leg. He tried to get up and hit his head. He lay back down.
Suddenly, something black fell from the control panel—Dodgson’s radio.
“Gimme that,” groaned Thorne. He picked it up off Jack’s chest, and switched it on. “Anyone? Hello, do you copy?” He fiddled with the dial, saying numbers to himself softly. “Hello, this is G1, come in HQ”
Static. Then, “Go ahead G1, we weren’t expecting you”
“We need help. Our chopper’s crashed on an island”
Thorne struggled to pull a map out of his pocket.
“We must be in the chain of islands near Isla Nublar somewhere”
Dodgson moved as Thorne began to rattle off latitude and longitude numbers, and uncovered Jack’s face. He stirred.
“Copy that,” Thorne was saying, “Rendezvous at west coast tomorrow”
Dodgson noticed his bag then, the strap caught on the pedals. He reached up to get it. Thorne moved to see if Johnn was all right. Yes, his pulse was strong. Thorne let water trickle onto his face. He awoke, looking cross-eyed.
Dodgson reached further. He stood up of the back of the chopper, reaching up with all his might. He steadied himself on one of the back chairs, straining to touch the bag. A soft thudding noise caught his attention. Everybody in the chopper froze. It came again, like a footfall of some description. After another few seconds, it came again, and again. It got louder. After six more of these thuds, they ceased. Outside the helicopter, Dodgson could hear bird noises and some scampering noises.
The water, which had pooled at the bottom of the helicopter, shook, concentric circles swirling across its interior.
Dodgson reached further. He climbed onto and sat on one of the seats. That way, he could just about reach the—
There was a gigantic roar, a bellow from a lost time, and a massive set of jaws appeared at the windshield. It had a box-like head, massive teeth and small yellow eyes.
Dodgson managed to grab the bag—just. The animal outside roared again and disappeared. Suddenly teeth punctured the side of the chopper, near to Dodgson’s right arm. Then, on the left, more teeth punched through the steel. With a thrill of horror, Dodgson realised that the animal outside had clamped its jaws around the nose of the helicopter.
Dodgson shouted out as he was lifted into the air—the animal was lifting the nose off of the chopper! As Dodgson’s bag was still attached to the pedals, it too got lifted, thus pulling Dodgson too. He squirmed and shouted, cursing and grunting, but in the end gave up. As the animal tore off the entire front of the helicopter, Dodgson let go of his bag and let himself fall onto the back of the chopper.
“That’s impossible! That’s a tyrannosaur out there!” shouted Dodgson, “And it’s got my bag, that big-”
Dodgson was cut off by a huge bang, and then the helicopter shuddered. It was falling—falling back to earth. Dodgson concluded that they had been hanging in a tree, suspended by branches or vines or—
Bang! The copter endured another bang, the roof denting in. The whole vehicle swayed, then the tyrannosaur outside pushed it outside. The men inside felt their world tilt crazily, as they were thrown onto the floor of the chopper. It was now laying on its belly. Through a window next to him, Jack observed the tyrannosaur’s legs move, muscles rippling, towards the rear of the vehicle.
“Everyone out!” shouted Jack. There was a mad scramble towards the front of the chopper, but as they ran they all fell, unable to balance as the helicopter shot forward. The men all fell back.
“Johnn, get your gun out!” ordered Thorne. He pulled out a handgun himself and loaded it.
“Got it,” replied Johnn, pulling out an AK-47 and producing a cartridge.
“Everybody move,” ordered Thorne, “Out the front of the chopper, now!” he shouted as he made for the absent nose of the helicopter. He reached the end of the metal and waited for everyone to reach him. Then he tensed to jump out, and—
Roar! The Tyrannosaurus’ head appeared, mouth wide, and thrust itself into the helicopter. The men stumbled back, away from the killer. The tyrannosaur’s body was now blocking the only escape route.
Johnn, who had finished loading his AK-47 machine gun, now fired a burst of bullets at the tyrannosaur, but in his terror he aimed wide. Sparks flew from the jagged metal around the tyrannosaur’s head, and one bullet hit the tyrannosaur’s undersized forearm. The animal didn’t even flinch.
Jack watched in transfixed horror as the Tyrannosaurus screamed and pushed its head further into the helicopter’s belly. Jack could smell the animal’s odour now, the horrid stench of decay. The tyrannosaur wormed its upper body into the frame of the copter now, bending the serrated edges of the metal back.
Thorne shouted out in frustration and kicked one of the windows of the copter. It smashed. He then pulled out a grenade from his belt. He ripped the pin out, released the handle and threw the explosive out the window. It landed a few metres away, on the edge of some dense foliage.
“Straight out, past that tree, and into the woods,” said Thorne, getting a grip on himself and resuming his professional manner. “In three … two … one”
There was an enormous bang and the helicopter rocked. Bits of tree and earth rained around the helicopter, Jack could see it through the window. The tyrannosaur headed over in that direction, pulling its head out of the vehicle to inspect the new noise. The ground shook with each step, but Thorne urged the men to run. Jack got up and ran under the tyrannosaur’s tail, past the big tree and plunged into the forest.
