    By Snake - Mark

    Chapter 6 – Retaliation

Man , once divided among race and religion, must combine forces with each other to survive in the changing world.

    ~Mark Laurence~

The usual rout Officer Penbry took was far from usual. In fact, the past few days have been filled with unusual events. The encounter with the dinosaurs, the death of Officer Christ, and the prophecies of the end of the human race were just the beginning of things, he knew it. Everything was happening so rapidly. Before his venture to work this morning, Penbry had heard of a debate going on throughout town about keeping the school closed. Keeping kids at home would have been a great idea, but for some unexplainable reason, the schools were left open.
“Shit!” Penbry snapped at himself, having forgot the most important thing he was to do today. “I still need to make a round at the high school.”
Hitting his breaks, he took a quick gaze at the empty streets and stores before spinning the car back around, taking him towards the high school. As he passed by businesses, he noticed all of them, including the local 7-11, were closed. Absolutely no cars were in the parking lots and no people walked the streets. This is too fricking earie. The world no longer seemed to belong to the human race. These dinosaurs were taking everything away from them, including their lives.
As the patrol came into eye sight of the school, Penbry slammed his foot on the breaks, spinning his car in the middle of the street. His eyes gazed at the site of a final velociraptor pulling its tiny body up and through a window. Without moving the patrol car, he pushed open the door and stepped out, his hand immediately finding his sidearm. I have to warn them inside.

The large raptor stepped up to the only door in the small bathroom, lowering its head a slight bit and pushing against the wooden obstruction. Snapping its head back, a scratchy grumble vibrated within the dinosaur’s throat. Again the raptor nudged at the door, the muscular legs of the creature pushing more force against it. A snarl escaped the raptor’s massive mouth as it stepped away from the exit causing a second raptor, only slightly smaller than its lead, to aide in their escape from the room. The two carnivores slammed the weight of their bodies against the fairly thin wood, a slight crack emitting from the top hinge of the door. Again the weight of the creatures came crashing against the door, separating the door from the hinge. With one more push of the raptors’ weight, the door collapsed to the ground, hitting the tiled floor with a loud crash. The leader of the herd stepped into the hallway with its snout raised to the air, immediately catching the scent of a nearby meal. Keeping its nose high, it dropped its jaw and several screeching yelps filled the school, echoing down the empty hallways.

Penbry pounded his fist hard against the glass door, hollering a warning of the raptors as he did so. Getting no response from anyone inside, he ran to the closest window to his right, his fist going straight to pounding against it. As he was about to yell his warning again, the window blinds flicked open, revealing a human eye peering at him. Penbry flashed his badge and pointed to the main entrance, mouthing the words “open it”. The blinds flicked closed again, making Penbry believe he understood him.
By the time Penbry had gone back to the main entrance, a well dressed middle-aged man was standing in between the two sets of doors. Standing firm, the man spoke loud enough for Penbry to hear.
“Let me see your badge again.”
Taking out his badge once more, Penbry kept his eyes on the man. “Officer Miles Penbry. The school is no longer safe. Those things have found a way inside.”
“Inside? That’s impossible. This school is as sealed up as a can of sardines.” The man snapped.
“Apparently you missed a window. Multi-colored, about four or five rooms down, it seemed.”
“Damnit!” The well dressed man pushed the school doors open, allowing Penbry entry. “I’m the principal of this school. Principal Walling.”
“Is there a way you can warn everyone?” Penbry asked passing the principal and entering the main hallway, his head scouting out each direction.
“All the classrooms are locked up all ready. We put the school in lockdown when those things were spotted outside. In fact… we have a violator of the lockdown rules in my office.” Walling pointed towards his office door and began to head towards it.
“You sure those classrooms are impenetrable?” Penbry asked, hesitantly moving along with Walling.
“Yeah, those things can’t bust through those doors.” Walling turned the handle to his office door slowly and gently pushed it open.
Penbry stood behind Walling, his eyes still shooting left and right, watching each side of the hallway carefully. As Penbry slipped into the small office slowly behind Walling, his vision was given the site of the teenager who stood so firm to his own beliefs, even if it meant public humiliation.

Mark was sitting alone, listening in on the conversation between the officer and the principal when the door knob suddenly jiggled. As the door began to open slowly, Mark jumped back into his seat and acted as if he were waiting there the whole time. A small smirk crossed his face when his eyes came to lie upon Officer Penbry.
“Officer, I never thought I’d see you in here.” Mark contemplated getting up to shake Penbry’s hand, but voted against it when Walling gave him a stern look for even speaking.
“Mr. LoProto, I suggest you keep your mouth shut.” Walling snapped.
Penbry rolled his eyes and kept his attention on Mark, who kept talking. “They’re inside, aren’t they? They found a way in?”
“A bathroom window was left open, but they are still contained in the bathroom.” Walling sighed, giving up on disciplining the student.
Mark’s eyes moved towards the office door. “Are you armed, Officer?”
“Yeah I’m armed. Why?” Penbry moved his hand to his sidearm slowly.
“These things are smart. They’ll find a way to their food.” Standing, Mark nodded towards the door. “We might as well kill them before they find us, wouldn’t you say?”
Penbry nodded. What was there to lose? His town was being infested with these things. As long as this group is herded into a small space, he may be able to take them down; and even if he failed, the likelihood that he would survive this whole ordeal was slim. So why not take a risk? Why not try to save a school full of students today?
The officer pushed the door open quickly, storming out of the office and into the hall, his gun held high. Spinning on the heals of his feet, he scanned the entire hallway, finding nothing but emptiness. The halls were completely quiet besides the nervous breathing of the two. The silence began to build up an insecure feeling; at least with noises they could track their prey better. As they moved down the desolate hallway, Mark kept his back to Penbry to watch for surprise attacks. The rubber of their shoes made slight squeaking noises as they moved along the linoleum floor, each squeak causing Penbry to halt in his place.
“This is rather bad.” Penbry whispered over his shoulder.
    “What is?”
“The squeaking. I don’t want those things to know we’re coming.”
“Just don’t let your guard down.”
Penbry took another step, this time the sound of rubber against linoleum sounded more like metal against glass. The two froze and stood silently to listen. The sound came again; a brief clicking followed by a small thump. The noise repeated itself, becoming less and less spread out in time. Following each thump, now, seemed to be the sound of air being briefly sucked into a small passage and then released again.
Penbry shook his head and rubbed his eyes as a shadow grew along the far wall of the hallway, a second shadow taking form along the floor itself. Before he could think about it, his gun was held in front of him, his trigger finger shaking only the slightest bit.
