    RED LIGHTNING

On the far edge of Australia, in the blazing desert, there was a small ranch used specifically to breed horses. Dave was one of the ranchers that took care of the horses, he had been working here for four years and he had never even imagined the things that are about to happen to him…

“Have you fed the horses yet?” yelled one of the other ranchers named Will. “Yeah, I did it” Dave replied. Dave was a hard worker; he had an admiration for horses, so that helped. But he was living a life of boredom, he wanted to move to Sydney, he loved that city.
At about 6:00 P.M. he and the other ranchers went back into the house to have some dinner. These workers were no strangers to each other, they had been friends since high school, and they wanted to start a business, which actually became kind of successful. But money was growing ever shorter these days; they had been discussing selling the ranch over several times but each time they agreed they wanted to stay. After they had finished dinner they went to sleep.
As Dave quietly looked at the ceiling of his house, he heard one of the horses scream in pain, then suddenly silence. He quickly ran out of bed to find out what was going on. As he left the house and ran over to the stables, he herd galloping, but it was outside of the stables. He opened the gate to the stable and ran over to what he saw. He pulled out his flashlight and was horrified at what his eyes were seeing. The horse had had its neck torn open, and entrails were lying on the ground. “What’s going on!” Jim said as he ran out of the house. “Look… there are bite marks all over the body, it must have some sort of animal.” Dave explained to Jim. “What could have done this?” Jim asked. “I have no idea, but the bite marks are somewhat similar to horse bite marks.” Dave replied. “You think one of them is rabid?” “I don’t know, but I would guess not, when something is rabid it bites, not eats, this horse was eaten”. “Should we tell the others?” Dave asked. “Let’s wait til’ morning”
    “Ok”…

As the sun rose up and the blazing heat once again spread through the land, the for friends went down to eat breakfast. As the sat at the table, Jim said, “Dave and I found something last night.” “Like what” “One of the horses was killed, some kind of creature ripped it’s throat out.” “You’re joking,” said Will. “No, I’m serious. The bite marks looked like horse’s, maybe one of em’ is rabid” Jim said. “I told you Jim. None of the horses have rabies. When an animal has rabies they don’t devour what their attacking.” “Maybe so, there is not many cases of horse rabies you know. Just to be safe, we should have a veterinarian come and do some tests.” “I agree” “good idea” “well, alright.”
As the Vet car pulled up along the long dirt road, a somewhat skinny man came out of the van. “Thanks for coming, we think one of our horses is rabid” “I get to it right away.” “Thank you doctor.”

    <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

“Well…” Dave asked the doctor. “None of your animals have any sign of rabies sir.” The doctor reported. “Oh…ok well…thanks for your time.” The veterinarian drove off in his van. “Well now what?” Jim asked. “One of us should get the shotgun and watch the horses overnight.” Dave replied. “I’ll watch em’” Will said. “Ok good”.
As the sun started to set Will grabbed a small, metal chair and sat down inside the stable. As the vast darkness fell across the land, will grabbed his water bottle and grabbed a quick sip of cold water…

    <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

It was about 2 A.M. in the morning, Will had trouble keeping his eyes open. Suddenly, a shadow appeared on the far, wooden wall. Will yawned, expecting it was just one of the horses. Then, the creature ran over to him very fast. He stood up and cocked the shotgun, but not fast enough. The creature jumped on top of him and started to repetitively bite him. He screamed in pain as the creature quickly devoured him.

Dave jumped out of his bed as he was startled by the blood-curling screams coming from the outside. “Wake up! Will is in trouble!” Dave yelled. The two others: Jim and Eric ran out of their bedrooms and followed Dave outside. “Will! Will!” Dave yelled, but there was no response. As they entered the stable, they found blood on the ground, and a bent shotgun but there was no body. “Hey guys! Look at this!” Jim yelled. The two others ran over to Jim to see what he was looking at. Another horse was eaten. “What do you think could have done this?” “I don’t know, but what ever it was it probably wants us next! We have to call for help.” “Good idea, Lets get back to the house.”
As the Dave, Jim, and Eric entered the house, the lights suddenly went out. “What’s going on?” Eric asked. Just then, they heard loud clattering sounds in the kitchen. A giant horse like creature silently stalked around the corner then it stared into the three boys eyes. It started to run towards them from the other end of the hall. “Upstairs! Run upstairs!” Dave commanded. They ran up the stairs with the creature still chasing them. As they made it to the top stair they ran down the hall and went into a room, then turned around while locking the door. “What the heck is that!? Jim yelled. All there of the boys jumped as it banged at the door. “Get something sharp!” Dave yelled. Jim picked up a large knife from the cabinet. And opened the door to slice the creature throat. He succeeded, the creature dropped to the ground dead. The three boys kneeled down to see what the creature was. It was a large, black horse. “I told you one had rabies!” Jim said. “No, wait” Dave said as he opened the horse’s mouth to see very sharp teeth. “There’s no way that rabies will do that, this horse is Carnivorous!” “We have to take the truck and leave right now!” “I agree.”
The Boys ran back down the stairs and opened the door to the outside as they ran like heck to the truck, Another one of those creatures came from behind the house and grabbed Jims neck with its powerful jaws. The creature ferociously snapping Jim’s neck instantly killed him. As Jim fell to the ground the creature started to eat him. “Run for the truck! Now!” Dave whispered. As they ran to the truck, the horse started to chase them. Dave and Eric quickly scurried into the car while locking the doors. They looked down and their relief quickly turned into fear when Dave said “Oh no…I left the keys in the house…”

This story is obviously fiction, but there really have been sightings of a new breed of carnivorious horse in Austrailia
