Halo: The 4 Arrows ch. 5

The flood were blown to pieces. But everyone knew that wouldn't stop them. The flood could regenerate most of they're parts, not fully, but enough to keep fighting. They would usually get weaker and smaller too. Skidami was afraid, he had studied the flood in battle school. He knew that if one of those things touched you, they would infest you and turn you into one of them. They had all been trained that if anyone was being infested, just to kill them so as not to deal with them later as an enemy. No body disagreed with this, since anyone would rather die by a bullet than a flood eating you alive.
"Ready Pulse cannons!" Shouted the platoon commander for that area of soldiers. The 6 cannons for that platoon focused in on the front line of flood. Pulse cannons and any other Pulse weapon were meant to kill the flood directly so they couldn't regenerate. This was done because the blasts would shoot inside the body of the flood, and deliver a pulse charge to their head, destroying the brain and the cells that controlled regeneration. Skidami and many other soldiers were given laser weapons. It could kill the flood just as well, but it took more work. Lasers weren't always the..cleanest, way to deal with flood. It melted through bodies usually. Making it especially easy for the flood to fall apart, sonce most of their bodies are mushy.
More fighters flew overhead and bombarded the flood, spreading them apart and causing chaos among them. "Fire!!" the platoon leader shouted. Pulse cannons could be heard firing over and over again. Flood were dying all over the barren fields. As soon as the flood were in range of laser weapons, they were ordered to fire too. Skidami fired his laser machine gun, or auto laser into the crowds of flood. The auto laser fired short mini bursts of laser fire. Just like bullets, but lasers instead. By now every soldier was firing some type of gun into the oncoming enemy. They were dropping like flies, but they just kept coming and coming. Skidami cut them down by hundreds easily every minute or so. "Cease FIRE!" Shouted the platoon commanders. The flood were retreating, what was left of them anyway. Cheers arose from the soldiers.
"Look!" someone shouted. "There's more!". He was right, out in the distance beyond the smoke, more flood assembling could be seen. Back in the base, the commander in charge of ground operations, Sodwak had an idea, "All aircraft fighters deploy now! I want that drop ship out of the sky!" 10 fighters were sent directly to the drop ship in the distance. 20 more were sent to the oncoming fleet of ships just entering the atmosphere.
Back in the bunkers Skidami could see the fighters flying over head, heading towards the drop ship. The drop ship started to rise quickly towards safety, but the 10 fighters were upon it too quickly. They all fired 2 pulse missiles. 20 missiles hit the drop ship at once. It started to explode from inside. It was falling towards the planet surface again. When it hit, the explosion was tremendous. The ground shook uncontrollably. The explosion wiped out a third of the oncoming flood. It didn't just blow them apart, but disintegrated them. The 10 fighters went up to join the other 20 fighters in fighting the drop ships that were just arriving. One of the drop ships seemed to be changing. It opened up in the middle, like...like...and then it hit Skidami. Like a loading bay! All of a sudden atleast 50 ships were shot straight out of the ship. They headed straight for the 30 fighter jets. They started to turn back, but the 50 little flood ships descended on top of them. A dog fight no one wanted to see was going on between the two armies. "Return to base! Return to base immediately!" Shouted Sodwak. The 30 fighters tried to split up to confuse the flood to make it easier for escape. But half of them were destroyed already. Not to mention atleast half of the flood fighters. All the ground soldiers could do was watch as fighter after fighter was shot down.The lasers were too inaccurate to pick off the flood from the ground. By the time all the flood ships were gone, only 8 fighter jets remained. They returned to base for repairs.
Sudwok was notified that more fighter jets were being sent in a fighter jet carrier. It would be 3 hours before they arrived though. "No... I hope we can hold off the ground army of flood for 3 hours." the flight commander of the fighter jets replied,"I hope so too sir.It'll hell out there."

Back in the bunker, every soldier was firing non stop, line after line of flood. Each time getting a little bit closer. "They're overwhelming us!" Screamed a panicked soldier. "Keep your head together cadet!" Shouted a Platoon leader. But the soldier was right. The flood were getting closer, every time they sent a new line, they gradually got nearer and nearer to the base. The flood were overwhelming the laser and pulse fire. It was getting so close that the soldiers could feel the laser heat when it hit them. They knew they'd have to stop firing auto guns soon. When the flood approached within 45 yards of the bunkers, the platoon leader shouted something that no body wanted to hear,"CHARGE!"
Every soldier was prepared for this, they all jumped out of the bunker in one motion, activating their laser and pulse blasters, and blast shields. They were firing as they ran closer and closer. As soon as they were up close, they got out they're Laser sythes. They were made for close range combat. Skidami was one of the first waves that hit them. He could see where his training was coming in handy. He wasn't prepared for the skills that came alive. His hands seemed to have a mind of their own. Slicing like mad, with lighting quick reflexes. He came upon a soldier that was being infested by flood. He knew what he had to do. He took out his laser pistol and shot the soldier, to make it quick. He kicked the flood away from the soldiers torn face. From what was left of the body, he knew it was the soldier he talked to on the ship. He tried not to think about it too much. But everything was happening so fast. All the killing around him. Skidami just ran through the crowds, swing away at everything, slaughtering the flood in groups. He was taken over by something he didn't want to become. The anger...so much death...and the pain...the pain...
