Halo: The 4 Arrows ch.9

It was total chaos. Pieces of insides were everwhere, from the flood and the ship itself. It was starting to explode inside out. "We don't have much-!" Buhg was cut off as his head blew apart from a laser blast in front of Skidami. Dront started to scream,"NOOOOO!NONONO! We're all gonna die aren't we?!" Rawu punched him in the face to shut him up. "Keep it together soldier!" he shouted. "We're gonna make it out alive!" Skidami signaled for them to hold their positions. He was thinking what to do next. How did I get into this? he thought. I never shoulda come here, 2 soldiers have lost their lives because of me. I'm not a leader. But then again, didn't they have all the objectives done except for the core? Maybe he could do this, just think ahead, stay cool and protect your soldiers. Skidami began to think about home, his old life, his family. He thought about running through the tonium fields, how the soft soil felt on his feet as a child. How much he loved his family, his home. His brother dying darkened his life a lot.
His brother had a heart disease. He was sick for 2 years, and then...gone. After that Skidami decided to make his life the best it could be. He hadn't planned on serving in the military, but his father was too old and the planet needed soldiers. So he volunteered. He joined when he was only 19, and when he went on his two year leave at 22, he married and had two children. He was 25 now, and his children would be 1 and 2. He couldn't wait to see them again. He'd make this mission worth finishing, for his family, his planet, and all the free races of the galaxies.
"Skidami! Skidami! Snap out of it! Let's go!!" yelled Rawu. Skidami jerked back to reality."Okay guys, let's get this over with. Gron, take care of any enemies and cover us." Gron replied with a nod as he took careful aim. When he fired the first shot, the rest of them ran quickly to the north door. Gron followed when he was done. When Qad finished getting the code on the door, he opened it. They rushed inside and made a sweep of the hallway. A flood caught by suprise was quickly shot down. "Uh, sir i'm picking up two large objects heading our way, and they don't appear to be flood. Too large." informed Toro. They all looked in the direction the objects were coming from. "100 meters, 75, 50, 25!" All of a sudden 2 beasts appeared out of thin air. They were huge, walked on four legs, had red eyes, and rows of razor ship teeth. They also had tails about 6 feet long with a circular blade on the end. One of the soldiers turned to run and one of the beasts shot out a spear like object from it's mouth. The spear entered his back and out the other side. He fell to the ground. Rawu turned to get him but Skidami held up his hand to stop him. "Don't make any sudden movements. They're Hyujuts. They are native to our planet, or were until they became extinct hundreds of years ago. I don't know how but they managed to capture some live ones. They are intimidated by fast movements or bright lights and flashes."
"Hand me a flash ." Toro took one out and handed it to Skidami. Skidami pulled the pin and dropped it. "Cover your eyes!" he shouted just as it discharged the light. The Hyujuts roared and reared back, blinded by the flash. "RUN!" shouted Rawu. They turned and headed for the core room. When the Hyujuts regained their vision, they ran full out towards them. Toro took a plasma out and threw it behind him. He looked back to see one of the Hyujuts actually reach out and eat it! It slowed down as the other one continued to pursue them. Toro saw the first Hyujut blow up into hundreds of pieces. "HaHa! Ate the wrong puppy food didn't ya?!" His laughter quicky stopped when the other one sped up suddenly and lept for him. "AHHHH!!!!" But right before it hit him, it's arm blew off. He turned back around to see Gron running and using his sniper at the same time! "Thanks! Nice shot!" said Toro thankfully. "No problem." replied Gron as he loaded another clip and finished off the rest of the wounded creature.
When they reached a large steel door they stopped. It had what looked like a warning lable on it, but in a different language. "This must be it" suggested Rawu. He pressed the code in and the door opened...
***Arrow Fleet***
"Somebody cover me! Cover-!" BOOOM! Fighters were dropping like flies on a bug zapper. There weren't many arrow ships left, but then again there weren't many flood either. One pilot in particular, Aqap Tan was the fleet leader. "Okay! Hytur, take your squad and flank them from below, Junter, i want a full scale blow from the right, and i'll take mine and come from head on. Let's do it guys..."
***Mother ship/Core room***
"I got a bad feeling about this" said Dront. "I know, me too." added Toro. "Almost like it was too easy..." Skidami was planting the first charge on the main pulse tube. The second one would go straight in the core pit. "Almost done...Got it!" exclaimed Skidami as he pulled the second charge out and headed for the pit. It was directly in the middle of the room. The core itself was enormous. Like a giant glowing green cylinder, with a pulse tube in the middle, and the pit at the bottom. The pit was a blue magma like substance. It was in a huge hole, when u looked over the edge of the pit, the blueness could be seen almost a mile down. Skidami started to arm the charge. CREEEEAKKK CRAAOKKKKK. Everyone stopped moving, they could feel the walls start to give in to the madness going on outside in space. "We better hurry this up Skidami." warned Gont. "I'm trying" he replied. "Okay it's done" But before he could press the arm button, the blast doors blew open in flame and flood poored into the room. "Everyone take cover!" Rawu yelled. The team got split up as some took different shelter. 4 were behind some crates, 4 were behind some barrels, and Skidami, Rawu, Toro, and Gont were behind 3 pillars. With the exception of Toro behind the Core cylinder. "This has to happen now!" yelled Gont who was extremely frustrated. "Where's the charge?" asked Skidami. "I got it" replied Rawu. "Hey! Toss me the charge! i can get to the pit from here and drop it in!" yelled Toro. Rawu threw it to Toro, but just as it flew in mid-air, a flood soldier threw a plasma straight at Toro, and it landed too close. It happened in slow motion, and Skidami saw it too late. "TORO NO!" he warned, Toro caught it, but at the same time the plasma went off...
The sound ripped through the large room, Skidami was knocked down from the force of heat coming from it. "Oh MY GOD!!!!" screamed Rawu. "NO!" "Ahhhhh..." Toro moaned. "He's still alive!" yelled Skidami. "I'm going for him!" Skidami ran over to Toro's position before anyone could stop him. Another explosion ripped through the air, but it was far enough away. Skidami was thrown through the air and passed Toro! He scrambled to his feet and dove behind the core just as lasers zipped his body by millimeters. "Uhggg..." Toro was half awake. "Toro! Toro, can you hear me??" asked Skidami. Toro's left leg was completely gone, and his right leg was gone up to his thigh. His left arm was half gone to the elbow, and he had third degree burns all over his body.
"Toro, i'm so sorry" said Skidami. I never should have let this happen. Toro coughed, and then spoke softly, "Skidami, Skidami, it's not your fault, you finish this mission for me, kill em all, every single one of them." Skidami replied, "I will..." Toro closed his eyes, but just when Skidami thought he was gone for good, he opened them once more, "Skidami, remember one thing, all soldiers get remembered in some way, it's how they die that gets remembered, so make it worth dying for. OKay?" then Toro closed his eyes for the last time...
Skidami put him down, and reached for the charge. He had to do it, not just for him now, but Toro. He threw a flash charge out and a smoke charge out too, when they went off, he made a dash for the pit. He Jumped for it just as a laser blew up a pillar where his head would have been. He landed next to the pit wall. He pressed the arm button and slowly stood up, holding the charge over the pit. When the smoke cleared, the flood caught sight of Skidami. They paused, they may be ugly, but they weren't stupid. They knew what he was doing, and they knew HE knew what he was doin. He dropped the charge, it was total silence, no one fired, no one talked. Just silence as they realized what was going to happen to them if they didn't leave right away. So they ran, because nobody wanted to be on the ship when that thing went off. "Let's go! NOW!" shouted Skidami to everyone. Everyone got up and joined Skidami in running towards the docking bay.
***Arrow Fleet***
"Give me some help over here! If I die, who's gonna get our boys home?!" yelled Zast, a Gontalite pilot. Immediately 4 or 5 fighters joined his side protecting him from oncoming fire. Even if it meant sacraficing their lives. "Okay thanks guys!" Zast pulled in to the docking bay and blew away several turrets wating for him to power down. "Come on hurry up!" he shouted when he saw the 11 commandos coming into the bay. Zast shot down a couple flood trying to pick them off. "Sorry guys, no hitch hikers today." He opened the ramp for them to get in. When they were all on board, Zast asked, "Where's the other 4?" Rawu was the one to answer, "They didn't make it." Zast got quiet, and then, "Sorry about your friends, but we gotta get outta here before this thing goes up in flames." The ship rose from the platform, and shot out of the docking bay. "This is Zast, I got the S.E.A.L.s" the pilot on the other end came back, "Okay! All ships pull out! pull out!" All of them tried to get into position for hyper jump. "10 Seconds until the charges go off!" shouted Skidami. "The pilot on the radio counted down, "..7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1-" The mother ship behind them rumbled for a second before erupting into a gigantic nuclear vacuum. Which would probably become a black hole. "No...we're too late...."
