JP: The Return Canyon Bridge Chap
    By Rexy!

    Canyon Bridge

Pushing it’s way through think foliage that had grown over the dirt road, the hummer cut through it like a razor. They drove for miles, passing broken down fences, dirt trails that lead into the jungle, and a small watering hole. The vast landscape was harsh. Unlike what they originally seen when they first came in 93’. They had docked at the most northern point of Nublar. They figured not many dinosaurs would roam that territory, due to the mountain range.

Rogers drove out of the jungle, and found themselves facing a large canyon. The only way across, was to cross a small bridge. It was old, rusted, and unstable. Billy got out of the hummer and stepped on the bridge. He put his whole body wait on the metal road, and it began to crack and shake. He quickly stepped off of it. The bridge couldn’t hold the weight of the Humvee. Billy turned back to the group that sat eagerly in the hummer.

“The Humvee can’t cross this bridge. It is unstable, and it will fall,” said Billy Brennan, he looked over the edge.

“How far of a drop?” asked Hunter Bowman. He sat in the vehicle, holding the rope and flashlights.

“Several hundred feet, and there is a river at the bottom. Not to mention jagged rocks,” replied Brennan. “We can cross by threes. Carry what’s important. It can’t hold much weigh-” Billy was cut off by a sound of terror that filled the forest. The sound of a on coming Tyrannosaurus Rex was approaching them. From inside the Humvee, Alan watched as the small rocks on the fertile ground vibrated.

“Get out of the vehicle! We have to cross the bridge! Get what you can carry!” shouted Grant. If the bridge couldn’t hold the hummer’s weight, it couldn’t hold the tyrannosaur’s weight either.

The group quickly exited the vehicle and began to grab as much supplies they could hold. Mac Davison grabbed the radios, as Tim and Hunter got the flares and flashlights, along with the rope. They began to cross the shaky bridge. They dashed across it, Mac made sure no radios was left and as he began to cross the bridge, the tyrannosaurus rex emerged from the jungle, it’s heart pound roar made the group cover their ears. As Mac kept running on the bridge, he noticed the bolts on both sides was giving out, due to his weight. Trying to get to safety he kept running toward the group. He was heavier than the others, and the bridge wasn’t going to last long.

    BOOM!

The entire bridge slanted downwards. Mac stumbled when this happened. What had happened? He looked back at his attacker, and the tyrannosaur had stomped the bridge with it’s foot. The appearance of the rex was unlike the others ones he had seen, it had brown strips running down it’s back, overlapping it’s dark green skin. The stomach was a light yellow, showing that it was a male.

The Bridge slanted even more, Mac let loose of the radios, they flipped and turned as they slid down the bridge, and then disappeared in the canyon. The rex is trying to kill me, and not even eat me! The more the tyrannosaur put weight on the bridge, Mac was sliding close to it. He was trying to eat me!

“Throw the rope down!” shouted Nick Van Owen, as he handed the box with the utility rope inside it. Rogers tossed the rope over on the bride, too short. Maybe if someone went down…

Tim grabbed the rope, Thorne tossed another rope down the bridge, he also began to lower himself downward to the helpless prey of the tyrannosaur. Tim managed to slowly make his way closer to Mac. Tim grabbed Mac’s hand and tightly held on to it. Thorne went lower, helping him pull Mac up, suddenly the rope slacked and Mac was left into the air by the tyrannosaur. He screamed in pain and horror as the rex began to devour him.

“Get up the rope!” shouted Tim Murphy as he quickly began to climb back up the bridge. He had failed to save one of the trackers. Grant and Nick pulled him up.

“Well that didn’t work as planned,” stated Thorne as he got up on the ground. He dusted himself off, and turned to the tyrannosaur. The human blood dripped from it’s huge jaws. Two members was already dead.

“You tried,” began Emily. She knew they couldn’t help him. He was too close to the carnivore.

“We was too late,” replied Tim Murphy.

The tyrannosaur roared once again, and turned to the Humvee. Knowing that the object was new to it’s territory, the rex began to nudge it. With one strong push, the hummer was tossed over into the canyon. The explosion on impact caused the silence of the jungle to wake.
Grant watched the beast as it walked around on the other ledge. He could tell that the rex wanted them. Killing Mac, and destroying the hummer with the remaining supplies, lowered their chances of any survival. The tyrannosaur took one last glance at the humans and departed in the jungle.

Nick had already taken several photos of the rex. He was still doing his assignment, even under extreme circumstances. Emily, she shouldn’t of been here. She was untrained and unpredictable. Knowledge of the carnivores wasn’t useful here, all she needed to know is, to go in the opposite direction away from the dinosaur.

“Can we leave now before he finds a way to get over here?” asked Jay Jackson. He had been loading all of the weaponry when the tyrannosaur attacked.

“I get your meaning, what does the map say?” asked Grant. He peered down on Tim’s map. Another bridge up ahead, and it lead into the jungle.

“By the map, we have only one bridge to go. It’s right up head. Maybe five minute walk,” said Tim. He was glad that he had asked for the map, they wouldn’t have known where to go without it.

“Well then, I say we go,” said Turner as he turned and began to walk into the dark jungle. He carried the food containers, and a rifle on his side. Ken followed him. Those two men was there ticket out of this place, they knew how to handle these dinosaurs. They were skilled and excellent shooters.

The group followed them. Throne was reloading his pistol. He glanced up in the jungle for a split second, and thought he had seen something. Something red and black, large and massive. He stopped to make sure nothing was there, the jungle was clear, nothing was there. Most be my imagination. He continued on with the group. Once he caught up with them, they was already at the next drop off. The bridge was no where in sight. He could hear Hunter speaking.

“Where the hell is the bridge?”

“By the map, it says we are right at the entrance of it,” said Tim Murphy.

“I found it,” said Nick, he was over at the ledge, looking down.

“Where is it? Did it fall down?” asked Jay Jackson. He stepped over to the ledge. He located the bridge at the bottom of the canyon. A river underneath it. They had built it there.

“Great, how do we get down there?” asked Billy Brennan. He scanned the area, looking for a way down. He began to walk around near the jungle.

“Tim, look. The map has shaded areas where we are, it shows where we go to get down. It looks like it slopes-” Grant paused when heard Billy yell. He turned and looked for him.

“Where did he go?!” asked Emily. She was staring to get paranoid.

“Billy! Where are you?! Billy!” shouted Grant, caring less if any dinosaur heard him. He was thinking, I lost Billy, I can’t lose Billy.

From the minute of silence, Billy answered in a muffled voice, “I am okay. I found the way down. It’s a steep slope.”

“Any thing injured?” asked Hunter Bowman. He followed Billy’s voice to the steep slope that lead down into darkness.

“Everything is good. Bring the flashlights and some flares. I can’t see anything,” replied Billy.

Grant slid down the slope, to join his student. The air was more stale down in the path. It was the smell of worry. Something had went wrong down here. Grant could feel these senses.

“Emily, come down next,” shouted Grant. He didn’t want Emily out of his sight.

Emily slid down the slope and landed at Grant’s feet. He bent down to help her up. She smiled at him as she dusted herself off. Billy walked over beside Alan and looked up the hidden path. Grant’s eyes widened as he took a look at Billy. He was covered in blood. All of his clothes stained red.

“Ah!” shouted Brennan. He quickly ripped his vest off and slung it down to the dark ground. He was breathing hard, frightened by the unknown substance that was on him.

“I thought you said you wasn’t injured!” said Alan Grant as he check his student for wounds.

“It isn’t mine, somebody else’s,” replied Billy. He stared at the red stained jacket.

“Bring the weaponry down here! Rogers and Thorne give us the flares!” shouted Emily. Two flares rolled down the path. Grant bent down and got them. He lit them and turned to face the darken cave. As he turned, Emily seen the walls of the cave. She covered her mouth in disgust. She looked sick.

The walls was covered with blood and dinosaurian skin. It didn’t have much of a stench, the skin and other animal parts must have been here a long while, or aired out. But the blood on Billy’s vest and pants was fresh. A injured dinosaur or a carnivore came in here not too long ago.

Tim slid down the path. He viewed the walls as soon as he stood up. His face had the expression of fear. The others came down. Nick began to take photos of the skeletons and blood covered walls. Ken and Turner raised their rifles, alerted. They knew that a carnivore had came through, or even worse, they was in it’s den.

“We need to stay on the path, follow it until we get to the bridge. Try to stay in the middle of the road, away from the walls. All we did is a dinosaur to smell blood on us,” said Grant, he started to walk on deeper into the cave. Who would you thought they would make this cave a road to a pen?

“He’s right, if we are in a carnivore den, we don’t want to find out whose it is,” said Nick Van Owen.

“Look at those claw marks on that torn piece of flesh. It looked as if this dinosaur was raged. Not even worried about a surprise attack,” said Tim, he had studied on many carnivorous dinosaurs in the pass, none could fit the description of these markings. They wasn’t bigger than a tyrannosaur, but they went in deeper in the body of it’s prey. It had to be stout. The claws marks showed it had three fingers, meaning it wasn’t a T-Rex.

“Tim, let’s go, they already left us,” said Hunter Bowman.

Tim and Hunter hurried to catch up with the group. They shortly found them when they turned to first corner. Thorne and Jackson was examining a skeleton. A human skeleton. The cave was lit up and could be seen perfectly outside. The bridge was right in front of them.

“Whoever it was,” started Thorne, “was a veterinarian for Jurassic Park.”

“He most try to escape through the Megalodon pen, but seemed to get trapped in here. He must of starved to deaf,” said Emily. He was bringing her senses back to reality. This was her first field trip. Most likely her last.

The group departed from the skeleton and began to cross the bridge. It was only four foot above the river. Billy paused and put his leg down in the river water, to wash off some blood on his shoes and pants.

“I wouldn’t do that,” said Nick. He was serious.

“Yeah, he’s right. Remember the last time we was at water,” explained Grant. Just to think prehistoric piranha. What could be worse than primal fish, walking dinosaurs, and flying 30 foot long birds?

Billy pulled his feet out of the water.

As they entered the next cavern, it lead straight up, into the jungle. They could see the vines and grass over the ledges. They started up the path. They was tired, knowing they only been on the island for three hours and already being attacked, was too much to handle.

Once up the path, they found themselves in the jungle. Surrounded by conifers and ferns they continued on with their mission to find the tracking team. According to the map, if they followed the tail it would lead them to the tyrannosaur paddock. Avoiding the more carnivores, they went off the road. A short cut to the visitor center perhaps.
Not long after they got off the path, they stopped at a large metal fence. Covered with vines and mud, they had to climb it. Tim and Jackson was the first to get over the fence. Grant helped Emily up, she was his responsibility and he wasn’t going to let her get into any trouble. Nick Owen raised his camera, taking pictures of the jungle, he paused.

“What’s that sound?” asked Nick. He lowered the camera.

A humming sound grew closer. Unfamiliar to what it was, they climbed even faster up the fence. Grant was at the top helping everyone over, then as he was helping Hunter up, the source of the sound flew out of the jungle. Primal Insects. The new threat buzzed close to Hunter’s face. Four of them, all had large stingers at the end of their bodies. Most likely poisonous.

The closet insect stopped, seeming to forget that the group of newcomers was there beside them. They hurriedly buzzed away. No reason, why did they leave?

The answer to Hunter’s question was then answered. The fence vibe rated. The large metal wires swung backwards and forwards. Something was coming. Something big.

“Get over the fence!” shouted Emily, she must’ve felt the ground vibrate.

Hunter made his way over the top and down to the bottom. Grant’s backpack was snagged on a barbwire piece on the fence. He quickly tried to get it loose. The fence vibrated, but much more harder. It was close. The group on the that was on the ground was looking forward at the jungle they came from. Grant stared blankly at the silent jungle. The breathing of the creature was so close, it seemed as if- damn…

Alan Grant slowly turned to face the jungle they was getting ready to go into. A 9ft tall carnivorous dinosaur stood watching the back turned group. The dinosaur had two devilish horns above it’s eye, showing it’s identity. Now Grant understand what made the marks on those dead animals, raged animal, it was a Carnotaurus. Why would Hammond want to have one of these things on the island?! We already had enough trouble out of the tyrannosaurs…
Grant sat still on the rusted fence. He made no movements. The rest of group was still viewing the jungle, waiting for the creature to appear. The Carnotaurus was a vicious dinosaur in it’s time period, attacking anything that got in it’s way. Growing to 26ft in length, not even a full grown Spinosaurus would mess with such a vicious and careless dinosaur.

Emily peered up at Grant. She noticed he was facing back toward the jungle behind them. She slowly turned and located the vicious looking carnivore.

    Carnotaurus

Emily tapped on Billy’s shoulder, he turned. The sounds seemed to come from the other side of the fence. How did it get over here? Billy gasped. Ken Rogers could see the outline of the carnivore in Billy’s eye. Knowing that standing still wouldn’t save them from such a threat as this, he turned quickly with his rifle in hand. He began to open fire on the beast. The Carnotaurus roared in rage.

“Run! Get over the fence, stay on the road!” shouted Rogers as he continued firing at the beast.

The bullets seemed not even faze it. The hard skin on it back and face was incredible. The Carnotaurus roared again, and started to make it’s way toward the group. Grant reached down and grabbed Nick’s and Emily’s hand and pulled them up. As everyone quickly made their way to the other side, Grant tried to get the backpack loose once again. Hell with it.

Alan Grant dived off the top of the fence. He landed on his hands and knees. He got up, and started to run to get back on the road. He could see the others already ahead of him. Grant looked back to see if Rogers was on the other side of the fence, he was gone. The Carnotaurus stood where he was last seen. Blood was splashed on the metal railing of the fence. He was dead.

The Carnotaurus lifted it’s foot up and smashed it down on the fence. The entire railing fell to the ground. The hostile carnivore walked out into the open and watched as it’s prey ran down the road. The Carnotaur turned and departed into the jungle, noticing the bloody prints off one of the human’s shoes on the pavement. The Carnotaur smelled of the closest print, it smelled like a iguanodon that he had feasted on in his den. The Carnotaur looked up, the homo sapiens had disappeared from view. They was in his territory.
