The sirens wail through the town. The police cars pull up to a house. The cops rush out, knocking open the door. After the cops run into the house, a young man named Owen Hendrickson follows them in. They swarm the house with their guns drawn. They suddenly come upon a bathroom. Suddenly, shots are fired. The four run up the stairs. Owen turns the corner to the hallway to see two dead police officers lying on the floor. He and the others run down the hallway. They reach a lighted room where they find a man with a gun. A cop enters the room, but is put down by one bullet. The two cops wait tense outside the room while Owen enters the room next to it. Another cop enters with his gun in the air. Owen, in the room beside, guesses as to where the person is standing. The shooter fires at the cop, and the bullets smack into his chest. Owen shoots through the wall several times. He stops after the seventh shoot. He and the other cop enter the next room to find a man lying on the floor, gasping for air. The cop radios in for an ambulance while Owen stands there, peering into the mans eyes. Suddenly the shooter regains strength and shoots Owen in the leg. The other cop returns fire. The bullets strike the man on the forehead, and his grip on the gun releases.

Owen lifts himself onto the bed in the doctors’ room. Owen pulls up his left pant leg as the doctor walks in.
“Okay Owen, uh, how have you been?” he asks.
“Fine doc. It’s been hurting a little, but fine,” he replies.
“Well lets take a look at it,” the doctor says as he leans into inspect the leg. He sees two round scars on his calf.
“Well, Owen, It looks as if the muscle tissue isn’t fixing itself. So, in the next month, you’ll have to have surgery.”
“What? I can’t have surgery! What if something goes wrong?” he asks.
“Nothing will, Owen?” the doctor says calmly.
“How do you know?” he puts in.
“Because I’ll be doing the surgery,” the doctor says.
The doctor pats Owen on the back as he limps out the Doctors’ Office.

Three days later, Owen grabs his cane and limps down the hallway in his apartment. He exits the building through the back door, and walks to his convertible. He hops in and starts it. Within seconds he pulls out the parking lot and drives onto the highway.

He pulls up to the police station. He gets out grabs his cane and limps up to the building. When he enters, a woman named Hilary York greets him in the hallway.
“Hi Owen, I never got to thank you for that wonderful date last night,” she said with a giggle.
“Your welcome Hilary. But now, I’ve got a job to do,” he says and walks past Hilary and into the station.
There he sees the Chief on the phone with someone. He limps over to the office and enters it. He sits down as the Chief calmly talks on the phone. He puts it on the hook, sits down and says, “Dang residents, think they see everything! Anyway, there was a kidnapping last night.”
“Oh, can I have this case please!” Owen begs.
“Now just wait one moment, I’ve got to explain. Along with the kidnapping there was casualties. The parents of the child. Her name is Jillian Stikes. There were no fingerprints, no nothing. The forensic group already went through the place, and nothing. So, this one will be hard. If you want it you got it,” the Chief says.
“Yes! Thank you god!” Owen says to himself as he shakes the Chiefs’ hand and limps away.

    Chapter 2

    Time: 12:01:39 p.m.
    Date: 5/27/99

Owen limps up to the house of a man named Ronald Hearing. He nocks on the door.
    “Hello, anyone home!” Owen yells.
“I’m coming, hold on,” a faint voice comes. Someone comes to the door.
    “Hello?” he says.
“Hello, I’m Detective Owen Hendrickson. I’m investigating the deaths of Peggy and Tim Stikes and the kidnapping of Jillian Stikes. May I come in?” he asks.
“Yah, come on in,” Ronald beckons.

The two sit in the living room of Ronald’s house.
“So, did you know the Stikes well?” Owen asks.
“Yah I did, I ate dinner over there at least two times a week,” he answered.
“Did they have any enemies?” Owen asks.
“Uh, Tim did. Our boss, Mr. Larry, just fired him for being lazy,” Ronald explained.
“Uh, okay Ronald, I’ll get back to you if you as soon as I can,” Owen assures and limps to the door.

    Time: 3:28:09 p.m.
    Date: 5/27/99

Owen drives his car onto the construction site. He gets out and limps his way to the office trailer. He knocks on the door. Someone comes to the door.
“Hello, you must be Mr. Larry, I’m Detective Owen Hendrickson. I’m working on the murders of Tim and Peggy Stikes, and the kidnapping of Jillian Stikes. Can I have a word with you?” Owen asks.

The two sit in the small trailer. They sip at lemonades and talk.
“So, Mr. Larry, You knew Tim, right?” Owen asks.
“Yah, I knew him, that nobody. He was the laziest person on the site. He wouldn’t do didley-squat,” Mr. Larry says.
“So that’s why you fired him?” Owen asks.
“Yah that’s why!” Mr. Larry says.
“Well, Mr. Larry, I’m just asking questions now, but I’ll get back to you. And, oh, thanks for the lemonade,” Owen says and he shakes Mr. Larry’s hand. He turned and Limped back to his car.

Owen drives down the road and he comes to an abandoned car. He pulls over to see if anyone was hurt or injured. He gets out and limps down the side of the road to the car. He sees a pool of blood and a wallet. He opens it. Ronald Hearing!

    Chapter 3

Owen drops the wallet and looks around. There is a blood trail leading into the grass from there. He follows the blood into the woods. After another 100 feet, he sees a trail. He decides to follow. After about 300 feet, he comes to a dead body. Ronald Hearing. He has a knife wound in his stomach.

Owen sits on a tree log in the woods as the paramedics wheeled the body away. The Chief walked upside him.
“It’s all right Owen. We’ll get this guy. Obviously he had something to do with the case,” the Chief said.
“Yah, maybe you’re right. I’ll see if there was a struggle out at his place before I dig into his past,” Owen said. He got up, picked up his cane, and limped down the trail.

Owen knocks on the house of Claire Thatcher. She lives only but a hundred feet away. Someone comes to the door.
“Hello,” she says, “Can I help you?”
“Yah, as a matter of fact you can. I’m Detective Owen Hendrickson. I’m working on a murder/kidnapping case and your neighbor has something to do with it,” Owen says.
“Am I safe living here?” she asks.
“Oh no, you’re fine. He’s dead. Can I have a word with you?” he asks.

Claire escorts him to her dining room table. As Owen walks through her house he sees a muddy foot print of a hiking boot. They both sit down and talk.
“So, Claire, uh, did you see anything around, oh, three hours ago?” Owen asks her.
“Uh, yah, I did, his brother, Jordan Hearing. I heard some sort of a struggle,” She says.
“Really, do you know what about?” he asks.
“Uh, I heard something, oh my god. Was there a little girl kidnapped?” she asks.
    “Uh, yah,” he says, puzzled.
“They were shouting about where she was at?” she says.
“Thank you, Claire. I’ve got to go,” he says. He shakes her hand and limps out the door.

While Owen is driving in his car, he punches in the name Hearing, Jordan. He waits a minute then it comes up. He sees the address. 888 North Washington. He drives faster.

He limps up to the crappy house. He knocks on the door. Jordan answers.
“Hello, you must be Jordan, may I come in?” Owen asks.
“Yah, sure, come on in,” he says.
The two stand in the living room. Owen pulls out his badge.
“I’m Detective Owen Hendrickson. Your brother is dead,” Owen says calmly.
“You’re on to me, aren’t you? We don’t have the girl anymore. But she’s not dead,” Jordan says as he begins to walk backwards.
    “Come again?” Owen says.
“Get away from me!” Jordan says as he runs.
I can’t run Owen says to himself. He picks up an ashtray and chucks it at him. The ashtray smacks into Jordan’s head and he falls down, unconscious.

He awakes in a jail cell. A police officer comes to the cell.
“Come on Jordan, time for the interrogation,” he says.

Jordan and Owen sit in the windowless room. Owen sips at his coffee and sits down.
“So, Jordan, we know you have the girl. Where is she at?” Owen asks.
“I don’t know. Ron kept her in his closet,” he says.
“Do you know who killed your brother?” Owen asks.
“I did. After I found out that he talked to you, I thought he’d said something. I saw him pull out and I followed him. About another five miles I flagged him down. I got out, stabbed him and left,” Jordan explains.
“Christ, why, he was your brother?” Owen says.
“I told you, he talked to much!” Jordan yelled.
“He told me a man named Mr. Larry killed them!” Owen yelled back.
“Mr. Larry, huh. I know him. He might have as far as I know.
“Fine, that’s all,” Owen says and he limps out the room.

    Chapter 4

Owen opens Ron Hearings’ door to his house. He walks in. He scopes out the first closet. He limps to it and opens it. There sits a chair and a bandana lying on the floor, probably used for a gag. He sees a muddy foot print on the floor. It was a hiking boot.

Owen sits in his office, thinking. Where could she be he thought. Suddenly the phone rang. The chief picked it up.
“Hello,” he said, “Oakdale Police Department. Chief Pilate speaking.”
“Hello Chief. I’ve got the girl<” the person says.
The chief cups the speaker with his hand.
“Owen, get in here,” he yells.
Owen limps out of his office and goes to the chief.
    “Yah Chief?” he asks.
The Chief slides him a piece of paper with an address. He motions Owen to go.

Owen and three other squad cars drive seventy down the highway. They turn into a subdivision. They pull up to the house. Claire Thatcher’s house! Owen limps up to the house while the cops run up. They kick open the door. Claire screams as she drops the phone with a voice alternating devise attached to it. She drops to her knees as she flings her arms in the air. Two cops restrain Claire while another one and Owen search the house. They walk down the stairs to the basement. They search the entire down stairs. Nothing. But as they leave, Owen spots something. A rug. He limps to it, flings it up, revealing a small door. The cop rushes over as Owen opens it. There sits the girl. The cop reaches in and picks her up. Then the two walk up stairs.
    Owen approaches Claire.
“How did you find me, Owen?” She says.
    “Caller I.D.” he says.

    Epilogue

Owen lies back on the operation bed. The nurse puts the gas mask over his mouth. Before minutes, he losses consciousness.
“Owen, Owen, wake up,” someone calls.
He opens his eyes to see the doctor with a worried grin.
“I’m sorry Owen, you won’t be able to walk on that leg anymore,” the doctor says.
    Owen bows his head.
    “Doctor. Come here,” he asks.
    “Yes Owen?” he asks.
Owen looks up. He swings his arm, striking the doctor across the face with his fist.
