Chapter 4 Part 4: The Plan.
Alan Grant followed his two friends out into the morning air. Hank had decided to take the next transport out, and was already headed to the makeshift airfield. Alan couldn’t blame him. He knew almost nothing about the creatures, and he probably would not be very useful in this situation. Todd, on the other hand, knew much about avian behavior. That was definitely of use. The entire area was swarming with Costa Rican military. Very few spoke English. Ian and Alan relied on the one English speaking officer, Ramirez, and the translations given by Todd. Ramirez had briefed them the night before. The plan was simple, but extremely hazardous. Ian, Alan, and Todd were to separate into three groups. Each party would consist of a translator, an armored vehicle, and twenty solders. Ramirez approached them. After a second briefing, they would move out.

“What the fu… What were those things?” Katie Harbin could barely speak. She had been running and hiding from unseen animals for the past three and a half hours! The sun was just beginning to rise to the East. She had finally found her way to the battered perimeter wall. To her surprise, she found Dodgson, Buckley, and two other men hiding in the nearby trees. Doyle, however, was nowhere to be seen. “Those, my dear, were a type of Oviraptor,” Buckley said as he descended the tree. “Well,” Dodgson said, “That’s what we think they are.” “Yes,” Buckley continued, “Grant seemed to think it was a new species.” He pointed to a corpse on the ground. The skull was crushed, and the body was badly mangled. “Normal Oviraptors could probably never do that.” “They followed you?” “Yes, they got Mr. Doyle there.” “Where are they now?” “They’re sleeping.” “I thought you said that none of the carnivores were nocturnal?” “I never said that,” Buckley corrected, “I said that none of the large carnivores were nocturnal. Now, stop wasting time. We are still in danger here.”

“We leave in veinte minutos. Our objective is to destroy only hostile animales,” Ramirez said in broken English. “What happens to the Biosyn facility?” “Once the animales are contained, we will destruya the area.” Ian turned to Grant and Todd. “It still sounds like a lousy plan to me,” he said. “It’s the best anyone can do,” said Todd, “What other choices are there?” Ian shrugged. He knew that Todd was right. However, Ian was beginning to wish he had left with Hank. “You okay Alan?” “Yeah, I’m just a little nervous, Todd.” They began their march to the jungle. Grant turned to Ian, a serious look on his face. “If I don’t make it back, tell Ellie that I love her.” “I was just going to tell you to tell Sarah the same,” Malcolm said. “Don’t be so negative you two,” Todd said, “It’ll be alright.” “No one can predict that,” Ian replied. “Chaos rules in life, love, and especially in battle.” As they reached the limits of the village, the large group split into three. The final campaign had begun.
