Chapter 5: Part 4/ Conversation
Nick and Samantha walked side by side in the middle of the caravan. It had been ten hours since their encounter with the Tyrannosaurs, but strangely, they had not seen any dinosaurs. An odd calm had overtaken the group, they marched along in silence at first, but then started conversation. Snare led the group, with Nick and Samantha in the center, and Turner and Jackson patrolled the rear. “Nick,” said Turner, “Come here for a second.” Nick and Jackson traded places in the tight formation. “What is it James?” “I think our captor just realized who I am. He’s been looking at me strangely. I don’t trust him, He’s crazy,” Turner said. “What do you feel he is capable of?” “I’m not sure, but I hope we can break away from him somehow. With that gun… We could use the tranquilizer…” “No we can’t,” Nick replied, “Harrison’s Tranquilizer is only effective on animals.” “Damn. Well, I guess that’s out of the question. We could just use our numbers, but he would still kill some of us before we could over power him.” “That is absolutely out of the question.” “The fanatical moron never sleeps, so we can’t get it that way either,” Turner said sighing. Jackson reappeared next to the pair of conspiring hostages. He had a very anxious look on his face. “It gets worse,” he said, “Much worse.”
“I kept wondering why we haven’t seen any animals, and now I’m afraid I know why.” “What is it?” “We are being stalked,” Jackson whispered. Stunned silence swept over Nick and Turner. Neither of them could think of anything to ask or say. “James, go explain to Samantha what is happening, and stay with her at all costs,” Nick ordered, “What are they, the Tyrannosaurs?” “No, worse. If it were the T-Rex or Raptors we would be dead already. Nick, do you remember what I said on the plane about the Ceratosaurus,” Jackson asked? “Yes, something about changing colors…” “That’s correct, and if that is what they are, we will never see the attack coming.” Nick walked on in muted thought for a moment. Why, he pondered, do these outings always end in disaster? Perhaps it is God’s way of telling us to leave nature alone. Then another thought entered his mind, I wonder if Roland is having as much excitement as us?
As the humans marched onward, the male Ceratosaurus with the broken horn materialized a little less than one hundred yards behind them. He closed his eyes, and took deep breaths. The little animal responsible for his damaged horn and dead mate was with the others. Turning toward the silhouette of another Ceratosaur, he growled. As he turned back toward the humans, the Ceratosaur vanished once more.
