    Lawndale Drive Part 1
    By John D.

    Lawndale Drive

*A slow guitar rhythm plays in the back ground as we see a older guy sitting in a dark den, that is in the basement of his house. What light you can see is very diem giving off this red glow that gives the room a calm peaceful setting for such a dark room. You start to see a mans face, who is wearing a pair of glasses, smoking slowly on a cigarette, as he begins to talk. His voice is deep and when he talks you can hear a faint whistle from all the years smoking.*

The Man: My name is Nicholas “Little Nick” Fritzgerald. I got into the rackets at a young age. I believe I was fourteen when I started stealing from Quickie Mart type stories, you know those stories owned by the people from India…you know like Apu and shit. It was simple stuff like cigarettes, and Slim Jims. Me and my friends had always been stoners since we were young like thirteen maybe fourteen, so in return from being stoners we realized that we could make a pretty easy profit from selling the shit. We already spent enough buying on smoking the shit so why not spend a little more and make money in return from getting high. We had all been friends for so long it was easy for use to form a nice little gang to sell the shit to people at the schools or around the neighborhood. Me and my other friend Danny “Danimal” Sloan both lived on Lawndale Drive, both our families had lived there before we were even born. Being that we lived so close to each other Danny and me had been friends since we could walk and talk. One block down on Lakeshore Parkway my friend Jimi “Watchtower” Wilson lived there since his mom and him moved when he was eight. A block and a half northwest of Lawndale Drive was Castramarco Street, or what we called it C-Street, was were my friend Ricky “Sharkie” Jones lived since he was about eleven when his parents moved here from two counties over, when his dad got a management job for a construction company.

Well Danny, Jimi, Ricky, and myself hung out so much people from school gave us the name the LD Boys. Which means the Lawndale Drive Boys, just because we hung out at Dannys house which was one of the first houses when you entered Lawndale Drive. When we got older around the age of sixteen we started a gang the Lawndale Crew also known as the Lawndale Family. Most of the guys weren’t even from Lawndale Drive, but us as the founders were. Even though Jimi and Ricky didn’t exactly live on Lawndale Drive, the fact that they stayed there all the time made up for it. There was also Sammy Camron, a younger guy from the East Side of town, Anthony Williams, a friend from school who lived on Davine Port. There was also guys like Hydro, Tommy Toon, Sally O’, Cocoa Smith, and Cricket Sanders. By the age of seventeen we were all members of the Lawndale Crew. I guess you could of called us a street gang at that time, because we were still small, we had yet to do anything big. In the city there were two other major gangs, the Aztec Warriors of the Brown Nation or the AWBN, and then you had the gang from the Crestwood Projects. So our small town had three major street gangs, one being full of Mexican-American teens, another full of African-American teens, and then our gang which was full of mostly white teens.

*Little Nick pauses for a second to light a cigarette as he beings to talk again.*

Little Nick: For the longest time all three of us didn’t have a beef with each other, then the Aztecs and Crestwood Project Posse got a beef with each other after a drug deal went down between two crews, one being from each faction. The Aztecs tried to ripe off the Posse by not selling them the exact amount of coke and the Posse tried to fuck over the Aztecs by not paying the full price. After each crew told the heads of the gangs what happen, a Street War broke out. The war wouldn’t end until one of the gangs were whipped out, so it was going to be a long battle, and who the victory would be was anyones guess. For the Lawndale Crew it was a peaceful time, because we didn’t have anything to do with the botched deal so neither of the gangs wanted to have to fight a two front war. We were making our standard amount of money off selling weed like we useally did, but we slowly started to sell other things like pills and your occasional powder sales.

You had Danny, Jimi, Ricky, and myself all head of a few of the guys like Danny… he was over Sammy, Tommy Toon, and Cricket. I was over Anthony, Sally O’, and Cocoa…then you had Jimi who was over Ricky and Hydro. We all sold weed to different people around the city like for instance Jimi and his guys sold to the heavy metal groups from the schools. Our city being full of rich kids and preppy teenagers Danny and my crews took care of selling to them. The gangs useally sold to the same race of people as the gang members themselves where. We sold to the whites, the blacks sold to the blacks, the Mexicans sold to the Mexicans.

I guess it was probably June the 16th when the first actually shooting of the Street War happen. It happened about ten minutes after eleven , at least that’s what the police report supposedly said. I heard it happened at ten-thirty that night, but anyway back to what happen. Supposedly four members of the Aztecs got drunk and had all snorted themselves up pretty good, and these college professors got the bright idea to go shoot up a street corner in the Crestwood Projects. The corner was where one of the biggest dealers of the Crestwood Posse hung out with his crew of about six or seven guys just about every night. You know they would stay there and get drunk off of Mad Dog and Cheap Wine. That night Archie…one of the big dealers for the CP and four of his guys where standing on the corner doing there thing, when the four Aztecs started to creep by in there 95’ Impala, windows down, ready to fire. When they got close enough the guy behind the drive hung out his window with his 9mm pointed at them, the guy in the passenger seat had a double barrel sawed off, and the other guy in the back had a sub-machine gun he purchased illegally. When they got to the corner the three of them opened fire…the two shots from the sawed off got Archie, the sub-machine gun and the nine took care of the other four. One guy…this nigger named Matt, survived the actually shooting, but died three days later in the hospital. He was alive long enough to tell other members of the Crestwood Posse who done it.

This is when the Lawndale Crew got pulled into the War. We had an agreement with a Chief of the Aztecs, we would exchange weed for coke, and then distribute the product to our buyers. Well the crew this Chief was over was the crew that claimed the four Aztecs that shot up Archie and his boys, the 16th Street Barrio. One of those four warriors, the driver of the Impala was this guy named Joseph, and he was one of the guys that would make the exchange in Lawndale. The Crestwood Posse found out about the exchange and they decided to get there revenge on the Aztecs after a drop one night. They fucked up by doing it on our turf though which extended from C-Street, through Lawndale Drive, Lakeshore, and two other streets around that area. That’s not counting the two blocks of ours in the East Side. Well the Crestwood Posse got there revenge…after the exchange on C-Street, the Aztecs drove by Danny’s house on Lawndale to pay there respects to the heads of the gang. But as they were stopped at the stop sign at the end of Lakeshore, five masked member of the Crestwood Posse surrounded the car, which was a Nissan Sentra, and shot it up. The driver and passenger were killed by blast from a pump shotgun, the three in the back were done is by shots from 9mm and .45 caliber handguns.

Of course being at Danny’s house, Danny, Jimi, Ricky, Cocoa, Tommy Toons, and myself heard the gun fire, and we drove down to the end of Lakeshore where we saw the car. The Crestwood Posse had already left, and the first cop had arrived on the scene. Tommy and Cocoa got out the car and asked the cop if anyone needed help, but he said it looked like everyone was dead. Tommy looked inside the car to see that the bag that had the weed in it was gone. That means the Crestwood Posse didn’t only fuck up my killing these members of the Aztecs on our turf, but they killed Aztecs that we were making money with, and the fact that they stole the shit we had just exchanged and they would turn around and make profit over something that wasn’t even theres. Jimi was really pissed off because at the end of Lakeshore is his house, right at the stop sign where those guys got shot up. It caused a lot of people to come around his house that shouldn’t even be there, plus the Posse could have been careless and someone in Jimi’s house like his mom or little sister could have been hit by bullets. Mainly we were pissed because since the hit was successful and it was on our turf, made us look bad to the Aztecs who were assured our protection while on our turf, and the other way around.

We didn’t let anything get out of hand with the Aztecs, so we came to an agreement that we would continue to work together, and we would become allies to the Aztecs while they were at war with the Crestwood Posse. This made the CP made at us, so there was going to be a full scale war between the alliance of the Lawndale Crew and the Aztec Warriors of the Brown Nation against the Crestwood Project Posse.

    Part 2 coming soon….
