Once in a Blue Moon, Special Edition
    By Icebreaker

    Opening Comments:
Immediately after the success of “Death Has No Regret”. I knew I would have to work on my second story that I had developed months ago entitled “Once in a Blue Moon”. The story did not change much from my original idea except that in my first version the story took place entirely in the jungles of Costa Rica. I later decided to change the story so that it would tie in with the novel “The Lost World”. The original story ended with the expedition finding a hidden InGen laboratory.

However that idea had been shot around on the message boards for sometime and I felt that it was just a little unoriginal. Therefore, I constructed the ending a little bit and came up with a different conclusion. Therefore, over the course of time I changed it to the group heading to Sorna to try to save Richard Levine and Ian Malcolm!

I was excited about the release of this story because I felt that it was definitely going to top “Death Has No Regret” in comments and overall reviews. However, I was so confident I didn’t do a lot of promoting and that was what ended up really hurting me with this story in the long run…It only received around 7 comments I think and I was very disappointed.

I truly believe that this story did not do well because it was a sequel. Throughout my writing of this story I really tried to distance myself from “Death Has No Regret”, but I think that was turn off to the people that liked the more dramatic and sex oriented style of DHNR. When you read this story I think you will understand why I like to call it a spin-off story, rather then a sequel. It is a completely different story with different characters. The only similarity between DHNR and OIABM is that Jake Gravision appears in both…however, that is where the similarities end.

This special edition release has many things including an overall cleaned up version of this story. I was not proud of the story after I had finished it; it was a little jumpy and not as smooth as “Death Has No Regret”. Therefore, I have added deleted scenes and I have also gone back and just cleaned things up overall in this special edition. Anything that is different from the original version will be added in yellow…

As you read this story you will notice Authors Comments (AS), just like there was in DHNR. This time, however, they will be inserted in SKYBLUE. At the end of the story there will be additional features including rejected storylines, deleted scenes, poster art and more! So sit back, relax and enjoy:

    CHAPTER 1…

It was a beautiful Sunday morning; Rick Stiller had just woken up and yawned lazily as he flung himself out of his bed. Today was the day he would talk to Richard Levine about his apparent discovery; he had been waiting nearly a week for this meeting. Rick yawned again and scratched his head as he headed toward his bathroom to freshen up. His feet felt cold as he stepped onto the tile and looked into the mirror. As he looked into the mirror and saw that he had a rough three-day beard, and his hair fell down near his eyes. Stiller was a tall man nearly 6’1, somehow the size fit him though, women found him irresistible and he knew It. Often times he used his wealth to seduce them…Right now though that was the farthest thing on his mind.

In a couple of hours he was to meet with one of the best paleontologist the world had ever seen, however, many people didn’t like this man, including Rick. He was too stuck up and always flaunted his abilities in front of people. He knew he was the best and was not afraid to show it. Rick smiled at himself in the mirror, despite all of that he was still good friends with Richard. Today he would have a detailed discussion with him about the possibility of a lost world in Costa Rica. He knew Levine was one of the few scientists in the world that thought there was a lost world and was very willing to fund expeditions for people in search of them.

That was exactly what Rick was going to talk to him about. Over the past, few years there have been many sightings by villagers and there was a possibility that these could indeed just be reptiles. Rick wasn’t sure until he went out to one of the villages himself. That is where he was shown the decomposing body of one of these creatures. When he first examined the creature, he knew it had to be a dinosaur.

Rick was still looking at himself in the mirror, well he had better start getting ready, he didn’t want to be late for this important meeting…

(AC) This was a fun section of the story to write because I was introducing a new character into my little saga. I think it was weird for some readers because they were expecting this story to be about Jake and when they saw this new guy, Rick, they were a little unsure as to where I was going to take this story.

Another thing I wanted to do right off the bat was let everyone know that this story was going to tie in very closely with the TLW novel…so if they hadn’t read it, it might be a little confusing

An hour and a half later Rick stepped outside of his beautiful home and stepped into his car. He drove fast, that is they way he liked to live. Fast and on the edge, he always pushed himself to the limit and each time he surpassed that limit he raised the bar up further. He took every turn carrying almost to much speed but always seemed to get out of it without killing himself. Within, 20 minutes he was at Levine’s office in Berkley. He knocked sharply on the door and waited for a reply.

    “Yes?”

    “It’s me, Rick.”

“Alright come on in the doors unlocked.”

Rick turned the knob and sure enough, the door swung open with a creak. Rick stepped inside and saw Levine fussing over something on his desk. Richard Levine was a young man, and that is what set him apart from other paleontologist. He had made a name for himself early in life, and he now had the easy life. Richard was dark and thin and he was very confident in the things he did even when he was just overlooking paper work.

“Um, go ahead and sit down,” he was still looking over some papers, “I’ve just got to find that form that….”

He continued to ramble as he searched all over his desk for a paper. Rick sat down and took the opportunity to have a glance around the room. It was very Asian in style, just like Levine’s home. Rick had not been to Levine’s home in some time but imagined it to still be very meticulous. Rick looked back at Levine who was still mulling over his desk. Then he finally gave up.

“Well, I’m sure I’ll find that blasted paper sometime today,” he straightened himself up and smiled, “Now what can I do for you Stiller?”

“I know I shouldn’t be asking you big favors like the one I’m about to ask you but I think it is something you will find interesting,” Richard just sat there listening intently, “Anyway, you know I believe in the existence of a Lost World where prehistoric animals still roam freely without the worries of man, and I know that you as well are very interested in the subject.”

    Richard Levine just nodded.

“Well, I have recently visited a small village somewhere in the jungles of Costa Rica and I have talked to the villagers. They claim to have seen an animal the size of a human that walks upright, but has reptile like skin and long snot. At first I thought this had to be ancient beliefs or religion but that’s when they showed it to me…”

    Rick smiled.

“A corpse Richard, a God damned corpse of the animal.”

Richard continued to stare intently at Rick.

“I believe it is of an extinct species from the Cretaceous period, though I cannot be certain. My best guess however, is that it was some sort of raptor. Probably a velociraptor. In addition, as you know these animals have been thought to be extinct for 65 million years! We could change the history books if we can prove that this animal was still alive and roaming around on our planet. So what do you think?” Rick looked anxiously at Levine.

“This is all very interesting, very interesting but what exactly do you want me to do?”

“I would like you to help me fund an expedition into this jungle in search of the animal. If we find it Richard, we’ll the most famous bastards on the planet…”

    “I’m sorry I can’t’

“Well, if it’s the funding part, that’s no big deal I can pay for it completely I just thought…”

“No, I mean I can’t,” Richard sighed, “As a matter of fact I am onto something right now. I’m putting together my own expedition in search of something similar to what you are looking for…”

(AC) Now I let the conversation develop so that people would be unsure as to what Levine would say, but right here is the turning point. As you can see he has admitted that he is onto something as well and he really doesn’t have time to help Rick, though he would if he have the time. Let us continue and see how Rick responds

Rick could not believe what he was hearing.

“I’m sorry,” Richard did look somewhat disappointed in what he was telling Rick.

“Well, can’t you at least tell me where and what you are after?”

“No,” Richard sighed again “I’m afraid I can’t, however, I will tell you this… I believe I have found a species very similar to the one you are referring to. I found it on one of the islands located in the chain of islands known as los cincos muertes.” You know what I am talking about right?” Rick nodded “Well, anyways I can’t tell you the exact island but I will confide in you something I haven’t told anybody…” he leaned forward.

“I am leaving before my actual expedition does, that means I will be on the island in two days, already beginning my research.”

Rick nodded… it was a lost cause, Richard seemed very serious about this and Stiller was sure he could not convince him to come with him instead.

“Well, it was worth a try,” Rick smiled and stood up, “Best of luck my friend I will speak to you when we both return from our separate adventures.”

    They shook hands.

“Best of luck to you as well Rick,” Levine commented.

Rick nodded his head one last time and then left the office shutting the door behind him. Well, at least there was another friend of his he could talk to, Jake Gravision. In fact, many people said that Jake had encountered prehistoric creatures, and many more said they killed his wife. Jake had always denied these comments and tried to laugh them off. Rick knew he was hiding something though…

Rick had known Jake for sometime and ever since his wife had died during a vacation some years back; he had not been the same. He was supposedly having reoccurring nightmares. In fact, once, when Rick had invited Jake to his summer get away to visit him and his girlfriend at the time, Jake had fallen asleep after a nights drinking and laughter. Minutes later he was shouting and fussing in his seat, still dreaming, he called out the names of dinosaurs. At one point he said a strange phrase; “Death has no regret”. Then seconds later he had awoken feeling a bit embarrassed. Rick never forgot that.

Now, Rick thought as he walked out to his car, he was going to find out exactly what happened five years ago. He was going to see if this had anything to do with his theory of a Lost World, and if it did where the hell it happened at…

(AC) This was an interesting section to write for me because I describe the life of Jake after the events in “Death Has No Regret”. I don’t know about everybody else but I felt good with having him in this story…He was really a fun character to get into. It was hard to develop a reason why Rick would want to speak with Jake about dinosaurs so that is why I added that drunk section

    **************************************************
    CHAPTER 2…

Jake Gravision walked across his living room and sat down on his comfortable couch. His shoulder ached like hell and he knew it would bother him for the rest of his life. He knew he would just have to deal with it, the same way he had dealt with the lose of his wife…Jake looked around his living room, it was very modern everything stainless steel and silver, glass and chrome. That is how he liked things, always up to date and modern.

Over the past five years, Jake had aged drastically. Not in a physical manner but more mentally. Not only did he have to coupe with the lose of his wife but he had to deal with the nightmares and physical pain, that still haunted him. Yes, he was a different man now…He stretched his legs out and laid them down on a table in front of the couch. His mind went back five years to the events that took place on that horrible island.

Ever since, he had gotten back he had kept quiet. He knew that he could not say anything to anyone, so instead he just went back to his normal life. Well, back too as normal as he could. He started to close his eyes and tried to fall asleep, suddenly there was knocking on at his front door…who in the hell could that be?

(AC) I really thought it was important to show that Jake now had a weakness and was very effected by the events at Isla Sorna. I was careful to make sure that people understood that those weaknesses were in the mind but not in the heart. Jake constantly thinks about his wife and every time he does it rips holes through his heart. He truly misses her and would give up anything he has to have her back. However, I also pointed out that he was strong and was able to develop a somewhat normal life

Outside of Jake’s house, Rick Stiller stood patiently waiting for Jake to answer the door. While he stood he looked back out toward the street, Jake sure did live in a good neighborhood. His house was beautiful. Rick turned back to the door and was about to knock again, when the door suddenly opened. Jake stood tall nearly the same height as Rick, he smiled.

“Whoa, what a surprise! How are you?”

“Pretty, good Jake mind if I step inside?”

Jake seemed a bit embarrassed for not offering, “Sorry about that, yes, sure come on in…”

Rick stepped inside and admired the inside of the house. It was just as well kept inside as it was outside.

“Here, lets go into the bar room and have a drink,” Jake said.

Both men walked toward the back of the house and passed the kitchen, on the right side was a small bar with stools. Rick sat down on one of them.

“So, what brings you here?” Jake questioned, “everything alright?”

Rick nodded his head as Jake handed him a shot of vodka, “Ya, everything is fine…In fact, I’m onto something huge right now,” he looked at Jake, “that’s why I came here, I need your help.”

“What can I do for you?”

“Well,” Rick knew this was going to be hard, “I don’t want to be rude Jake, I really don’t but…I uh, well…. I need to know how your wife really died…”

Jake slumped backward against the wall, still sitting in his stool, “What do you mean, I told you there was an accident-“

    “Jake please…”

Jake stared hard at Rick, “Why?”

“Well, I suppose I should tell you what I’m onto,” he drank the shot of alcohol in one gulp, “ I think I have stumbled upon a Lost World,” Jake flinched but regained his composure, “and well I talked to Levine, remember that chap?”

    “Yes…”

“Anyway, he says that there is a strong possibility that I may be onto something. You see…” Rick went onto to tell Jake about the species he found…when he finished Jake just sat there still staring at him.

“Well, Jake,” Rick said, “You see, when you spent the evening with my girlfriend and I, you mentioned something about prehistoric animals, and kept saying things about your wife. Do you remember that?”

Jake nodded, perhaps feeling embarrassed once again about that evening.

“I want to know what really happened Jake…”

Jake sat for a moment and then he spoke, “This is hard for me Rick, it really is…you see my wife and I went on vacation. I cannot tell you where, I know we are great friends but I cannot tell you the exact location. I will tell you it was in the Costa Rica area.”

Rick’s eyes lit up, YES! He was right…

“So as I was saying, we stumbled across something…a land of prehistoric beings. I have know idea where the came from,” Rick knew that was a lie, Jake knew exactly where they came from but just wasn’t going to say it, “Anyway, we were attacked, and my wife didn’t make…”

Jake seemed depressed suddenly, his face was somewhat pale.

“So there is a Lost World…”

    “Yes, possibly.”

Rick stood suddenly he was excited and ready to begin his journey in search of these animals.

“Thank you so much Jake, that’s all I needed to know…”

    Jake grabbed Rick’s arm.

“Rick, if you are indeed going in search of these animals, I warn you. They are dangerous…”

Rick nodded and headed for the door, he had one more person to talk to before he set out on his journey. He did not know the man personally but he had funded one of his geological digs a year or so ago.

    “Thanks again Jake,”

    “No problem…”

Rick rushed out to his car. The man he had to contact was one of the best paleontologist in the world, his name was Alan Grant.

(AC) That whole section above was probably my favorite part out of the entire story because we really get to look at these two men and see what there relationship is. Rick is the first person that Jake has told about the events that occurred and that shows that there is a bond between these two men that now other characters in my stories have. They are truly good friends and this eventually plays over in the last story “A Shadow of Doubt” which is mostly about vengeance

Hours later Rick sat in his house eating a dinner by himself, silently. He was mulling over everything he had done during the day. It seemed as though he was really onto something, he was very excited. This was something that could change the world, well, actually it would change they way people looked at the world. Rick finished his dinner and made his way over to his telephone, he picked it up and dialed a number. After two rings a woman answered the phone, Rick thought he recognized the voice.

    “Hello?”

“Hello,” Rick responded, yes he knew who’s voice it was, “Miss Sattler?”

“No, I’m sorry Miss Sattler no longer works here,” the women replied.

Really? Rick thought, he always thought Grant and Sattler were close…”Excuse me,” he said, “My mistake, could I speak to Dr. Grant?”

“Yes, one moment,” he could hear the women set the phone down. He hoped Grant was not busy. Suddenly a mans voice appeared on the other end of the phone, it seemed like a tired voice coming from a man that worked very hard, “Yes?”

    “Dr. Grant?”

    “Speaking.”

“Oh, hello this is Rick Stiller, I’m not sure you remember me,” Rick said, “Um, I was the man that funded your dig last year in Montana. Remember?”

He seemed to think it over for a second, “Oh yes, Mr. Stiller I’m sorry. How are you these days?”

“I’m fine, thank you. I was wondering if you can help me out,” silence on the other end, “Um, I have heard that you specialize in theories regarding the evolution of the Velociraptor,” more silence, “ I was wondering if you could send me any information regarding these animals.”

The other end of the phone was silent for a while, “Yes, what exactly is it for Mr. Stiller?”

What the hell, why was he so suspicious? “Well, it’s just for my own personal entertainment…”

That seemed to satisfy Grant, “Alright, let me have a look here…Um, yes velociraptor, intelligent animal sharp middle claw on its foot-“

“Actually, Dr. Grant, I was wondering if you could fax it to me,” Rick interrupted, “ I mean that would be easier, don’t you think?”

“Yes, of course what’s your number?

Minutes later Rick had a few pages worth of information on the animal in his hand. It was all quite interesting, these were very intelligent creatures, according to what Grant had written, it was possible they hunted in packs and coordinated there attacks through some sort of speech…very interesting.

“Thank you Dr. Grant, you really are at the top of your profession,” Rick commented.

“Well, thank you Mr. Stiller it was a pleasure speaking with you. Feel free to contact me anytime, if you want further information.”

    “I will.”

Both men hung up and Rick went into his dining room and flicked on the light switch, now he was going to have a look at these papers…

Miles away at that very moment Alan Grant, was hanging up his phone and getting ready to leave his office, the next morning he was going to go out to the dig site and check up on there work, he wanted to be there when they finished. He thought about his phone call with Rick for a moment, memories of Isla Nublar rushed into his mind. Thoughts of the boat that held the Velociraptors, that nearly made its way to Costa Rica, rushed into his mind. If he had been a minute late to make that phone call to stop the boat from docking it would have been a disaster.

Someone once told him that the boat was actually 100 feet away from the pear when it was told to turn back, luckily, the Raptors had not got off. Still there was always a doubt in Grants mind. What if some of those animals had indeed gotten off and made it to shore, it was a strong possibility, the boat had come within only 100 feet of the mainland…Grant pushed the thought aside, it was absurd, or was it…

He quickly dismissed the idea; well one thing was for certain no one would ever get him back on that island again. That was for sure, no matter how much money they would offer him if would still refuse, or would he…those creatures fascinated him, besides he was told the island had been destroyed.

Alan turned around and head for the door out of his office.

“Don’t forget to lock up sweetie,” he said to his assistant.

    “Sure thing…”

Grant grabbed his hat on the way out the door; it was very similar to the one he had lost on Isla Nublar. He slid it onto his head and made sure it was straight he then opened the door and winked at his assistant as he left his office….

(AC) That was just a fun part to write because I wanted to show what Alan Grant was doing in between his adventures…I also added that ending because I thought it was good foreshadowing to JP3. Grant swears he would never return to the island but even now he has doubts

    **************************************************
    CHAPTER 3…

One week later, after assembling a team and preparing non-stop, Rick Stiller sat aboard one of three helicopters that were taking his team into the Costa Rican jungles and dropping them off. The past week was very hectic, he had not had time to do anything but prepare for this journey into the unknown. Now though he sat with his eyes closed listening to the rythematic thumping of the helicopter blades as it prepared to land. According to the pilot he would set the helicopter down inside one of Costa Rica’s jungles, the other helicopters would follow but would unload only one at a time, the opening in the jungle was to small. That meant as soon as the first one unloaded its passengers it would ascend again and the second would land…

Rick’s would be the last to land and his team would only have 15 minutes before they set out into the dense jungles in search of a Lost World. The helicopters would return once Rick was finished, he had no set time but had radios to call for them when he wanted. With the supplies, he had now he could last from 3-7 days in the jungle before having to leave. That was all he needed he was planning on being out of there in no more then 3 days anyway.

Minutes later, after the first two helicopters landed and unloaded their passengers, Rick landed. He jumped out of the chopper that was hovering around four feet from the ground and landed with a soft thump. Hunter Lucas and Tara Brindley followed him. Rick waved to the helicopter as he lifted up and took off. Moments later all of the choppers were out of sight and the team of 10 sat quietly. Rick spoke first…

“I suppose we had better set up base camp right here,” he scanned the group of peoples faces, “and as we move deeper into the jungle we will set up secondary camps.”

The group did not respond, instead they got to work unloading and began setting up the camp. Rick smiled; most of the people were truly professionals. Hunter Lucas was exactly what his name was…a hunter. He had hunted lions in Africa for sometime and was one of the first people to sign up for this expedition. Rick had warned him, no animals were to be harmed unless they presented mortal danger to the group. Hunter cared a series of weapons, unfortunately Rick was no weapons expert and he had no idea what they were.

Thomas Brooks was another member, he was a wealthy entrepreneur like Rick and was also one of the first to sign up, he had been friends with Rick for sometime and was excited about such an expedition. Then there was Tara Brindley, a beautiful woman with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. She was the only female member of the expedition, Rick was not very fond of the idea, however, he soon found she could be useful. Rick was not entirely sure what she did for a living but decided not to question her. Hopefully the males in the group would treat her as one of them.

Next, there was a group of Paleontologists…Christopher White, Brian Johnson, and John Smiles. These men seemed to be very cautious. Perhaps, it was because they knew what the beasts they were searching for, were capable of. The last three men Rick knew nothing about, just there names, Jeffery Stockton, Doug Marcus, and Samuel Steele. Rick was weary of these three but had no chose to sign them on the expedition; at the time, he had no one else.

The group moved around busily setting things up. Rick walked over to Tara. She did not look like the outdoor type but he figured she must be if she was going along on this expedition.

(AC) From this point on the story gets jumpy but I had to keep everything moving or it would have gotten very slow. This first part of the chapter I introduce all of the characters one by one so you feel like you know them. I thought it wasn’t a very original way of introducing the characters but I also thought that it was the most practical and effective

“Hi, there,” he smiled, she was struggling with something in her bag, “Could I give you a hand?”

“No, I’m fine thank you,” she looked a bit annoyed, “Perhaps someone else needs your expert assistance though…maybe you should ask around.”

Rick did not know how to respond instead he nodded his head and went over to help Thomas and Samuel pitch up a tent….

Hours later the groups base was set up and they sat around a fire talking amongst themselves, Rick sat next to Christopher White and Hunter Lucas. Christopher seemed very interested in the species Rick thought lived in these jungles…in fact he seem a bit frightened.

“So you say we are in search of Velociraptors?” he questioned Rick.

“Yes, are they a dangerous species?”

“Yes and No,” he swallowed, “You see they weren’t particularly large animals, perhaps 2-3 feet in height. However, they were smart…some scientist believe they were among the smartest dinosaurs to roam the planet. Including Dr. Grant-“

“Oh, ya I talked to him before I assembled this team, he seems to know what he is talking about when it comes to this particular species.”

“Anyway,” Chris seemed to almost completely ignore what Rick had just said, “They were pack hunters…I along with others believe they had coordinated attack plans, which allowed them to take down animals much bigger then them. Perhaps even up to four times there size.”

“When did they hunt?” Hunter questioned.

“No one knows for sure,” Christopher responded, “However, I believe they were Night stalkers…”

“Hm…” Hunter interrupted, “Rick are we deep enough into the jungle? I mean is this where you suspect they would be?”

    “Yes, somewhere around here-“

“Great, how about you and I go on a little Night hunt? See if we can find a trace of them,” he thought for a moment, “But before we go I might want to hand out weapons and ammunition to the group.”

    “Sounds good.”

Rick followed Hunter to his tent where he found a crate full of weapons and ammunition. Rick picked out a handgun for himself a Smith and Wesson .45 caliber Tactical pistol that could pack a punch. Hunter grabbed a long barreled shotgun. Minutes later they had handed out weapons to the entire group and where heading into the jungles…

(AC) I have always tried to correct mistakes that were in the movies by adding the most logical conclusions into my stories. In this story, I state the truth about velociraptors saying that they are only about 3 feet in height. Later though I present a raptor that is the size of a man, however in doing this I show that Hammond mutated these animals and they weren’t exactly accurate

“Wait! Please,” Samuel was running toward them, “Sorry, mind if I come? Well, I want to finish eating my disappointing meal first but after I could take a few of the members and catch up with you…”

“That’s fine,” said Hunter, “Just make sure you don’t sneak up on us or something,” he waved the shotgun in front of Sam’s face, “I don’t want to put a bunch of holes in you.”

“Right…. I guess I will catch you guys later.”

With that, he turned around and head back towards the camp and Rick and Hunter moved on. They traveled deep into the jungles; in fact, they went an hour’s distance in before Sam caught up with them. Thomas, Chris, Doug and Tara accompanied him. They joined the group after exchanging a few comments and the search went on…

After a disappointing two-hour journey in darkness, the group headed back to the camp to catch some sleep. The would need it if they wanted to travel tomorrow. Rick tried to strike up a conversation with Tara as they were approaching the camp.

“Sorry about earlier, I didn’t mean to intrude.”

She smiled at him, “I’m the one that should be sorry, I was frustrated and took my anger out on you. No hard feelings?”

“None,” Rick got excited perhaps she was interested in him, “Tell me, what do you do for a living?”

Before Tara could answer, deafening gunshots echoed throughout the jungle followed by screams of terror and then more gunshots. It was coming from Base Camp. All of the members with Rick turned and ran in the direction of the noise, leading the group was Hunter Lucas, shotgun raised…

They burst through the foliage of the jungle into a small clearing where they had set up base camp, across the way they could see an animal perhaps 6 feet in height dragging a carcass into the jungle. Hunter fired of two rounds in its general direction, but the animal had gotten away. Hunter quickly ran across the opening in the direction of the animal.

“Search the camp! I’ll be back in a minute!”

Moments later he entered the jungle and all were silent. Rick led the group into the camp and that is when he saw the mess. Blood was smeared along the side one of the tents and inside laid the mutilated remains of Brian Johnson, his stomach had been sliced open and his intestines lay outside of it on the floor, across the way was the body of Jeff he too had a slice, his was located across the throat and down the chest. Some of the squeamish members in the group ran out and hurled in some bushes. It was a disgusting sight to look at indeed.

“Chris! What in the hell did this?” Rick asked.

“Good Lord, these are raptor slashes! I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would experience something like this…”

“Did you see the size of the animal though? It was as tall as me…”

“Yes, that’s what’s interesting. My first thought was that it was an Utahraptor. However, Utahraptors were taller then that. Maybe it was a juvenile. What ever it was though it was quite odd.”

“Ya…” Rick got up from a knelt position over Jeff’s body just as Hunter Lucas came walking back, “Did you get it?”

“No,” Hunter responded, “But it dropped its kill as soon as I gave chase. It was John, I spotted another one across the clearing but it was to far away. Damn thing…”

“My god…we have lost almost a third of our group in just one night!”

“Ya, you all can get some sleep,” Hunter said, “I’ll stand guard.”

No one argued they just dispersed but not before looking at the disgusting remains of there fellow group members one last time…

(AC) Once again I try to make scientific decisions about the sizes of the animals. Now this action seen was not very detailed and I did this on purpose. I wanted to show how deadly these animals were; they attack quickly and then disperse even more quickly. I will admit that this definitely is not my best writing and it bothers me, I have tried to clean this story up multiple times but it is too much of a project for me, so I will just let it stand unaltered

    CHAPTER 4…

The next morning Rick awoke early eager and scared. He wanted to put the sickening thoughts of the previous night behind him and start a new day. Rick had not gotten to know the three members of his team well, before they were killed. Even so, he felt a great deal of shame and regret. They were innocent people who were just looking for excitement in the unknown…and now they were dead. Rick walked outside and saw that Hunter Lucas was sleeping. The sun was just creeping over the tops of the trees. Rick walked over and kicked Hunters leg.

Hunter jerked and grabbed his gun but soon realized it was just Rick. He smiled sheepishly.

“Good morning, I guess I fell asleep towards the wee morning hours, sorry.”

“It isn’t a problem however, I think we should move the group forward. I have a feeling it is not safe to stay in the same spot. Oh, and make sure everyone has a weapon of some kind.”

“Sure thing, when do you want everybody up and moving?”

“Now,” Rick turned back towards his tent, “and make sure we leave the main tent standing, that’s where we will meet it someone becomes separated.”

    “Alright.”

Within 15 minutes the entire group was up and moving, heading in the same direction that they had seen the group of animals run towards the night before. Each step was a cautious one, they knew what these animals could do and wanted to be prepared for any attack that could be made against them.

Rick led the pack followed closely by Hunter, who was the group’s main chance of survival if something went wrong. Hour-by-Hour the group trudged on until Rick came across something that he believed was worth stopping over. He told everyone to take a break and then called Chris over. Beneath Rick’s feet were tracks that looked like it belong to a bird only problem was, they were the size of a large animals…

“What do you think it is Chris?”

“Definitely peculiar tracks but judging by the way those things moved last night I’d say it belongs to them.”

“Could they be nearby? How long would tracks like this be visible?”

    Chris thought for a moment.

“Well, judging on the area we are in I would have to say that these prints wouldn’t last very long so chances are that these animals were just here,” he looked up nervously, “They could be anywhere in this particular area. I suggest we proceed cautiously.”

“Ok, thanks…Breaks over you guys,” he looked at Tara, “and girls”

She smiled and got up from a tree stump she had been sitting on and then followed in line along with the others. Tara moved her way up until she was along side Rick. Neither said a word, but they just continued. It was almost soothing to be in each other’s presence. Typical jungle sounds filled the air, suddenly something moved abruptly in the brush near by. Rick signaled the group to drop as he raised his pistol. There in the bushes was a jaguar staring at him intently.

The feline hissed and jumped out of the brush, it made a leap towards Rick. Stiller was about to fire but something else burst out of the foliage and tackled the jaguar. It was tall and had leathery skin like a reptile. It slashed at the jaguar but the jaguar had rolled to the side and sat in an offensive position. The Raptor, which Rick was sure it was by now, hissed and lowered its body so that it was only a few feet off the ground.

The raptor brought its front arms up in and awkward position and prepared to attack. Rick spared a glance at the rest of his group, they were all watching this intently. Apparently, the raptor had not noticed the group of humans it was too focused on the jaguar now. The raptor leapt nearly 3 feet off the ground and land on the jaguar, but the jaguar was faster it slashed with its claws making a wound appear on the raptor’s snout. It roared in agony then fell onto its back, the jaguar jumped on top of the raptor and was about to make a fatal attack, when suddenly a second raptor appeared from the brush and tackled the jaguar.

Rick knew he had better get moving, but he had to get a photo of these creatures first. Silently he slid his camera from out of his backpack and took a couple quick shots of the predators, he then signaled for the group to head back to base camp. Meanwhile the battle between the raptors and jaguar raged on.

Once they were out of range of the animals they ran like hell. 40 minutes later, they arrived at the camp and the group chattered amongst each other about what they had just seen. Rick, was ecstatic he had photographic proof of the animals existence. Now he could radio the helicopters to pick him and his team up. He would then present this evidence to wildlife groups, paleontologist and the national media. He would then get the proper equipment and come back to capture a live animal. However, for now he was satisfied. The mission was a success. Minutes later he called for the helicopters and they said they would be able to arrive within two hours.

(AC) Rick realizes that he has what he came to get and now he needs to get out of the jungles before anybody else is hurt. To him this is an extraordinary find and he is amazed. Now I wanted to put this battle between the jaguar and the raptors into it because, personally, I have always been curious how these raptors would fair against modern day beasts.

It was also used for a break in the boring walking and discussion that was going on. Finally, it was a great way to introduce the raptors and allow the scientists to make there predictions as to what animal it really was

Hunter Lucas walked over after sometime followed closely by Thomas Brooks.

“Congratulations, Rick,” said Thomas as Hunter nodded his head, “This is truly a discovery that happens only once in a blue moon.”

“More like once in a century,” Rick grinned childishly.

    “When are the choppers coming?”

“Within a couple hours, no need to worry. We will be out of here in no time,” said Rick.

Rick was right, after almost two hours exactly the helicopters arrived and picked up the seven members that were left. Rick knew whom the first person he would show the pictures to Dr. Alan Grant, he would absolutely amazed, Rick thought. The choppers lifted off the ground and took off towards the horizon.

    Two Days Later:

“Good God,” Dr. Grant stood looking over the images Rick Stiller had just sent him through a fax, he could not believe what he was seeing it was like something out of a nightmare.

Grant was talking to Rick on the phone as he looked at the photos.

“Where in the hell did you take these?” he questioned.

“In the jungles of Costa Rica. Can you believe it? Have you ever seen anything like this before,” silence… “I have all sorts of interviews with the biggest stations lined up. This will make that animatronics theme park Hammond was making look like a kiddy ride…”

Grant stood for moment thinking; perhaps it was safe to tell him….

“Uh, Rick? I have something to tell you, you may not believe it but….”

15 minutes later Rick was the one that stood not believing what he was hearing.

“So you think that they might have gotten off the ship and swam to shore?”

“Yes, I remember when we called the boat to turn around it was probably within a 100 feet of the dock. All this time I thought I had called it in time. However, now we know what really happened.

“So do you think Mr. Levine is on Isla Nublar then? Remember he said he was onto something too…”

“No,” the answer was quick and abrupt, “All of the dinosaurs on Isla Nublar were destroyed after the incident. In fact, I had to be contained in Costa Rica until they were destroyed. They were afraid I would tell the press, which I would have done. But by the time I was released my story had lost its credibility.”

“I see…could there be another island?”

Grant paused to think this over, “Hm, when I was on the island we were never shown a place where they actually raised the animals. All they showed were them being born. There is a possibility that there is another island where the dinosaurs bred and then were raised. Yes…that would make sense…”

“Do you know where it is? I have to contact Levine, its likely he is there…”

“No, I don’t know where it is but chances are if Levine is on that island he is already dead…”

Rick, knew he had to do something…wait he could talk to Jake! “I have to go Dr. Grant thank you for everything….”

“Alright Mr. Stiller, don’t be afraid to call if you need information. Nice talking to you…”

With that Rick hung up and prepared to visit Jake once again, this time to get the entire truth about what had happened to him and his wife 5 years ago. Jake would have to answer truthfully this time, lives hung in the balance…

(AC) I thought that this was another strange twist. Rick calls Grant and finds out that the animals that were in the jungles actually came from an island of the coast of Costa Rica. I used that portion of the Jurassic Park novel where Grant stops the boat with the raptors on it before it reaches the docks and I manipulated it so that the raptors had indeed escaped off of the boat and reached the mainland

Hours later Rick arrived at Jakes house; the sun was setting as he knocked on the door. Jake answered the door quickly and was surprised to see Rick. After saying hello, Rick was invited into the house just as he was a few days ago and both men sat and began to talk…

“So, Rick, I thought you were heading out in search of the Lost World. What happened?” question Jake.

“I found it…in fact I have photographic proof.”

“Oh, so I guess you found your way to Sorna…”

    “Sorna?”

“Yes, Isla Sorna isn’t that where you found the animals?” when Rick didn’t respond Jake became even more curious, “Where did you go, if it wasn’t Isla Sorna?”

“Actually Jake, I went into the Costa Rican jungles. That is where I found the animals; however, I have a reason why they are there. Dr. Grant told me a story about an Island called Isla Nublar. Apparently, there was a dinosaur “Theme Park” there entitled…Jurassic Park. Alan went there to approve the place but something went wrong and a few dinos escaped.” He paused, “I came here to question you about the existence of another island, however, I believe you have already answered that question…”

    Jake sat astonished.

“Yes, I found out the same information as you when I landed on the island, a man actually saved me and tried to give my wife medical treatment…that didn’t work though.” He lowered his head for a moment, “Anyway, he took me to some sort of facility or compound and that is where I found out that the island was actually a SITE B, where they breed and raised the animals before shipping them to Nublar.”

“I see, so is the place still up and running?”

“Probably, though I can’t say for sure it is entirely possible they abandoned the site after I got off…Though, I do remember a man, named Patrick, speaking about the shipping of dinosaurs to Nublar resuming.”

Rick pondered over this for a second, “Dr. Grant told me all of the animals on Nublar were destroyed. However, this was supposed to have happened back sometime ago, I trust you were there more recently then him.”

“Yes, I am sure there were dinosaurs shipped back to Nublar, that is for without a doubt, I can’t confirm it is still happening though…”

“Very interesting…though that isn’t my concern right now. I need to get to the island to help Mr. Levine. He is there I know it. Would you come along with me?”

Jake didn’t even think…”No, there is no way I am going back to that island. It is a living hell. I will however give you the coordinates to the island. I tracked, it is located in a chain of islands known as “Los Cincos Muertes” , the five deaths.”

“Really, do I need many people to join me?”

“I’d say no, surprisingly I would have to say lower numbers of people will work to your advantage. Be sure to arrive armed…just in case.”

Rick stood abruptly, “Is there anything else I need to know Jake?”

“No, I believe you know the rest since you have encountered one of the animals before…by the way, what animal did you see?”

    “Velociraptor.”

Jake froze for a second almost with fear, “It was large, uh? About the size of a man?”

“Yes…it was strange, because Velociraptors were supposed to be no taller then 3 feet.”

“You’ve got to remember, Rick, that these creatures were genetically engineered, they aren’t the real thing…”

“I suppose you are right,” Rick looked down at his watch, “I’ve got to be going, I will contact you as soon as I get back, and thanks for all the information.”

“No problem…and Rick…be careful, it’s not going to be like a walk in the park.”

Rick turned back to Jake slowly, “I will…”

(AC) Once again Rick relies on his old friend Jake Gravision to get answers. This time though, Jake opens up even more information then before, regarding the islands and the animals. This was a difficult scene to write because if I didn’t do it correctly I think it would have shown Jake as a weak person, which he is not…I think it came off well though and allowed the readers to understand Jake’s character a little better. I know that I even learned things about Jake, HeHe

    **************************************************
    CHAPTER 5…

Two days later, after contacting Hunter Lucas and Tara Brindley once again, Rick found his way to the island. Hunter and Tara both accepted to come on the journey and they packed weapons and ammo. The flight over to the island had been a rough one because of poor weather. They had arrived on the island at around midday and were looking for clues as to where Levine had gone. Eventually they found the trailers that were destroyed and then followed tire tracks until they got to a compound.

Rick Stiller was afraid that something had happened to Levine. He had also found out that Levine had not come to the island alone, all of their findings thus far showed that there were other people on the journey with him. Rick was now riding in a jeep, which they had brought over with them, through the compound. He was returning to the room that they had slept in the previous night. Rick pulled up next to a huge building marked SITE B and got out of the jeep.

(AC) I know this section jumps around quite a bit so I am going to try to explain some of this for you. The group goes to Sorna now because they fear that Levine is in danger. This section of the story took a long time because I had to read the last chapters of TLW many times to make sure I was not contradicting anything that was written. I think it came off well and even impressed some readers, when they saw how I mixed things up!

He entered the building and made his way into one of the many abandoned rooms. Hunter was talking to Tara and he looked up.

    “Well, anything?”

“No,” Rick said, “However, the entire island is abandoned…Jake was right.”

“Did you encounter any dinosaurs during your search?”

“Yes, one I’m not sure what it was though, it looked to be a some sort of fish-eater, possibly a Spinosaurus. I think it was a juvenile though; it did not look too big. I was lucky to have spotted it though, it was staying close to a river, I don’t think it would have given me a problem.”

“Do you think Levine, spotted it while he was here?”

“No, I think that is unlikely.”

Hunter shrugged and resumed his conversation with Tara, suddenly they heard a scream. All of them stood and ran towards the sound; it was across the compound some distance in an area they really had not looked over quite yet. When they got to the area where the sound came from there was no one there.

There was a room though, with a door that was swung wide open. Rick, cautiously made his was to the door. He could hear something inside, moving around…

    “Levine? Is that you?”

He moved around the corner and into the room, there in front of him stood three raptors scratching at a secret hatch that led into the ground. The immediately stopped what they were doing and looked up.

    “Oh shit…”

Rick turned and ran from the room as fast as he could. Behind him, he could hear the animals following. As Rick exited the room, he could see Tara and Hunter making there way in his direction.

    “Is there-“

    “RUN!” Rick screamed.

They did not need him to say another word, they both turned and started to run as well, but Hunter tripped on something and fell to the ground as he dropped his gun. Rick stopped and looked back…the raptors were coming, but he could not leave Hunter.

“Keep going Tara, around the other side the building I think there is a dock there, make for one of the boats and wait for us!”

    She nodded and continued running.

Rick ran back towards Hunter and reached his gun just as the Raptors were about to pounce. Rick grabbed the gun and fired a shell at the first Raptor. The round caught it in the forehead and knocked it backwards. It flew into one of the other raptors. Rick pulled Hunter off the ground and they both ran in the direction where Tara was headed. Rick spared one glance back and saw that the Raptors had stopped and were actually feeding on the dead raptor…

Rick continued to run as fast as he could, Hunter was right behind him. They entered foliage as the rounded the other side of the compound towards the ocean. Rick could hear the waves ahead of him, and then he caught sight of the dock and…a boat! It was leaving and heading out towards the sea.

Rick picked up the pace but heard Hunter yell something to him, and then he felt a pain in his back and was consumed by darkness.

(AC) I added the Spinosaur just to explain that it WAS on the island when the events of TLW took place, its just that the group never encountered it because it was still a young juvenile...

Tara Brindley made her way through the foliage at lightning speed until she came to an opening where the land met the water. Ahead, she could see a boat, a small one at that, leaving the dock. She screamed at the top over her lungs. Inside the boat she could see someone look back…he quickly turned and tapped the boats drivers shoulder, which then looked back as well. Moments later the boat made a 180-degree turn and was heading back toward the shore.

Within a minute the boat had reached the dock, a tall skinny man jumped out along with another man dressed in black.

“Who the hell are you?” the skinny man asked.

“Tara Brindley, you must be Richard Levine…”

    “Yes…”

“I’m here with Rick Stiller, we came to get you off this island but I guess you took care of yourself just fine. We just encountered velociraptors and barely got away. Rick should be coming just now…”

“Well, I’ll be damned, you are a tad to late my dear, but it is welcome to know someone was concerned for me.”

The man next to him spoke…

“Well, ah what do you think I came here for Richard, um…did you think I wanted to vacation?”

“Shut up Malcolm,” he looked towards the jungle, “I think that is Stiller now…”

A man did come out of the jungle but it was not Rick, it was Hunter, he looked dazed and confused. Then he shouted…

“Rick-“ he could not finish the sentence something large came bursting out of the jungle. However, it was not too large, it still was large enough to bite Hunter in his middle section and throw him against a tree.

    Tara screamed.

“What in the hell is that?” shouted Malcolm.

“Good lord, it’s a juvenile Spinosaur, how’d we miss that?”

The group of people jumped into the boat and watched, they knew there was nothing they could do…Tara was crying hysterically and went below deck, with the women called Sarah Harding. Richard and Ian sat silently,

“You know, we have to go for Rick…” Levine said.

“No, I am not going you can go yourself. Did you see that thing that just came out? It is probably still lurking in this vicinity.”

“Malcolm! My friend is in there, and that thing is nothing compared to those two Rex’s we encountered just the other day. I am going for Rick. Besides it has just eaten it won’t bother us…”

(AC) The fun part about this was getting to write Malcolm’s character. I tried to express more of Jeff Goldblum then the novels did. Therefore, I added the “Um…Ah…” type of speaking to his character so that you, the reader, would recognize his character immediately. Just another one of the interesting things I tried to add to this story!

    **************************************************
    FINALE…

Rick came back to consciousness in a daze; he knew he had not been out for long. However, he was afraid that he had broken some bones. Slowly he stood and realized that everything was fine. He knew he had to get to the shore; hopefully it was not too late.

He walked for just a few minutes until he came to a clearing and there in front of him was the dock and a boat…and Levine! Rick stumbled forward and fell, he was too weak. He was bleeding badly and he hurt like hell, something had hit him hard, Levine came running up.

“Oh know…Malcolm help me get him on board.”

Rick could not say anything, he just allowed the two men to pull him aboard the but where Tara was, there was no sign of Hunter. Did he make it? It did not look like it…Rick felt grief, Hunter had been killed and he was nearly dead himself. He could hear the engines start on the boat and felt it pull away into the sea. Blackness was overtaking him…

He looked to his left and saw Tara crying as she looked at him. He was not sure if he was going to make it. However, he was not worried about that, he was just glad that if he died he would die around friends and not alone on that island. Slowly the blackness surrounded him and he finally embarrassed it, almost as he would do to an old friend.

Rick did not know if he would wake up alive or dead, or if he would, even wake up ever again…thus was the mystery of death. In his final moments of consciousness he could see the trees on the distant shoreline swaying…back and forth…Finally there was a burst of light…and then darkness…

(AC) Once again the ending of my story is sad and hopeless. Some people thought that Rick would end up dying, which is good, cause that is the effect I was going for. I think killing Stephanie in “Death Has No Regret” really helped establish me as a writer that would do anything. So when readers read this for the first time they really weren’t sure whether or not he was dead. That’s really interesting and important, cause it keeps the reader on the edge of there seat. Thanks for reading this story…

Thus ends the STORY and AUTHOR COMMENTARY and we now move on to further Special Features…

    Rejected Storylines:
    1) Originally, this story was going to take place completely in the jungles of Costa Rica…However I soon ran into a fault. I had no excuse as to why the animals were there. In the first draft, I wrote our heroes find an abandoned InGen compound and that is where they learn of the mutation of the raptors. I did change that though…

In this story, they have a scientist that accompanies them, and he states that these animals are indeed mutated velociraptors. Jake Gravision also acknowledges that they are mutated as well…so I tried to get my facts straight.

    2) In the second draft they were still only in the jungles of Costa Rica…but in this draft nobody survived and I wrote up a scene where the raptors moved out of the edge of the jungles and began to enter the villages. I thought this was too dark of a story though so I eventually changed it.

    3) The final draft that I had in mind was to actually write an entire story about Jake Gravision and what happened to him after the death of his wife. I soon dropped the whole idea because it was too much of an emotional story, but I knew that I couldn’t drop Jake completely from the story so I decided to give him two cameos in which he talks to Rick about the island and the death of his wife.

    Author Interview…Conducted by CarnaRaptor:
(CR) Did you publish this story with the idea that it would be as good as Death Has No Regret?

Icebreaker: Actually I am not sure…I felt confident that it would be a success because of the way Death Has No Regret was received but I never really thought it would match DHNR. Unfortunately, I was right, because this story did poorly to start.

(CR) Did you face any problems in writing this story?
Well I think that everyone has problems when they are writing a story, so yes…I did have problems. I think the biggest problem was where to take this story in terms of the mood and setting. It took me a while to develop a plot that made sense, because I was trying to intertwine the TLW novel in the story.

(CR) You are a very well known writer here at DJP3P, do you believe that you are a great yourself?
Icebreaker: Well I do recognize that I am a well known author on this site, however I do not feel that I am great…I mean I am a huge fan of Vader and Jurassiclaw (amongst many others) and I constantly remind myself that I am nowhere near there level of genius (HeHe)

(CR) How did the idea of this story come about?
Icebreaker: Well this story line was actually considered for DHNR but was dropped because I wanted to develop a more emotional storyline. However, I think I did have to take a long time to come up with an appropriate ending that I felt matched DHNR in terms of drama

(CR) Do you have any inspiring words of advice to new Fan-Fiction authors?
Icebreaker: Hm…I am not sure, I guess my biggest piece of advice that I can dish out is that you need to develop your storyline before you actually sit down and write. It always helps…HeHe

(CR) Do you consider this your best work?
Icebreaker: To be honest…No, in fact I think it is far from it. I believe this is my most disliked work because I feel as though I rushed it. ORIGIN and MISCONCEPTIONS are two stories I put my most pride in. However I do think this story still stands out as one of the better on this site

(CR) What made you come up with the title “Once in a Blue Moon?”
Icebreaker: It comes from an old saying that refers to how rare an occurrence is and I thought it fitted this storyline because the events that took place were very rare indeed…Thus, you might say they would only happen “Once in a Blue Moon” LoL

(CR) What do you attribute the success of this story too?
Icebreaker: Good old fashioned hard work and the fans of course!

(CR) Were there any other story lines you had planned for this story?
Icebreaker: Instead of answering this question in length I will just refer the reader to the portion of the Special Editions above entitled “Rejected Storylines”

(CR) After the success of DHNR, were you surprised by the outcome of OIABM?
Icebreaker: Yes…I was very disappointed with the way this story was accepted in its first release, however I do hope that people will enjoy it during its second release, especially in its new format! Thanks for the interview!
