The idea for the Dilophosaurus' fan in Jurassic Park was based on the Frilled Lizard of Australia, which is known to take a bipedal stance and run while displaying it's fan as a means of defense and intimidation. (From: 'Dilophosaurus')

    Opening Comments:
This particular story was always in mind for me…I loved the idea of revenge and I thought we needed to see something like that in the JP saga. After the failure of “Once in a Blue Moon” in terms of responses I decided that I need a more straightforward action story that involved shootouts and other fast paced action. So when sitting down to begin work with this story, I thought about one thing in particular, who should be the main character?

Originally Rick was supposed to have been killed at the end of OIABM and this story was supposed to revolve around Jake taking his final vengeance against the island that killed his wife and best friend but I dropped that idea because I never really saw Jake as an aggressor. Rick on the other hand always was a determined character in my mind and I thought that the story would be better if it was HIM going to the island.

The plot of this story is very thin…it is about a man that knows InGen is reforming and wants to stop it. That is pretty much it; the side plot is that the reason he wants to stop it is how he was almost killed by the animals on the island. I think this story is very entertaining though, cause you really feel for the character of Rick and want him to succeed in his attempts to stop the rebuilding of the park.

There is also a transition that is present throughout the “Rising Tyrant” saga and that is the first story is about Jake, the second is about Rick AND Jake and the last is about Rick. You can see the very slow transfer regarding the main character of the trilogy and I thought that was another important aspect to put into the story.

I actually started writing this story thinking that is was going to gross more then OIABM and even DHNR…and once again, I was completely wrong! This is the lowest grossing story I have written to date though personally I think it is one of the better I have written. I think though, that the reason it did not do well was because of the lack of promotion. I only posted ONE trailer and that was about it.

This is also the shortest story I have EVER written…the actually story itself clocks in at about 15 pages in length which is very short to the average length I write, which is about 25-30 pages. However I think the length of this particular story works well because the reader can read it in a short amount of time without getting bored. It may also help to generate more comments then I usually get because people will actually be willing to sit and read the story that I have written for them : )

In this Special Edition you will find no changes to the original story…only Authors Commentary (AC) and other interesting tid-bits about the story that I wrote. At the end of the story there will be additional features including rejected storylines, deleted scenes, trailers and more! So sit back, relax and enjoy:

    CHAPTER 1…

The night’s sky was darkening and the thunderous waves pounded against the side of the boat, almost causing it to capsize. Rick Stiller sat anxiously below deck as the waves punished the boats bow and sides. He was putting on his backpack and holstering a handgun, it was almost time for him to embark on yet another journey, this time it was not for fun, but for vengeance. Six months earlier, he had been in a hospital bed, lifeless and near death, however he managed to pull through and he ended up surviving.

He had received deadly injuries when he had tried to save his friend, Richard Levine, who had ventured off to Isla Sorna in search of dinosaurs. Levine ended up being the one who saved Rick. He was nearly killed when a juvenile Spinosaur trampled over him, as he was running through the jungle. Luckily, for Rick, he was able to make it to Levine’s boat and was shortly rescued and taken for medical care.

Now he was going to another island, this time alone and to stop the madness that started so many years back, by John Hammond. After, recovering from his extensive injures he spoke with his good friend Jake Gravision, once more. They spoke about the existence of another theme park, being built in place of the original one Hammond intended to share with the public. However, things went wrong and the park was closed, and the dinosaurs destroyed.

Rick and Jake, however, concluded that shortly after the destruction of the dinosaurs on the island, work began once again on SITE B and the animals were shipped back to Isla Nublar. Then, SITE B was closed once the park was full…the island, Isla Sorna, was then abandoned even though wild dinosaurs still roamed. By now the main Park, would possibly be ready for an opening. Rick knew he had to figure out what was going on for sure and stop it. It was too dangerous for the public.

As Rick finished getting ready, he walked up to the top deck of the boat and stood next to the captain. They both stood in silence as he maneuvered the boat close to the shore of the island. It was difficult because of the rough weather but eventually the man got the boat within 200 feet of the shore. Rick thanked the man, hurried to the stern of the boat, and jumped into a small raft that he would take to shore. Stiller cut the rope that held the raft and he gently drifted away from the boat towards the shore. He gave one last wave to the captain and then turned his attention to handling the rough seas.

(AC)I think this opening chapter really sets the mood of the entire story. I tried to make it dark and hateful. So I added the crashing waves and rough seas…You’ll also notice that the character of Rick is much more hardened. He carries weapons now and is never short of supplies. Rick is a determined man and I think that is a very good aspect of his character. The descriptions of how he survived and such are not very detailed but they get to the point

Ten minutes later, Rick was beached on the shore and he quietly pulled the raft onto the beach and hid it in some bushes along the shore. He knew both dinosaurs and humans inhabited the island and he did not want to be caught by either. Surprisingly the animals were not the main concern, they were locked in cages. The humans on the other hand were the threat…they could not know he was there.

Rick hid the raft and then took off his backpack; he gently placed it on the ground and unzipped the top part. Inside was a bunch of miscellaneous materials that he had hoped would come in handy. He was looking for a piece of paper that Dr. Grant had sent him. On that piece of paper was a detailed description of the island and where things were located…

Eventually he found it and opened it, using a flashlight he read. According to what it said here, there was a road somewhere along this shoreline that led to a helicopter pad. From there, he could make his way into the park and towards the main compound. After the compound, he could then journey along the perimeter of the park by the animal’s cages and he would not be in any danger.

He quickly put away his things, pulled out his weapon and began his journey along the shoreline towards the road that led to the chopper pad. Rick got to the road in close to 15 minutes and then continued along it until he made his way to the helicopter pad.

The helicopter pad was old and not well maintained, however, despite the overgrowth of plants on and around it he could tell that it had seen some use recently. It was hard to see in the night. Along the far side of the road there were huge perimeter fences, which were probably electrocuted, that led into the actual park. Directly in front of him was a non-conducting gate that could be opened. Stiller pushed on it quietly and it creaked, as it swung open. Rick stepped inside of it and then shut it. The inside section of the fences were no different then the outside, except that now he was officially in the park.

Stiller now felt a rush of adrenaline; he was inside and ready for anything…in the distance he could hear a spine-chilling howl. There were dinosaurs on this island. Rick silently slid his weapon out of it’s holster and brought it up to chest level, he knew that it was highly unlikely that any creatures could be wandering the park outside of cages, but he wanted to be cautious and that’s why he had elected to remove his firearm.

Ahead of him was a dirt road that spiraled into a valley that would eventually lead to the main compound on the island, along the way there would be sheds for weapons and other miscellaneous things. Rick would hug the road until he got to the compound. Stiller began to walk along the dirt road, gun in hand, though slightly lowered near his hip. The night air felt clean and crisp; as he walked, he could feel a small gust blow through his hair…

(AC) This was a fun section of the story for me too write because it is a return to Isla Nublar that I am sure many fans wanted to see…I liked adding all the features of the island that we saw in Jurassic Park, except now with over-growth and wear to them. It was just a very fun experience to go back and add these little features

He continued on the rest of that night and by the time it was dawn he was just reaching the entrance road that led into the compound itself. In the distance he could see the darkened outline of the main building as the sun rose on it’s opposite side it cast an orange glow over Rick, warming his body…he was tired, but couldn’t rest here it was far to much into the open.

Rick wandered off the road and across a large clearing perhaps 500 yards from the main building, after that he walked down a small slope towards a man made lake, perhaps the size of several football fields in both length and width. Along the river were small bushes that came up to Rick’s knees. Stiller trudged his way over to them and laid down, they were surprisingly soft. He knew he was close to the main building and felt very secure, knowing that the animals were in there cages…the only thing he was afraid of was being discovered by a worker on the island. Those thoughts were becoming more distant as he yawned. He was tired and within a minute, he was asleep amongst the bushes and grass that made there way along the artificial shore.

A small stegosaurus walked along the waterline feeling quite satisfied after its sipping of water it eventually made its way toward a small shaded area with bushes and grass…it was about to lay down when it smelt the presence of another animal. It sniffed the air cautiously and soon realized that this other animal presented no danger to itself. Lazily the creature walked into the bushes and gently laid down, it was a juvenile.

A little less then 15 feet away Rick awoke abruptly, he sensed a presence near him. Within a second he was on his feet with his gun drawn, directly in front of him lay the massive body of a juvenile Stego. Rick was not frightened by this creature because he knew it was harmless, he was, however, afraid because this proved that some animals were roaming the island freely. He doubted that any predators were on the loose, but knew that some of the herbivores could be dangerous if pushed the wrong way.

Reluctantly Rick woke himself up completely and looked at his watch, it was 11:00 a.m. That meant that he had slept nearly six hours. He yawned…Well, he thought, I might was well make my way back up towards the main building.

The midday’s sun beat down on Rick but it was not hot, a cool breeze swept up through the valley cooling everything it touched. Stiller was now at the top of a hill that looked across the main road towards the main building. He lowered his body to the ground and lay patiently watching. Every few minutes a man or a woman would either enter or exit the building, those that exited usually got into one of the many jeeps that were parked around the area.

A short time later Rick felt that it was safe for him to precede, he got up and sprinted across the clearing towards the building. Then he crept along the sidewall that led towards the steps. He paused only for a moment before he hopped over the small wall and head up the stairs towards the main entrance even though it was midday he felt that this was the best time to enter the building, most people were to busy with there work to recognize and intruder. Rick slid inside the building entrance and took a quick look around. In the middle of the large entrance was fossils of prehistoric animals, along the far right side was a staircase that made it is way upward in a semi-circle fashion. To Stillers left there was a door marked EMPLOYEES.

He made his way over to the room and walked in, luckily there was nobody present in the room. Along the left side of the room was the dressing area for the employees; white overcoats were hung in order along the wall. Rick slid off his backpack and placed it on the floor behind a waste canister, hopefully nobody would find it by the time he got back…

(AC) As you can see I didn’t really waste much time getting to the meat of the story. Rick infiltrates the park and its security systems fairy quickly and easily. This shows that he is VERY determined and will not let anything get in his way. I also enjoyed writing this story from only one persons mindset because I was able to really get into the character and expand him

Then Rick walked and took off an overcoat off its hanger and put it on. He buttoned it halfway up his chest so that it concealed his firearm, then he casually checked himself in the mirror that was in front of him. He had a rough 2-day beard and his hair was a mess. Stiller brushed his hands through his hair until it looked somewhat reasonable. Before he left his room, he made sure that his backpack was safely positioned behind the canister, and then he strode confidently out of the room.

Rick was looking for the central computer area and where they hatched the young dinosaurs. He figured it would be on the main level, so he checked the completely opposite side of the of the entrance and found a hallway lined with pictures of prehistoric animals, eventually the hallway led into another large opening where scientist were working busily on all sorts of computers. Rick walked in as though he belonged there and then saw a small staircase in the back of the room. It led down to another hallway.

As he made his way to and then down the staircase he noticed that the wall on his right was silver and had large circular windows that looked into another room full of computers, this room, however, was much smaller then the one he had just been through and there were only a few employees working…

Rick opened up a large metallic door that led into the room and walked inside, immediately he was greeted by a tall man wearing the same style uniform as he was.

“Ah, good morning…” the man held out his hand but Rick ignored it, “I don’t seem to recognize you, can I help you find something?”

“Yes, actually you could. I’m looking for the mainframe computer, I was just called down here to fix a glitch that some of the guys were talking about.”

The man looked at him oddly, “Really? I wasn’t informed…oh well, could I see your identification.”

Rick made an act of searching his coat pockets and then finally dropped his hands at his side. Then looking as confused he spoke…”I’m afraid I may have misplaced it, hm… perhaps you can make me another one?”

Once again, the man looked at him oddly, and then seemed to shrug it off, “I suppose I could, how about you accompany me into the main room and we make you another card while you do your business on the computer?”

    “Sounds great…”

Rick followed the man into the room and prepared for his attack, hopefully they would be alone and he could take less violent actions against the man and be able to search the computer database. He knew as soon as the man went to verify Rick’s identification he would find out he was a fraud. Both men made there way into the room.

“Where’s the mainframe computer located?” Rick questioned.

“That one right there,” the man gestured towards a computer very close to him as he made his way to another computer close by…”Now, if I could have your name...”

Rick wasted no time he stepped up behind the man and removed his gun then in a lightning speed move he used the butt of his weapon to knock the man across the back of his head. He yelped and fell to the floor, without wasting another second Rick delivered a second blow across the mans head, this time knocking him unconscious.

Stiller knew he had not seriously injured the man, however, he would have one hell of a headache when he woke up. Rick bent down and removed the mans identification and headed towards the main computer that held all of the parks information. He quickly swiped the mans card across a keypad, as soon as the computer had verification of who was entering the computer he was allowed to search all of its files….

Hours later Rick had more then 20 pages of information regarding the parks illegal reopening, he slid those papers into his breast pocket located inside his jacket, then he quickly shut down the computer and was just beginning to stand up from the computer when he heard the door open.

In came three security guards all brandishing their weapons…

    “Freeze!”
Rick stood for a second and knew he was going to have to fight his way out of the building. In one swift move, Rick dropped to his knee and removed his gun from its holster. He fired two rounds at the nearest guard as he dove for cover behind a desk. Both of the shots missed and then all hell broke loose. The three guards returned fire, bullets ricocheted across the room and some found their way into the computer system.

Stiller was now in a precarious position, he was caught behind a desk and was sure that if he moved out from behind it he would be killed. He raised his gun over the top of the desk and fired another two rounds in the general direction of the guards. This time one of the bullets hit there, mark a guard yelped as he fell to the ground in agony as the bullet pierced his shoulder.

Now Rick was only worried about the other two guards. He rolled back out into the open in front of the main computer and unloaded the rest of his clip as he finally fell behind another desk. The guards returned fire, this time hitting the computer extensively…

Suddenly smoke rose from the computer and the lights started to flicker…the entire security system within Jurassic Park was failing now. The computer smoked even more and then finally parts began to explode and the lights within the entire building went out leaving Rick and the guards in pure blackness. This failure also did something else…it caused the safety fences that surrounded every dinosaur paddock to short circuit and fail…leaving the animals to roam freely anywhere the wanted, within a few hours all hell would break loose…

(AC) I knew that at least one of my trademarks in this story were not going to be able to be used, and that was sex. However, I was still able to incorporate the human drama and human action which I think really separates my stories from others. It also takes us away from the same old running away from dinosaur story line

    **************************************************
    CHAPTER 2…

Rick was now plunged into complete darkness; however, he could feel where the guards were located. Rick spun back and fired three shots in there generally location, the shots illuminated the room and was able to see there location for a split second, so he followed up with another series of shots this time hitting them dead on and knocking them to the darkened floor.

Now scrambling to his feet, Rick ran across the room towards the door. It took him a moment to feel for it in the blackness. Eventually he got it open and was on his way through the regular computer area that had already been evacuated. Quickly he got through the rooms until he reached an exit. He slammed the door open and was greeted by the bright glow of the sun.

He was now on the south side of the building and this was facing out towards the back parking area where they kept the jeeps. Rick ran towards the nearest one he could find and got inside. Unfortunately, he could not risk going back into the building to get all of his equipment, not even his map…

The jeep was electric powered and didn’t have any keys so Rick was able to slam it into gear and take off out towards the front portion of the building. Employees were gathering outside and to them Rick was just one of them. He slowed down his speed so that he would be less recognizable. Suddenly gunfire erupted and bullets tore through his vehicle…

Security guards were in a jeep behind him and were closely following; one of the guards was leaning out of the window and firing an automatic weapon in Rick’s direction. Stiller turned left out onto the main road and was about to head out towards the direction he had originally come from but another jeep was heading down the road with even more security guards.

Rick slammed on his brakes and did a controlled skid while making a sharp left, so that now he was on the main road, but he was actually heading INTO the park and not out of it. He wanted to turn around but could not the cars behind him were in hot pursuit. Rick pushed the throttle down to the floor. He was now up to 90 M.P.H as he sped down the main road. Occasional gunfire was heard from behind but none of them was hitting their mark.

Rick continued down the road and looked into his rearview mirror, the jeeps behind we gaining…without a second thought Rick grabbed his gun, and stuck one of his arms out the window and unloaded an entire clip at the nearest Jeep. He had a tough time controlling the car but was still able to keep it going.

A few of the bullets hit the driver of one of the jeeps and it caused him to loose control and smash into a barrier…Now it was only one jeep Rick had to worry about, he reached out of his window once again and tried to fire blindly at the pursuing jeep. Suddenly his jeep hit a bump, it knocked his weapon out of his hand, and it went flying out the window. He was now completely vulnerable. Rick stayed calm though…

In one controlled move he turned the wheel of his car hard to the right and laid on the gas…this caused him to perform a reasonably good 180, so that the following jeep was heading right at him. Rick jumped out of the car was the driver of the following car tried to swerve out of the way.

Unfortunately, he clipped the back of Rick’s jeep and it sent him flying off the road down into a small valley. Rick however, was laying in the middle of the road gasping for air, he was bruised up quite a bit was in good condition other then that. Slowly he got up and headed for his jeep that was only slightly damaged from the guard clipping the backend of it.

He stumbled into the car and started its electric engine, it started up in a near silent, whir….and then he was on his way back in the direction he had come from…

(AC) That was a really short chapter and was mostly used as a way to set up Rick’s escape from the island. Of course things don’t always go as planned and that is why he has trouble escaping with ease. I was actually reluctant to have any of the security guards die because they really aren’t the bad guys here. But in the end I didn’t really have any concern about it

    **************************************************
    CHAPTER 3…

As Rick drove calmly around a final bend in the road before he reached the building he could see that chaos was everywhere, people were running out of the building screaming. He drove past the main building slowly trying to act as though nothing had happened.

Stiller knew he had better get off the island as quick as he could so once he made it past the building he put the pedal to the metal and speed back towards the main fences that lead out of the park, it was a long drive.

Halfway there he noticed that something was wrong, the fence along his right side was torn and gashed. There was a huge hole where something had ripped through it…Rick swallowed, he felt an overwhelming fear come over him. It looked as though something big had gotten out…

Rick did not slow…he drove past the fence quickly and continued on his way. Suddenly there was a tremendous roar and the jeep was smashed into. Rick had no idea what happened; suddenly the car was upside down. He yelled for help and then realized that it would do no good.

Something was attacking his vehicle and he could not see it. Suddenly there was a tremendous sound and then there was silence. Rick sat, or lay rather, upside down in the damaged vehicle and breathed deep breaths. There was silence. After what must have been quite sometime, Rick gathered up enough courage to climb outside his car…for some reason the great beast that attacked his car had left.

Stiller felt lonely and scared. Now he had to finish his journey on foot with no weapons (he lost it in the first incident in his jeep). Rick cursed, this had suddenly become a lot more dangerous. After a moment of silent thought, he decided that it would be best to start his journey as quickly as possible.

Bones ached and muscles screamed in protest, but Rick knew it was doing him no good to lie around when he could be moving. Slowly he got up and began to walk towards the perimeter fence that led to the front of the island; there he would find a boat waiting for him in 18 hours or so…

(AC) This portion of the story I wanted to really show that the animals were indeed just animals. So I changed the situation from Man vs. Man to Man vs. Nature and the animals, because I thought that was one thing that I lacked in my stories up to this point…

As Rick walked he stayed alert and ready for any surprise attacks. After a while he drifted into deep thought…why did he hate these islands so much? That was an easy answer he thought, after all the trouble, these islands had caused him, why should not he have been angry. No…these islands haven’t done anything to me…

He was confused now; by his own thoughts…what was it he was really doing? He did not hate the dinosaurs he hated the people that had created and then mistreated them. That is what this was all about.

He hoped that when he got back to the mainland he could persuade people to only take action against the people that built the park and not the helpless animals that lived there. It was going to be a challenge but he was sure that in time he would succeed…

Hours passed before Rick sat down against a small tree and took a break. He had be sure to stick right along the road that led back out of the park because he knew if he got off of it there was a possibility that he could not find his way back to the shore. The sun was still showing brightly over the island, but Rick knew that it would only be a matter of hours before it set and he would be pitched into blackness.

Rick got up and took a deep breath it was time to begin his journey once more.
The road in front of him was long and narrow; it curved slightly along the hillside as it gradually bent over a small hill…in the distance the sun was setting. Rick’s legs hurt as he staggered along down the road. He hoped that it would be soon that he reached the end of this journey.

Off to his right he could hear a rustling sound in a dense foliage area. It did not sound large but he was curious nonetheless, he walked over and bent down, out popped a small creature that Rick was able to immediately identify, it was a Compy. Rick knew from speaking with Dr. Grant and Jake that these small creatures had a slightly venomous poison, but he was not concerned…in fact, he seemed amused.

It looked as though it was a very inquisitive creature, its head bobbed up and down as it examined him, suddenly it chirped when it felt all was clear. More of these animals came out into the open, until there were nearly twenty of them. They all chirped…

Stiller laughed and stood back to his full size and smiled, they were a very interesting species…to bad he couldn’t stay and look at them longer, but he knew he must get outside the park and to his waiting boat. He took a few unhurried steps in the direction the road was leading. Behind him, he heard the creatures, following. As I said before he was not concerned and merely walked on…

Then out of nowhere the Compys became quite and suddenly scattered in every direction. Rick knew something was wrong and immediately jumped into nearby bush and laid low. As he lay in the bush, the only sound he could hear was the pounding of his heart. Then in the distance he heard a thump, not loud but audible. Moments later it was followed by another, then another…until they were much louder and nearer.

Stiller dare not move; he knew something was heading in his direction. The best thing to do was to stay still and pray for it to just pass. Within minutes, the pounding seemed like it was right on top of Rick, then he saw what it was…it was a Ceratoraus, it loomed over Rick like a large house. It was following the road and probably Rick’s scent, he knew this because he could see the animal sniffing the air. At one point, it bent directly over the bush that Stiller was hiding in and sniffed it. Before it could decide what it was going to do however, there was a deafening roar…not from the Ceratoraus but from something larger. The animal looked up quickly and seemed nervous.

Seconds later a Tyrannosaur came lumbering out of the forest and onto the road, it roared at the Ceratoraus, but the smaller animal did not budge…instead it roared back…Rick lost all of the fear he had seconds ago as he stared in amazement. The T-Rex took a few steps forward and actually turned its body and swung its tail slightly. The Ceratoraus stepped back and gave a weak roar. The Rex knew it now had the upper hand; it charged slightly and let out its loudest most ear-shattering roar, possible. The Ceratoraus, stumbled backwards and then made a fair paced retreat…

The Tyrannosaur looked on after the smaller dinosaur until it had fully retreated, then it gave a frustrated snort and walked back into the jungle…Stiller laid for a few minutes after just to be sure it was really gone, then he stood up and looked around cautiously. Slowly he made his way back onto the main road and once again continued his journey.

All the while, he was lost in thought; he was fascinated by the way, the animals handled each other. It was as though they wanted no confrontation…Rick’s opinion had just changed in those few moments. These are not monsters, he thought, just animals…nothing more…

Time crept on and so did the miles, now Rick could see the large fence down the road that separated the actually park from the islands shore. He could hear the crashing of the waterfall, which was located behind the abandoned helipad. Rick started to jog now…

Within a minute, he had reached the fences and the gate that led outside the park. He lifted that latch that held it shut and pushed hard. The gate swung open and then he was out, he quickly shut the door behind him and staggered towards the abandoned helipad, that was completely overrun by foliage. He lay down in the middle of it and took a deep breath; he had gotten out of the park, just in time. The sun had just set and darkness was everywhere, now he could lay and rest until the morning, when the boat would approach the shoreline, and he would have to steer his small boat out to meet it.

In the distance, he could hear soft hoots, howls, and at times shallow roars. Rick knew he was safe from the animals now; the towering fences protected him. Over a few minutes time Rick went from slightly drossy too dead asleep.

(AC) At this point I was still very upset about the T-Rex vs. Spino battle in JP /// and I wanted to change that…I couldn’t of course. However, I did the next best thing. I wrote this scene in where the animals really didn’t want to fight because they knew it would be very dangerous for the both of them. I just thought this was overall a more realistic scene then in the latest Jurassic Park movie.

    **************************************************
    CHAPTER 4…

It was not quite daybreak when Rick woke up, he yawned noisily and looked down at his watch, it was 5:00 am. The sound of the waterfall behind him made him relaxed everything was peaceful…Stiller stood and he stretched a bit to stop the aching in his muscles. He was about to get going towards the boat he had left in the bushes along the shore, when he heard a spine-tingling purring.

Rick knew the sound immediately, it was a Velociraptor. Yet, he had no idea where the sound was coming from. He backed up all the way to the small lake where the waterfall was pounding, that way the Raptor had no approach on him from the backside. In front of Rick was small clearing where the road started and across from it was trees and tall grass.

He knelt down low to the ground and watched the grass silently…the purring became slightly louder and then there were two sharp cries, followed by return responses…Rick knew he was in trouble…

At that moment, a Velociraptor stepped out of the grass and stood tall looking almost directly at Rick, and then slowly it bent down and sniffed the dirt at its clawed feet. It hissed a serious of sounds and then stood back up tall…two more raptors came out of the bushes.

Stiller's mouth was dry with fear; he had no idea what he was going to do. The predators were 20 yards away and were moving closer, they took long steps as stayed low to the ground, Rick was curious now…. something wasn’t right…

Suddenly all of his senses alerted him to something dangerous, without thinking, he flung himself backwards into the cold water. It was not a moment to soon, just as he did that a Velociraptor was jumping from Rick’s side towards him. It had snuck up on him while he watched the other three cautiously. Now though Stiller was in a bad situation.

The water was cold but he stayed calm. He treaded water as he swam backwards towards the waterfall. As he did so he could see the Raptors staring at him intently. After a few moments, Rick was at the waterfall and he pulled himself up onto a rock next to the water. From this rock the Raptors could make no attack on him, he was safe…

However, he was not completely safe, now he had to wait things out and it was a possibility that he would miss his boat. In front of him, he could see the Raptors were kneeling patiently on the ground, they knew as well as he did that it was impossible for him to escape without passing them…

Rick sat shivering on the rock, looking directly back at them…these creatures were most frightening he had encountered; even on his last journey, they had been the animals that frightened him most. It was because of their intelligence…they were arguable the most intelligent hunters in history and now it was up to Rick, to outsmart them or he would be killed. It was as simple as that. Rick had escaped many things in the past year or so…he had even escaped death. He knew that this would be the ultimate challenge and if he failed, he would pay with his life….

One of the Raptors became impatient and “barked” at him…it rose up from its knelt position and walked towards the water…suddenly a second raptor returned the “bark” and the first raptor reluctantly, returned to its knelt position. Stiller stared hard at them, then after a while he tilted his head back and closed his eyes…

Around a half hour, later Rick awoke from a short nap to find that the Raptors had left. Rick was smart though and realized that the Raptors were somewhere in the nearby area. However, time was running out and he needed to get to the boat. He scanned the area carefully and was unable to spot any sign of the Raptors…

It took him a while but eventually he thought of a plan and built up enough courage to attempt it. The plan was simple…run as fast as he could. Silently Rick slipped back into the water and gently swam back to the shore. When he got to the shore, he stepped onto the ground and then knelt, once again scanning the area. He knew it took him around 15 minutes to walk from his small boat to this area, so he estimated it would only take about 5 minutes if he ran.

Without a second thought, he jumped up and sprinted…he ran across onto the main road and down out the shore, behind him he heard a sharp screech and a howl. He did not look back, on he went…something was following him, he could hear it. For some reason though it did not come within view of Rick, so he ran on…

(AC) Once again this section of the story was written because I felt that the story makers of JP /// really lacked things that I was looking for. I always thought the raptors were smart but not THAT smart. So I decided to show that they were smart in terms of there ability to hunt, but that’s about it

In roughly 6 minutes he reached his small boat. He wasted no time; he picked it up and ran it down towards the shore. Rick threw the boat into the water and jumped inside of it, just as one of the Raptors tried to attack. It had been following him almost for fun but when it realized that Rick was possibly going to escape it made its attack. It missed terribly though, but managed to knock Rick’s boat over.

Stiller tumbled over the side as the boat capsized itself, the Raptor was in the water as well, trying to stay afloat. Rick kicked out his leg and caught the Raptors chest knocking it even more under water. Rick was losing the battle but luckily, a wave threw him against the shore.

The wind was knocked out of him for a moment but he knew he could not give up; the Raptor was regaining itself and was about to attack again. Rick brought himself up to one knee and then looked behind him. Another Raptor was running his way…Rick spun around just as the second Raptor jumped at him and kicked it across its back…that sent it sprawling across the sand and into the water. The first one was up now and ready it hissed and leapt high in the air and was preparing to deliver a killing blow to Rick when it landed. Stiller dove out of the way and landed in the water once more…

A wave broke on the shore and knocked him face forward into the sand, as the Raptor slid and turned to face Rick. Suddenly another wave hit the shore and the capsized boat rolled up next to Rick. He grabbed it and turned it around towards the water…

Just as the Raptor was about to attack, again he pushed the boat as hard as he could and leapt inside. The boat flung forward through another crashing wave and out into the ocean…The Raptor made one last attempt but was not even close. Rick took a great sigh of relief and lay back in the small boat. He reached for the motor and started it. Surprisingly the motor started immediately and he was on his way out to sea.

Looking back, he could see the Raptors making there way back into the jungle…Rick smiled. Then he realized something…Frantically he searched his pockets until he found the paper work he had come to the island for, they were soaking wet and were all but destroyed.

For some reason Rick didn’t feel upset…he couldn’t explain why…Rick raised the papers and tossed them casually over the side of the boat. They would do him no good in that condition. Stiller felt relieved he was away from the island. Although, his mission ended in failure he was still happy. He had gotten off the island alive and at that moment, he swore he would never return, no matter what the reason.

His mind drifted as he continued to guide the small boat, which was about the size of a raft, out into the ocean further. He thought of Jake…But at that moment something caught his eye directly ahead. It was a boat and Rick was sure it was the one coming for him. He looked at his watch…

“Yep, right on time,” he said.

Within minutes, the boat was nearly right on top of him and they tossed him a line. He was being pulled in when the first attack occurred. Something swept down from the sky and knocked Rick out of his boat and into the water. He did not even have time to yell. Quickly he looked up and saw another attack coming, this time though it came down and grabbed one of the men that was pulling Rick in.

It was a Pteranodon, somehow it had gotten loose during the power failure and now it was searching for food. The man yelled and screamed but in seconds, he was lifted off the deck of the boat and went flying through the air with the winged beast.

Rick swam towards the large boat that had arrived for him as quickly as he could. Another animal swept down, this time it aimed for Rick. Before it could grab him though, Rick ducked under the choppy water. The Pteranodon missed him and soared up into the air once more. Rick took this opportunity, grabbed onto the back of the boat, and flung himself over the edge and onto the deck.

As soon as Rick was aboard the Captain of the boat punched the throttle and with a jerk, they started out further to sea. Rick was helped down to a lower deck by one of the crewmembers. Above the deck, he could hear the men shouting as more attacks commenced but after a few minutes the shouting stopped…they had gotten rid of the Pteranodons.

Rick was shown to a room and that is where he showered. Soon after that, he found his way to a bed and moments later he was fast asleep...

(AC) I tried to make the ending as action packed as I could and I think I succeeded, however every once in a while, when I read through this story, I feel like I rushed the ending. I have tried to change the ending multiple times but it just never seems to work. So in short I think this is the best possible ending that I could have had for this particular story

    FINALE…
    Two Months Later

Jake and Rick sat together at Rick’s house drinking and laughing. It was Jake’s 40th birthday party and more then seven dozen people packed Rick’s house. Right now, though Jake and Rick were sitting alone.

“Jake, I’m sorry I messed up the information. I know how much it would have meant to you if we could have shut down that place,” said Rick as they downed another shot of tequila.

“It’s alright Rick, you know I never asked you to go there…besides I’m just happy you got out of there alive.”

Rick nodded but felt saddened, he really wanted to close that place down. He feared that something tragic was bound to happen again…

“Rick, you know if there had even been the slightest evidence that something was going to happen to Stephanie I would have never even gotten close to that island. Sometimes I blame myself for what happened even though I know there was nothing I could have done to save her…”

Jake looked sad, his head dropped slightly.

Rick could not say anything in return; he just nodded once and then went on sipping his drink. Rick thought differently then Jake about the animals…Jake thought they were monsters whereas Rick just thought of them as animals.
Rick knew that he was lucky to have survived his last voyage to the island and that is why he vowed never to return….

Silently both men drank as people continued to celebrate around the house. There was an uneasy feeling between both of them…despite what had happened, they both feared the worst was yet to come…The sky was dark outside, but that darkness wouldn’t be able to completely overcome the two men that sat silently.

Rick spoke, “Well, this is your party sir and I guess you should make the most of it.”

Jake laughed, “Yep, sorry I just got to thinking again…I do that every once in a while…”

They both laughed and got up. Slowly they made there way across the room to join in the celebration. Both men were hardened with strength after all of the death they had seen and at that moment they became even stronger as they locked out the evil and tyranny that those islands had thrown at them…

Outside the sky was dark but the ever-present stars lighted the ground, along with the ghostly image of a blue moon…It seemed to represent the struggle between light and dark, good and evil, and life and death…Despite the darkness that is inevitable, light always makes itself present, and overcomes all that is evil, even when there is a shadow of doubt…

(AC) This ending…in my opinion, is the best one I have written. I really took a long time thinking about how I was going to end it and I finally settled on this. Everything comes down to…Rick looses the paperwork he came to get and his whole journey was for nothing. He realizes that what he was searching for was only going to cause people more harm. So in the end Jake and Rick have a bittersweet celebration about what happened and I think the last sentence of the story reflects on the entire trilogy very well

Thus ends the STORY and AUTHOR COMMENTARY and we now move on to further Special Features…

    Rejected Storylines:
    1) When I first wrote this story I planned on it being the longest of any other story I had written, with Rick infiltrating InGen, being only the first 3rd of the story. It would then advance to a point where the military moved in and forced them to close down the island. I really had a complicated storyline in mind. However I soon realized that most people thought my stories were to long any way and making one any longer would be pretty stupid.

    2) Then I decided that I wanted to make it the most action packed story so I made up a pretty intense storyline that talked about BOTH Rick and Jake traveling back to Isla Nublar where the brought with them certain mercenaries that were going to help them physically destroy the island. However, shortly into the brainstorming process of this particular version I knew it wasn’t going to work out so I came upon my last story line which is the one you have just read.

In the story line I used I decided to make things a little more light-hearted and yet still action packed. In the end I think it was a good decision because it is an easy, yet fun read for all of the people that checked it out!

    Author Interview…Conducted by RaptorHiss:
(RH) How would you compare ASOD to the first two (DHNR, OIABM)in terms of
    writing style?
Icebreaker: I think that the writing styles are very different in each story, because each time I was going for a different mood. This time around I was looking to make the story more adventurous and entertaining and that is VERY different when compared to the romantic feeling of DHNR

(RH) How would you compare the difficulty with ASOD with the previous
    two?
Icebreaker: This was actually the easiest story to write because it was short and it wasn’t as detailed or complex, in terms of plot line, as the other two stories I had written before this particular one

(RH) Where did you come up with the story line?
I really don’t know…I knew I wanted to make an action packed story and that’s pretty much what I did. I set out to write something that was fun and easy to read and once again I think it is safe for me to say that I succeeded in doing so

(RH) Did you think ASOD would be as successful as the other two?
Icebreaker: Yes and No…I thought it was going to AT LEAST do as good as OIABM, but I was terribly wrong with that prediction because this story was my lowest grossing in terms of comments and STILL is

(RH) Where did you come up with the title, A Shadow Of Doubt?
Icebreaker: I am not sure, however I knew that the title really fitted the mood of the story because Jake and Rick had “shadows of doubt” over what was going on with InGen and the islands. It is a very fitting title if you ask me

(RH) Do you consider ASOD to be better than your other work?
Icebreaker: Better? No…AS GOOD…possibly. I really can’t say because it is up to the “public” to decide what my best work is. Personally my favorite story of mine was “Origin” but I know that there are other people that would REALLY disagree with me on that, so its hard to say

(RH) Did you have a definite storyline for ASOD when you released OIABM?
Icebreaker: I had ideas as to what the storyline was going to be (see the Rejected Storylines section above) but I can’t say that I had a real definite storyline in mind. I knew that it had to close out the trilogy, though and that’s where I started plotting

(RH) What was your main focus when writing this (ie Action, Drama, etc.)
Icebreaker: For this particular story it was pure action…and that is pretty rare for me. As you guys know I am more into the emotional and romantic sorts of writing, so I knew this would be something new for me. It was actually a pretty fun experience

(RH) Did you have fun while writing A Shadow of Doubt? How much?
Icebreaker: Yes, I had a LOT of fun and normally I don’t when I write a story. Normally I am frustrated and had a headache (HeHe) but surprisingly this time around I had a lot of fun

(RH) Do you consider yourself a good author. Do you think other members consider you a good author?
Icebreaker: I can’t really say if I think I am a good author or not because I know there is always room for improvement. As for the members…well I can’t really say for sure on that either. I mean I know SOME of them think I am an excellent author, but authors despise me and my writing. So I can’t give a you a definite answer. Thanks for the Interview!
