    A M A Z O N Ch.1
    By Goldrex

The rain forest was beautiful, birds flew up in the trees hundreds of species in the treetops sing, whistling and chattering. Hundreds of colors all around. It was like a ceiling of color only it was moving, it was beautiful.
It all took place in New York… at a research facility. We were looking for an injured bird high in the canopy. It was a white-throated toucan we named it Fred…High in the tree the bird let out a horrific call. Its wing was broken. I applied a bandage and took it down with me in the harness I was in.
“Hey, what’s up?” asked Carry White, our photographer. Her father used to work for national geographic as a photographer she always used to tag along then started working for us here at Ornithological Research Center or as most people like to call it the O.R.C.
“Nothing much,” I replied, “Fred here does have a broken wing though.”
    “How did he get it?”
“That’s the strange thing, I don’t know probably another bird scared him out of a tree or they got in a fight. Maybe-” I cut myself off. There in the trees I could sort of see a swarm and this buzzing sound was coming from that general direction.
“That’s what it was that broke his wing, that buzzing noise.”
“Let me get this strait, the buzzing noise broke his wing?”
“No, I think its some wasps up there that drove him out of his nest and caught him by surprise in mid-flight then he fell into the lower part of the canopy a few hours ago. He could have been there that long because he would’ve starved too death if it was a day or two”
“I can see you do your homework, but the reason I’m here is to tell you that the big guy wants to see us.”
“Oh man, is it good or bad?”
    “Expedition to the Amazon.”
    “Field trip time…”

Carry and I went up to the boss’s office. I was just about to open the door when it opened and Oliver Myers came out, also know as the boss around here. He was, and still is, a veteran in the field of ornithology. He had recently done research on the great egret, which also lives in our little compound, but he specializes in North American birds.
“Listen,” Myers said “I just got a letter from the board. In a nutshell it says there giving us too much money for too little information. So we need to send you, our top ornithologist to the Amazon to document an alleged new species of bird some local saw in the past three weeks.”
    “Who’s my team?”
“Well obviously Carry, for the moment she’s the best photographer we have.”
“For the moment? I am no second rate photographer!”
“ Fine you’re our top photographer, the best we have, all hail Carry for her photo taking abilities.”
“Do I have to pay extra for the sarcasm?”
“No that’s a bonus, anyway back to your jobs the other members of your team will be Enrique Garcia, the translator he speaks both Spanish and Portuguese, Brian Carr, he’s fresh out of collage but a bit too eager to do everything there is to do, and that’s got him into trouble more than once… you better keep an eye on him. Gary Cornell an ornithologist working in Costa Rica for the moment. And as usual Cooper will be your pilot and every now and then bring airdrops, okay. Now you leave in a few weeks lets get your vaccinations. Here’s the list.”
Myers handed me a list, all the usual vaccinations were on there. Typhoid, yellow fever, and rabies too name a few of them. The Amazon is a breeding ground for those diseases so we had to be prepared as humanly possible. We were not going to let anything go to chance…
