    Jurassic Park V: Evolution (Part7)
    By Crisco

    Part 7:

The black ocean twisted and churned as the helicopter approached the island. The small safety light in the helicopter remained on but was ignored by the people in the copter, who were sleeping. Carmen and Mark had stayed awake, Jesse was with the pilot holding a conversation.

"Remember that time in Miami, when we found that guy?" Carmen asked, pulling a strand of hair off her face."

    "Sadij?" Mark replied.

"Yea him, He was in a tug-boat all alone with barely anything. I thought for sure he had given up."

    "Yes, I remember."

"When he pulled out that knife and held it to my throat I thought it was all over. You took him out just in time."

"It had to be done." Mark answered firmly.

"I had never came so close to my death in all my life." Carmen said, laying back trying to sleep like the others.

Mark turned to the window and finally saw the island, almost as if on cue Jesse turned around.

"Everyone up. We're here, Isla Sorna. Get your packs and be ready to go."

Mark and Carmen nudged the people around them and everyone started to rise. Rachel had been sleeping on Gary and her hair was all over the place, looking embarrassed she pulled a out a hair tie and made a pony-tail. Dan had drooled on his collar and took out a hanker-chief and wiped himself.

Ben looked out the window at the foreboding island. The palms of the trees glinted in the moonlight and the brush swayed from the high winds. Huge black waves crashed along the rocky shore with gave way to high, green peaks that rose from the island. The helicopter made it's way in-between two peaks and found shelter from the wind behind one of them.

Jesse climbed over a pack into the main area of the copter.

"O.K. guys, we're here, the pilot wants us to rappel down. There's some fallen brush on the landing so we're just going to use rope. Everyone, I want the packs on the backs."

Gary sat with his large filming camera, he had forgotten to request it to be delivered with the cars, and he had been carrying it.

Dan walked over to him, "You think you can handle it."

"Yea, sure, of course." Gary said, securing the strap around his chest and back.

Rachel was tying her boots and tightening her pack to her back.

The others were all ready and Jesse flung the copter door open. A great gust of wind flew into the cabin and everyone noticed.

"Now we're only rappelling about 27 ft. in the open air, so it's not like a mountainside. Remember to center your weight and keep a tight grip." Jesse had been talking to everyone but kept his eyes locked on Rachel so she would especially get the point.

Ben was the first to go, then Carmen and Mark. Dan was next and he chose to jump the last ten feet just for sport, but ended up tumbling to the ground upon impact.

"This is not fun and games, lets take this seriously, these winds are no joke." During Philip's words no one had started going down the rope and it started flapping around like a rag doll.

Ricky made way for Rachel indicating she was next to go. She accepted his outward hand in helping her to the railing and then she started down the rope on her own with ease. Mark helped her on her feet and gave a thumbs up to Ricky. He started down the rope and after gaining 10 ft Gary started as well. Everyone watched as the man carried the heavy camera tied to his chest. He stopped in fear of falling off. The harsh wind whipped across his face and the camera shifting his weight. Gary lost his grip and started to fall.

"Oh my God." Rachel said, mouth gaping.

Gary and his camera plummeted to the earth. Ricky who was under him got knocked too, but managed to keep a hold of the rope and slid a mere 4 feet down the rope. The others rushed to Gary who was hunched over in the grass. Carmen, gently moved his arm revealing his leg. It was in an odd position. She took his khakis and slid them up his leg with some trouble because of the hot blood. A shiny white piece of bone stuck out of the skin and Gary looked pained.

Jesse had rappelled down after Gary and moved Rachel out of the way to have a look for himself.

Carmen looked at him questionably and he nodded.

"Find the pad, let's clear it, they're going home." Jesse said.

Rachel was wiping the tears from her eyes as Ben and Carmen lifted Gary, who was gritting his teeth.

"Gary it's gonna' be fine, they're taking you home."

Ricky and Dan had found the cement helicopter pad and together cleared the brush and debris that had accumulated. Once they had the mossy cement clearing the copter landed. Mark, who had stayed in the copter helped Gary into his seat and strapped him in. After securing Gary, Mark exited and held his hand out to Rachel. She stood still, looking at his hand quizzically. She turned to Carmen who seemed impatient, waiting for her to enter the copter.

"I'm not going." Rachel said, finger pointing to her chest, and wind sweeping her hair into her face. "Do I look like I'm injured?" Rachel said patting her arms and legs.

Jesse looked at her obviously frustrated. "Your cameraman is out of it and what are you gonna' have to show?"

"Listen, just being here is enough of story for me to sit on for my lifetime, and I've got my own cameras."

Mark looked at Jesse and shrugged his shoulders. Jesse then pulled Rachel back and closed the copter door. He gave a thumbs up to the pilot who started to lift into the air.

Once the copter had flown behind the hill and out of sight Jesse pulled ahead of the group and led them through the jungle.

Rachel observed the jungle by moonlight. The trees, high above their heads swayed with the wind and the fronds crumpled beneath their feet. It was eerily silent except for the howling wind which sounded distant because of the shielding vegetation. It was slightly chilly and Rachel rubbed her arms. The jungle drastically ended and gave way to a grassy clearing. The grass was 4 ft. tall and in some places lay flat. In the center of the clearing there was a tall observation tower. A long rusty ladder led up to it. Ben and Dan got out their gloves and the others followed suit. Ricky began to fumble with the ladder, which started 6 ft. in the air, then with a loud creak it fell, allowing everyone to start up it. The room was small, with windows surrounding it and a deck with railing. The cabinets were empty, there was a pair of binoculars on a table and a smashed phone. There was a logo on the wall labeled: InGen. Carmen rolled out her sleeping bag in a corner. She approached Rachel.

"Do you need help?" Carmen asked motioning to Rachel's pack.

Rachel waited a moment, "Actually yes, I really don't know what's in this pack."

Carmen took Rachel's pack and up-zipped it. There was the normal stuff, matches, a liter, water, and "sealed meals". Then there were binoculars, flares, walkie-talkies, then there was a pistol."

Carmen picked the pistol up with her index finger, "Ever shot a gun before?"

Rachel didn't want to admit it but she hadn't.

"It's fine, the movies and television do a pretty good job teaching, any idiot can fire a gun. Just don't do it like the fake-me-out thugs who hold it sideways."

"Gotcha," Rachel said. "This is the sleeping bag, and what's this?" she asked.

"Whoa, don't touch that. It's a nerve gas. It'll freak out any type of animal for about 10 minutes, then they'll "wake" up very slowly." Carmen answered.

Rachel nodded. She was always ready to learn something new, and Carmen was about the only person she would accept knowledge from.

"That should do it, I think Jesse wants to broadcast."

"Isn't that equipment too heavy, why wasn't that left in the cars?" Rachel asked.

"Oh no, they've got a great system now, It's a foldable satellite and you plug it into the laptop."

    "Thanks" Rachel said.

"No problem" Carmen answered unlacing her boots.

Rachel got up and walked outside on the deck. The wind had died down and now all sorts of insects could be heard. The moon was directly above them so everything around them was illuminated. Mark was sitting down on the deck, with the satellite on the railing and the laptop in front of him. He was starting the laptop up when he saw Rachel.

    "How are you?" Mark asked.

"I'm fine. Gary will be fine."

"How are you gonna' do without him?"

    "Just fine."

"You seem pretty self-sufficient." Mark said, finally looking up at her. Her light blonde hair was shiny and her figure was contrasted against the stars.

"I hope so" Rachel said walking around, kneeling behind him. "So when are we communicating?"

"In about 20 min. as a matter of fact, I should go get Jesse." He pulled his leg from under the wires, preparing to get up.

"No, I'll get him." Rachel said.

Jesse was not inside the cabin so she began to walk around the fence. She turned a corner and saw Ricky pressed up against the fence, peeing. Rachel turned away, "Sorry" she said quickly walking from where she came.

"It's o.k, why aren't you asleep?" Ricky said zipping his pants and walking after her.

"I'm trying to find Jesse." Rachel said, avoiding eye contact with Ricky.

"Oh, he's down in the grass." Ricky said walking around the corner of the room and bending over the railing. Jesse Philips was down there, in the grass, with a cigarette. Every few seconds he would look around him for security. Once he was satisfied he would puff on his cigarette.

    "Jesse" Ricky said.

Philips didn't seem to hear him and kept on smoking.

    "Jesse." Ricky said again.

This time he caught his attention and Philips turned around and made for the ladder. In a few seconds he had climbed the ladder and was already on the deck with them.

    "Where's Mark?" Jesse said.

"He's over here" Rachel said starting to walk in the right direction.

Philips followed her to Mark who was getting online.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

Malcolm walked in Ingall's office with a clean shave and a half-eaten taco in his hand. He saluted Ingalls as he made his way for the leather chair.

    "Good evening Dr. Malcolm."

"Same to you. Are they there yet?" Malcolm asked.

"Yes, they are in the north-east quadrant of the island in an observation tower. We're broadcasting with them shortly."

"So how uh, high up is this observation tower?" Malcolm crossed his legs and threw his taco wrappings in the metal trash bin.

"High enough, I don't know the specific height, but it was built buy the company, surely they made the right appropriations."

"I wouldn't assume that." Ian said.

Geniece walked in the room in a blouse and skirt, with her ID tags hanging from her neck, followed by Kate Banks, in her same clothes, hair a mess.

"I hope everyone's ready because this room will become our second home over the next day." Ingalls said, taking off his jacket and unrolling his sleeves.

A tall skinny white man with a laptop walked into the office. "I think it's time Mr. Ingalls."

"Alright. Everyone this is Trevor Wells, he's our tech guy from downstairs."

Malcolm gave a wave and Geniece walked over to him and patted him on the back. Kate walked to the coffee machine and picked out her grounds.

"Where's your hook-up?" Trevor asked, holding a bundle of wires. Geniece tailed behind him, carrying the laptop. Bruce pulled a table off the wall and Trevor quickly started hooking the wires to the laptop. Malcolm got up and walked over to the desk. Bruce and Geniece were leaning over Trevor who sat in the chair, typing on the laptop. He got up and pulled a walkie-talkie from his belt.

"We're all ready down here, Brice." Trevor said loudly into the walkie talkie. He then clipped it back to his belt.

"Which one of you is gonna' be on-screen?"

"I will and then Dr. Malcolm when necessary." Bruce answered.

"Have a seat then." Trevor said, turning the laptop towards him and opening the program.

Geniece plugged in the camera and faced it towards Bruce's chair.

    "Thanks" Bruce said.

"We're getting a connection." Trevor said aloud.

It was black on the screen for a few moments, then there was static. Everyone in the room waited anxiously, staring at the screen, except for Kate who was stirring her coffee in the background. Suddenly the picture showed up. A handsome man with short black hair was staring at them. Trevor moved his hand behind the laptop and then everyone heard the sounds of the jungle. The man got up from his crouched position and another man sat in his place.

"Hello Jesse." Bruce said aloud, toward his speaker.

Jesse Philips sat at the computer and stared, he hadn't heard the message. Mark walked in front of the screen again and started typing.

    "Hello."

Jesse turned around. The blonde reporter handed him a headset.

"Are we clear?" Bruce said into the speaker.

    "Yes, Bruce."

    "How are things."

"We've had one accident already. The cameraman broke his leg on landing, he's on the copter going back to you."

Malcolm rolled his eyes. "And now it begins."

Geniece and Trevor looked at him, but Ingalls ignored him.

Jesse continued, "We're going to get the Hummers first thing tomorrow."

Bruce turned to Geniece, "I need you to find where that cameraman is staying and have him transferred." Geniece nodded and walked away. "Trevor, you are free to leave." He did the same and left the office.

"Anything else we should be aware of?" Bruce asked.

    "No Sir." Jesse answered.

Malcolm turned the laptop (rather than just the camera) , "You all need to be careful, stick together and if you feel any, uh tremors or hear anything, climb up the nearest, tallest tree."

Bruce looked at Malcolm, "Please, these are trained professionals."

Malcolm wasn't phased. "The raptors are your biggest threat, if you just see one of them, you're in trouble."

"That'll be all Dr. Malcolm." Bruce said. He turned the laptop back to him, "The next contact is tomorrow at 3:00 P.M. we'll be here no-matter-what so broadcast before that if necessary."

"Will do, Goodnight." Jesse said. Mark appeared back on the screen and his hand reached out of view, soon after the screen went black.
