    Chapter 2: The Evil Awakens

Once the last ray of light faded for the night, everyone made their way inside and Jeff lit the fireplace. They sat around the fireplace, laughing and giggling over the various funny and gross stories from school and other aspects of each other’s lives. They were munching on nuts and chips, which were pretty much all that was in the cabin. Jeff made a mental note that next time he talked to his parents, whenever that was, to remind them to get some groceries for the cabin.

As Jeff, with the help of Hillary, went to the kitchen to put on some coffee for everyone, the others moved off the topic of funny life stories and onto ghost stories. Jeff only half-listened to Ethan as he told a story that reminded Jeff very much of a mixture of Candyman and Leprechaun, while the other half of his attention was on Hillary, who was bringing Jeff up to speed on her drama-filled high school life.

“…and then after I told her how much of a slut she was for sleeping with Adam behind my back, she used our old relationship against me! She said that I was a bigger slut then her because at least she keeps it her own age.”

“Just ignore her,” Jeff said as he loaded some coffee grinds into the filter. “She’s only mad that you caught her and Adam and she wants to put you on the defensive instead of the offensive and will do that by any means.” Jeff poured some water in, closed the lid, and turned the machine on. “Plus she’s just jealous that you got a piece of this and she didn’t.” Jeff turned to face her and flexed, but came across more as a drowned cat then somebody threatening.

Hillary broke out laughing and tried to stop several times, failing all but one of those times. Jeff couldn’t help but break a smile out as well. “Thanks Jeff,” Hillary’s laughter died down to slight giggles. Jeff seemed to always be able to cheer her up in any situation.

“Come here, Hill.” Hillary stepped towards Jeff and he softly hugged her. Hillary couldn’t explain it, but whenever Jeff hugged her, it seemed all problems went away and she was at peace. They parted and walked back out into the living room, just in time to hear the demise of the Mirror Leprechaun by way of shattering mirror.

“Coffee will be ready in about fifteen minutes,” Jeff informed them as he and Hillary sat back on the floor. While they had been in the kitchen, Yvonne had moved from her own spot, into Ethan’s arms so he could comfort her during the scary story.

“Hey guys, check this out,” Brandon said from his spot on the couch. He had been the only person to take up residence on one of the couches, but since that was where he planned on sleeping, he had simply climbed into his sleeping bag during the story. The others turned to look and he had a book in his hands, flipping through it. “This was on the table there,” he motioned to the coffee table, which still had one other oddly-shaped book faced down on it. “It’s some kind of diary.”

“Dude,” Jeff moaned. “That’s my mom’s. Put it down.”

“Read it!” Yvonne shouted from her spot.

“Yeah man, read some of it out!” Ethan joined in with a smile. Seconds later, everyone but Jeff was chanting for Brandon to read the diary. When Brandon raised a hand, they finally toned down.

“October 13th, 2006,” Brandon read out loud after turning to one of the last couple pages. “Martin and I have been out back digging a lot lately so we can put in a guest house with full plumbing. Early today while we were digging, we came across an odd find in the ground. It was some kind of grotesque book bound in a leathery substance, with the cover forming a very frightening deformed face. It is quite simply the most ghastly thing I’ve ever had the displeasure of laying my eyes on. When I opened it and turned the stiff pages, I discovered that among the nightmare-inducing images that would disturb even the most sickest of minds, there was text written in some foreign language. Not really quite sure what language it is myself, but I must make a point of asking Martin’s brother Dan. He went to University for ancient languages and may be able to pinpoint its origin. For now I’ll keep it out of sight in the wood box.”

During the reading, everyone eyed the mysterious book that was face down on the coffee table, but no one made a move towards it. Brandon continued. “October 15th, 2006. Dan and Amanda were over today for some coffee. While they were here, we had Dan take a look at that book we found the other day. At first he thought it was a prank until he looked at the writing. It turns out it’s written in Ancient Sumerian which is a long-lost language, however Dan was able to translate bits and pieces of it due to it being similar to many other languages that he had learned. One passage was really quite eerie to hear, as it seemed there was no English version of the words in it. I’ll copy those words here, written the way they sound, so that when I return to the house I can try to see if I can find someone on the Internet that may be able to translate them.

“Tatra Ormistroben azarta tantermono monzezezonzomozezobar zo.”

    ***

Deep in the forest, an unnatural force so evil that even the most cold-hearted demented people on the planet would be greatly affected by it, shot out of the wet moss covering a large portion of the ground. To the naked eye, this Evil Force would look like nothing more then a small clump of thick fog moving rapidly through the air, but on another plain of existence, this Being was truly the most monstrous being of them all. A true force to be reckoned with.

It zoomed over the landscape, maneuvering over large rocks and around thick trees, just plowing through the smaller ones and splitting them in half as it raced towards the lone cabin lit up by the bright full moon above.

“Keep going,” Ethan urged Brandon as Yvonne deeply dug her nails into his legs in fear. “It’ll be ok,” he whispered after to his girlfriend. “Just some ancient shit. None of it actually does anything.”

“October 18th, 2006,” Brandon went on, however this time his voice was much more serious and he wasn’t sure if it showed or not, but it took every ounce of courage to continue reading the diary. “It’s been two nights since I last wrote and since we had Dan translate parts of the book. Oh god, that damned book. When Dan read that one passage, it awoke something in the woods. Something evil. A mist of some kind that came after us last night; thank God it only seems to come out at night. Last night Martin became something different. A host to something. A creature from the pits of Hell itself. Dan and Amanda were spending the night and they were killed when the demon that took over Martin’s body attacked. Oh god, I can’t get that picture of Dan being decapitated and Amanda…God, I can’t even bring myself to write it. There was so much blood…I hid in the shed out back until the sun came up this morning. I don’t know where Martin went, but he was gone when I left the shed. It seems the sunlight scared him off. It’s now 10:00 AM and I plan on leaving today. I’m leaving a note on the fridge incase anyone stops in for a visit before I can get a hold of the police. With any luck that note will make them turn around and head back home.”

Brandon flipped the page and then closed the diary. “That’s all there is. That’s the last entry.” The room was quiet for several long moments while everyone digested what Brandon had just read. Yvonne was visibly shaking in fear and Ethan had to hold her tightly and affectionately kiss her on the check to calm her down even the slightest bit.

Hillary had moved her hand to grasp Jeff’s tightly. “I’m sure everything’s fine,” she assured him in the calmest voice she could muster. “Maybe it’s some kind of prank.”

“You don’t know my parents,” Jeff said to her as panic began to overtake him. “They aren’t the joking kind. They don’t even like sarcastic humor. And my mom…She’s overly Christian. There’s no way she’d blindly believe any of that unless she actually witnessed it.”

Rasmus reached up onto the coffee table and reached for the other book laying there. He went to lift it up, but immediately dropped it before even turning it over. “What is it?” Brandon asked.

Rasmus touched it again and this time lifted it, turning it over and looking at the deformed face of a cover. “It’s that book.” He opened the cover. “Necronomicon Ex Mortis.”

    “What?” Jeff asked.

“That’s what it says here. It’s all it says on the front page.” Rasmus brushed some of his long hair out of his eyes as he slowly flipped through the pages. Parts had nothing but small text going on for pages and pages. Other parts had images included with the text. These images were hand-drawn and were of various demons and creatures of all shapes and sizes, but not one single one was anything to joke about. Rasmus had never seen anything so demented in his absolute worst nightmares. Some of the pictures included diagrams and skeletal charts.

“I think that ink is dried blood,” Michael stated as he looked over Rasmus’ shoulder at the pages of the book. “I’d swear it is.”

“Alright, I think we should all go to bed,” Hillary spoke up. “We’ve had enough excitement for one night, plus its getting late.”

    “My parents…” Jeff trailed off.

“We can’t do much tonight,” Hillary said to him. “But tomorrow we should definitely go into town and ask around. See if anyone’s seen them in the last couple days.”

Jeff nodded his head and stood up, moving towards his room without saying anything. Ethan stood with the frightened Yvonne still in his arms. He said goodnight to everyone and led her out to their tent, closing the door behind them.

“No point in putting any more word in the fire,” Michael said to Brandon as he also stood up. “Just let the fire go out now. It’s pretty hot in here anyway.”

“Sure thing,” Brandon said as he laid his body down on the couch and Michael went to his room.

“Hey buddy,” Hillary said to Rasmus. He looked up from the book and at her. “Give the book a rest.” Hillary noticed how shaken up the evening had made Jeff and in all honesty she didn’t blame him. The least she could do to help out was speak on his behalf.

“Yeah,” Rasmus agreed. “That kind of reading can wait until it’s light out.” He closed the book and laid it back on the table. After he went to the bathroom, Hillary said her goodnights to Brandon and then made her way to Jeff’s room, closing the door behind her and plunging the room into complete darkness.

“Jeff, you alright?” she asked as she climbed into the bottom bunk. Jeff didn’t reply, but she knew he had heard her. She wouldn’t be surprised if Jeff was up for the entire night, repeatedly running the diary pages through his head.

Hillary sighed to herself, silently wishing she could do more to help Jeff. Giving in to hopeless defeat, she closed her eyes and rolled over, pulling the warn wool blanket up to her chin.

The Evil Force slowly scanned the area around the outside of the cabin until the bathroom light turned on. The Evil Force instantly turned to look at it and then made its way towards it, picking up space as it neared.

Rasmus flushed the toilet and turned on the sink to wash his hands in the cold trickling water. He let some of the water pool in his hands so he could splash it over his face. He couldn’t get that strange book – the Necronomicon Ex Mortis – out of his thoughts. It was by far the most disturbing thing he had ever seen, and it intrigued him because of that fact, more then anything had ever intrigued him before. If Brandon wasn’t sleeping out there, Rasmus would no doubt go back out to look through it some more. Actually, he was pretty sure that if he could just get…

His thoughts were instantly cut off by the window exploding inwards. He snapped his head over towards it and screamed at what rushed in towards him.

    ***

Everyone in the cabin heard the crashing noise followed by Rasmus’ scream and jumped out of their beds, meeting outside the closed bathroom door. Michael turned the handle and slammed the door open.

The bathroom was a complete mess. Shattered glass laid all over the room and ripped pieces of the curtains were littering the floor. A light cool breeze gently blew in from the shattered window over everyone in the hall, but Rasmus was no where to be seen.

“What the fuck happened?” Brandon shouted as his eyes scanned the room. “Where the fuck is Rasmus?”

Michael climbed up onto the toilet seat and looked out the window. His eyes searched the dark and foreboding landscape, but saw no movement beyond the trees lightly blowing in the breeze, and saw no signs whatsoever of Rasmus. A shadow moved across the side of the small wooden shed, but upon further investigation, Michael discovered that it was a branch blowing around.

He climbed back down, carefully stepping over the broken glass, and went back out into the hall. “There’s no sign of him out there,” he informed the others.

Jeff turned the lock from the inside of the door and closed it. He turned the handle, but found it locked. Pleased with that, he turned to the others. “We need to get Ethan and his girlfriend in here, now. Who’s going out there with me?”

Nobody said anything or made any indication that they were willing to volunteer. “You big bad college boys are nothing but a bunch of pussies,” Hillary stated to Brandon and Michael before turning back to Jeff. “I’ll go with you.”

Jeff and Hillary made their way to the front door with Brandon and Michael right on their heels. Jeff opened the door but paused when he started out into the night. He watched for any movement along the edges of the forest, eyes scanning and checking out every single shadow.

“Let’s move,” he said. He and Hillary rushed outside and ran out around the side of the cabin, towards the tent. Michael and Brandon put their faces up against the kitchen window, watching from the safety of the cabin.

The couple reached the tent and when Jeff unzipped the opening, Hillary turned around and kept watch, head darting around to look off in every direction. Jeff’s sudden appearance in their tent caused Yvonne to scream bloody murder when she opened her eyes and saw him there, but Jeff calmed her down by repeatedly telling her that it was him.

“What the fuck are you doing?” she asked him, her voice cracking. Between the screaming and the yelling from Yvonne, Ethan rubbed his eyes.
“What’s going on?” he asked sleepily.

“Something just attacked the cabin,” Jeff told them. “Rasmus was taken.”

“What?” Ethan sat up instantly, suddenly wide awake. “Are you joking?” Jeff gave him a dead set look and Ethan knew that his friend from college was not lying in any way. He began to climb out form his sleeping bag. “Alright Yvonne, come on. We’re heading inside.”

Jeff waited outside the tent with Hillary while Ethan and Yvonne rapidly picked their stuff up and re-packed it all into their bags. Once they had everything gathered, the group of them quickly made their way back inside the cabin. It wasn’t until they were all inside with the door closed and locked again, that Jeff finally allowed himself to breath.

“Everyone, keep the windows shut,” Jeff ordered. “If anything, anything happens, wake everyone else up.” They all acknowledged and went back to bed, with Ethan and Yvonne taking Rasmus’ old room.

    ***

Yvonne’s eyes opened later that night and she discovered that it was still pitch dark outside. He glanced at the alarm clock on the dresser next to the bed and saw that it was 2:45. She yawned as she stood and slowly as to not wake her boyfriend, climbed out of bed.

Her hand went to her stomach as it growled and she quietly tip-toed out of the room and down the dark hall, through the living room and past the sleeping Brandon. She reached the kitchen and made a move to open the fridge, when she heard a noise behind her. She whipped around, but saw nothing out of the ordinary in the room.

She closed her eyes as she let out a large yawn and opened them again. This time she definitely noticed that something wasn’t right. The window blinds which had been opened a second ago were suddenly closed now. She took a step back and bumped into the fridge. She quickly glanced back to confirm that nothing else was behind her, and when she looked ahead again, the blinds were suddenly once again opened.

Just as Yvonne was about to make a run for her room, she saw something run by the window outside. Something in the shape of a human. Something that she was positive was that missing friend of her boyfriend’s.

She quickly but quietly made her way outside and stepped onto the patio, low fog beginning to cling low to the ground all around. “Rasmus?” she called out into the darkness. Nothing answered. Whatever she had seen move past the window seconds before seemed to be long gone.

Or just hiding around the corner of the cabin.

Yvonne’s body stiffened when that thought came to her. Maybe it was what attacked Curtis and, as her mind suggested, was merely waiting around the corner for her to peak around. Her body was only inches from the corner, but she wasn’t able to bring herself to take even the smallest peak. “Fuck this.”

She turned and very quickly made her way back inside, closing the door behind herself. Her body calmed down slightly now that she was back in the safe confines of the cabin, but she knew she wouldn’t feel completely safe until she was back in bed with Ethan, and so she wasted no time in returning to her room.
