    CHAPTER 3: The Detective

    Snow flakes lightly touched the foggy glass of the Ford Truck owned by Detective Robby Homer. Ice was forming on the roads, visibility going down the drain. It wasn’t the first time Robby had ever been in situations like this. In fact, it happened last year.
    Right now his thoughts weren’t on the weather, they were on the suspect which was talking with a mysterious person up ahead on a very dim street. It was evening and the two men had been talking for at least thirty to forty minutes. Detective Homer was thirty-five-years old, light brown hair, and a little pudgy in the stomach area. Maybe if he hadn’t of been sitting on his ass all day waiting for a case, he wouldn’t be the man that said he wasn’t in shape. He simply didn’t want to be though.
    Robby was an honest man. He treated his “customers” with good respect. For the most part he was free lance. He had gotten his license four years ago and he felt really good about it. Now, it seems as if he had been doing it all his life. He was hoping for really good adventures in doing it. He had always loved watching the Private Eye movies, and thoroughly studied them for ways that were not done trying to get his license.

    “Whoah, movement.” He whispered watching the suspect slip a piece of paper to the man. “Ha, tell me what the hell you’re doing.”

    The suspect slowly retreats back at his vehicle.

    For some time now, Detective Homer had been on a case involving a friend of the suspect’s wife having very suspicious thoughts of her husband…thoughts that maybe he was hiring to kill his own wife.

    “Proof but could be anything.” He said out of his own breath.

    The suspect left seconds later leaving a cloud of snow behind. Robby yawned, turned over to his right to grasp the tape recorder. He lightly taped it.

    ”Thirty minutes I believe has passed. Suspect Colin Totty talks with a mysterious gentleman in a brown coat; passes a note; leaves off in a small brown coup. Not much to say about but the note, the meeting, and the speed at which he took back off suggests something big is happening and I have to find out more,” said Detective Homer stopping the recording a second later.

    Robby attempted to turn the ignition on in his truck and sneak away from the area when he sees that the suspect came back on the street with his coup. He stepped out and opened the door for a woman. The woman was none other than his very own wife, Katy. Robby recognized her from the picture her friend gave him. Something was over her eyes. Robby squinted, then, took out his binoculars to get a better look…Yes, it was a blindfold; she seemed to be happy about something, he could tell by the huge grin on her face.

    Something’s not right, thought Detective Homer.

    Slowly, but without hesitation, he pulls out the gun from his coat and loads it, still watching the two move into the street light.

    “It’s a surprise, it’s not supposed to be shown right away.” Repeated Colin as he positioned her wife.

    “I need a guess, honey. A new car…maybe that diamond ring you said was too expensive.” Katy said.

    “Hmm… Maybe…just maybe that could be it, but I’m not saying. My lips are sealed.”

    An awkward silence came over the two, maybe it was conceived quickly to Katy whether it was bad or good, but as soon as she heard the sound of the gun shot, she fell to the ground. Was she hit? Was it really a gun that she heard? Quickly and frantically, she pulled the blind fold off her eyes and looked up.
    Blood stained snow reflected off her cornea. She traced where the blood came from. It wasn’t from her, it came from the bushes straight ahead. Suddenly, a body fell to the ground. It was the mysterious man that Detective Homer had seen. It was the hired killer. From the side, she saw Colin fall to his knees as if he gave up everything for a single shot and it backfired.
    Colin looked in back of him. A gun was pointing at his own head, coming from the hand of Detective Homer.

    “Stay on the ground, fucking stay on the ground.” He yelled at Colin.

    The husband did what he was told and didn’t move a muscle but his own face. Tears and sobbing succumbed him.

    Katy looked to Colin, “What the fuck is this?”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    “You are just lucky your true friend asked me to do this.” Robby said.
    He handed some coffee to Katy. They were at a police office and Katy was overwhelmed with the events that have taken place.
    ”Why would he do this? He loved me…I loved him.”
    “Perhaps, there was an affair with someone else.”
    “I don’t want to talk about it anymore.”
    If it was anything people noticed about Detective Robby Homer, it was that he was the most respecting man. He understood what people were going through. Maybe having a rough life in bad neighborhoods helped more with his knowledge.
    He turned around after the response and went out the door. This was his last case until something new came in and at the time it seemed that was never going to happen.
