STUDENT CONFINEMENT
WRITTEN BY CHASE KUERTZ
1 INT. SCHOOL BASEMENT - DARK 1
Steel and metal GADGETS click together indicating a machine of great importance. The metal is new, this we can see. Some are round with niches on the sides to fit with the other round metal objects. Steam rushes up from the machine and creates wetness on the metals. From the far side, we hear a lot of commotion. People chat about this new MARVELOUS MACHINE that can make a difference in today’s life.
CUT TO:
2 EXT. SCHOOL WALLS – NIGHT 2
From the basement to outside, we watch as a steel wall is sliding across the brick school wall and over windows and glass doors. We can hear an ever ending CLICKING coming from somewhere off screen. Finally, the wall stops sliding and we are left with a confusion as to what it is. We won’t know till later on.
FADE TO:
3 INT. CLASSROOM 101 – DAY 3
TOM SWIZER, a 17-year-old Junior with dark brown hair and a square jaw, drools all over his table. His eyes are close completely, as if we weren’t aware by now. The teacher keeps talking, paying no attention to the young one in his desk asleep, until he hears the small snore coming from his nostrils.
MRS. HOWARD, the teacher, stops here talking of the literature assignment and decides to take a stroll over to the resting TOM. She taps on his shoulder. He wakes up with a jolt and notices her. He’s caught dead in his tracks. He thinks and moves his eyes around.
MRS. HOWARD I’m guessing your thinking in your undeveloped mind that I should be lenient on you since it’s just the first day of your Junior year of school. If that’s the case then you’re dead wrong. (HANDS TOM A SHEET OF PAPER) So, you wouldn’t mind signing the detention slip, would you?
TOM takes the slip in between his index and middle finger as MRS. HOWARD walks back up to teach. TOM shrugs and listens. The bell RINGS.
CUT TO:
4 EXT. SCHOOL YARD – DAY 4
TOM SWIZER meets up with his buddies outside the school at parking lot; JAKE MCGUIN, a black haired good natured teen who his choking down his cigarette; NANCY HEROLD, light brown hair with blue eyes and a very happy smile who is also TOM’S girlfriend; and last one is FREDDY LENZENY, an ITALIAN AMERICAN.
Their meeting is not coincidence, they always meet together after school, we can see this. TOM runs, drops his bag, and embraces NANCY. He then KISSES her passionately.
NANCY (Smirks) Hard day at school?
TOM (Assuring) You betcha!
JAKE flicks his cigarette to the ground and pinches NANCY on the rear.
JAKE Something going on down there?
NANCY pushes away with TOM still holding her.
NANCY I’ve told you to never do that again.
JAKE (SHRUGS) Hey, I’m a sinner!
JAKE resists to do it again. FREDDY sits on the concrete floor, pulls out his binder and checks his schedule.
The rest of the group notices his UNUSUAL behavior.
JAKE (cont’d) Hey, Fred, what the hell are you doing? Looking for sometime to read a book? FREDDY No, I’m looking for a time to fit a date with your mother in.
JAKE (SARCASTICALLY)
Oh, very harsh.
TOM sees a weird looking wall, it’s gray and made out of metal. Hinges make it slide from the wall to windows and doors.
TOM Anybody remember that here last year?
JAKE lights up another cigarette.
JAKE I’ve heard things about it.
NANCY Like what?
JAKE walks closer to us, making us feel unusually fearful on what he’s about to say.
JAKE It’s called the FOLDING WALL, it’s for emergency securities. Some company makes it… Glaco or… something. It slides over the windows and doors for…you know… protection.
NANCY Against what?
JAKE Like…tornadoes…criminals. During the summer people were breaking in. I’ll tell you what else I heard. I heard it killed a guy. Slid over his body and cut him like butter.
TOM That’s a bunch of bullshit. JAKE looks at him.
JAKE I don’t know, Tom, Ned is really truthful when he speaks.
TOM Ned Donnelson?
JAKE Yeah, Donnelson. You know him.
TOM He probably got it from someone who was lying. JAKE threw the cigarette to the ground.
JAKE Maybe. But I’m sure he’s right about what it does.
JAKE opened his jeep’s door, dove into the driver’s seat and waved to them.
JAKE (cont’d) See ya, my bitches! Ha
…And he drove off to the street.
NANCY When’s he going to grow up?
FREDDY Probably never.
(He grabs his note book and throws it in the back of his truck.)
Are we still up for tonight? Bowling?
TOM I don’t know. You up for it Nancy?
NANCY Anything for you, hon!
(She jumps in his arms)
TOM She’s so easy to talk to.
(He smiles)
TOM and Nancy wave goodbye and get into their vehicles. FREDDY is left, checking his BOOK BAG to see if any of his books were left behind. Sure enough, he finds that he’s missing his ENGLISH book.
FREDDY Oh, shit. English.
We watch him take his BOOK BAG and walk back into the school.
5 INT. LOCKER HALL – DAY 5
He walks to his locker, number 152, and opens it to reveal his lost ENGLISH book. He takes the book in his arms, closes the locker, and puts it in his BOOK BAG.
He turns around to see a MYSTERIOUS MAN looking at him from the left end of the hall. The man stares at him blankly. FREDDY stares at the man wondering what it wants. He couldn’t see his face, it was under some kind of hood or something. And the man was wearing a dark coat. The man later walks off down the stairs.
FREDDY sighs with relief and shrugs it off. He walks back down the hall.
