    PART 8

    CHAPTER 19: SOMETHING TO FEAR

    “The security doors are in place?” Greg asked.

    “Yeah, we’ve got them locked, I don’t think anything could have gotten in without us noticing.” Colburn said. He checked out of the control room door, then closed it.

    Colburn laid his gun next to the nearest desk and walked around the room.

    “How long we have, by the way?” Colburn asked.

    “Shit, maybe…” Knox checked his watch, “two in a half hours left. That isn’t enough time to get a chopper over here is it?”

    “Maybe…if they are near that is.” Said Kristen.

    Drinnan sat his head on the desk. “The chopper…didn’t the soldier say he would bring one…”

    “No, Knox said that he said maybe. I don’t want to wait to find out that we have no way out. Fuck that! We’ll have to get one ourselves. The safe house is no use to us when they start to bomb, plus we have to worry about that raptors.” Said Colburn lifting up his hand and pointing outside.

    Kristen looked at him curiously.

    “Raptors? Don’t kid me here, Mr. Colburn. Did you say raptors, as in Velociraptor?” Kristen asked.

    Colburn nodded.

    “Listen,” Greg announced. “those things won’t stop hunting till they get what they want. I suggest we run off to the safe house.”

    “I want to stay, if Baron and…” Kristen was interrupted.

    “Damn, girl. Baron and the others are dead. They are dead!” Knox yelled.

    “Fuck you!” Kristen shouted, then left the room.

    Knox pulled the last chord. He recalled a lot of time when he had done this to his son, Charlie. Knox never knew when to shut up. And now, in this worst occasion, he was starting to realize why he was never liked. His anger, his temper, and his own personality. This would never get them any where. And he guessed that Baron and them might still have a chance… if they are alive, that is.

    Drinnan took a glance at Greg with a frightful look. Greg noticed this and took note of it. “What the hell is he looking at me like that for?” He thought. Then he noticed something. He wasn’t looking at him, he was looking at the window. Greg glanced back and saw two lanky green creatures walking down the hall, making some kind of a honking noise. Greg froze in place.

    “Everybody down.” Colburn whispered.

    Kristen heard this and rushed into the room.

    “What?”

    “Down girl, down!” Knox whispered. She hid under the desk beside her.

    From under the desk, Colburn watched a long agile creature with two crests on the top of its head come from the hall and looked through the windows of the control room. Kristen his in the dark, escaping any sight of her. The creatures, by the way she could tell, looked like Dilophosaurus. Their long necks curled up and then expanded again looking around the walls and doors. They sniffed at the scent that was carried by humans, a peculiar smell that only they could tell was fresh prey. They peeped through the windows at the computers and desks. They couldn’t see any movement, but they could still smell the aroma, seeping in and out of their nostrils.

    Finally, Greg heard the windows break behind him. He quickly mashed himself against the walls underneath the desk, inching his way out from sight.

    The dilophosaurs creeped their way around the room, still sniffing. Bakker made a quick jerk of his leg. He realized his mistake all to well, then out of the blue, came the pain of sharp knives sawing at his legs, he lifted up his head to see his legs being chewed on by jaws. He screamed in pain at the others. He was quickly pulls out from under the desk and was now kicking off the dinosaur. But his mistake was already made, and he was now witnessing his death before his eyes when he saw the creature leap over next to his head and bend down to take a chunk off his neck out. He gasped for air but none came in, his neck was almost completely devoured by the dilophosaur.

    Colburn jumped out and looked around the room. He had laid his rifle down and he was impatiently trying to find it. All was happening to quick for him.

    Greg heard the screams and Colburn’s automatic jump for his rifle, now it seemed the perfect time to run. But as Greg came out of his hiding spot he ended up meeting face to face the creature that he was running from. His mouth dropped open and he began to walk back towards the wall. A surprise came before him, instead of the animal actually jumping at him, he found an unexpected frill to pop out out of its neck. Not only did it pop out but it quivered with fury at the sight of Greg. Suddenly black goo spit out of its mouth and into his eyes, blinding him on the spot. A burning sensation that made him fall to the floor screaming. He quickly brushed his eyes off. But the goo seem to stay with him…and so did the burning.

    Colburn shot at the dilophosaur’s head which was just about to snap at the helpless Mr. Palmer. Blood spattered to the ground like a torrent and he then focused on the other, firing right at its torso; it fell to the floor lifeless.

    Kristen looked out from under her desk and saw the sight. Colburn was at Bakker’s body with a rag tightly pressed at his neck. Greg was on the floor screaming like a banchy, Drinnan was trying to calm him down, Dr. Kingsbury was shaking his head at the very sight of all this, and finally Knox was still sprawled under the desk muttering things only he could here. She jumped up and ran towards Colburn.

    “What happened.” She said looking at Bakker struggling for life, then at the two dead bodies of the dilophosaurs.

    “I think…” Colburn saw that Bakker’s eyes were not moving and that his breathing had stopped. “…he’s dead.”

    He threw the rag at the wall, then pounded his fists on the desks. Throughout the room, the screams faded from Greg’s mouth. He was already getting tired, exhausted. His eyes were unseen by the black goo that was covering them. But his body still shook, making another kind of noise. After Colburn had mourned for Bakker, he focused on Mr. Palmer. He took his gun and walked up to him. Maybe this was the first time he had ever felt sorry for the guy… maybe.

    “Detective…move out of the way.” He pushed Drinnan aside and knelled down at Greg. “Greg.”

    Greg looked up but didn’t see anything. No light… nothing.

    “Colburn…is that you?”

    “Greg, what happened?”

    “I can’t see…that’s what fucking happened. It spat at me, gave me this!”

    “It could have been a whole lot worse, Greg. You could have been killed.”

    “It would have been better.” Greg coughed, then laid his head back on the wall.

    Colburn snapped his fingers. “Agent Knox! Get the hell out of that desk and get a rag and clean this stuff off of Greg.”

    Under the desk, Knox finally realize that everything was over and he jumped up after Colburn had said this, running towards the restroom. Kristen sat down in the chair and put her hand over her face.

    Colburn motioned for Drinnan. He quickly moved over to him.

    “Yes?” Drinnan asked with curiosity.

    “You were looking for someone right? That’s why you are here?”

    “Yeah. Lopez…Ronald Lopez, he went missing—.”

    “Yes…yes. Let me see the damn picture.”

    Drinnan pulled the photograph out of his shirt pocket and handed it to Colburn. Colburn studied it.

    “I think that’s him. I think that’s the man we saw.”

    “He is? Where was he?”

    “In the tyrannosaur nest.”

    Drinnan gulped and choked.

    “He was half eaten.” Added Colburn. “I’m sorry.”

    He simply nodded and headed off to help Knox with the wet rags. Noticing Kristen’s soft crying, Colburn decided to go talk to her. He walked up just as she wiped her nose with her sleeve, then acted like she was ok.

    “You ok?”

    “No. Not really,” said Kristen. “I’ve waited this long for some kind of response. I think they’re dead. Oh, Sam…why did you… Sam come back.”
    She teared up some more, Colburn comforted her with his hand over her shoulder.

    Dr. Kristen’s life was going haywire. She finally realized something that she had before. She thought of why she had stayed at the dig whenever some big opportunity had arrived right on her door steps. She thought about the times her and Sam had spent together. And they had never fought over anything, he was always so sweet toward her. She had strong feelings. Now she knew…she was in love with him. But she cried even more. One thing did this to her, she never told him. After thinking he was dead, she had realized this. She felt she would never be able to. She had lost her true love… a beeping sound came from the computer and Dr. Kingsbury ran to the screen. Two feet passed by on a woonden dock. Human feet!

    “What the hell… We’ve got human’s ladies and gentlemen.”

    “Where?” Kristen yelled.

    “Location…near the dock. It’s outside of our perimeter fence. We put one there because of some dinosaurs were escaping and we wanted to really keep track if they did it again.”

    Colburn shot back, “But it could be anybody if it’s at the dock.”

    “Nope. The dock is closed today…for some reason. Those two feet could be them. I don’t know where the other is though. Maybe dead.” Dr. Kingsbury pointed out.

    A new hope entered Dr. Kristen’s eyes. But still there was a chance Dr. Baron was dead, only two feet.

    “What do you think they are doing there?” Kristen asked.

    “I bet you they are getting a boat. There’s a river that runs right around here. That’s the reason. It’s got to be.” Dr. Kingsbury said.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Dr. Baron watched as Anne and Kyle ran towards him with guns attached over their shoulder. “Dr. Baron, we’ve got them!” Shouted Anne trying to keep up with Kyle. Baron waved for them to come on up. A sound entered his ear. Something in the water. He watched as bubbled formed just up ahead of him. Kyle was running towards it when…
    The head came up from the black murky water, snapping around his leg. Kyle screamed in horror as he fell forward and into the lake. Anne yelled for Kyle to come back up, but all she saw was blood in the water.
    Anne tried searching for a weapon on her body, which was wasting valuable time.
    “Anne, drop the weapons and run, now!” Shouted Baron.
    The raptor jumped up onto the dock just as she sprinted forward towards Baron up ahead. It screeched and pulled the dead body of Kyle out of the water and onto the dock, blood pouring from his chest and on to the wooden surface. The raptor snapped at his neck and started to pulll off the skin.
    As Anne ran to Baron, she saw a raptor jump in front of her and block her off. It snarled and eyed at her with fury. She didn’t know what to do at that point. Baron lifted something from one of the boats and hurled it at the raptors head. It hit with a clang and the raptor hissed with agitation toward him.
    “Come on. Come and get me!” Baron shouted at the velociraptor.
    The creature screamed and ran full force toward him. Baron gulped and ran up the aisle of boats. He quickly leaped on a yacht and ran up the steps and to the second floor. The raptor followed close by, it’s drool hanging off its lower jaw. He saw a life preserver on the floor and grabbed it up.
