    V a m p i r i c - Ch. 02
    By CarnaRaptor

“ Come,” I lifted him up and onto the coach, “ Let’s go home.” Again he cowered a little then relaxed as I patted his head.

The sun will be up in an hour. I had spent too much time talking to Hunters brother. I hadn’t even had the chance to feed yet. But it was too late now. It would have to wait until tomorrow.

We were ten minutes away from the castle. There was no rush to get home. So I slowed the horses down to a light trot, trying not to wear my horses out.

Not a word had passed either of our lips on the journey back, but neither was their tension. A calmness, which I never felt before, was making me uneasy. It had been a long time since any living mortal had stood up for me, never mind a child.

I watched as he put the horses into the stables and feed them their well- deserved meals. Then he followed me into the castle and down our winding staircase.

I walked straight past my sarcophagus, opened up a small chest and rummaged around until I found the small trinket I’d been looking for. It was a two hundred-year-old dagger from Italy. The handle was gold and encrusted with rubies and emeralds. The point was still sharp and in perfect condition.

“ Here.” I said. His mouth fell open at the sight of the beautifully hand crafted weapon. Calvin took a step back.

“ Go on, take it. You deserve such an award for helping me.”

“ Th…thank you miss.” An innocent tear fell onto the dagger.

“ Its so beautiful.” He said in awe.

“ You’re welcome. But please, stop calling me miss. My name is Ambrosia. We should have known each other better three years ago.” The boy thought for a moment then looked up with such an innocent smile.

“ I am Calvin.” That was it! So, I did know it. My memory was perfect. I could remember things all the way back to my birth in the dark world. I must not have believed it to be important enough. With the dagger placed gently in his hand, he turned and left the room.

The thought of Hunter entered my mind and almost immediately I began to worry.

“ You always did worry too much.”

I spun around, caught off guard.

    “ Hunter!” I exclaimed.

“ So I followed you here. What were you worrying about this time?”

I stared at him. Not quite knowing what to say.

“ I know you were worried. You twist your hair when you do. It’s one or your more attractive qualities!”

I still stared at him. Not quite believing that he was here. I didn’t expect to see him until tomorrow.

    “ Why are you here?”

“ George told me you didn’t like the idea of me sleeping in a memorial home.”

So he figured he could just stay here with me.

“ I’m glad you’re here.” I startled even myself by saying that.

    “ Why?”

“ You know why! I was worried about where you slept. You dwell beneath human beings that could expose you to sunlight unintentionally. It’s not the smartest place to sleep.”

“ You trust you life to a child! Is that not also dumb?”

“ Calvin would never expose me! For three years now he’s taken care of my castle during the day, took care of my horses, and never once has he said a single word about me to another mortal.”

“ That you know of.” Hunter said.

“ What do you mean? Of course I would know!”

Hunter’s only response was a smile.

    “ What?” I asked.

“ You’ve changed, when I knew you seven years ago, you’d never have defended a human’s life.”

    I shrugged my shoulders.

“ That was before you left.” I muttered.

    “ What?”

“ Nothing. Your old sarcophagus is still here. You’re welcome to use it.”

“ It’s still here? I figured you would have gotten rid of it.” He looked astonished.

“ I would have. But instead it made me wonder if I would ever need it. You never know these days.”

“ Well I am glad you kept it.”

    “ Why is that?”

“ Well, if not, we’d be sharing a coffin.” He pointed out to the rising sun.

I pushed aside my lid looking in. I laughed to myself. I doubt we’d have been sharing.

    “ You’d be burning.”

An amused chuckle arose from his throat as he looked into the tiny sarcophagus. There was hardly enough room for me. But where could you go buy a bigger coffin?

    “ Guess so!” He laughed.

    “ Hunter?”

He turned to look at me. He was already entering his coffin.

“ Why did you leave me?” I asked.

    Suddenly he swallowed.

“ We’ll talk about it tomorrow.” He replied in a deep voice.

I then crawled in to go to sleep, staring into the darkness. I crossed my arms realizing I was quite glad he was here.

Tiny sounds aroused me the next night. Hunter was already up and about. Waiting for me. My coffin lid was suddenly removed and in popped the face of a very handsome man, smiling.

“ Good sleep?” He asked. He offered his hand, which I accepted and he pulled me out.

“ The best in a few years.” I realized it was because I knew he was alive. I knew he was safe. But now, he had some explaining to do.

“ Hunter? I want you to answer my question now. Why did you leave me three years ago?”

His smile faded while his eyes lowered to stare at the floor. I didn’t like making him uncomfortable so I did the most natural thing. I left. Up the staircase my feet carried me, taking me to the north tower.

The huge oak door creaked as I opened and closed it. It was a very tiny room, filled with my books and music I have gathered over six thousand years. There was even a picture frame in the corner with a piece of parchment placed scrupulously inside. It was a letter written by Jesus Christ himself. It was a letter to some king. It was of no importance obviously, otherwise why would I have it?

A chuckle rose from my throat. Six thousand years, you expected to know many people. I still remember the day I met him. It was after John baptized him. On a bank I sat and watched with mild amusement. This was absurd non- the less. I had been human then. Otherwise I would have been in my grave then. Me, a vampire, with the written word from the Son of God.

I sighed then turned my head to the books. I even had one of Shakespeare’s plays that had never been found, however, only because I had it. He had written it for me. It was about a dark god that fed off the souls off others. The dark god soon went insane and ended up committing suicide. Shakespeare had known exactly what I was and he was never afraid of me. Quite odd, if you had asked me. Although back then, I had loved that feeling.

I also had a few poems by Keats cluttered on a shelf off to the side. This tower was a museum of wonder and never discovered art.

“ Still a collector I see.” Hunter whispered in my ear. His powerful arms encircling my waist.

“ More like a thief. People don’t even know that these beautiful things exist.” I pushed his arms away and wandered over to a bureau made in France four hundred years ago.

“ You are the only being I know that can steal the wonders of the world and lock them up in a tower.” Hunter sifted through a few books while I busied myself in a drawer in the bureau.

    “ Found it!” I declared.

“ Found what?” He took his place beside me and started at the drawer. In there sat a wooden stake, some dried flowers, a beautifully hand crafted silver locket and pictures of my castle during the day. Hunter had taken the pictures for me when he was still mortal.

“ I just couldn’t bare to part with any of these memoirs.” A tear of blood dripped from my face and landed on my hand.

For a very long moment nothing was said. Hunter made a move for my hand and very gently brought it to his lips. His ice-cold tongue licked off the blood, then he moved my lifeless hand across his cheek.

    “ I’m sorry.” He whispered.

“ Oh well.” I put the drawer back into the bureau and then turned to leave.

“ Stop running,” he appeared in front of the door, “We need to talk about all this.”

“ There is nothing to talk about. You tried to kill me and when you didn’t succeed, we fell in love with each other. You said you loved me and wanted to spend all eternity with me. I gave you immortality and you gave me heartache. You left me with no hint as to where you were or where you were going!” The anger in me was building to a very dangerous level.

Hunter was about to speak, but I flung him away with a single stare of my eyes. He almost broke one of my favorite Roman artifacts but I didn’t care. All that matters was getting out of this room. I felt confined.

Halfway down the stairs Hunter had caught up to me. He appeared in front of me. His hand lashed out and pinned me up against the wall. Instead of anger, his face had worry and pain written all over.

“ I couldn’t tell you,” he cried, “ You would have made me destroy it. I couldn’t have done that!”

    “ What?”

“ I wanted to test it. See if it worked! Then they started to appear! They followed me everywhere!” A look of pure terror and fear had entered his eyes.

“ What Hunter? What have you done? Who was following you? Tell me!” I was now frantically shaking him.

“ I meant no harm! But I couldn’t stop them! They are still after me!”

I slapped him across the face for hope that he would come back to sense.

“ Calm down,” I said rationally, “Now explain what happened slowly! It’ll be ok once you tell me who’s following you.”

I knew it was pretty important if it scared a vampire. Although never in my dreams did I imagine it would be so bad.
