    I C E T E R I A - Ch. 4
    By CarnaRaptor

    I C E T E R I A

The trip has begun for Johnathon Julius and Donna Svehla. After some quick packing of clothes and necessities, they were almost ready to embark on their expedition. They and six native villagers of Scandinavia each were equipped with handguns and other minor artillery incase something came across them, but Julius wasn't really worried about anything.

It was a crisp winter afternoon out here at these docks in Scandinavia. They had been given two boats upon request from a local shipping yard, and now all Johnathon hoped for is that Ronald Sherwitz would hopefully show up soon.

"Johnathon, cmon., he's not going to come. The people are getting antsy and we've kept them waiting for too long. Call him later on the sattelite phone or something"

Johnathon Julius stared away in disregard and boarded the boat. He really did hope Sherwitz would show up.

"Oh well" said Donna. Her eyes then opened in awe of a car rushing towards the docks. "John, look! It's Professor Sherwitz!"

Johnathon leaped onto the dock and waited for the car to pull up. Ronald Sherwitz stepped out of the car, and his wife came along also. Johnathon went over to greet them.

"Oh thank you Professor, Thank you for giving me a chance." said Johnathon motioning them to where their boats were.

"Im not here to give you a chance. I'm here so that i can say "I told you so" and so that I make sure you make no more stupid decisions on this embarkment"

Johnathon just shook it off, at least he came, he thought to himself. "C'mon lets go"

And so the boats left with Ronald Sherwitz, Sharon Alexander, Johnathon Julius, Donna Svehla and some villagers aboard them. Now all that was left to do is reach this land the local peoples fabled of. Johnathon was having a conversation with one of the villagers on the directions to this place. After a minute or two he then told the others of whats ahead.

"Well, the man said to just basically go straight until you come across the land. Not a very descriptious fellow don't you think?" said Johnathon.

"What's with the guns?" asked Sharon pointing to Ronalds side with her shivering finger.

"Precautions my love. Just incase Nessie decided to make a guest appearence" said Ronald in a humorous tone. "I also must say Johnathon, you were right about the weather. There doesn't seem to be nothing more than a cool breeze moving through here."

As if it were on quoue, a strong wind pushed through and tilted the boats a little bit.

"Haha, a little bit of an early assumption sir?" said Johnathon. Ronald, John, Donna, and Sharon all had a quick laugh. The weather had begun to get considerably cooler though, and the wind seemed to pick up. It's been a good four hours since they had left the mainland.

"Ahh, look! I believe I can see the brim of the island. I'll go check with the others to make sure" said Donna, referring to the villagers as the 'others'.

"Yes, they say that's the place."

Everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief.

    "Finally" said a bored Sharon.

At that moment the villagers began to bicker and point to something to the left. Ronald noticed this and looked out. He was astonished by what he saw.

    "Jesus christ"

"What Ronald? What?" asked Johnathon, he then too noticed when he looked in the direction of where Ronald was. A giant wave that must have been at least fifty feet high was coming at a speed they couldn't prepare for.

"Rogue Wave!! Come on try to get this thing out faster!!" screamed Johnathon. It was too late, the wave smacked and crushed the little boats sending everybody sprawling into the cold Atlantic. The wincing pain of the cold water was unbearable to some. They screamed and looked for something to grab onto. Minutes later it was quiet, as most of the people had gone unconsious. The others were spilling to the bottom of the ocean. Dead.

    ******************

Ronald Sherwitz woke up. That must have been a dream, he thought. It was all just one bad drea. After a moment, he knew it wasn't. His body ached and shivered from the frozen plunder. After some groaning and patience, he made his way to his feet. Where was he?
He had washed aside onto the island. He didn't know how long he's been out, but he knew he had to look for other survivors.

"Ronald!" screamed a voice over behind him. He turned to see Sharon, Johnathon, and Donna all coming towards him along with three villagers.

"Ronald we'd been looking everywhere along this place for you. Thank god you're still alive" said a concerned Sharon.

"Where are the others?" asked Sherwitz.

"They didn't survive sir, we've looked around this brim and a tiny icecap a mile down from here. Looks like three are dead"

Ronald stared at the other survivors. The villagers cried over the departed, it made Ronald thankful actually. No loved one of his died...yet.

"So im guessing we're at the place?" asked Donna

"Indeed. By the way we retrieved some goods also so we musn't worry for the time being" said Johnathon.

"Well then, come on. We must find some shelter"

They walked off into a forest full of snowcapped trees. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. No wildlife, just boring trees.

"Hey, look, there's a cave up ahead" Sharon said in high spirits. A moderately sized cave was carved inside this enormous rock down ahead by a stream. They approached it and made way.

"Excellent, its getting dark also. We'll be sleeping-in for the night"

    *************************

Sharon Alexander woke up the next morning replenished. The others were still sleeping, but she needed a drink bad. She went down by the streambed and swiped up a cup of water. She didn't realize how thirsty she was. Sharon then heard a large rumbling sound up from behind her. She turned around was bewildered by what she saw. She screamed for the others to wake up.

    "What honey, jesus....tryin....sleep"

"Ronald! Hurry up come look at this!"

If her screaming didn't wake up the others, the shaking of the ground did. Sharon grabbed Ronald by the hand and pulled him outside.

Ronald was still tryin to open his eyes, but when he saw what Sharon was talking about, he was wide awake.

    "Oh my god"

Just ahead of them, in the forest, a group of huge hairy animals trounced through the crisp snowy forest. They had huge tusks that could intimidate anything. Sharon, Ronald and company were looking at wooly mammoths, alive after 10,000 years.

"B-b-But....H-h-How....Damn" said a still bewildered Sherwitz. The others were just as amazed as he was. Johnathon came out with a camera in hand and started photographing these graceful mammoth beasts.

    "Fascinating"

"What is that?" asked Donna, catching her breath.

"A wooly mammoth my dear. These ones are much larger than fossil records suggested. At least twenty feet tall i'd say. Absolutely gorgeous" said Johnathon, who seemingly wasn't as intimadated as everyone else.

"Johnathon...How...How could this be possible?" asked Ronald.

"Like I've been trying to say. Its all quite simple. This is some sort of a 'lost world' that made it through the years following the ice age. This showing of adaptation is unheard of and unbelievable. It's a rather brilliant success story".

The groundshaking had passed and so did the mammoths. For one minute they were witnessing something that hasn't been seen, alive, for thousands of years.

"Whatelse do you think is out there?" asked Sharon.

"That is uncertain, but what is certain is that we must explore more of this land" said Johnathon

"Absolutely not Johnathon. Not now. We are all still unprepared physically for what could be ahead. We need sleep" said Ronald. The rest of the group followed Ronald back into the cave. All except for Johnathon, who quietly made his way out into the unseen lost world. With nothing but a pistol and camera, he ventured off away from the group, not realizing that a mile away there were two glowing eyes staring at him hidden behind the icy foliage.
