    By BrachioInGen

    Chapter Two: Unholy Practices
    *********************************************

The metal cage rattled, echoing the deafening roar of the animal it held within. It was near midnight. The moon was only a soft glow in the sky, masked by the darkening rain clouds.

The soft breeze and the smell of rain crept into the clearing. Distant clouds gave small displays of their power; lighting jumping from cloud to cloud, and even more distant still, muffled flashes.

James Muldoon watched with displeasure. The work crew were navigating the transport cage fine, but the animal inside was living hell. Utahraptor. Vicious, ripping machines. Eating practically anything in their site, or so he had studied.

When the deal had been struck, BioSyn had decided to send a small research team to Isla Sorna. It was far from the place he had expected. The island was in utter chaos. The island had far too many predators on it. The herbivore species were simply being obliterated. By his estimates, if they hadn’t done something when they did, there would have been one less hadrosaur species, ever 6 weeks.

The first species they had decided to take from the island were the main, huge carnivores and the erbivores that had no predators, in a small effort to help the struggling hadrosaur. This proved tricky in both planning and deployment. Millions of dollars of equipment had been ruined or scraped due to unseen errors or simply being destroyed, when they used the oldest trick in the book. They left a wounded heifer in a cage, and played mating calls for each individual carnivore. It worked.

“Calm her down!” James finally yelled, knowing it would be of little help. The Utahraptor tended to stay in small packs, and when separated became confused and agitated quickly. This one was no different.

“If she doesn’t calm down, tranq. her!” James finished, glancing in-between the fence and the cage, watching the gap close. The work crew scurried around the cage, slowly pulling the sliding doors from the sides of the cage. the cage rattled a little bit, and then suddenly with a swift blur, the Utahraptor shot out of the cage.

She was now in the second to main park area. She was in the smaller, but still large area for the animals to get used to the island setting. The area was equipped with feeding tanks and foliage.

The crew proceeded to grab the two sliding doors and push them back, closing off the cage once more. Muldoon should have seen this coming. There was a swift shot, and a large bang, and with a jump, the Utahraptor had landed on the electrical fence.

There was an enormous flash of light, and the sizzling of sparks. The crew simultaneously ducked. Muldoon looked up and the Utahraptor lain stunned on the ground. It jumped back up, and gave a loud shriek, and with a flash, she was gone.

Muldoon took a swig of his Dasani and gestured to the jeep driver, who refused. The rain had started to come down and boy was it ever. The storm was strong just barely missing the island but heading for the mainland. It was going to be bad, not for them, but for the mainland. It would still be extremely strong when it hits, wiping out towns and villages. And anything else in it’s way.

The road was terrible. All dirt, of course now it was all mud. the rain pounded on the jeep like a plastic and metal drum. It was driving the driver mad. He could tell, he had that way with people, he could look at them, listen to them, and he understood them.

“How was your day Joe?” James asked, finally breaking the relative silence.

“It’s been quiet. The utahraptor’s have started a new pride. The rex’s are still in the transferring cage; and the Dilophosaurus look like their fine,” he paused, pushed his head against the window to see, and said “except this danged storm. Knocked out a few fences already...”

There was a hiss, and the hand radio he had began to talk:
This is Control room calling all vehicles. Please report to the compound’s garage. And would Mr. Muldoon please come to the control room. Over.

Then, simultaneously the other vehicles clicked in, reporting their positions and their status.

Then Joe picked up the radio and began:
This is Jeep vehicle One Five. I have Mr. Muldoon here in the car with me. We are en route to the Compound. Time to check in, 15 minuets, we are just passing the visitors lodge.

And that they were. The visitors Lodge was a large building, half of an oval, with a dome on the top, and a small hall in the back. It was all glass. The exterior was made of all glass. It was supposed to look luxurious, but to Robert it looked like an accident waiting to happen.

This park was not just based around scientist. It was also based around tourism. Certain aspects of the island had been set up that way. The Visitors lodge, the Jurassic Café and even a small tour route through the compound. It seamed like a great idea, one that would make enormous profit. But seamed very scary if it ever did come true.

The 3 inch thick steel door unlocked with a clank, automatically opening. James put his clearance card back into his shirt pocket. He walked into the control room, glancing at a few monitor’s, and then walking over to his desk. A man ran up to him.

“Sir! I’m glad you’re here, we found some interesting dinosaur behaviors on some of teh cameras!” the man said enthusiastically.

James couldn’t hep but stare over the man’s shoulder, watching the monitors and listening to the other workers. There was something going on, something big.

“Wha...What?” James asked, shifting his concentration.

“Come look!” The man grabbed James by the arm and walked him over to his desk. The monitor showed a repeating tape.

“This is a feed from one of the cameras we placed on Isla Sorna to watch over it, see how what we are doing is affecting the island. We found this. It’s a tape of one of a group of dinosaurs, velocoraptors. Notice how they huddle together in the rain!” the student said enthusiastically. He went on describing many behavioral patterns. James acted like he was interested, but with one ear he was listening to the growing ruckus.

The rain was coming down in torrents. The waves were rocking a large cargo craft just off the shore of Costa Rica, on it’s way to Los Angelus. Men were busily rushing about the bridge, but that was all James could make out on the monitors, he wasn’t sure what was wrong until he heard one of the people talking to the cargo vessel over the radio.

“Drop anchor and reverse the engines.” one of the operators yelled.

There was a large static pop, a small hiss.

“The anchor is jam... the engines can’t take... ny more...”

There was a long silence. Then the cargo vessel radioed in again.

    “Were going to ground!”

The group suddenly went into an uproar. The radio started to go to pure static, the cameras on board began to cut out, one by one, there was a sudden shaking of the last camera, and then all went black.

“Isn’t this so exciting, it’s the first time this has ever...sir, sir! Where...I’m not done yet.” but by then James had walked away from the table and joined the group.

    “What happened?” he yelled out.

“One of the cargo vessels just grounded..” one man said.
“...something we’ve been trying to keep it from doing for the past three hours.” another man chimed in.

“What was the manifest?” James asked. The entire room went silent. They all looked up.
“What was the dang manifest!” he said urgently.

One of the women turned and shuffled threw her draw, and pulled out a small stapled packed of paper. In it were all the lists of all the manifest. She flipped threw it, looking for the last date.

She found it, it had a list of everything they had brought on the boat, everything they had expected to catch, and everything they did. She looked up, and outreached her arm.

    “Uh, sir..”

James turned to her and took it. He opened the packet to the page of the animals caught. He began to read the list aloud.

“...3 ankylosaurus, 2 velocoraptors, 3 carnotaurs; two adults one juvenile, 8 compies, and one..” he froze, staring at the paper. He looked up sharply.

“We’ve got to get out there.”

    InGen complex; 12:30
    ****************************************

Richard Nesky sat at the table in the darkened sipping his hot coffee. It was late, he hated holding these late meeting but it was time to put step one of his plan into action. He had called it late at night, having a suspicious feeling about BioSyn. The hurricane outside raged with furry. They were only getting a small whip from it, but it still packed a punch.

“Mr. Nesky, sir, he's here.” the secretary said, opening the door just wide enough to fit in.

    “Excellent, good. Send him in.”

The secretary opened wide the door. A man in his 30 walked in, dressed in a black business suite.

“I’m glad you could make it. This weather is not very permitting.” Richard began, motioning to a chair. The man remained standing looking solely at Richard. The secretary closed the door behind her.

“Have you received the instruction yet?” Richard begged, almost whispering.

“Yes, that I have sir. I am ready to begin phase 2.”

“No, no not yet,” Richard interjected. “This storm must clear first. We don’t want anything to look suspicious. We can’t leave until that hurricane is gone and there is clear weather.”

    “Understood sir.”

“You understand that by accepting this,” Richard paused, looking at the man, “you are accepting all the risks and that if anything were to go wrong, and they survived. You would be to blame.”

“I understand sir and accept full responsibility for my actions.”
“Good. Good.” Richard finished, taking another drink of his coffee. The man turned to exit.

“Oh! I almost forgot. This operation is now called Project S.A.M. Remember that. If anything were to go wrong, and you needed me, just use beep me at that number and type in SAM no the phone. I'll send someone to get you.”

The man nodded, turned and walked out the door. Richard sat in his chair. He was excited. It was going all as planned. Nothing would stand in his way of getting back what he wanted. Not this time, and not ever again.

Costa Rican shoreline; two days later
    ****************************************

James fidgeted with his hat. He was nervous. This had never happened before. Never! Now a boat load of animals had slammed onto shore. Hopefully the boat was still intact, with the animals inside it. He hoped.

The Helicopter followed the shoreline. It has been 20 minuets and still not a sign. miles and miles of untouched forest. Completely barren of any human existence.

James glanced out the window, there was a flash of lighting, and something caught his eye. It looked metallic.

“There she is!” James yelled, pointing out the window. Everyone got up from their seats to look out the window. The rain was still coming down in torrents, which made it hard too see out the window. All they could see where large pieces of metal, wreckage of the ship. Nothing looked alive. The entire ship had been gutted. Nothing could survive that crash, nothing, not a dinosaur, not a human.

The helicopter pilot began to take the helicopter down to land in the clearing near where some trees had been knocked down. The helicopter began to shake more violently, the lower they got.

The helicopter finally got 3 feet from the ground. Everyone where in their seats, holding on, seatbelts fastened. There was a sudden up draft and the helicopter began to rock. There was a loud bang. Suddenly from the beach came a huge wave up from the short cliff. The water sprayed up splashing the helicopter.

The pilot finally abandoned the idea of landing and brought the helicopter up. James watched out the window as the jungle below got smaller and smaller, then zoomed away. Nothing could have survived that crash, and if anyone had, they would send another helicopter later, once the storm had passed. But he knew nothing could have survived that crash. The impact alone ripped open the belly of the ship. then the final crash destroyed or severely damaged the rest. The bridge and other personnel areas had simply been crushed by the half capsized vessel, and were slowly being worn away by the waves.

    Nothing had survived.

    10 month’s later

    Elie’s House
    ****************************************

“Next up on The Discovery Channel:” the television announced. Charlie had been watching the TV since his mother had gone up stairs to take a shower. Mark had left. Charlie was upset, he didn’t know if his father was coming back or not. His parents had gotten into a big fight that night. It scared him.

The phone started ringing. He jumped up from the couch, muting the tv and picked up the phone.

    “Hello?”

“Yes,” the voice replied, “Is Elie Degler there?”

“Yes, but she’s in the...” Charlie was interrupted.

    “One moment please.”

Music started playing, jazzy music. Then a voice came on “You are listening to InGen phone lines. We make your future. Please stay tuned.” The voice ended and was replaced by music again. Charlie had enough of waiting. He took the phone from his ear, when he heard the music stop.

    “Mrs. Degler?”

Charlie quickly picked up the phone again.

“Uh, this is her son, Charlie.”

“Oh, well. Charlie. This is Richard Nesky From InGen corp. We were wondering....” Charlie interjected.

“No my mom wouldn’t like to buy anything, goodbye.”

“Oh heavens no, this isn’t about that. You see, your mother co-owns.... an island. Isla Sorna...” Charlie quickly jumped in again.

“ISLA SORNA! THE DINOSAUR ISLAND! HOW?! WHEN?!”

“Yes Charlie,” Richard said laughing, “The dinosaur island. You see, Charlie. We were wondering if your mummy would like to go on an...aerial tour of the island. See it’s wildlife.”

“Oh I’m sorry Mr. Nesky,” Charlie started, “but my mother has said to me many times that she will never go back there.”

“Oh but Charlie, this is a different island. But, If I could persuade you, to convince your mother, I might even let you go.”

The was a long silence. Charlie wanted to run up to his mother right then and tell her he wanted to go and that she should go, but he had gotten so excited, he couldn’t even talk.

“Yes...YES Mr. Nesky, I’ll do ALL I can to get her to go!”

“Good. Charlie, remember to have mummy call me back. I’ll have my secretary give her all the information she needs. Good night Charlie.”

Charlie simply hung up, he was out of words. So he did the only thing he could think of.

    “MOM!!!”

    Indian Jungle 10:45 PM
    ****************************************

Nick crouched down into the newly wet fern. One palm frond wiped across his face, smearing the already flowing blood along with it. It was late, Nick checked his watch, 10:45. The camp was probably wondering where he was but he couldn’t return, not yet.

Nick had been sent out to almost all corners of the globe, looking searching; Ever since the San Diego Incident and the worlds sudden awakening to what was going on behind closed laboratory doors, a new group had been commissioned by the United Nations and NATO. This group went around the world, investigating strange occurrences that could possibly have something directly or indirectly to do with the Island. They weren’t taking their chances again...

Nick wiped the blood away and moved the frond out of his face. A large river extended between him and the other embankment. There was a light breeze and the trickle of water when the trees on the other side of the river began to shake and a small purr erupted from it.

Nick began to wish he hadn’t tripped on the rocks a few minuets ago, now he was down wind and with a gash on his face. The animal, whatever it was, could tell he was there but choose not to attack.

He reached for his camera, and crouched walked forward, moving almost to the waters edge. He looked when his eye caught something. An eye, glowing from the moonlight. Nick Froze. There was another purr, and a strange yelp, one that was almost identical to the one he remember the....

    “RING!”

Nick nearly jumped through the air. He had forgotten to turn his phone off! He looked forward into the trees again but the animal had scampered off. He reached into his bag and removed his Satellite phone. If it was a telemarketer he was going to kill himself.

“Hello?” Nick asked sitting down in the ferns, putting stuff he had taken out of his bag back into it.

    “Mr. Van Owen? Can you..”

“Yes, I can hear you, who is this?” Nick stood up, taking his bag over his shoulder, and walking across the 3 inch deep water.

“Mr. Owen, this is Richard Nesky, CEO of InGen Corp. I have some important matters to discuss with you. How soon do you think you could get a flight to San Francisco?”

Nick pondered a minuet, bending over, moving ferns out of the way an examining the tracks left behind in the river bank.

“Oh, I don’t know Mr. Nesky. It’s hard to get flights out here where you send us.”

One of the more debatable moves of NATO and the United Nations was handing over the leadership of the special team to InGen, whom they felt responsible for it, believing they should now have to pay for the group and lead it.

“Ahh, I understand. I shall send a private Jet out there to get you tonight. Will you be ready? I will only need you. Your team will stay, just grab some clothes, and wait for the plane at the airstrip.”

“What is it that you need me for?” Nick asked, placing his fingers on the animals strange tracks. Two muffles prints and a strange slash in the mud...could have been caused by a tiger or some other large feline, but he had a strange feeling it wasn’t...

“We shall discuss that when you arrive. Until then..” but before Nick could respond the phone cut out and eventually went dead. He looked around at the tracks. Apparently he wasn’t the only one startled by the phone. The animal had scampered off so fast that none of the tracks yielded much more than an animal had been there.

He had a long walk back to the camp, but his bleeding had stopped. So he stood up and headed back the way he had come.

    National History Museum of Montana
    ****************************************

“Here we go.” Alan said slapping the information desk, giving a light smile to the woman working there. He walked away from the desk toward the entrance where a large group of people stood.

“Hello and Welcome to the Natural History Museum of Montana! I hope you enjoy your stay here and I will be your tour guide...”

“ALAN GRANT!” a smile child yelled. The group erupted immediately, everyone spouting out questions at him, taking pictures and puling out pads for autographs.

“Please....PLEASE! Ladies and Gentlemen. We will have time for all this after the tour. But first I’d like to set off this way..towards...” Alan swallowed, realizing his mistake, “the dinosaurs....”

“This skeleton belonged to one of the most cunning animals to ever roam the earth. The Velocoraptor.”

The crowd began immediately to click pictures of it, walking around it, and reaching into the display at it.

    One kid raised his hand.

    “Yes, young man..”

“Mr. Grant, what did the velocoraptor look like?”

Grant looked at the kid, realizing the kid was far too young to know about Jurassic Park, and about his story, but he knew everyone else was too, anxious to find out.

Grant looked behind the crowd and saw his assistant come in.

“Frank, I need to use the rest room, can you take the group for me, I’ll catch up a bit later.”

Frank turned to him and nodded.

Alan walked past him, thanking him and walking out into the lobby where he had also noticed Billy Brenan walk in.

“So, how have you been Billy?” Alan asked, sitting down in one of the Museums restaurants with his ice cappuccino.

“Pretty good Alan. I occasionally get a small headache from where I screwed up that disk in my neck, but besides that I’ve been good.”

“That’s good.” Alan added, smiling. “I just had to get out of there, one of the kids recognized me...there’s always one. And then the rest went nuts asking for autographs and asking questions. Dose no one realize that it was HELL what we went through. There is no reason to envy me, but they don’t get it, they never do. They never realize how special the gift is to see the bones and eggs, but the real thing is....”

“Mr. Grant!” came a call from behind them. They both turned to see Sarah Harding running over waving.

“How are you doing Alan!” Sarah said, slapping Alan on the shoulder and giving a light squeeze.

“Pretty good Sarah, Billy and I were just catching up, care to join us?”

    “Sure!”

    “Billy, I don’t believe we’ve met. My names Sarah, I’m Ian’s wife.”

    “Pleasure to meet you.”

“So, how do you know Alan?”

“Oh,” Billy started, “ we go back a few years when I was in his Archeology class. Then to the incident on Sorna. And Just came back to see him, how he was doing..”

Sarah sat for a second, not saying anything. Her gaze stayed locked on Billy.

“You’ve been....to the island...” she trailed of leaning over the table.

“I was with Alan when we were brought to the island all ...5 and ½ years ago.”

Sarah sat in disbelief for a minuet. She turned to Alan, and fell out of the daze.

“OH! Alan! That reminds me! Elie, she called me. She and Charlie are going out on a small trip tomorrow with a man. Richard...Richard....something or other. She invited me, but I had to decline.”

    “Where is she going?”

    “Back....”

“Back?!” Alan asked, unsure of what she meant, fearing that what she meant was...

“Back to the island...She wanted to know if you wanted to come.”

Alan jumped from his seat knocking over his cup, and spilling it over the table.

“BACK! IS SHE NUTS! WHY WOULD SHE GO BACK!”

“Calm down Alan. She’s going with that guy. Richard something or other. He owns InGen. It’s just a simple surveillance flight, nothing to worry. There going in to fly over the island and get some footage. Nothing more. Frankly I don't trust the guy, but it seams harmless. I declined because I have some work to attend to back at the colledge. But what about you, are you going to go?”

Alan stood for a second, watching as Billy cleaned up the mess. Billy looked up.

“ No....Were going to stop her...”

    California Interstate Road 11:00
    ****************************************

“Damned my luck.” Josh yelled, kicking the flat tire to his car. He had been asked to stay late at the office, clearing up some last minuet files on the Johnson case. His wife was already mad at him for volunteering for the late work so much, but now, he was gonna have to sleep on the couch.

Josh walked around to the back of his Geo, opening the trunk and bouncing out the spare. He realized he’d need the little lifter thing, he wasn’t one for cars, and didn't know the name of the different parts. He had no use for that knowledge.

There was a rustling in the woods behind him. His face shot up, and looked out. He didn’t see anything. Just darkened trees and shadows.

    “Hmmm, probably just the wind.”

He walked back to the trunk and pulled it out, wheeling it under the car.

There was a strange noise, like a growl, but gurgling.

His gaze shifted back towards the woods. This time he saw something. A glimmer of light. When suddenly the trees themselves seamed to move, and change. The woods was moving towards him at a slow pace. Josh screamed in utter horror and ran for the car door.

“Hunny your going to fast! Slow down!”

    “Let me drive Merial.”

    “Your still going to fast.”

“Merial.” he said in reply, obviously irritated.

The night had been long and Merial wouldn’t stop bugging him and critiquing and correcting his driving habits. If she wanted to drive, he’d let her. But of course, that wasn’t the point.
    “DAN, LOOKOUT!”

He looked forward when suddenly a small car flew a few feet into the road, as if upended and plopped back down in the road. Grabbing the steering wheel, he spun the SUV but ended up striking the car almost head on. He felt his world spin, and when it was all over, he looked out his window, seeing a large shadowy object move into the forest...but it couldn’t be, he was delusional. He wiped his eyes, and it was gone.

He turned to his wife, who had a small stream of blood on her forehead, but nodded that she was alright.

Dan got out of the car, almost tripping over a couple big holes in the ground, walking over to the near crumpled Geo. He knocked on the window. The man inside didn’t move.

“HELLO! ARE YOU ALRIGHT!” Dan yelled, jerking the door open.

The man didn’t move. Dan checked his pulse. The man was dead. There was a large gash across his arm and his face was a mixture of a scream of shock and horror. But the man was dead. There was no way to know why.
