The reason that McDonald's decided against Jurassic Park' Happy Meal toys? Toys for another PG-13 film, 'Batman Returns', had gotten them in trouble with parents groups the year before, who claimed that the film was too violent to be associated with children's Happy Meals. (From: Doug)

    SMALLVILLE 7.1

    SMALLVILLE 7.1

This is just a scene I have embedded into my brain that I think would translate well onto the small screen should the story be headed in this direction. Because of what happened in the season finale, I’m limited to few narrative options... can’t read the minds of the Smallville writers, but as a fan-fiction, I can do my best to expand on the material we’ve been left with. So, here it is: Lana’s funeral.

Basically, after Clark takes out Bizarro and everyone resumes their lives, we get to this scene. Louis winds up rescuing Chloe, Chloe turns out to be de-energized from using her power, Lionel’s fine (or not), and Lex is back at the mansion after lengthy questioning over the alleged murder of Lana Lang. We learn that Lana faked her death (with the help of a certain Justice League member) to escape Lex’s watchful eye and to protect Clark’s secret. She asks Green Arrow to keep her existence a secret to Clark because in not doing so, he will place their lives in relentless danger.

The scene begins with Clark, who has secluded himself in the barn. Martha Kent can’t seem to persuade him to attend Lana’s memorial service, so she begs Chloe for her help. Chloe enters the barn house:

CHLOE (walking up the barn steps): Can’t pick up your phone?

CLARK (peering into the telescope, then turning around solemnly): Didn’t hear it ring.

CHLOE (raising an eyebrow when spotting Clark’s phone on his dresser): You can hear a teapot whistle at the Talon, but not a phone ringing on your dresser? You’re gonna have to do better than that Clark Kent.

CLARK: Please, Chloe, now is not the time for– I just want to be alone.

CHLOE: Look, Clark, it’s not like you’re the only one going through this. When Lana died, she didn’t just leave you... she left all of us.

    CLARK: It’s different Chloe.

CHLOE: How? Because you loved her? Because-

CLARK: Because I’ve lost her once before. Because I’ve lost her once before and I’ve spent... I’ve spent all of myself trying to keep her safe... I just... shouldn’t have turned my back on her when I did.

    CHLOE: You’re not serious?

CLARK: It was a vulnerable time, you know. Lex was-

CHLOE: Clark, Lana’s death is not your fault.

    CLARK: I should’ve been there.

CHLOE: Clark, stop, just stop. You’ve always been there for her. You’ve always been there for all of us, but you can’t... you can’t save everyone. That’s just something you’re going to have to accept. That even though you’ve been given these... extraordinary abilities, you’re still... just human when it comes to being able to do so much.

Chloe gets up and heads for the stairs.

CHLOE: Your mom sent me up here to see if I could get you to come to the service... I’m not gonna try any harder than I have already. I know you’re hurting... but if you’re gonna beat yourself up for not being there for her, you have a chance to be there for her now. With all of us.

Chloe descends down the steps leaving Clark to himself, the sun penetrating his eyes.

    Cue Song: “Storm” by Lifehouse.

    CUT TO:

    INT. CHAPEL - DAY

The song continues to play throughout the following scenes. People, dressed appropriately in black, begin to fill the chapel seats. Chloe and Jimmy Olsen take a seat next to Martha Kent. Martha looks at Chloe– she shakes her head. Martha frowns.

    CUT TO:

    INT. BARN - DAY

Clark buckles his cuffs and straightens his tie in front of a mirror. As he takes in a deep breath, Clark shuts his eyes to relive a brief moment between Lana and him. It’s the moment just before they made love for the first time. Lana’s tending to Clark’s wounds, when he asks “You can never be sure of what happens tomorrow, can you?”Lana replies, “No, you can’t.” They kiss and Clark opens his eyes, brought back to the barn.

Now dressed in a dark blazer and slacks, Clark descends down the barn steps and out into the farm.

    EXT. KENT FARM - DAY

Just as he’s about to enter his truck, Clark looks around cautiously. He feels as if he’s being watched (and he is, unknowingly by Lana from her Aunt’s house across the way from her telescope). Gathering enough sense of security, Clark slams the door to the truck and decides to fly instead. His flight reflects off Lana’s telescope lense.

    INT. LANA’S HOUSE - DAY

Lana rises away from her crouched position and watches the ant-sized Clark disappear into the sky. Tears well-up in her eyes. OLIVER QUEEN (aka GREEN ARROW) appears behind her.

    OLIVER: Should get going.

Lana turns around and hesitatingly nods.

    EXT. CHAPEL - DAY

Clark glides down into a forested region and stares at the chapel before going inside. He spots Lex Luthor waiting outside the chapel steps. He approaches him.

CLARK: You’ve got a lot of nerve showing up here.

LEX: Here? This porch is as far as anyone will let me in. Here is all I’ve got.

CLARK: Yeah, well you can thank your wealth for that one. If it were up to me, you’d be rotting in prison right now for what-

LEX (infuriated): Give it a rest, Clark. Lana was my wife... she was my future and the only good thing about it for that matter. Do you honestly think, I would-

CLARK: Yes. But it doesn’t matter what I think Lex because here you are, in spite of where you should be. Lana wasn’t anything more to you than a finger to slip a diamond ring on.

LEX: Watch it Clark. You’re just one shovel of dirt away from burying any chance we’ve got at maintaining a shreds-worth of civility.

CLARK: Then consider us six feet under. As far as I’m concerned, Lana was the only thing we had in common Lex. She’s gone now... and so are my reasons for trusting you.

Clark opens the doors to the chapel and enters, while Lex stays behind and watches his family reel Clark in with hugs. Lex grinds his teeth at the sight, while allowing a gust of wind to blow his trench coat off his shoulder.

    CUT TO:

    INT. CAR - DAY

Lana stares out the passenger-side window in deep contemplation. Oliver, taking the wheel, looks over at Lana.

OLIVER: You’re doing the right thing.

LANA: Yeah... well, I can’t afford to be wrong about this... can I?

    EXT. CAR - DAY

The car speeds past a sign that reads “WELCOME TO GOTHAM CITY.” Roll credits, end song.
