    Prologue: Beyond the Fog

Eric Kirby stared at the undulating waves caused by the speed boat, which was approaching Isla Sorna with incredible speed. He had been looking forward to this trip for the past couple of weeks. The very thought of living, breathing dinosaurs made him both extatic and a bit scared. Creatures that have been extinct for millions of years suddenly thrown into the mix of our present world, was a pretty frightening thought. No matter, he was far more excited than he was scared.

Ben Larson, his mother’s first boyfriend since the divorce, accompanied him on the trip. Eric liked Ben, not that he didn’t like his own dad, but Ben seemed to be more of the outgoing type. His father was more of the, “Make sure you wear a helmet” type, even when all he would be doing is walking down a neighborhood sidewalk. “Safety comes first!” his father had always said.

Another man by the name of Enrique Santiago, also accompanied them on the trip. He was the one taking them to the prehistoric island. Apparently Enrique had been doing this for two years; taking people as close to the island as possible. The more money offered, the closer you got. Ben had given Enrique enough money to last him until next Christmas, which means they were going to get as close as you can get to the island.

Ever since the news of a Site B flooded every television screen in America, people have been wanting to see the dinosaurs up close. That’s where Enrique had the brilliant idea of taking paying customers to the island; secretly of course. Isla Sorna was forbidden from the public by the Cost Rican Government. Not a boat, nor airplane could even remotely travel near the island. But “illegal” was a word Enrique didn’t have in HIS dictionary.

“We’re almost there,” Ben said pointing to the fog covered island.

Eric looked, setting a handheld camera on the floor. His excitement grew, with every glance at the approaching island.

Enrique looked back and smiled. Wait until he showed his family the wad of cash he got today! “Get your camera out. It’s picture time!” Enrique said entering the river of the island.

Nothing could be seen yet, especially since the fog covered much of their view. Ben and Eric sat in the boat, as a cool draft came upon them. The fog grew thicker, so thick that nothing could be seen ahead of them. They looked to the side and saw nothing.

“We’ll go a bit further, but not to close,” Enrique said. It was obvious he had done this more than once. Nothing had ever gone wrong in the past two years he’d been doing this. But there was always a first time for everything.

As they went deeper into the fog and into the island, birds began to flutter around them, as if they were disturbed by something. Ben and Eric thought nothing of it. Soon enough the fog lingered all around them, so thick that they couldn’t even see the hands they waved in front of them. The further they went, the fog began to disappear. The sun light began to break away the fog, making everything clear, only to reveal a large frightening beast with a sail of at least five feet in height, drinking water from the pond ahead.

Enrique’s eyes widened. He had never encountered anything of this magnitude before. The sight of the creature left him in complete awe. He slowed the boat down, until it finally stopped. Ben and Eric studied the ancient features of the creature.

“Holy shit,” Ben said focusing the camera on the dino as it drank from the river. It stood a good eighteen feet high, right smack dab in the middle of the river. They were approximately thirty feet away from the once extinct reptile. Eric was a bit frightened while the other two, Ben and Enrique, were completely intrigued.

“I think we should go now,” Eric said tugging on Ben’s shirt.

Ben gently removed Eric’s hand and said, “This is what we came for Eric. Just look at that. Sweet Jesus!” Then Ben began to mutter things in complete amazement. Suddenly Ben’s phone rang, a loud rhythmic pattern that pierced everyone’s ears, including the creature in front of them. The large reptile, rose its head from the river, and stared at the boat ahead of it.

The awe quickly turned into fear. Enrique turned the boat on, and a tried to do a U turn, but the river was too narrow for that at least from the point they were at. “Hang on,” Enrique said nervously. Ben put the camera down. The creature started a slow walk towards them and grunted a few times.

Enrique forced the boat to turn the other way and excelerated as fast as it could. Suddenly the immense lizard gave chase to the runaway boat. “HURRY UP! GET US THE HELL OUT OF HERE!” Ben yelled glancing back at the approaching monster.

Eric was nervous and his once excited persona was no more. Fear had now taken over his body. The creature roared and splashed water with each step the thing took. It came closer and closer snapping at the speeding boat. Then with a bunt of a head, the creature knocked the boat over, causing it to flip onto the other side. Now Ben, Eric, and Enrique were underwater trying to swim as far away as possible from the boat. A loud roar could be heard, slightly unclear, even when they were under the water with the boat on top of them.

Eric could see the snout of the creature diving into the river looking for them. Ben and Eric swam to the shore, while the lizard tore the boat to pieces. The beast paid no attention to them, but rather on the boat. Both of them ran into the thickness of the jungle, keeping out of the creatures sight. Ben and Eric breathed heavily, with water dripping from their bodies.

When Eric found his breath he asked, “Where is Enrique?”

And not to long after, the response came. A loud scream coming from the river. And then a roar by the titanic tyrant. They were all alone on an island filled with prehistoric dinosaurs, and the feeling had yet to set in.

Chapter One: Dinner with a Friend

Alan Grant pulled into the driveway of a Victorian style home, that just so happened to belong to Ellie Sattler...Degler. Grant disliked the last name. Ellie Degler? No, that didn’t have a nice ring to it. Ellie Grant? That’s more like it, Grant thought as he shut the door to his rent-a-car Honda Accord. He had been invited to the Degler home for dinner, by no other than Ellie herself. They hadn’t seen each other since the day they broke up; one of the days he’d like to forget or start over. While Grant was at a restaurant, by himself, Ellie and Mark just so happened to be there as well. The sight of the married couple irritated him, but made him happy none the less. It made him happy, just to see Ellie happy. He still had feelings for Ellie, but he was determined not to show it tonight.

After the 1993 incident on Isla Nublar, things changed. Both of their views on life itself were altered. Ellie had wanted to write a book about the events that took place that dreadful day, and Grant had just wanted to forget about it. Ellie had wanted kids, but Grant, even though going through the toughest times of his life with kids, still hadn’t changed his mind about having them. After two years of being together, they had called it quits. Ellie had told him that she wanted a family, a beautiful house, and a white picket fence; the whole nine yards. Alan couldn’t change his lifestyle for a fictional one, the kind that only existed in movies and fairy tales. But as Grant walked up to the door, he had looked at the past events with regret. Maybe he could of done those things. Maybe...

Ellie opened the door before Alan could knock. “Alan!” she said greeting him with a hug.

Grant returned the greeting with a childish school boy smirk, “How are you? It’s a wonderful place you got here.”

Ellie pulled herself away from Grant and shut the door. “Thank you. Um, Mark will be back in a half hour. You want something to drink? Coke, Sprite, water?”

“I’ll take a water,” Grant replied gazing at the cathedral ceilings that towered above him.
Alan followed Ellie into the kitchen, as if he thought he’d get lost if he hadn’t.

“You look great,” Ellie replied handing him a glass of water.

“Thank you. You...you look fantastic,” Grant said as though he were talking to a completely different person. Both of them gazed into each other’s eyes, studying their facial features. Then a noise broke their silence. It was a child, probably around the age of five or six.

“Oh, Alan this is Charlie,” she said pushing the child forward.

Charlie stared at Alan and became very nervous, running behind Ellie’s legs. Ellie and Alan laughed in unison, at the cute child. Must of gotten his looks from his mommy, Alan thought.

“Charlie say hello,” Ellie said picking him up.

“Hi,” the five year old said waving at Grant.

“Nice to meet you Charlie,” Grant replied waving back. Charlie smiled and wasn’t quite as nervous anymore. This could of all been mine, Alan thought. Kids, a nice Victorian style home, and most of all Ellie...it all could of been his if he had just been willing to change.

“You want to play checko’s?” Charlie asked Grant, mispronouncing the word ‘checkers’.

Ellie smiled, “He can’t honey, he’s only...”

“I’d love to,” Alan said interrupting Ellie. Ellie cocked an eyebrow in complete shock. Charlie released himself from Ellie’s arms and took Grant by the hand and lead him to the living room. Grant turned his head as Charlie grabbed onto his arm, and smiled at Ellie. “Still got it,” Alan said with a smirk. Ellie smiled.

After fifteen minutes of playing checkers with Charlie, Ellie told him to go wash up for dinner. Charlie ran from Alan and hopped up the stairs to the bathroom. “Great kid,” Alan replied putting away the checker pieces.

“He is, especially when you let him win all five games.”

“I didn’t let him win, he’s just an exceptionally good checker player,” he said smiling.

Ellie looked at him, as if she saw a new person. “You really have changed haven’t you Alan?”

“Is it so hard to believe that I can evolve every now and then?”

“Not at all. You were always capable of evolving, you just never stopped evolving,” Ellie said leaning back on the couch. There was a brief moment of silence between the two, until Ellie finally changed the subject. “So what are you working on nowadays?”

Alan put down his glass of water, “Raptors mostly.”

Ellie’s face switched expressions from interest into fear. Just the mention of the name sent chills down her spine. “Raptors? Well, anything new turn up?”

“I have a theory about their social intelligence, all of which would explain their behavior back on...”

Before Alan could finish Ellie interrupted, “Jurassic Park.”

“Yes, Alan said, back on the island. Their ability to work as a team, lies in their ability to talk to each other. Given a chance, I’m certain I can prove my theory that the raptor might have been capable of birdlike vocalizations.”

“They were smart,” Ellie said in a somewhat soft voice, recalling the events that took place that fateful day in 1993.

“To a degree we never imagined. Ellie, they were smarter than dolphins, smarter than whales. Ellie they were smarter than primates!”

Just as they were getting deep into their conversation, Mark Degler arrived. Mark worked for the State Department and was a handsome man with an expensive suit that was probably worth more than Alan earned in a month.

“Hey Alan,” Mark said extending a handshake.

    “Hello Mark,” Grant replied.

Charlie came hopping down the stairs and jumped into Mark’s arms. “Daddy, daddy!” he yelled. Mark swung him around in his arms kissing the boy on his cheek.

“Hey buddy!” Mark said lifting the child up and down.

If Grant ever felt out of place, this was definitely the time.

After a hearty dinner and a limited conversation between the three of them, Ellie walked Alan back to his car. “It was a really wonderful dinner Ellie. You’ve made a beautiful life for yourself here. Nice kids, an okay husband...”

“Hey, hey, hey don’t start Alan,” Ellie said leaning on the car.

“I’m only joking with you Ellie,” Grant said smiling.

“Stick to paleontology, and leave the comic relief for the comedians,” Ellie said returning the smile.

“I just might have to make that occupational switch,” Alan said jumping into his car.

“How do you mean?” Ellie asked shutting the door for him.

“Raising money was never easy. Before Jurassic Park became worldwide news, it was a bit easier. But now, fossils don’t mean a damn thing, and all people want to do is see them up close. You heard it from me first; that park would and did get us out of a job.”

“Alan, those aren’t real dinosaurs. The real dinosaurs existed millions of years ago, you of all people should know that. What was on that island was nothing more than a theme park monster.”

“That’s what I keep telling myself,” Alan said smiling.

Ellie and Alan exchanged looks. “Alan if you need anything, don’t hesitate to call. I mean it.”

    Alan simply nodded.

“Your still the best Alan. I mean that,” Ellie said leaning downward towards the cracked window.

“The last of my breed,” Alan replied exiting the driveway. Ellie just stood there watching the car disappear from her sight. Watching the man she once loved, disappear from her sight.
