    [CHAPTER ONE] A PERFECT EVENING

Molly Summner pushed the door open to her one story home, quickly shutting it upon entry. Greeting her was a darkened living room, with various pieces of furniture silhouetted by a dim glow coming from beneath the kitchen door. An alluring aroma drifted through the house, calling her into the single room she had rarely ever used or spent time in. The kitchen.

Making her way towards the kitchen, Molly gently set her keys onto the living room table. A seductive smile formed at the edge of her lips, as she knew what lie on the other side of the kitchen door. Pushing the door open, ever so slightly, she glanced inside, making her presence secretive.

Hovered above a stove was thirty five year old Nathan Quinn, Molly’s future husband; Molly’s future. At six-two, Nathan was well built and handsome. Sporting thick brown hair, with a thinly formed goatee, Nathan could have easily been a model had he not fallen into law enforcement. As a detective of the Seattle Washington Police Department, Nathan was rarely ever around, especially when it came time for dinner. Seeing him in the kitchen was a pleasant surprise.

“I thought I smelled a fire burning,” Molly said, wrapping her arms around Nathan’s waist.

“Are you insulting my cooking talents?” Nathan asked, wiping his hands off on a small cloth.

“Well your no Emeril Lagasse, but you’ll do,” she replied, the two locking lips rhythmically, with smiles planted on both their faces. The couple unhooked themselves from each others grasp, parting their separate ways.

“You’re home early,” Molly said, gazing at the various dishes scattered on the kitchen table.

“Yeah, well apparently John grew a heart over the holiday season,” Nathan stated, referring to the precincts Lieutenant, John Hathaway.

“I find that beyond kind, considering the case you were working on. Speaking of which... any new developments?”

Nathan removed his apron, hanging it on a nail located inches away from the refrigerator. “None... the sons of bitches are still out there, but we got guys working round the clock,” he said, placing a pot of steaming pasta onto the counter.

“So I’ve noticed. Those poor girls. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain their fam–”

“Honey, lets not talk about work, huh? I took time off to get away from all that,” Nathan said, obviously uncomfortable with the subject, if not eerily disturbed.

As an awkward silence erupted between the two, music could be heard from what seemed to be quite a distance from where they were. Molly set her napkin aside and listened attentively.

“Come here,” Nathan said, rising from his seat. Molly was a bit confused, but did as she was told. Grasping her hand, Nathan began to lead her outside.

“Nathan, where are we going?” she asked, as she was being dragged away from the dinner table.

“Just follow the music,” he said with a smile.

Finally the two had reached a sliding glass door, which lead to a backyard. Sliding the door open, Molly set foot outside, where the music became fully audible. The scene she found herself in, was beautiful. A line of lights streamed from the towering trees, illuminating the darkened environment, with light classical jazz playing soundly in the background. Placed in the formation of a circle, were torches, burning bright in the night sky.

“My God... when did you do this?” Molly said, her breath taken away.

“Early this afternoon... thought it’d be a nice change in scenery,” he said, gloating with pride.

Inspecting the terrain, Molly turned to face Nathan. “It’s beautiful.”

Nathan slowly approached his wife-to-be, taking her hand into his. A smile formed before he even said a word.

“May I have this dance?” he asked.

    “Most certainly,” Molly replied.

The two entered the ring of lit torches and gently embraced each other. As she gazed over his shoulder, Molly took into view a beaming, radiant moon, looming majestically over the earth she danced on.

“Do you remember the first time you asked me to dance?” Molly asked, the two of them moving in unison.

“How could I forget?” Nathan asked, adjusting his voice for an impersonation of his younger self. “Um, Muh-muh-muh-Molly, would you like to-to-to dance?” he said, his voice crackling like a teenager who had not yet reached puberty.

“Uh huh, and I said ‘I’d be honored’,” Molly said, snickering as she recalled the moment.

“And I warned you of my dancing abilities. ‘I must warn you though, I’ve been known to put women in wheelchairs for this’.”

“You were so cute,” she said, laughing under the moonlight.

“Well, I’d like to think that I still am.”

“Oh, you are,” she said, as they kissed passionately. “Very arrogant,” Molly finished, giggling.

“Ouch, that hurt,” Nathan said, when the moment was suddenly interrupted by his beeper. “God damnit,” he whispered beneath his breath. Detaching the device from his belt, Nathan recognized the number. It was Lieutenant Hathaway.

Molly smiled, “It’s okay. I understand... you’ve proven yourself worthy, so you don’t have to worry about me not marrying you.”

Nathan smiled, “Thank God for that.” Tracing the outline of her face with his index finger, Nathan began to take in the beauty radiated from her presence. With sparkling emerald eyes, a strand of blonde hair lazily tucked behind her left ear, and a smile that always brought a smile to his own face, Molly was beyond beautiful.

“I love you,” Nathan said, resting his head on hers.

“I love you too,” she whispered.

Hesitantly, Nathan pushed himself away from his fiance and began walking backwards, his eyes focused on her. “I’ll be right back!”

“And I’ll be right here,” Molly replied, waving Nathan away. With a parting glance, Nathan took off, leaving Molly to herself. Hearing the car pull out of the driveway, Molly glanced up at the star lit sky, folding her arms into her chest. So much for the perfect evening.
