    PROLOGUE: MURDER ON MAYBERRY LANE

Flashing lights illuminated the night sky, with all the neighborhood watching the investigation that was taking place at 1159 Mayberry Lane. It was evident that nothing, especially a murder of this magnitude, had ever occurred in this part of Maine. Standing in their pajamas, gazing at the two story Victorian style home, they watched a horror being unveiled before their eyes. The house was covered in caution tape and flooded with FBI agents coming from and to the house. The scene was beyond anything Mayberry County had ever seen.

Jack Thomas, an FBI agent of seven years, exited a Ford Taurus with very little haste. With his black trench coat sweeping the ground he walked on, a man approached him. This man’s name was Jacob Shepherd. In his early thirties, Jacob stood six foot one and had short brown hair, with piercing green eyes. Before he said anything Jack sighed, “What do we have?”

“Well it’s not pretty as I’m sure you’ve figured out already. We have a triple homicide. Two adults and one child, all brutally murdered,” Jacob said ducking under yellow caution tape.

Jacob continued to talk, but once Jack entered the house, he could hear nothing but the beat of his heart. He studied his surroundings with great attention to detail and glanced at the family portraits hanging from the off-white walls. Jerry Winters, the husband and father, reminded Jack of Gregory Peck’s timeless character Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. He looked like a serious man, but a family man nonetheless. Lisa Winters, the wife and mother, was beautiful to say the least. She reminded him of his own fiancee, Dana, which made the situation all the more eerie and uncomfortable. And Laura Winters, the daughter of the ideal couple. She looked like her mom, with eyes big and bright, and her blonde hair of shoulder length, gleaming with the flash of the cameras light. She looked like a smart girl, who could of been capable of many extrodinary things. But someone made sure she would never get to show that radiance she once held... that someone was a monster. Jack had come to the simple conclusion that what they were dealing with was a man without a soul or compassion. A man who’s heart had been hardened once too many to give a damn about the heart of a child.

As Jack climbed up the steps, with Jacob leading, the strong odor of blood filled the compacted hallway. The smell was like that of hundreds of copper pennies rusting away in a near by well. The murders had been committed in the bedroom... but what about the girl? Her bedroom was still in tact. Where had she been murdered?

Stepping into the bedroom, Jack saw Lisa Winters crumpled up in one corner of the room and Jerry Winters lying on the king sized bed, on top of a blood drenched blanket. The room was almost completely white, making the blood stand out like a soar thumb.

“No finger prints?” Jack asked crouching down to the dead corpse of Mrs. Winters. She had been beaten savagely with a phone, cracking her skull. Whoever did this, was in a state of rage. A man who kills another with his bare hands can be classified as mentally disturbed. The once beautiful face she had in the family photo, had been altered to the point of unidentification. Her face had caved in and blood oozed out of the small crevices punctured into her face.

“None. We’ve had our guys dust for over an hour and we have nothing, which is strange because these murders were all done by with the guys bare hands.”

“Who called this in?” he asked putting on a pair of plastic gloves.

“The brother of Jerry Winters came here to pick up Laura this afternoon, so he could take her and her cousin on a camping trip. When there was no answer at the door, he used his key and stumbled onto this masterpiece,” Jacob said gnawing on a tooth pick.

    “The girl? Where is she?”

Jacob shook his head, “She’s downstairs in the kitchen... it’s bad Jack. She’s fucked up bad.”

Jack rose from his crouched position and headed downstairs, stepping over Jerry Winters’ dead body. With quick, rhythmic steps, Jack walked off the stair case and headed for the kitchen. Slightly pushing fellow agents aside, he saw a grotesque sight he wish he never had. Laura’s head was stuck in between the oven door and the oven itself. The monster had smashed her head continuously with the oven door, once again altering the face of a beautiful human being.

“Jesus Christ,” Jack said with his hand over his mouth. He’d never seen such a violent murder on such a young girl. Who would take the life of such an innocent little girl? “Have you checked under the victims nails for dead tissue?”

“Yeah, nothing. None of them dug their nails into this guy. Whoever this guy is, he’s strong.”

“There’s one conclusion we can jump to. I think this man is strong, but most likely unnoticebly so. This guy commited these murders out of pure hatred... or a passion so filled with rage he actually killed three people with his bare hands. The man is a pycho path to say the least.”

“You think we have a serial killer on our hands?”

“I have a bad feeling that we might,” Jack said removing the plastic gloves.
